The following are links to the same 3:57mins video of the yet to be built Berlin Brandenburg International Airport in the south-east of the city. Opening is scheduled for late 2011 (if we are lucky - so still some way to go).
Opening capacity: up to 25 million (so not much compared to some Asian projects). Hopefully, it will make for a nice mid-sized airport worthy the German capital (anything would be an improvement compared to the current airport system). :)

Mr. Fusion August 18th, 2006, 01:54 AM Questions:
1 - Has contruction began? If not, has a date been set, or are there still budget and land issues to be worked out?
2 - Will the completion of this airport mean the closure of Tegel and Tempelhof for certain?
3 - In other renderings I have seen the terminal building, the concourse connected to it, and a partially completed satellite concourse, instead of the two fully completed satellites as shown above. Which is the plan to be completed end 2011?
Thank you for the videos. :grouphug:
Tricky August 18th, 2006, 05:43 AM To 1 - No, not yet. Officially, construction will begin on 5th September 2006 (so only a few days to go). No land issues, but some discussion still around the overall costs (some people still prefer a cheaper option (EUR2.5bn+, e.g. without underground railway station directly under the terminal) ..... but the states and the government have already said that they won't change the plans again. :)
To 2 - for Tegel yes, most definately. For Tempelhof I would still put a question mark over it. As per the Berlin Senate's policy, they want Tempelhof to be closed first (as early as next year), however, due to its popularity and obvious advantage of serving as a future business/city airport (similar to London's city airport) there is a lot of resistance from many lobby groups to close it. So my feeling is that the last word hasn't been spoken as yet. Tegel, however, is too big to be kept open once BBI is in place.
To 3 - These plans (as shown below) are the latest plans, so forget everything else you saw before in the past. There have been many different renders before as a few years back the Berlin airports were due to be privatised, and each interested party / investor had their own teams of architects providing different ideas to the general public (e.g. a spectacular one including a very cool skywalk as connection between terminals). Everything fell through when the privatisation efforts were terminated and the states/government decided to build it with tax payers' money instead (they do, however, want to privatise it further down the track once BBI is up and running - then at a premium obviously). :)
Hope this helps! :)

Mr. Fusion August 18th, 2006, 05:56 AM Very good, thanks Tricky!
Tricky August 18th, 2006, 06:28 AM I'm really curious about more detailed plans for the Terminal (interior design etc.), but that's probably still a while to go before those would be made public. I also believe that they'd have to start building the first satellite fairly soon (2013 or so) as the 25 million capacity would be easily reached by then..... but then again, many airports managed to handle many millions of passengers more than what terminal capacity was designed for.... e.g. Heathrow, currently Bangkok..... any other examples?
ZZ-II August 19th, 2006, 02:16 AM Wow, the new Airport will be great when completed.

Perhaps if you run a search or two auf Deutsch it will turn up more things. I have noticed that a lot about multi-lingual websites, they tend to put more content on the site in the native tongue.

So will the airport open with only the Terminal building and attached concourse at the 2011 date, and expand from there?
Another example of an overworked terminal is Kai Tak, though closed now:

Tried that already, mate. :) ... there is nothing, yet. So we have to wait. :) :(
So will the airport open with only the Terminal building and attached concourse at the 2011 date, and expand from there?
It will open with the main terminal building only. The first satellite will, by the looks of it, come later. But as I said before, I think it may make sense either build the first satelitte as well, or increase the Terminal capacity to say 30 million, as Berlin will definately have more than 25 million passengers by Nov 2011 (the scheduled opening date/year for BBI). :)
Cheers.
