What mode of transport should Brisbane have for Rapid Transport from New Farm to West End/UQ?? Think about viability aswell, not just what you want.

Why such a significance of UQ - the other universities have equal numbers do they not? Is the current public transport system to UQ defficient in some way?

As i said before...The outcome predictable and pointless... I just voted for a Subway even though Monorails are better for Light rail... Its a conflict of things... Trams and monorails aren't rapid transit!

Don't people see this is like comparing an Airport to a Seaport!! well, that's a bit over exaggerated, but you get what i mean! you just can't compare Light rail with Heavy rail.

New Farm to West End/UQ?

The proposal in the draft City Plan is for Newstead to West End.

UQ is the second largest contributor to traffic in Brisbane after the CBD, yet is still fails to have a train line or major highway.

I voted for subway, since it is the mode that would have the most use, but on the topic of monrail v light rail I'm very much for the later.

underground subway definately but im still sure we will see light rail at surface anyway. im not for monorails just for the privacy and shadowing issues. IMO, im not for towering transport infrastructure.

Light Rail all the way. Though maybe the post should have been Light Rail vs Monorail after all...

I think by the time other alternative go out to tender, modern low cost PRT solutions such as ULTra (currently being installed at T5 Heathrow) may come into the picture as well as all the traditional stuff. PRT has had a bad name in the past, but more modern pragmatic solutions offer the best combination of individulised point to point, with a public shared solution. ULTra also offers intermodal integration with Car and could also use the bus lanes and could therefore may be an attractive solution for a city such as Brisbane with no Trams/light rail or underground. After all why adopt a 20th century solution, when you could have a 21st century one.

I agree, any form of towering or elevated transport (monorails, elevated freeways) would be a backwards move. It has proven in the past to be less desirable. Just look at the cities in the USA (eg Boston) that have gone to great expense to remove them in exchange for tunnels and subways.

Well, I go for light rail as it can be inter-connected with rail - somehow. Undergrounding would cost a bomb. Not sure what PRT and Ultra are. So far the PLAN seems to be all about Public transport but somewhere down the bottom will be a few lines about some more road projects - which always manage to get built while the PT proposals stall for decades.

Please no not a monorail! They're so ugly and 80s! The towering infrastructure doesn't improve a streetscape at all - we don't need more concrete! And you have to access them by stairs/lifts/escalators - whereas a tram you just step on/off at street level, so they're better for short hops. West End to the city isn't that far so running trams on traffic calmed streets and traffic light prioritised intersections wouldn't take that long. If you wanted to expand it further out into the suburbs you could use the busway corridors as dual bus/tram.

Could the tram or light rail or whatever you want to call it be integrated into a future subway? I'm sure this happens in some cities in Germany - i seem to remember when I was in Cologne they had underground tram lines in the city centre - kind of like a subway.

San Fransisco's light rail (Muni) uses the subway for the innercity. Once beyond there it reverts back to using normal roads etc. In a perfect world that would be the ideal solution for Brisbane.

PRT stands for Personal Rapid Transit take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_rapid_transit it is thought that this sort of solution will become popular in the near future (30 years) for dense urban area's. Its advantages are that it combines the benefits of personalised service with a public sharable system and supports high density transit. It would be perfect for the CBD and the surrounding area's out to say 5 or 6 km, there would then be transfer to other forms of transit.

new farm & west end dont need a mass transit because they have relatively low patronage. mass transit is needed for more populated routes like the 111 and 130

and also i voted monorail not for west end/new farm/uq but i think brisbane may need it.
i think UQ are asking a lot out of BCC, they want another 2 bridges linking them to West End and the other to Yeronga. if UQ wants it, they should pay for it.

I'm wondering where you've pulled this nonsense from?

1) both 111 and 130 are busway routes - strictly speaking busways are a rapid transit system.
2) The west end and new farm buses don't have low patronage at all, plus (at least the west end services) have been must faster than average.
3) UQ doesn't not want any more connections with the south, and have made this clear several times - especially given that any other bridges would no doubt be open to cars....
