van heckler August 6th, 2006, 04:33 PM Like many before me, I have forgotten to put in a poll
How embarrassing
Bachy Soletanche August 7th, 2006, 11:42 AM I use to go past this on the train and always wondered if this was taller or shorter than than "Big Ben" in London, now thanks to wonders of the Information SuperInternet, I now know.
This information inproved the standard of my life, a little bit.
Ohh, I shall give this 8, no, 9 out of 10, extra point for fitting in so well with the other great buildings of the (orginal) University Campus.
Erebus555 August 7th, 2006, 03:43 PM Brilliant building. 9/10. But some dimwit forgot to put a poll :D
van heckler August 7th, 2006, 04:05 PM Brilliant building. 9/10. But some dimwit forgot to put a poll :D
Guilty as charged :nocrook:
Erebus555 August 7th, 2006, 04:18 PM It may also be worth noting that this is taller than St. Stephen's Tower (the tower you lot may know as Big Ben).
van heckler August 7th, 2006, 04:44 PM ^^ 4 meters taller I believe.

Any way, It wasn't untill I had a butchers on Google Earth that I realised it stood all on its
own and wasn't actually connected to the university.
Erebus555 August 7th, 2006, 05:12 PM ^^ 4 meters taller I believe.
3.7 metres actually :D
van heckler August 7th, 2006, 05:19 PM Not according to emporis my friend.
oscar9 August 7th, 2006, 05:58 PM Looks like the India mill tower in Darwen Lancashire but with clock faces on,its about the same height too.Nice 7/10 http://www.cottontown.org/page.cfm?pageid=373&language=eng
Munch August 7th, 2006, 06:24 PM Taller than St Stephens Clock tower?? Absolutely (by a few metres) BUT... also... this tower is listed as the TALLEST CLOCK TOWER IN THE WORLD... that is, the tallest tower built specifically to host a clock.. accoring to that book of records we all know about...
Erebus555 August 7th, 2006, 07:28 PM Not according to emporis my friend.
Wikipedia thinks not my friend.
van heckler August 7th, 2006, 07:58 PM Well, I've just this minute got back from London and whilst I was there, I measured the height of the Clock Tower and I can officialy say that it is exactly 96 meters tall making it 4 meters shorter then old Joe.
So screw you Erebus555 :baeh3:
Scarecrow August 7th, 2006, 08:35 PM It's great. I love the height. However, I reckon the clock faces are too high/small to be read properly by those poor of sight. I reckon it's just about my only gripe... :)
9/10
Erebus555 August 7th, 2006, 10:07 PM What clockfaces? I dont see any clock faces? :D
Bachy Soletanche August 7th, 2006, 10:35 PM I'm just trying to think there wouldn't have been any building taller in Birmingam till the Post Office tower, HCT, and Alpha Tower, and that's only the same height anyway.
Was there anything taller other than Blackpool, and maybe New Brighton towers in 1900? And the big tower on the HoP?
And Sailsbury cathedrial, and a load more...
van heckler August 7th, 2006, 11:18 PM I can think of 5 taller
New Brighton Tower - 170
Blackpool Tower - 150
Salisbury Cathedral - 123
Saint Pauls Cathedral - 111
Victoria Tower - 102
Chamberlain Clock Tower - 100
Bachy Soletanche August 7th, 2006, 11:32 PM Not that many really, of course it just is a big Chimney with a clock stuck on the top, but it is nice just to look straight up at and get that reverse vertigo/dizzy feeling.
van heckler August 7th, 2006, 11:43 PM Is there any photos taken from the top flying about any where?

Biosonic August 17th, 2006, 06:51 PM I thought St Stephen's Tower was the other tower at the Palace of Westminster :? That IS taller than the one that holds Big Ben...
But ours is the tallest clock tower IN THE WORLD (I hope) ;)

FLD August 24th, 2006, 12:26 PM A beautiful structure.
van heckler January 11th, 2009, 05:45 PM This is now listed as 110m rather than 100m.

If it is, then it won't be for much longer.
You seen the disgusting Makkah Clock Royal Tower that's under construction in Mecca? What were they thinking

gothicform February 4th, 2009, 06:08 AM that's not a free-standing clock tower though. it's a skyscraper with a clock on the top.
U475 Foxtrot February 4th, 2009, 04:18 PM Phew, for a minute I thought we had lost the title of the world's tallest clock tower ;)
Telfordboy February 5th, 2009, 02:21 PM How vile, didn't anyone ever tell them that size isn't everything?
Gherkin February 5th, 2009, 10:48 PM ^^ Have a look in the World Forums - they're planning to create a circular perimeter of skyscrapers around Mecca :ohno:
Telfordboy February 5th, 2009, 11:10 PM  Can you imagine if they tried to do that with sites of such historical significance in this country? There would be outrage.

GeorgeGriffiths December 13th, 2009, 08:01 PM Great, a master in Victorian architecture. Must be the tallest building built during the Victorian period in Britain? 10/10.
OperateOnMe December 14th, 2009, 12:16 AM The clock tower has underground passages! It is gorgeous, I heard there were plans to finnish off construction of that whole complex, as there is a building missing on the outskirts of that green.
In regards to Mecca (pics above), it is a total tragedy that they have built that monstrosity! That's what happens when you have too much money and not enough sense, what was the King thinking, it will be the world largest hotel/building?
Interestingly, one of them clock faces is suppose to be the same as 5 Big Ben next to each other, 40m, thats almost half the size of this tower and the clock is 8x bigger than ours

It's actually the 4th tallest surprisingly, after New Brighton Tower (now destroyed), Blackpool Tower and the Houses of Parliament.
wiggleyleeds December 14th, 2009, 12:35 PM Great, a master in Victorian architecture. .
it looks like a mosque to me though :dunno:
smashing building though, I remember going for an interview to brum uni and thinking gorr blimey thats tall !
10/10 - there is really nothing to critisize about it.
Erebus555 December 15th, 2009, 12:21 AM It's actually the 4th tallest surprisingly, after New Brighton Tower (now destroyed), Blackpool Tower and the Houses of Parliament.
Technically, it wasn't built in the Victorian period - it started construction in 1900 and Queen Viccy popped her cotton socks in 1901. The tower was completed in 1908. :)
gothicform December 15th, 2009, 12:50 AM it looks like a mosque to me though
it's called a campanile and is actually venetian. i was just about to link to the wikipedia article to show what one of these is... and lo-and-behold this precise structure is the tallest campanile in the world according to it
