Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia. It is located in south central Zambia at 15°25′S 28°17′E, on a plateau at 1280 m (4200 ft) in altitude. It has a population of 1,084,703 (2000 census).

Lusaka was founded in 1905 by European settlers, at the site of a village named after the village headman Lusaaka. Due to its central location in the country, in 1935 it replaced Livingstone as the capital of the British colony Northern Rhodesia. After the federation of Northern and Southern Rhodesia in 1953, it was a centre of the civil disobedience movement that led to the creation of the independent state of Zambia. In 1964 it became the capital of the newly independent Zambia.

The city centre lies around Cairo Road, around which lie the New City Market and Kamwala Market, a major shopping area, and the Zintu Community Museum. Further east lies the government area, around the Cathedral Hill and Ridgeway areas. Other suburbs include Elizabetha Villa, Fairview, Kabulonga, Kabwata (a working class area, home to the Kabwata Cultural Centre), Madras, Manda Hill (another major shopping area), Northmead (known for its nightlife), Olympia Park, Rhodes Park, Roma, Thorn Park and Woodlands.

Attractions include Lusaka National Museum, the Political Museum, the Zintu Community Museum, the Freedom Statue, the Zambian National Assembly, the Agricultural Society Showgrounds (known for their annual show), the Moore Pottery Factory, the Lusaka Playhouse theatre, a cinema, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, a centotaph, a golf club, the Lusaka Central Sports Club, and the zoo and botanical gardens of the Munda Wanga Environmental Park. The city is also home to the University of Zambia.

The city is home to Lusaka International Airport and lies on the railway line from Livingstone to Kitwe.

Lusaka will host the 2011 All-Africa Games.

^^ Thanks Matthias. Lusaka is a difficult city to collect recent photos since it seems that not much people visit Lusaka when compared to Lilongwe, for example. Lusaka is like Harare when it comes to tracking recent photos on the internet, that is.

Lusaka has beautiful combination of modernity and traditional heritage charm, which is a big plus ! I also saw the same " Shoprite " when I browsed Luanda pics yesterday . I like those 6-lane avenues in the downtown-- very green and well-planted all along the way with colourful plants.

I've lived in Zambia for over 5 years in the 90s and my father is still there and is on his 14th year I believe.
In all that time, one building that was started when we arrived has been finished and the 2 strip malls seen in these pictures have been built by South Africans. That's it.
It really is a shame. It's a peaceful, relatively democratic country that has not had any war so it really has no excuses for not doing more.

Well, I was there summer of 2006, during the boom in copper prices. It seemed like there was a slight momentum building, if you know what I mean. There were a couple of buildings u/c and a couple of shopping centers in the works. That's about all I saw, however, it's a change from was the case beforehand when nothing happened at all.

Well, people are starting to recognize that Zambia is attractive as an investment opportunity.

Zambia: Country Attractive for Investors

THE World Bank and international business community have listed Zambia as an attractive country for foreign investors and its economy is now one of the fastest growing in the world.

German representative for sub Saharan Africa in the ministry of Economics and Technology Knut Brunjes said in Berlin yesterday that this year's World Bank Business had shown that Zambia had become a more attractive country for foreign investors.

Speaking when President Mwanawasa met potential investors at CommerzBank, Mr Brunjes said since Zambia was in competition with other countries for foreign direct investment, it was important that it created a positive business environment.

Hesaid the World Bank and the international business community were pleased that Zambia had reformed several aspects of its business environment.

Mr Bunjes said the Zambian economy was now one of the fastest growing economies of the world because of the good policies that the Government had put in place.

The German government said the visit by President Mwanawasa to Germany would not only boost existing bilateral relations but would also be used by German business houses as a stepping stone to invest in the Zambian economy.

Earlier, Dr Mwanawasa urged German business houses to take advantage of the long standing friendly ties and favourable investment policiesto invest in the Zambian economy.

Dr Mwanawasa said the business community in Germany should not be mere spectators of the positive developments taking place in Zambia.

He said Zambia had received over U.S.$2.5 billion Foreign Direct Investment in the mining, tourism, energy andmanufacturingsectors last year.

The President said he was in Germany to partly encourage German entrepreneurs to be part of the economic re-awakening taking place in Africa and Zambia in particular.

Dr Mwanawasa who is also Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairman said since independence, the country had enjoyed peace, a pre-requisite for safety of foreign investment.

Hesaid the country had achieved a lot with regard to the performance of the economy, which has registered an average growth rate of five per cent per year for the past five years while inflation had been reduced to single digit levels.

President Mwanawasa said because of the confidence that had been generated in the Zambian economy, the country attractedhuge investments in the last one and half years.

He said the country had managed to attract investment because it has established sound governance structures based on the rule of law and respect for private property.

Dr Mwanawasa said that corruption in Zambia was strongly discouraged by prosecuting suspects.

The President said prudent socio-economic management and total abolition of exchange controls had also encouraged investment in the country.

Other steps taken to encourage investment involved reduction of red tape in setting up and conducting business in the country.

Dr Mwanawasa said attractive fiscal incentives for investors have also attracted investment into the country's booming economy.

The President explained that investment opportunities existed in abundance in the energy, mining, tourism and the manufacturing sectors.

Dr Mwanawasa also held private talks with the Federal Republic of German President Horst Kohler at Bellevue Castle, the Federal President's office.

I'm not sure. If I had to take a guess, i'd say early to mid 80's.

I'd agree on the late 70's to mid 80's also. Not many towers dominate Lusaka's skyline and the structure with the extended 'crown' seems to be it's tallest.

I don't see any developments going on in Lusaka.

I do see some signs here and there but I was appecting more since the economy has been gorwing steadly for a decade now. Maybe once it reaches a few more years the development will really start to pic up.

Maybe images of the residental areas will give a better impression.

For me Lusaka and Zambia has a lot of interest. Both cultural and economic.

I have travelled there in 2004 because some relatives lived there in Kitwe. They have worked in a minning supply enterprise.

As a tourist i have had the opportunity to visit the city centre, the zambiam museum (a modern one near the centre), the ministry of foreign affairs (colonial building), the supreme court (colonial building) and some craft markets. Also I have the opportunity to stay at the holiday Inn and visit The Manda Hill and The Arcades shopping malls.

I know China PR it's investing in Zambia's economy. Also I know about the indian population and their commercial activity.

The "modern" buildings seems to be build in the eighties. There are no modern tall buildings than those in the city centre.

The airport seems to be build in sixties. Have no much fligths, but maybe could be interesting rebuild or modernise some parts.

I also know Livingstone city, the old capital. It is a new resort and touristic area. I stayed at The Zambeze Sun hotel near the Victoria falls. Was really wonderfull.

As a result I have a zambian friend who lives in Livingstone. His name is Sam Musesa.

I expect go back to Zambia again!

You welcome DanteXavier!

For me was really interesting the "plots". A large court where houses are build. Maybe one!

At the same time, I was really surprise about the (maybe) thousands of people who cut stones in the areas near of Lusaka. The cut that stones to build their houses.

I have two wonderful books of Zambia that I bougth in a book seller in The Arcades. Sometimes I read that books again and travel again to that country. I expect I could go back again. I would like to visit my friend, some spanosh friends in Kitwe and the Bartose (Lozi) king celebration.

First of all, i would like to thank everyone for there interest in my country. It's good to see people showing interest since most people outside Southern Africa don't even know where it is so i really appreciate your interest.

I do however have to agree with the person who said that we have no excuse for not developing. I guess maybe what Zambia might be lacking is entrepreneurship.

I just wanted to add a picture of another shopping mall that was built at around 2004-2005 (im not sure the date).

It's called "Downtown Shopping Mall" and is located in the lusaka business district (or town centre if you like)

http://photos1.hi5.com/0017/764/594/Um8Udh764594-02.jpg

(The picture shows downtown shopping mall a few months after completion. It is bigger than this though but this is a bad picture)

This is my first time on this site so i hope the picture loads. It is not the best picture of the mall but at least you can see how it looks like. There is also another mall in the residential area of woodlands, it's called "crossroads shopping mall" and it was built by Zambians and is run by Zambians. Unfortunately i don't have a picture of it but it looks nice, only problem is it's small but i guess it's ok for a country like Zambia.

For those who have more pics, please post some more.

Thanks

Yes please do - I have lived in Zambia from 79 to 89 in Kitwe- schooled at the Kitana Mine Trust (Dad used to work for the ZCCM) then at the then premier Mpelembe Secondary school. I loved the country - the best climate i have experienced and friendly gentle people. Had driven down to/through Lusaka a few times and it does come across at a bustling modern(ish) city with the 60s 70s charm about it. Though Lusaka was the only city in Zambia which was a bit hurried if you look at the traffic in the central business district - the rest of the country has a calm laid back feel - with a stress free pace of life.

It is high time now for this lovely country to develop - it was a middle income nation soon after independence but overt depenence on copper exports proved to be it's undoing which hit the economy real hard after the copper prices fell. It still shocks me to see how the Kwacha has been devalued with bread costing K 2000/- in that shoprite store. It used to be a few Ngwee in the late 70s n early 80s.

I think now things are looking up - development needs to percolate beyond the copperbelt and the north south stretch between the Copperbelt, Lusaka and Livingstone. Loved the game parks and Victoria falls. Hope to visit as a tourist sometime to rekindle old memories of the places where I spent some of the best years of my life.

Sir. when people say Congo, they mean DRC, not Congo- Brazza. Unless they specifically say Congo Brazza. Just a little correction.

With much peace doesn't look like much has changed since 60s.Its president needs to stay home and get serious. Also diversify from copper, expand tourism and embrace entrepreneurship.I can see even kenyans are happy to be there doing business yet they have no oil,no minerals and their companies are all over from s sudan to Ug to zambia and, with ethiopians, have profit making airliners all over africa.Their capitals(eth+ken, even zim) are miles ahead.Hoping to set foot there one day.
Well, life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage zambians and i believe zambia can do with"yes we can"

The Independence Stadium was built from 1963 to 1964 to be used in hosting Zambia's independence celebrations. In the 2000s, safety concerns have become a concern. The stadium's grandstand was demolished in 2007.

http://www.zambianfootball.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/independence-stadium-aerial-view.jpg

I think this stadium needs to be demolished outright and a brand-new sports complex is built in its place. The centrepiece is a 70K national stadium. Perhaps it should open in a calendar year ending with a "4".

The Zamsure flats. I've lived here for a short period of time. It's filled with Indians.

From the angle, I can tell the picture was taken from the back of the relatively newly-built Chinese-owned hotel facing Great East Rd. Forgot the name though. I'll look it up.

eta: looked it up; it's the Golden Bridge Hotel.

This is along Great East Road just after Arcades Shopping Centre, opposite Radisson Blu. It's called Acacia Park.

Beautiful city. Lusaka's downtown area is very simple, yet very fascinating in its unique look.
