This building is particularly imposing:

Do you know what it's for and when it was built?
StormShadow August 8th, 2006, 02:24 AM That particular building is the BCEAO Tower. I could only imagine that it was built during the 80's, it is also one of the few 2-3 scrapers that is located in Bamako. I have no idea what it's personal facility use is, unfortunately.

why can't more contemporary african buildings look like this?
i think that obelisk was imported from ethiopia.
Massilia August 8th, 2006, 04:09 AM Found it: It's the BCEAO Bank Headquarters (Central Bank of West African States).
http://www.bceao.int/internet/bcweb.nsf/pages/obmali#bamako
But can't find any details on the building's history or characteristics..
Massilia August 8th, 2006, 04:16 AM ...and it's a 20-storey building : )
SE9 August 8th, 2006, 10:52 AM Wow, the BCEAO tower is awesome!
It has the appearance of a fortress.
StormShadow August 8th, 2006, 11:41 PM Thanks for the info Massilia, too bad we can't get info about it's age and it's use.

The American August 9th, 2006, 11:18 PM I agree with you arzaranh.
Constructing buildings with a distinctive African style will add more character to the cities.
JAB323 August 10th, 2006, 12:39 AM It actually looks a lot better than I would of imagined.

StormShadow August 10th, 2006, 01:26 AM ^^ I agree.
If you happen to have Google-Earth installed, when you have the time, observe the area around Bamako. You'll notice that on the southern portion of the city there are 2 areas that seems to be wealthier (large estates, when compared to other areas of the city) and the proprties are large, well vegetated and have swimming pools. 1 of these 2 wealthy areas is located on the south east portion of the city and it's on an island on the Niger River, it's connected to the main body of the city by 2 small bridges. The other wealthy area is just west of the island that I juse mentioned, you'll notice it rather quickly, the area is between the 2 large bridges, the Pont du Roi and the Pont des Martyrs, that particular area is also where the BCEAO Tower, Hotel Salam and the Palais de Congres are located.
Also, just right across the Niger River (going south), on the eastern side of the Pont des Martyrs bridge (eastern large bridge), there is another wealthy area, which this area extends to the east and has a small river between the eastern portion of it.
The American August 10th, 2006, 04:31 AM It is proven difficult to find relevant information on the Marché rose. By the looks of the white tarp I guess it is a Market (?).
Like the way this building looks. Using old architecture in a modern environment. Should be more of this in the city.

Sims January 23rd, 2007, 04:49 PM I love the design of Bamakos highrise BCEAO bank, it is purely in the spirit of the old Mali Empire. :) It's great that the ancient architecture lives on even if the ways of construction have changed.

why are the president's homes in third world countries always called 'palaces.'?
anyway, bamako is like northern nigeria and needs some improvement, though it has good things going for it like an appreciation of traditional architecture
StormShadow September 25th, 2007, 10:45 PM As far as these presidential residential estates being called palaces, I don't really know. lol
I agree, there is enough room for improvement. I also enjoy the "Sahelian-Malian" style architecture. Similar architecture is also found in Niamey and N'Djamena to an extent if recall correctly.

Yes and it should be more. I find Bamako more attractive than Accra.

I don’t now about “every” but Kadhafi had a special relationship with saharan and sahelian(nomadic and semi-nomadic) peoples.
He financed a lot of projects and gave away millions to all Sahelian regimes. Sometimes he flipped back and sponsored armed rebellions against the same regimes.
