View Full Version : A bit of DC and Rochester from the sky (and a bit more of Rochester from the ground)

These are just some pics I took on my trip to Rochester in early July. We flew up and stopped in Washington, so I took some pics from the sky there ( techinically it's Arlington/Alexandria, but whatever, I got a pic of the Pentagon), also took some overhead pics of Rochester when we flew in the wrong way (for whatever reason; we passed the airport, flew all the way until we were over Lake Ontario, turned around, and approached Rochester from the North; made for some good photo-ops though. It's only 18 pictures. I could have, would have, and should have taken more; But I lost my camera the first day we were there and didn't get it back until today; after my uncle found it in his living room and mailed it to me.

First; I guess this is Alexandria VA's skyline;

Then, all of a sudden, I see the Pentagon. I have to admit it kind of concerned me that commercial planes are allowed to fly so close to it. But I wasn't gonna let that stop me from snappin' a picture!

Last of the DC area pics; The Potomic river flowing through the DC suburbs/exurbs.

Now, as we were flying into Rochester the wrong way. First; the Port of Rochester and Ontario Beach Park in the Charlotte neighborhood.

This was supposed to be a pic of some of the nice big houses off Lake Ave; but there were to many trees in the way. You can still see some of the houses though.

Seneca Park (I think.)
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/100_0154.jpg

Ah, and of course, a different kind of park; Kodak Park. Proud to be the biggest polouter in New York State!
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/100_0155.jpg

I have no idea what street this is. But I just wanted to get a couple shots of some residential area's. You can tell the plane is getting lower within these two pics taken right before we landed. I have no idea what I was looking at with the second pic. lol.. I'm pretty sure this is the Brooks Avenue/ 19th Ward area though.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/100_0157.jpg

Ok,now for a few street level shots. First; this is just my Grandma's house in suburban Greece; just outside the Rochester city limits.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/nixter369/100_0158.jpg

Now the rest of these are taken from South Avenue in the historic South Wedge and Highland neighborhoods. Thinking back these are sort of bitter-sweet. We were driving back from Highland hospital after seeing my Grandpa for what would be the last time. He passed away the next night on July 4.

...Rochester when we flew in the wrong way (for whatever reason; we passed the airport, flew all the way until we were over Lake Ontario, turned around, and approached Rochester from the North...
Which makes sense because the prevailing winds are from the southwest, and Rochester's primary runway (4/22) runs SW-NE. :) Similar to Buffalo's 5/23.

WAY over my head. lol. Thanks Jman, yeah, hard to believe it's been over a month already. I was actually disapointed that DT Roc apparently dissapeared as we were flying over it. We must have been just at the wrong angle or something but it's weird.

Great pix of DC and Rochester NY. I always was confuse about Arlington VA is it a city or just a suburb but it's very urban.

My family owns this building and we currently rent it, with 100% occupancy. The tree planted out front was planted the day I was born and has survived two ice storms and the famed labor day storm as well....oh hells ya!

Some nice pics by the way...your grandmas house has a lot of potential depending on what street its on.

Not that much. It's on Cabot Road right off the ridge. Starting to get a little gritty. Definitely gritty for suburbia. (the Twenty Twenty Market on the corner is rumored to be a front for a certain other type of business; I wouldn't be too surprised) I was hoping that they would keep it so I could live there while in college and maybe even after. It is a decent house built in the 30's and there is over 50 years of family history in it, but it's in need of some major work, might not be worth it. Also; UR has residency requirements for freshman and sophomores that says they have to live on campus. So I'm toying with the idea of applying for MCC's two plus two program. I really want to go to UR all 4 years; but I also want to be able to have my car (something underclassmen aren't allowed) and not HAVE to live on campus. Creepy that I took a pic of a house your family owns! How old is it? Did you ever live there?

Yea lived there for the first 4 years of my life, it's probably something over 80 years old, quite a few apartments there right now. We lived in the "attic" apartment when I was living there. It's pretty neat I guess, has a skylight and what not.

I always thought the Kadok Plant was a chemical plant.

Actually, I learned something from my buddy's dad who does the Hazmat at Kodak...all that "pollution" is actually recycled steam and is a pioneered system in control...infact Kodak might be one of NY States cleanest companies.

It looks like hell, but infact it really isn't doing too much harm.

Go to Niagara Falls and take the main drag that takes you into wheatfield...that part of the Falls is complete Industry...chem, Steel, everything and very active. I bet you will find one of those "dirty industries" there.

BTW: ALBANY and the NYS Gov't is the biggest waste generator in NY!

lol..... that's the truth. But seriously, that pic is just a tiny tiny part of Kodak Park. When you drive east on Ridge Road from Greece heading towards the city, you get a view of a few smokestacks that you can tell is definitely NOT steam. The Maplewood neighborhood in the city is right next to Kodak Park. It has some of the most beatiful and historc homes in the city, low crime, and well kept streets..... but the property values there are very, very low compaired to similar neighborhoods on the city's east side becasue of the pollution from Kodak Park and the high cancer rates in that area of the city. I belive it's the biggest "brownfield" Upstate after the Love Canal. That'll be the one good thing that results from the dramatic shrinking of kodak park and manufacturing. It's just not very attractive. Here's a picture showing what I was talkign about. It's looking east towards Kodak Park from Ridge Road (I think it's ridge road, not possitive) in Greece. My grandma lives right in the area this picture was taken from. (but it's not my picture)

wait, if it's passed Mt. Read that means it's in the city. lol.... I got that pic from the D&C's Greece section of "Our Towns". I demand a retake. That isn't only not representative of the town of greece.....it ain't even IN the town of Greece. Post a pic of Braddock bay or Edgmere drive or even the stone road area or something like that!

The PLANE was flying too high. That and it was pretty cloudy over PA that day. I wouldn't have had much to take pictures of. I was planning on taking pictures of Philly too because that was where we were supposed to stop on the way back to NC. But we ended up staying in Rochester longer to help my Grandma sort some things out, and drove her car back to NC instead.

Whoa, they let you on the plane like that? At your age?

Sorry, you left yourself open for that, I had to oblige. :)
