View Full Version : Semites
Katoom August 16th, 2006, 11:00 PM In the Arab world, Arabs consider them selves to be Semites, and they find it hilarious when Americans call certain Arabs "Anti-Semetic". And some Arabs refer to Jews as "Wled a'amna" (our cousins), because Jews are Decendents of Isaac son of Abraham, and Arabs are the decendents of Ishmael son of Abraham.
I was wondering what do the Jews think about both these ideas(Semites and Cousins) ?
ZOHAR August 16th, 2006, 11:01 PM ^^the same here...
eklips August 16th, 2006, 11:53 PM semites are those who speak a semitic language, arabic, hebrew etc.

everythingisone August 17th, 2006, 01:47 AM The term 'anti semitic' denotes hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group, regardless of any other connotation associated with the word 'semite'.
Katoom August 17th, 2006, 02:27 AM Thank you for your Clarification
eklips August 17th, 2006, 02:36 AM I hate the term antisemitic, it was invented by racist europeans in the 19th century.
Today it is a way to imply a make a difference between anti-jewish racism and the other forms of racism, and thus implies some sort of hierarchy between them...

:hahaha: Like Zohar said, we do the same too, although I know it being used
often by Russian speakers in Israel. Rarely heard it used in Hebrew. Mostly done
so that any Arabs overhearing wouldn't understand that people are talking about
them :).

I never considered the implication of hierarchy. Why do you think it implies some hierarchical relationship rather than simply implying the specific bias and/or racism described in meaning of the word itself?

Simply because the usage of an other term implies that there is a difference between anti-jewish racism and the other forms of racism, which is partialy true, but then all forms of racism are different from each other and have different causes and consequences in different societies, which is why, the general term "racism" is used, and the fact that an exeption is made for jews makes me uncomfortable.
When organisations say they want to fight racism and antisemitism, in the end, it is like if they meant that antisemitism was not racism, something that I find dangerous.
Emirati_Girl August 17th, 2006, 04:09 PM The arabs were called as a semites in some resources and they came originaly from The Arabian Peninsula .... :sleepy:

The Proto-Semitic peoples, ancestors of the Semites in the Middle East before the break-up of the hypothesized original proto-Semitic language into various modern Semitic languages, are thought to have been originally from either the Arabian Peninsula (particularly around Yemen) or the Ethiopian Highlands, but its homeland is still much debated and uncertain.

jsogdi November 8th, 2006, 08:23 AM I think the term anti-semitic is outdated. Western European Christina racists invented it when the concept of encountering another semite (arab, berber, somali, ethiopian, etc, etc) was unthinkable.
I also thin the word "philistine" to mean uncultured and brash is terrible. "Filastin," or "Falastin" is the arabic word for what is now divided between Israel and the occupied territories. It is an outdated word tracing back to ancient hebrews dislike other ancient people in the region. It is basically racist. Like calling someone a "mongoloid".
shawarma November 9th, 2006, 09:55 PM so much rubbish in one post.
1) so what do you want to call arabs who hate jews? because the way islam is going, theres so many that we need a name for it.. so you have a proposal?
antijewites?
2) philistine is a term for an ancient extinct people that came from crete and greece and were iron workers and settled in gaza. they were outsiders and sea traders. the romans that exiled israelites called it phillistia on purpose to erase the jewish presence. for example they changed the jewish city called sechem to niapolis which arabs that came much later called niabolis and nablus. the same with jerusalem, tiberias - they gave all jewish cities in what is today jordan and israel roman names.
philistine has nothing to do with palestinians who adopted this term in the 20th century. it was under ottoman occupation and called mistakenly greater syrian, they all saw themselves as syrian. the crusaders and british used palestine after the romans. so ironically, its a european term imposed on this land and under british mandate both arabs and jews saw themselves as palestinians.
both arabs and jews called this land canaan. the nowdays "palestinians" have no connection to canaanites or philistines. they are descendants of pan-syrian and iraqi tribes in the arab invasions from 638 onwards. galilee arabs arrived from iraq in the 19th century, some were bedoin wandering tribes that robbed trade routes in the region of izrael valley (then swamp lands) and nowdays jordan.

The jews are the real invaders they stole the land from the canaanites who originated from yemen... besides I colored in red your cofirmation that it belonged to the canaanites before it did to the jews thought jews called it Canaan but when they took it they called it Judea. The filistines are the mix of a macedonian tribe that settled in palestine and the local canaanites.
Now for the name of the cities, Jaffa for example is actually called Yafa and its the name of an ancient city in yemen that is other proof of the origins.
And saying they are descendants of pan-syrian and iraqi tribes shows how ignorant you are because most of those who settled in palestine, lebanon, jordan and syria! were tribes from the arabian peninsula and yemen. Galilee Arabs always were there... you should read more history but make sure its not a british source or a jewish source.
shawarma November 10th, 2006, 10:55 AM 1. all zuabi tribes villages in galillee are 20th century when they emmigrated from iraq. same with galilee bedoins who never had any villages.
2. jews originated in ur kasdim, and are the real iraqi's and jordanians and we were in the middle east before any arab called himself arab.
3. this land was promised and given to israelites as written in the quran and bible, and so it was. "arabs" invaded into here much afterwards. the phoenicians and canaanites and egyptians and assyrians and israelites werent arabs and so werent philistines, who werent even from this area.
romans forced all sorts of captured convicts from around their empire to settle in judeah and samariah so jews could not come back from exile.
then arabs invaded all these lands and arabized them like they did with persians and north africa.
Yafo - sure its yemenite, whatever. It is mentioned four times in the Hebrew Bible, as one of the cities given to the Tribe of Dan (Book of Joshua 19:46), as port-of-entry for the cedars of Lebanon for Solomon's Temple (2 Chronicles 2:15), as the place from whence the prophet Jonah embarked for Tarshish (Book of Jonah 1:3) and than as port-of-entry for the cedars of Lebanon for the Second Temple of Jerusalem (Book of Ezra 3:7).
Yafa in ancient and modern hebrew is a place of beauty or beautiful.
Jews lived in gaza and yafo and acco for hundreds of years
but its yemenite, so..
oh wait, we also had yemenite jews living 1000 years in yemen, so where are they? in yafo? ok, so justice is restored, yafo is yemenite again
when palestinians stop erasing jewish and israelite history of israel, then you can morally also come to us and tell us what other sources to read.
svs December 1st, 2006, 02:15 AM My two cents worth. Jews definitely consider Arabs to be Semites(descendants of Noah's son Shem) and recognize kinship relating to descent from Abraham. The Jews from Abraham and Sarah by way of Issac and the Arabs fromAbraham and Hagar by way of Ishmael. We consider the Arabs cousins and are generally dismayed by the hostility between Arabs and Jews, particularly over the last hundred years or so.
Antisemite is a poor term but its use developed in Europe and dealt with hostility to Jews pretty exclusively. At the time there were very few non Jewish Semites around to hate. So even though Arabs are Semites, those that hate Jews are also antisemites. I don't know of a term that refers to people that hate Arabs and G-d knows there are more than a few of those around, but antisemite would not be that term. I can see how this could be confusing to those born in the Middle East.

The hate and ignorance in this post is truly a cause for sadness to anyone who thinks and loves peace.

the "westren and Jewish " sources are free and undepandable unlike the Arab or Islamic ones.
TalB December 5th, 2006, 02:14 AM The statements about Arabs being anti-semetic on the Jews is just as ironic as the Christians hating the Jews also.
