View Full Version : Northeast Urban Photographers
BuffCity August 9th, 2006, 03:33 AM Hey everyone, there are a few of you on here and I have a question, perhaps a discussion for us.
Who are some of your favorite Urban Photographers on SSC or SSP?
They might be similar in style, maybe professional or maybe unique in some way all their own.
Be sure to give the member name and why you admire their work, and use their work to base your own photographic knowledge from.
BuffCity August 9th, 2006, 03:39 AM Giovanni Sasso - SSP Member, probably one of my favorites not because of perfect skylines and great building photos...but unique in that he captured the small things and the odd things while on photo tours of Philly especially.
West Side John - SSC Member and one of the more artisitc type photographers, I always welcome his photos because they are not typical urban scenes, yet he searches out the finer things to photograph.
Herodotus - SSC / SSP Member who brings fine work to the table with his great neighborhood shoots, very wandering and not affraid to capture the grit, the politics and the overall mood in one tour.
Hydogen - SSC Member from Chicago...just wonderful photos, one of those guys who could go anyplace and take a great set of photos.
These are my favorites, there are others and there are many whos work I enjoy looking at...but these stand out.
JAB323 August 9th, 2006, 04:41 AM I like Herodotus becasue his stuff is all northeast and he takes a lot of quality shots.
ROCguy August 9th, 2006, 04:47 AM Herodotus and Buffcity
Promiscuous Boy August 9th, 2006, 05:07 AM I haven't been in this forum for a long time, but I really enjoy Herodotus' photos and matt's as well, just because they photograph every city in PA and the quality of their photos are excellent!
JAB323 August 9th, 2006, 05:10 AM ^^ That's biased. :colgate:
herodotus August 9th, 2006, 05:32 AM BuffCity does one of the best jobs of representing his home city of anyone.
Sasso does great work, and is a nice guy to boot.
Volguus Zildrohar is another good guy. His is the master of night shooting.
Segun Dent aka:Goonsta, always has great threads. He is the master of the commercial strip.
Serge from Montreal is fantastic. I pity anyone who missed his Philly thread from last fall's forum meet there.
Both Flash and KC have websites full of great photos.
Can't leave out ColDayMan. He gets around like no one else I know.
JiveCity doesn't do too many photo threads, but his people pics are second to none.
herodotus August 9th, 2006, 05:33 AM Oh, can't forget Cirrus and his BeyondDC website. Outstanding!
Evergrey August 9th, 2006, 05:55 AM Herodotus' Pittsburgh neighborhood shots were what inspired me to ask my parents for a camera for Xmas a couple years back lol.
jmancuso August 9th, 2006, 06:03 AM BuffCity does one of the best jobs of erpresenting his home city of anyone.

Hehehe, c'mon I'm new, gimme a few more months :D
BuffCity August 9th, 2006, 06:43 AM I should mention WZ1 and NMOphoto...both of which I have had the pleasure of shooting with. NMO is a personal friend who I have learned urban photography with over the last 3 years.
Xusein August 9th, 2006, 07:05 AM Generally I respect all the photographers in a way...
They do, what I hope to do eventually, when I get myself a digital camera.
BuffCity August 9th, 2006, 07:11 AM once you start...you won't stop (unless your camera falls in the water)
Xusein August 9th, 2006, 07:54 AM
DarkFenX August 9th, 2006, 03:35 PM I want to nominate Flash too. All his/her pictures are extremely clear and well taken.
WZ1 August 10th, 2006, 03:47 AM Buffcity .. always have good shots, Serge in Montreal is great, Niwell from Ottawa.. keninottawa .. hmm who else.. from the southwest.. DonB is amazing.
Jaybird August 10th, 2006, 04:15 AM BuffCity - because his shots are always interesting, good, and professional, not to mention an overall great guy from the city of Buffalo, New York. He's got great night shots too, a true photographer.
steel - takes pride in Buffalo and great pics as well from Chicago.
WZ1 - what can I say, a Torontonian with Sabres season tickets and his shots of Buffalo and Toronto (and Hamilton) are always unique and interesting, awesome too. The night shots rule!
herodotus - many cities (in NYS and Pennsylvania), phototours are always impressive, never seen a lot of the towns/cities before and a big thank you for those.
xzmattzx - a Delaware native who loves the Philly sports teams and takes great photos of sports events, and has done great city shots of Philly, Buffalo, Port Colborne Ontario, among other places!
BuffCity August 10th, 2006, 07:23 AM there are some members down in NYC that are frickin great photo takers...alot of them actually.
AndySocks August 11th, 2006, 09:41 AM ^^
My big complaint about them however is that seem to limit themselves to Manhattan, DT Brooklyn, Long Island City and parts of Hudson County. As such, most of the NYC neighborhoods, and all of the downstate neighborhoods outside the city proper have no representation. I would do it if I had a camera and a car, but I don't have either :hammer:
BuffCity August 11th, 2006, 05:08 PM I totally agree...with so much south of Albany to see, it would be nice to see some Kingston, Yonkers, Harlem, Queens, Bronx or even staten Island.
I guess there are not too many photographers with cars down there. lol
There is alot to see in Manhattan, very easy to start liking photography of buildings and skylines, perhaps they feel as if there is enough for them in the city?
xzmattzx August 11th, 2006, 05:33 PM Some of the people I like for their photos are evergrey, herodotus, BuffCity, and Qazaq and hkskyline from SSC in general. hkskyline might be my favorite of all, because of the way he takes photos and because of all of the places he's been. I wish he would provide some commentary and stop with diaonal photos though.
Other people I like because of their photos and commentary together. Jaybird is one person; there are others but I can't think of them right now.
Generally, I like threads that give commentary, like the history of a building or some "fast facts" about the building or neighborhood pictured. I like to read about history, especially US History and US Cities' History, so I like some good commentary with the photos.
bungalowbuck August 11th, 2006, 07:25 PM i especially enjoy the photos of herodotus, ex-ithacan, xzmattzx and evergrey. they get beyond the downtown commercial districts and get into the neighborhoods. so many of the photo posters show wonderful shots of downtown high-rises, but they never venture out into the neighborhoods. cities are not just downtowns.
ROCguy August 12th, 2006, 12:39 AM I forgot, and I can't believe I forgot, to mention xzmattzx. He's done some excellent photo threads of cities and towns in Delaware, PA, and Upstate NY.
BuffCity August 14th, 2006, 08:05 AM i especially enjoy the photos of herodotus, ex-ithacan, xzmattzx and evergrey. they get beyond the downtown commercial districts and get into the neighborhoods. so many of the photo posters show wonderful shots of downtown high-rises, but they never venture out into the neighborhoods. cities are not just downtowns.
It is usually more fun to get photos of the Downtowns...tall bright buildings with lights and crazy stuff...captures peoples attention easier than a house built in 1942 by John Masonsmith...or whatever.
I get what you are saying though...you just have to understand what most people wanna see.
AndySocks August 14th, 2006, 03:12 PM The NE board is great with taking pictures outside of downtowns, I just wish the west coast forumers would follow your lead, simply because I already know what NE cities look like, but I'm really curious about the west and I never see pictures of just plain old neighborhoods on their forums. Mostly crap like "oh, here's Burbank, see how urban it's getting!?!?!? One building is now twenty stories OMG!" but all I see is the main street, which doesn't give any kind of sense as to how urban the rest of the city is. I'm aware that west coast cities are generally more suburban in residential neighborhoods than NE cities are, but to what extent I have no idea because I never see it, or have ever been there (except to Phoenix, but that's an extreme example, there is nothing in the entire city to suggest any form of urbanity).

I agree...Seattle, San Fran and Portland are all cities that could do this...even Denver.
Perhaps our strongest asset in the NE is the fact that we have "Great" neighborhoods and that we should exploit them to show what kind of urbanity we really have up here.
