A group of Moroccan nationals who were expulsed from Algeria by local authorities in 1975 have made a call to recover their properties and assets after their illegal expulsion.
Mohamed Ben Mehdi who leads an association that defends the right of these people to recover their rights, said these victims have called on the Algerian government to hand back their properties and assets.
Ben Mehdi, who estimated to 40,000 the number of the Moroccan families expelled by Algeria, told the Arabic-speaking daily "Assabah" that the association will inform the international human rights organizations about this situation in order to exert pressure on Algeria.
The families were expelled manu militari from Algeria after the Green March (November 6, 1975) in which more than 350,000 Moroccans marched into the Sahara, a former Spanish colony retrieved by the North African country under the Madrid Accords signed with Spain and Mauritania. The Polisario, a guerilla movement backed by Algeria, has been ever since laying claims over the territory.
The Algerian security forces broke into the homes of those Moroccans, put them in buses, and drove them towards the border with Morocco.
