Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 08:34 PM Hello guys, hope you don't mind me starting up my own little thread, but I had a little holiday in your fine city, and I tooks a couple of Pictures, some good, some bad and some ugly, I thought I'd share them with ya!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0434.jpg
Just a back street where I parked my car, now if I didn't know I would have said that was in Birmingham.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0435.jpg
New Devoplment, I liked the Spoon motif in the metalwork!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0436.jpg
Couldn't quite fit all that one in, next time I'll get a camera that can pan out...
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0437.jpg
That's a shocking piece of parking isn't it?
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0438.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0439.jpg
Well at least the chairs are nice!

To be honest a lot of this edge of the shopping bit reminds me of Pre-New Bull Ring Birmingham
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 08:41 PM I really like this one, I though it was a Modern Church when I first saw it up the street,

paulmat August 6th, 2006, 08:51 PM Lol. You managed to get a lot of the bad bits didn't you. The part that you compared to the pre-bullring area is all gonna get redeveloped so well have a decent shopping area, like the bullring.
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 09:03 PM Well, it's good someones talking the pictures for the future then!
Arf!
More to follow, just as soon as my stupid dial-up modem gets the Pictures to Photobucket!
And, Don't think it's anything anti Sheffield, I've posted up some right shockers of Manchester and Birmingham, I should be visting another Yorkshire Town soon, and I'll be putting up my own personal taste of pictures, maybe some people like Brutalism eh?
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 09:04 PM Mean moody, and magificiant
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0463.jpg
paulmat August 6th, 2006, 09:08 PM Lol. I wasn't particularly complaining about you getting the bad bits. It's good in a way, cause so many people just post pictures of the good bits. And there's some brutalism that I like. I love the Park Hill flats, and I think they'll look brilliant once theyve been spruced up.
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 09:10 PM I like this one, New build I assume?

Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 09:12 PM Can't read the plaque, but think this may have been a Methodist Hall, there seems something slight wrong about that becoming a pub, ah, what the heck!

Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 09:16 PM This is a great square, I love the wall memorial and the fountains are smashing in their Square way!

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0469.jpg
Hmm 70s! 1870s! (can you see what I did there? no idea when they were build, but why let the truth get in the way of a good (!) joke?
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0470.jpg

I just about remember the old town Hall extention, it's improved a bit since then hasn't it?
And those Fountains/water features are really well done, saw a lot of people in the square having a nice time later on.
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 09:35 PM Only building I've ever seen with the word Millenium in the title thats not at total Disaster

Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 10:08 PM One last one for now, and it's dedicated to Paulmat
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0497.jpg
paulmat August 6th, 2006, 10:38 PM Lol. In all there splendor.
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 10:38 PM Suppose I might as well get this Grim Fargo over I suppose, There's a building in Liverpool that look just like this one, full of Goth/weirdo shops, apparently not been there in a while
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0484.jpg
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 10:41 PM I liked the strong vertical lines on this one,
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0485.jpg
sorry about the funny angle, I was trying to avoid a couple of Chavettes
paulmat August 6th, 2006, 10:43 PM Yeah, some of the buildings down there are nice, could just do with a bit of a clean.

Bladerunner August 6th, 2006, 10:48 PM Thanks for sharing. What were your overall impressions? And did you come across the new high rises V1 / Metier on your travels?
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 10:48 PM A new building that's built next to the river, and makes no attempt to use the river location, d'oh!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0494.jpg
Hopefully the new one will
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 10:49 PM Sheffield the only city where we have Kettle images on our buildings

paulmat August 6th, 2006, 10:56 PM So...
Like bladerunner said, what did you think to our wonderful city?
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 11:04 PM Thanks for sharing. What were your overall impressions? And did you come across the new high rises V1 / Metier on your travels?
Well I will say I did notice a lack of tall buildings, I noticed that when I got lost on my way back and didn't have something like Beechams Manchester to guide myself with.
It does remind me of Birmingham more than anywhere else, they've done a good job tieding up the Town Hall area, but there's a lot of tired 60s stuff, espically around the outskirts of the town, and it also seemed quite quiet, I know it was a sunday morning, but Manchester and Birmingham were busier the last time I went on Sundays morning. Maybe if they opened the Art Gallery it would help..
But there's some really nice buildings, and the central shopping street is lovery, reminded me of Dundee for some odd reason. Hopefully the good stuff can expland outwards.
I should be going to Leeds next week, I didn't get asked for money once when I was in Sheffield. Dunno why I mention those 2 facts together...
Although I did see a middle aged man pick up a cigarette butt off the pavement, not seen that in years, and I work in Liverpool too.
And on that bombshell.
Bachy Soletanche August 6th, 2006, 11:09 PM Well, if you're twisting my arm,
s'alright!
I think I prefer Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham, to be honest, but that could just be my liking for big Cities, there's certainly a lot worst places in the world.
Worksop for example.
Was going to say something else, what the bloody hell was that steep road that suddely had rail tracks running down it on my way towards Hillsbough Manchester way? Bloody scary that was!
Bladerunner August 7th, 2006, 10:53 AM http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0500.jpg
The cranes on the horizon are working on V2 and V3 beside Sheffield's other 'cluster' of 50m buildings - the Pennine Centre, V1 and Metier. Unfortunately, you can't see any them, as they are sitting at the bottom of the hill.
thelynxeffect August 9th, 2006, 12:25 AM I didn't get asked for money once when I was in Sheffield.
think yourself lucky. I get asked all the time. Seriously i know the speel...
hi i know you hear this all the time but im gonna say it anyway, Im John the Bebopping Happiest bodypopper in sheffield... or some shit.
seriously get lost!!!!
I walked through the town from the station the other day to Fargate. I got asked for money 4 times. Thats just wrong.
paulmat August 9th, 2006, 09:38 AM Yeah, I get asked quite a lot too. I even had one guy who said that God was gonna curse me or sommat if I didn't give him money.
muddycoffee August 9th, 2006, 11:42 AM I think that the Victoria hall is spoiled with that canopy.
I have local history books which feature the building and without the canopy the front has interesting lines. It is not as if people are left waiting in the rain nowadays.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a366/robinsonworld/HPIM0484.jpg
The begginnings of that building are very interesing, as it was built after hundreds of local people fundraised for it. And there is a picture of crowds of people in old fashioned dress back in the early 20th century, walking around the foundations inspecting the work. Bowler hats walking sticks the lot, it looks rather like a victorian farce, or an old Laurel and Hardy movie.
I think some of the earliest performances included a bloke playing religious gramaphone records, and 1000 people turned up to that!
Knocks big brother into a cocked hat that kind of entertainment... Just think they only had about 70 years to wait before the arrival of punk. :scouserd:
S.Yorks Capital August 9th, 2006, 11:55 AM Yeah they should knock down that ugly 70's style extenstion. It totally lets down a magnicent building.
soupçon August 17th, 2006, 08:54 PM Nice one Stephen. Addictive thread - I've spent ages for my dial-up to download all those images of places that I already know, but it's really interesting. Have spotted a couple of things I've not seen before. Love the kettle on the post office building - I think it's great when you can 'find' things in a city you've lived in for 12 years.

An application has been put in for a new canopy :-P

Well considering they never take them down they should be back unless someone forget to plug em in.
I wish they would do decorations like they did in the 80's with loads of xmas trees on Fargate with lattern style lights on the xmas trees and normal trees on the Moor Fitzalan Square etc,and the little Snow men, santa, angels, hollies etc on the lamp posts with tinsel around them.
And have proper over head xmas decks, always remember them blowing around in gale force winds as a kid wondering how they stayed up.
Todays are just a lttle bit boring and colourless to an extent.
But at least this is a start-http://sccplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/press/news/release.asp?akey=3945
Bladerunner October 27th, 2006, 10:36 AM "David Thornton of Sheffield-based, Tinderbox Events & Installations said: “37 years ago my sister and I were taken on a magical adventure through an enchanted forest where we met Father Christmas in a snow covered workshop somewhere close to the North Pole. It was a memorable, magical adventure that we all shared together. Years later I discovered that we never made it to the North Pole, it was simply a disused piece of land close to The Moor - but by then it didn’t matter. That’s why I’m delighted to be bringing a Christmas Grotto back to Sheffield City Centre this year. Because creating that sense of wonder about the world in which we live, both imaginary and real, is the greatest gift of all.”
I'm old enough to remember Santa's Forest at the bottom of the Moor. It really was a magical place for a kid. Anyone else remember it?
soupçon October 27th, 2006, 01:39 PM I remember going to a strange forest where I had to sit on an old man's lap. Nothing to do with the Moor though...
lewisskinner October 27th, 2006, 09:11 PM That sounds amazing! Oh to be a kid again...
Bladerunner October 27th, 2006, 11:01 PM Now that Sheaf and Dyson are gone, and Redvers is changed beyond recognition, I'm quite attached to this municipal -style mid rise, part of Sheffield Uni I think.
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j217/hellagood88/DSCF0010.jpg
The tower at the bottom of West St, looking down onto West Bar, is also one of my faourites. Forget the name of it though.
paulmat October 27th, 2006, 11:07 PM ^^ St. James Tower? The one with the Blue neon Lights on?
paulmat October 27th, 2006, 11:07 PM http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j217/hellagood88/DSCF0010.jpg
And I HATE that building :-P
Bladerunner October 27th, 2006, 11:54 PM St James Tower is in your diagram Kyle but I can't find a pic anywhere. It's a nice, innocuous little tower, now with arguably the best business position in the city and some great views in all directions. I couldn't see something like that being approved today (although you never know).
http://img488.imageshack.us/img488/6067/sheffdiagram32es.png
Bladerunner October 28th, 2006, 12:04 AM Actually the "Crap Uni Building" - for want of a better name - must be over 30 metres, and it's in the centre - surely you need to add it to for your diagram Kyle? :-)
paulmat October 28th, 2006, 12:08 AM There's some pictures here:
http://www.emporis.com/en/il/pc/?id=150707&aid=8
I think it's a great building. Just cause it's so simple.
paulmat October 28th, 2006, 12:09 AM I think the uni building is part of the Mappin Building?
Bladerunner October 28th, 2006, 12:17 AM The first two pics here are great. Love the old city centre terraced housing.
http://www.emporis.com/en/il/pc/?id=150707&aid=8
lewisskinner October 28th, 2006, 06:05 AM ^^^^Yes!! I love this building! For ages I could see it from my house but never knew where i was. Found it on a walk towards the Dove and Rainbow a couple of months ago...
Bladerunner October 28th, 2006, 12:35 PM Just realised that St James House also features in the previous batch of pics.

Bladerunner October 28th, 2006, 04:40 PM Cheers. This view makes it look a couple of stories higher.

Bladerunner October 29th, 2006, 10:23 PM St James House would be even nicer if it were 24 stories instead of 12...
soupçon October 29th, 2006, 10:28 PM Love the shot of Howard St. Paulmat - the trees are looking good and really frame the Cholera Monument.
paulmat October 29th, 2006, 11:08 PM Lol. The cholera monument's the only reason I took that pic :-P. To prove to my gran where it is.
paulmat October 29th, 2006, 11:09 PM St James House would be even nicer if it were 24 stories instead of 12...
It would. I love it cause it's such a simple design, and they've even managed to make the base good. (Unlike the BT tower).
Alfie October 29th, 2006, 11:29 PM Ive never liked the Stoddard Building on Arundel Gate but in that photo above it actually looks alright.
must be a trick of the light.
:)

What's in the base units?

Alfie October 30th, 2006, 04:59 PM lol I noticed. I think the conversation skips one; it's the St James fan club !!!
soupçon October 30th, 2006, 06:11 PM St James seems like a pretty dull building to me, but what the hey.

They are really bigging us up too...

There's the Winter Gardens, The Hubs, the ICOMS building (u/c :-P), the Peace Gardens, the Sheaf Square etc.
soupçon October 31st, 2006, 01:16 PM What's that monument?
It's a monument to the 404 people who died in the Cholera outbreak in Sheffield in 1832. Over 300 are buried in Cholera Monument Grounds - the open space the monument sits in. The site is one of 5 places in Sheffield to have a Green Flag - the national standard for quality parks and open spaces.
For more info visit:
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/parks/a-z-city-and-district-parks/cholera-monument-grounds--clay-wood
The actual monument is gothic revival and was designed by M E Hadfield, whose pracitice Hadfield, Cawkwell & Davidson is still in Sheffield to this day.
muddycoffee October 31st, 2006, 02:37 PM Incidentally the cholera monument was struck by lightning in 1995 and I went straight over took some pics of it.
The Cholera Monument
This monument was hit by a lightening bolt in spring 1995, a stone was blown
out from the top and came to rest on the ground below.
I put a disgarded beer bottle on top of the stone, to give an idea how large
the stone actually was.
The Plaque

This monument was erected to the memory of
402 persons who died from asiatic cholera
during the epidemic of 1832, & were buried in
these grounds. The total number of persons
attacked by this disease was 1347 - and
amongst those who died was
The Master Cutler for the year Mr John Blake
The foundation stone was laid by
James Montgomery the poet. 11th Dec 1834
The monument was completed and the top
stone placed in position 11th April 1835

soupçon November 1st, 2006, 01:47 PM i imagine theyve repaired it by now though havent they? i dont remember seeing the chunk missing recently..
Actually Muddycoffee's photo only shows the bottom of three sections of the monument. The top two sections were blown over in a gale in 1990! Most of the stone was rescued and stored at various sites around the city. The monument was rebuilt 3 years ago thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
It now has a metal core running through it which acts as a lightning conductor and anchors it to the bedrock. Hopefully it won't be falling over again in the near future...

AndrewC November 2nd, 2006, 04:43 PM I used to frequent the cholera monument for pics of the city a fair bit in my first year when i lived at Norfolk park. Don't go there anymore but it does rule somewhat, a lovely quiet park near the city and suprisingly devoid of troublesome youths.
roneys_today November 2nd, 2006, 06:05 PM aah the egg box, what a thing of beauty you were!
it's surprising how quickly you forget how things used to look. all those complaints about the hotel and st pauls when they were going up were justified i suppose because people didn't want another mess but my god, it looks fantastic now compared to what it was.
paulmat November 2nd, 2006, 06:42 PM It's a lot more open now, but denser if you get what I mean.
lewisskinner November 2nd, 2006, 07:46 PM I think the problem was that people has got used to seeing the beautiful Winter Gardens, and then had the view cut off by St. Pauls Hotel. I understand that the hotel was always part of the deal, and I think it's actually not a bad buildig (save the cheaper cladding on the WG side), but could they not have revered the positions in the first place?
Bladerunner November 3rd, 2006, 12:04 AM I had forgotten that the new Peace Gardens were built before the Eggbox came down.

unners November 30th, 2006, 01:23 AM Out of interest is the 'Pin Ball park'next to the HUB's still lit up at night?.
roneys_today November 30th, 2006, 02:18 AM not to my knowledge. i really don't like what they did with that area, it looks so rushed and temporary. the steps seem to be made from massive kerb stones and i'm sure the gravel is only there to act like a litter tray for post-leadmill vomitters.
i bet it won't be long before we see it given over to a block of flats. it's a shame if it happens though, it would be nice to see another quality green space there.
Truefitt November 30th, 2006, 02:24 AM The bits on top of the union dont spin round anymore do they, because I thought they were designed to turn with the wind? And as for that area outside, it just seems like a waste bit of land to me, I went past it today and it just looks odd, and like roneys said it seems rushed, and a bit random, loads of plants, them old things from fargate and then metal bars.
I also notice the water feature down Howard street isnt working, I saw some builder type people looking at it the other day, but its still not working.
lewisskinner November 30th, 2006, 05:44 AM Howard water feature was at a trickle when I went down on Saturday.
What's this "Pin Ball Park"? Ain't it Spearmint Rhino's car park? I thought it was temporary - that they were just storing the old pots from Barker's Pool there until they got something better and/or re-used them elsewhere.
A green space here would be a lovely idea, but what purpose would it serve? I'd have to say, green is probably more likely than flats, given it's location. But then CIQ is seeing a lot of flats...
Bladerunner November 30th, 2006, 09:42 AM That's a great picture of the Students Union Skyfits. We can criticise it but few if any universities have a cooler uni building.

If you look at the Square carefully you see its designed like a pin ball machine.
soupçon December 1st, 2006, 06:06 PM The pinball design used to carry through into the bar of NCPM - don't know what it looks like in there nowadays though.
Truefitt December 1st, 2006, 08:10 PM I never went in when it was NCPM, but it still has a bright orange floor like outside, abart from that I dont see much that makes it like a pinball machine, well apart from the overall design.

paulmat May 25th, 2007, 04:16 PM Yeah, i've tried to post them before skyfits. It doesnt work. If anyone wants to see them, they're the heaeders on http://www.creativesheffield.com. Some good pics.
Kyle, is that top photo the Chinese Fireworks building?
AdamBlade May 25th, 2007, 04:47 PM i absolutely love your office skyfits, it's one of my favourite buildings but i don't know why, there's just something about it.

I remember for years there was one old wall on its own being propped up by some brace things. It used to really depress me.
Any photos Muddy?
Then as if by magic the wall had a whole building attached to it!
Bladerunner May 25th, 2007, 07:36 PM Love the pic of the mosque, Soupcon.
soupçon May 25th, 2007, 07:51 PM Thanks. It gets more and more phalic each time I look at it. LOL
It needs a bit of cropping really, but my software is limited to say the least.

its the learndirect buildings old facade, next to skyfits office :)
ive got millions of random photos of the city but i can never be bothered to upload them lol
paulmat May 26th, 2007, 12:19 PM Ah, nice. I never realised it was quite so decorative.
Looking at some of these photos makes me think, maybe we should have a go at editing some of the pictures so the buildings look run down like they may in the future. Could show which one's will last. (Although it could get quite depressing). Wen i've got more time, i'll have a go with a couple.
Truefitt May 26th, 2007, 09:07 PM Ah, nice. I never realised it was quite so decorative.

paulmat May 28th, 2007, 06:39 PM Excellent. Nice angle, don't often see the skyline from there. Is it up by Broad Street?
hella good May 28th, 2007, 07:01 PM it is indeed.
AndrewC May 29th, 2007, 02:32 PM Bit of a shame that the broad street development wil block one of the best views of the city.
hella good May 29th, 2007, 02:35 PM it is a shame, but at least there will be great views from the building :)
paulmat May 29th, 2007, 08:15 PM Hmm. I tried to make a future skyline from that pic, but surprisingly, you can't really see anything (Just the tops of Chesham House, and 1 Furnival Square) apart from City Lofts. I didn't think our fair city was that dense. Then again, I guess this isn't the best angle for the buildings getting built, as they're either down toward the Moor, or in the valley toward the Wicker.
paulmat May 29th, 2007, 10:28 PM Nice skyline pic from flickr:

Anyone fancy making a future skyline render? Should get VT, City Lofts, Hannover House, Furnival Square and possibly Chesham House on there. :)
hella good May 30th, 2007, 12:21 AM i may well have a go :)
paulmat May 30th, 2007, 10:13 AM Lol. Nice one ;)
hella good May 31st, 2007, 08:15 PM well its roughly like this: furnival square might be a bit to tall but its close enough. in comparison with redvers its accurate. ive only put velocity towers current approved height on there though.

OranjeS3 May 31st, 2007, 08:31 PM Kyle, could you put on the new hotel rough height and a possible tower (20 storeys ish?) next to the station square please? :)

The towers will make a hell of a difference to the skyline, much more big city feel at last!

OranjeS3 June 2nd, 2007, 11:04 AM here are the amendments with a possible highrise at dyson house
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j217/hellagood88/area3.png
Cheers for that, it really does give something to look forward to. I hope the site of the old dyson is used for something truely iconic!
paulmat June 2nd, 2007, 11:08 AM Only thing is, 1 Furnival square is in the wrong place. ;) But I wont complain, as it's better than what I could do.
Does look great though. I agree. Hope something iconic is proposed for the Dyson House site. I was trying to work out how much office space would be needed. The E-campus is 600,000 sqtf in total, there's two buildings of 50,000 for the first phase, I recon the 3 remaining buildings on the bus station site will be maybe 200,000-250,000. If the total office space is 600,000, they need to fit 250,000 on the Sheaf/Dyson house site. (Maybe 150,000 min.). That should equate to something tall. My only worry is that the site is quite big.
unners June 2nd, 2007, 11:09 AM I cant say i really bothered if we do not get a tall building next to the station, as i think the centre will look better with a cluster at the top of Howard st.
paulmat June 2nd, 2007, 11:17 AM I wish they'd knock down the Hallam Uni Science Park. It's lowrise and rubbish. We should have something, not tall, but maybe 5/6 stories, to increase the density. Also, it should compliment the (ex-)NCPM a bit better.
roneys_today June 2nd, 2007, 11:37 AM totally agree. once the new hotel is built the science park will be the real odd one out in that area and it needs bulldozing out the way fast.
OranjeS3 June 2nd, 2007, 11:38 AM I think we just need something iconic, that may be tall, but maybe not. Someone posted the building outside L**ds station as a good example.
Surely the council realise that the new station road is completely useless and will need to use some of the dyson site to increase this roads size.
Agree on the science park - depressing, uninspiring, village-esque! We need something impressive, lowish rise though to keep the view up to the st pauls area.
Unisol June 2nd, 2007, 12:37 PM lol ace, i can resize a version of it and make the background compatible with a desktop size if you want
Go on then!
(when you have a minute of course!)
jozblade June 2nd, 2007, 01:08 PM Yeah the Science Park is crap. Get something a bit lowrise in their of good quiality. Similar to the E-Campus.
lewisskinner June 3rd, 2007, 09:04 PM Went a'snappin' last weekend. Here's some of what I came up with:

incidentally, does anyone know what emerges at river-level under the undergrowth, below Harrison sign, (right) where the building look like it's falling to bits? Is it where the city centre's drains empty into the river?
paulmat June 3rd, 2007, 10:06 PM Nice pics there Lewis.
Fraid I don't know the answer to your question about the Don.
Anyone know what's going on with the offices/houses on campo lane? I doubt it's anything interesting. Probably just a new roof or sommat. And talking of campo lane, that bar on the end is terrible. They should knock it down. Really spoils a nice old area.
Rachael June 9th, 2007, 03:00 PM Ok, so the quality isn't great. Went for a walk round Skye Edge and didn't realise the view up there so didn't have a proper camera with me, just my phone, but you get the idea of the potential decent picture.

when you see trainers like that thrown over a telephone wire, apparently it means that the area already has a gang who sells all the drugs there.
It is a warning for other pushers to stay away or there will be trouble..
preventing turf wars..
muddycoffee June 9th, 2007, 03:57 PM Is it where the city centre's drains empty into the river?
It could be an emergency overflow, or where a brook joins the river.

Well either way, it's a rubbish building.
Nice pics BTW. Love the painting.
lewisskinner June 11th, 2007, 03:12 AM Lovely beers on! And to think, it almost closed just a few short months ago - thank god it was saved!
Mattski June 11th, 2007, 10:09 AM The Rutland's a great pub with great beer and really friendly clientele. As a straight guy on my own i've always felt comfortable in here, people are interested and interesting rather than lairy.
Anyway, that mural on the outside is lovely, I can't remember the name of the artist but I saw some of their other work at Archipelago last month (one was collecting one's Kid Acne Girl 2 original!) and it's all quite inventive. Some disturning detail though, like an obsession with staring eyes! It feels slightly Geigeresque to me.
M
lewisskinner June 11th, 2007, 10:59 AM is it the same guy who did the mural in one of the subways under the ring road? I don't remember which, but I remember going to a match with my dad when I was a kid and seeing one, so I'd guess Eccy Road or Bramall Lane...
Bladerunner June 11th, 2007, 10:36 PM Ok, so the quality isn't great. Went for a walk round Skye Edge and didn't realise the view up there so didn't have a proper camera with me, just my phone, but you get the idea of the potential decent picture.

Not bad at all or a phone pic. Although the Arts Tower and the Hallamshire seem to have faded into the haze...
Rachael June 12th, 2007, 12:24 AM I'm going to head up again with a proper camera and see if I can get a decent picture of the skyline that maybe Kyle could adapt to show what it would look like with city loft and velocity on if the quailty is good enough.
lewisskinner June 12th, 2007, 12:38 AM Is that Manor Oaks Road-way?

soupçon June 12th, 2007, 09:28 AM Is that Manor Oaks Road-way?
Looks like the pigeon lofts on Manor Laith Road. There's great views further into the playing fields - particularly above Park Hill.
paulmat June 12th, 2007, 02:39 PM That last pic, I quite like the 3rd building in it too. (The Jack Fulton one).
lewisskinner June 12th, 2007, 03:23 PM yea, the carving (or whatever it is) on the "tower" part of it is really nice!
Rachael June 12th, 2007, 03:51 PM Is that Manor Oaks Road-way?
Not quite. Its Manor Laith Road.
Manor Oakes is the otherside.

hella good June 19th, 2007, 12:21 AM it has a really great feel to it. plus its huge and has some interesting design features on it.
paulmat June 19th, 2007, 03:00 PM Yeah, the BT tower's great. They could do with doing something about the base though.

paulmat June 23rd, 2007, 03:32 PM Nice pic. Is this one of your aerial collection? (Was it you with the aerial ones?).
Would be great if this area was made into a China Town. It's got the architecture (The Chinese Fireworks building, and the Pagoda). Although I'm not sure, cause it's not particularly Chinese dominated, and not downtown or dense, so it could seem a bit tacky. Maybe if they invested a bit in the area and gave it some 'Chinese' touches it would be good. Could also help to regenerate the area.
PaulP June 23rd, 2007, 04:00 PM Aerial photos, yeah - that's me. Here's another one...

Truefitt June 23rd, 2007, 08:01 PM Nice areal shots, its always interesting to see things from above, just to see the real size and locations of buildings, and The forge (horrible design) takes up such a big area of land.
Do you own a plane or something? :P

AndrewC June 29th, 2007, 06:48 PM Just been for a walk around the endlciffe area, mainly to go past the new student village. Nothing spectacular:

They've been working on this for quite a while but it still looks quite bare - concrete cores and unfinished ground levels. These cranes - and the whole site - are quite big considering the suburban surroundings. The small red one in particular produces a sense of impending doom if cranes can do such a thing.
I did intend on turning around and going back home, but i thought since i was all the way up there I might as well follow it round and make a walk of it. This was my next target:

Is this the highest point above sea level a crane reaches in Sheffield?! Its these important questions that keep me going in life.

bersamim June 29th, 2007, 07:22 PM Is this the highest point above sea level a crane reaches in Sheffield?! Its these important questions that keep me going in life.
Two days ago I would have said yes but yesterday I was walking down Chesterfield Road and spotted a crane on the horizon in the south/south west of the city (possibly Ecclesall Road South area).
This one's definately higher than the Endcliffe student flats. Got a photo on my phone but it's too far away to make out.
It should probably go on the Crane Count thread too (outskirts count at least)? :)
AndrewC June 29th, 2007, 07:26 PM I know the one you mean actually cos I have a few friends down there. Might have to investigate tomorrow if we're blessed with some sunny spells.
paulmat June 29th, 2007, 07:39 PM Nice photo's Kyle and Andrew.
I really like the old Forté Posthouse. Think it could be great if it was tidied up and converted into apartments.
AndrewC June 29th, 2007, 07:53 PM The views from the flats higher than the surrounding houses must be brilliant.
