wow, these pics are really great. I have bearly heard of these city before but the pics of Blantyre really give a pleasent impression of it.

^^ Indeed. Blantyre is the biggest city in Malawi with a population around 646,235, and Lilongwe has a population around 597,619. I was really amazed with Blantyre since it's a city I rarely heard or seen anything about.

I've never been to Blantyre, but I've been to Lilongwe twice... its a beautiful city, with great foliage.

Both cities look OK regarding Malawi is one of the poorest country in the world.

I have been to Malawi and I can say that this is a fair assessment. I must add though that yes they are good, but cannot be compared to Cities like Nairobi (Where I have been) or Abuja

I must say that Lilongwe and Blantyre can compare with second tier cities in Nigeria, such as Umuahia, Ilorin and Mombasa in population, but a bit behind in infrastructure.
By the way, Blantyre is a bigger city than Lilongwe.

Lilongwe actually looks alright but it is definitely behind Lagos and Abuja.

But the city is quite developed by African standards (Forgive me for using that term).

Malawi might be a poor country, but Lilongwe looks better than a lot of cities I have seen. I see a lot of development, and the city is arguably better than secondary cities in countries like, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana.

Nice City, a couple more years of steady development, and it could be a Major city regionally.

Nice thread. It's hard to find decent pictures of these cities on the web. I visited both cities in 2005 and as other people already stated, they look pretty neat considering how poor Malawi is. Especially the city centre of Blantyre looks pretty nice, although some other areas in the city and its sister city Limbe are a big mess.

Thanks for showing us beautiful pics of Malawi's largest city BLantyre and the capital Lilongwe. Enjoyed it :okay: It's absolutely beyond imagination as medias always portray negative image of Malawi ( like famine and others ).

I'm really surprised with Malawi. It's really not as bad as the media portrays it to be... they made it seem like Madonna's adoption of that little boy was the biggest thing that ever happened to Malawi.

Well, admittedly the country does have a number of major issues with the lack of doctors, food, etc, etc. But what they have done is kept the place relatively orderly and organized, and that is why it looks so good. There are problems, but they've kept order so far.

from those pictures, i can see that i personally prefer blantyre! the cities look very peaceful and decently-maintained. i'm pleasantly-surprised here. i mean, come on, you never see the really nice parts of malawi (or africa, in general) on the tv. pretty sad, indeed.

Blantyre and Lilongwe really surprised me! I would never expected some kinds of cities in a country like Malawi - one of the poorest countries in the world. First of all, before i entered on thread, i was prepared to see something like Bangui, the CAR capital. Them, the well-cleaned streets and the modern-styled buildings makes me feel in some of the best cities in african continent (in my opinion, of course), like Gaborone or Windhoek, for example. In the same way, i liked the church (nevertheless, i'm not a religious guy - i'm atheist), it seems like a british style or something like that.

Analyzing the HDI (0.457) and the GDP Per capta ($328) - both data from wikipedia - the cities appear to be richer than that. So, like the Zimbabweans Cities, as Bulawayo and Harare, that seems to be in a good level of development (in infrastructure) for african continent, i supose that malawi had a crash in its economy, and now is suffering the consequences (?).

To the friends that already be in these cities: is a good place to visit? how about the security, hotels and stuffs?
