View Full Version : #295 - Citibank Building, New York City
New Jack City May 6th, 2003, 11:38 PM Height: 201m/658 feet
Floors: 50
Year: 1990
Location: Long Island City, Queens
Architect: SOM
On a direct axis with the Citicorp headquarters building at 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan, the 1,375,000 sf building is placed on a two-acre site bounded by wide streets and small parks, a landmarked residential block, and a historic courthouse. The 50-story tower with its curtain wall of glass spandrels enclosing pale green metal panels features graduated corner setbacks at the highest floors, and is a defining element of the Long Island City skyline. A low-rise building adjacent to the tower houses ancillary services and retail space, while a seven-story glass-enclosed rotunda is the focal point for the entrance plaza, two subway stations, and the pedestrian concourse entrance.
An "intelligent" building, the design incorporates computerized building management systems for life safety, security, HVAC, and energy savings. Easy-access raised flooring throughout all office space permits rapid installation and renovation of power, telephone, and computer signal needs, and is especially suited for fiber-optics technology. The tower contains floors of approximately 26,000 sf and features 45-foot clear spans from a central elevator and service core.
Did You Know?
The Citibank Building is the Tallest building on Long Island.

I love the setbacks and the base, a bit like BoA in Dallas. The glass could be better though. Strange that I've not seen it before.
BGT May 7th, 2003, 12:14 AM 8.5/10 I like the colors. It sticks out from the rest of the skyline because it's by itself.

You probably haven't seen it before because the building is in Queens rather than Manhattan. Although, it's right across the river. I think if the building was in Manhattan it would be one of those hid treasures.

interesting tower
3tmk November 15th, 2003, 05:39 AM I love that building. Its the one thing I always look when going through Queensborough bridge. 10/10
Especially the fact that its not in Manhattan gives it an A+, because its looks better alone. But I never knew it was over 200m high. I always figured its 150m max
SeeMacau November 21st, 2003, 03:54 AM Tallest building in the area
I like the design of the building
Really nice facade

MCC December 22nd, 2003, 07:17 PM 8.5/10 There are some good views of this building when you ride the subway into Manhattan from Queens.
skyperu34 June 5th, 2004, 06:19 AM the queen of Queens......7
New Jack City June 7th, 2004, 02:12 AM 8.5/10...I see this big guy towering over everyday, if you look at it enough, you'll start loving it. It's Queens jewel for now and the tallest tower outside of Manhattan. It looks so isolated but I think it's location compliments the tower well. The color and facade is pretty interesting, but when you see the tower up close, it looks kind of messy/sloppy.
The setbacks at the top are a good ending to the tower's overall great massing.
BTW, it has a brand new Citibank logo at the top now and lights up bright at night! I'll try and snap it.
Here's a picture I got of it one afternoon:

Great setbacks. The logo at the top kind of spoils it though.
Þróndeimr November 24th, 2004, 06:11 PM Nice glass facade, but the tower has a too boring shape. 7/10
DamienK November 25th, 2004, 12:41 PM Magestic shape, but i don't like the colour. 6.5/10
NY1 February 6th, 2005, 02:00 AM It's so lonely, yet so close. It's on the wrong side of the river IMO. I would have built small mid-size almost surburban office park in LIC. That might have benfited the city much more.
TYW February 13th, 2005, 12:23 PM nice building. the only drawback is that it is too fat
8/10
MattSal April 1st, 2005, 01:57 AM Sometime good, and sometimes bad. I give it a 6.5/10. :dunno:

DecoJim December 19th, 2005, 02:15 AM Location means people will notice it (instead of being lost in Manhattan).
Design is better than 1960s boxes but the setbacks are not very well proportioned.

AndySocks April 2nd, 2006, 06:34 PM Not the best building, but if things go the way I'm hoping, the Queens waterfront should have a pleasant enough skyline before I'm dead (Pepsi sign and all!). This building was the first step, and only in very recent history have any further steps been made. A very biased 7.5
