This thread is set up for those who can post photos of Libreville, capital of Gabon. I noticed a very good posting done of the second largest city Port Gentil, which also is a base for the oil industry. Also include photos of new projects and developments. Matthias I know you must have alot on this city as well. Look forward to your posts!

OK.Here we go. It is hard to find any recent photos on Libreville. Most you see here date back from 2000 and 2001 or even older. In the last two years many things have been modernised (due to more money from oil) and new buildings have spring up....but as Gabon is still no tourist place very few photos do exist. Here are a few, nervertheless. I hope you like them, I will keep on adding.

Thank you.
Libreville is a small city by African standards (although it is the capital of Gabon). And it is pleasant to live there. By the way, are you Polynesian, can you give me a link to a thread that shows Polynesian Cities? :)

ONE BIG PROBLEM with Libreville is that there are very few photos of projects or newly constructed buildings on the internet. You can read in the Gabonese newspapers that new building are continously inaugurated but there are no photos of them. Currently the Chinese are building a "Cité de l´ Information", a big project consisting of various office blocks and a small campus. They also build new ministry buildings. The French (in corporation with local firms) are soon beginning with the new ultra-modern international airport. You have got that huge waterfront project for 400$ million and so on. Then I read recently that a glitzy hotel tower of more than 30 floors is in its planning stages in Libreville by an Arab construction firm. It will be the highest building in entire Gabon....but again no photos. For those who have been to Gabon ,or Libreville to be more precise, know that some cranes and/or construction sites are dotting the cityscape all the time constructing new buildings, roads etc. but that country is very lazy at marketing itself, unfortunately. :bash: This is certainly due the fact that Gabon is not yet a tourist place like Ghana, Uganda, Namibia, South Africa or Senegal, for example. (although the country has all what it takes to become a tourist place.) Nevertheless, I try to find pics and continue to post them.

From Libreville there is a train that leaves to Gabon´s third largest city called Franceville (which is in the eastern part of the country). This extravagant project was completed at a staggering cost of more than $2 billion dollars in the 80´s by the Gabonese government. Four years back it was partly privatised and the company is running very well. Trains and railnetwork is well maintained! The train is called "Transgabonais". Although I didn´t take the trip when I was in Gabon, people told it is worth it; an epic journey right through endless miles of deep equatorial rainforest, savannah hills and lush greenery with almost no soul that crosses your path. The plane from Libreville to Franceville will take 40-45 minutes or one can also go on a newly constructed interregional expressway.

Some more backround information on the Transgabonais rail

A new TES™ satellite system from HNS is now supporting the Transgabonais Railway network in Gabon, Central Africa. The rail network plays a vital role in the economic life of Gabon and the surrounding region as well.

Railway infrastructure is critical to Gabon’s economic growth

The network consists of 22 stations including the central station in Libreville, the capital. Because it is a single-track system, with passing tracks every 30 kilometers, providing accurate, timely updates of train arrivals and departures for coordination is critical to maintain safe operations.

As the Transgabonais network grew over the years, its original terrestrial communications system was no longer able to cover the entire network or meet the increased demands for reliability. The railway management called upon Gabon Telecom, its local provider, to specify and install a new system.
Meeting the need for increased reliability with satellite

Gabon Telecom had already been successfully operating an HNS satellite telephony network to provide telecommunications services throughout rural Gabon for 10 years, and had extensive experience with and confidence in the technology’s performance and reliability. So recommending an HNS satellite solution for the railway’s new network was a logical choice. The solution, a TES system, includes a hub earth station as well as C-band remote terminals.

The TES solution was chosen because it supports simultaneous transmission to several stations in a mesh configuration, it is flexible and easy to install, and its transmission costs are not sensitive to distance or number of installations.

Installation began in late 2003, and the network has been accepted and is operating well. "The HNS satellite solution has already improved both security and the movement of trains throughout the network,” commented Mr. Hervé Ossamy, Administrateur Directeur Général/CEO of Gabon Telecom. “And its flexibility opens the door for possible future services such as messaging and reservations for ticketing.”

Ahmed007, it depends on which countries you want to go to and what kind of life you want to live. Are you more the fuzzy and pampered kind of guy who needs pretty much luxury (sundowners at the pool, trendy shops, air-conditioned buses, five star hotels, savoury pizzas and pastas corners etc.) or do you want to go entirely "local"?

I can tell you for some West and Central Africa countries as far as safety aspect is concerned:

Safety aspect is pretty high (not just by African standards) in countries such as Senegal, Gabon, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mali and The Gambia...but that doesn´t mean that you can fall victim of petty theft in those countries (like purse snatchers for example)

Interest of countries? It is difficult to say which countries are worth visiting because it all depands on what you are interested in? What kind of "traveller"/person you are etc.

Cost aspect? It all depends on what you want to do as a whole....but out of the countries mentioned above: The Gambia and Ghana are the cheapest even in the tourist areas. Ask Sims, he is form The Gambia.:) Senegal and Mali are still reasonably priced, Cape verde and Gabon in particular are the most expensive out of the list mentioned above.

Hope I have helped you a bit:)

Yes Sykprince, Gabon is truly a nice and relaxed but pretty unknown country within Africa. Tourism is still in its infancy....but this will begin to change in the coming years due to the creation of 13 national parks, the huge Libreville Marina and Leisure Centre project, the new big international airport. Fortunately, Gabon has enjoyed peace and stability from independence and it is also a relatively wealthy and prosperous country. In my mind, it is a small lovely tropical gem, a bit "unpolished" but fine!:)

Gabon is an extremly thinly populated country with only 1.3 million people with the size of former Western Germany. (just to give you an idea).

As far as oil production is concerned, Gabon is really not a major oil producer, it only produces 0.3 million barrels of oil a day, compared to Kuwait, for example (which has the same population size like Gabon but produces around 2.4 million barrels a day) Just to give you a clue..

Beaches in Gabon are the best you will find in West and Central Africa (even better than those in Nigeria:lol: ).

Unfortunately, finding up to date images on Libreville is difficult, but I tried my best!

Here are two more threads on Gabon

one showing Port Gentil, Gabon second biggest city (some photos fail to pop up on that thread, however):

the other showing the natural parks of Gabon:

No problem for the pics from Martinique :)

Thank you for your links ! That Port-gentil is really amazing  I could'nt imagine such a tropical paradise there !

The video of Libreville's motorway is interesting, the road seems well maintained. The music is certainly the one of a "suburbian" French black group of rap (the man have the very typical "accent" of such groups :)), but I can't tell you which one it is since there are many.

Hi Sagasu,

Oh yes, I will certainly do it :)

one small correction/hint, the music you here on the Libreville video is not French rap it is Gabonese rap. Gabonese people have a growing list of rap, rnb and even afro-zouk artists. :)

Here are a few artists which are well known

maybe you want to listen to some of their songs if you have time all are great songs:)

I found the Sectaa group very interesting. I don't know if you understand French but the lyrics are nice, they talk about the need for human beings to live together in peace (to sum up) which it's quite uncommon for a rnb group (well, in general it's all about sex and money :ohno: ).

Dantexavier, those pics you added are all taken in 2004 BEFORE the massive ovehaul of roads and highways in Libreville that began last year and is continuing this year, that I have read about in the papers nevertheless thanks for sharing them with us!:) The government is currently spending a lot of money in the modernization of the road infrastructure (around $400 million US dollars are invested this year and next year in road building and modernization which is a good batch of money for a country the size of Gabon).

I will try to find up-to date pictures by visiting various blogs!;)

I really like the presence of "Western feel" observed from many Libreville ( and other African cities ) pics. In my opinion, one of the major characteristics of a great city is the ability to combine both foreign and local values. I have seen failures in many countries I visited ( particularly in Far East and some parts of Europe ) where almost everything ( technology, music, food, TV programmes etc ) is too local ( or just stuff imported from the same continent) and I really feel like being an alien.

I really admire many African and Middle Eastern countries for this :okay:

Abdoulaye, I am happy that you help to collect pictures but some of your pictures are double posts! they have already been posted.

Moreover, please try to look for RECENT pictures, too.

At least this is what I am doing and what we have done so far.

Can I ask you something: Are you from Gabon?:)

Just a very funky night club/disco in Libreville.

this disco is fantatstic:banana:, it has large TV screens placed on various segments, the place seems to have two two floors at least if I am not mistaken...and the equipment is state-of-the art..it could be ANY trendy spacious disco in Europe..the place is packed, wooowww...make sure that you put on your boxes while watching this revealing short video

i am also surprised that Libreville is relatively unknown even in Africa. Its quite well developed and clean compared to many African cities and deserves more publicity.

Lagbuja
March 25th, 2008, 06:13 PM
I definately agree, but Western Media doesn't want to publish anything that will make Africans look decent so they can keep their biased, negative stereotypes about the continent.

Oh well, the best way for Africans to prove the media wrong is to keep building and building and eventually they'll have to recognize Africa.

ufookoro
March 25th, 2008, 06:43 PM
There are so many nice things and parts of africa worth mentioning, they just don't. Good new in media circles is no news at all. The most developed parts of the world can stand up tall when the see scenes of abject poverty in africa and parts of South Aisa. All that get seen are hungry children with flies, slums etc. It is down to African to use some of the resources to advertise themselves.

So here we got a typical slum area picture of Libreville!

You do have to hand it them, Gabon slums look a hell of a lot better compared to many other slums on the continent.

Have you seen Kibera in Nairobi?

Attleast the slums here actually have roofs made out of concrete as opposed to tin or cardboard.

Woow, it is nice to see so many different photos from my home country Gabon and from Libreville where I originally come from. Un grand merci à vous tous!

I lived in Libreville till 2005 before I flew to France to complete my studies there. I will go back to my country once I am finish my study. Like many Gabonese students I received a scholarship from our government. The government provides a scholarship to each Gabonese student who wants to complete his studies abroad. Many of us go to France, Senegal, Marocco, Canada and lately also to South Africa.

I am a new member to SSC. I have finally made up my mind to sign up. So hello to everybody:)

Sorry, my English is not so good but I hope that I make myself understand.

Angcamoc, I have just read what you said. Can I ask you where do you come from? Are you from Africa or America?

I please beg you to make differences. Your statistics are not right, please don´t invent anything about my country. The pictures that you have posted show immigrant or market areas.

The pictures what you are showing are not new but old pictures. I was is Libreville during Christmas time together with my girlfriend. She liked it very much and she plans to settle with me there to.

In Gabon there are many European people, especially French or French-speaking people. Many of them live in Gabon for a long time and also have their own small buisiness and have families there.

Gabon is one of the few countries in Africa that has remained stable and fairly rich and where nobody goes to bed hungry. However, constrasts can be sharp between high and middle income areas where mainly Gabonese and white people live and poor ares where mainly our immigrants live.

Yes, Bongo is corrupt - some wish that he leaves office - but he has always kept peace in a country with many ethnic groups, we are really afraid what will happen if he leaves office one day because there is no real alternative to him, that´s what holds him in power. Gabonese are peaceful people, they don´t want war and all this terrible things.

Gabon attracts many immigrants from our poorer neigbour countries. (almost 40% of our population come from countries such as Cameroon, Congo, Nigeria, Mali, Benin, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Togo etc.) However, although there are many hard-working people, many of our immigrants come to Gabon to steal or work illegally and many West African people send their children to work as housemaids. This is terrible and HAS TO STOP, that is why we don´t like them too much, in general. We want educated immigrants and not thieves or those that want to ruin our small country. This is harming our country, please nobody should misunderstand me now.

In the last couple of years, many new projects are currently under construction on Libreville (I telephone with my brother two days ago who is in Libreville) and other parts of the country. LBV has changed to better. our new partners are now China, like in the rest of Africa, too, Brazil, South Africa and people from Arabia.

I hope that I have gave you some introduction into my country.:)

PS: Please excuse my bad and simple English.

PS: I plan to return to Gabon at the end of the year and I promise to take many pictures for all of you which will give you a good and better insight into my country than what I have seen here.

and to how many places have you been so far and where do you belong to? America? Amazaonia in cameroon (that place that holds 30% of the world´s oil which just says a lot of how factual you really are), Angola, ..or are you just a lunatic broken free from an American assylum? LOL

..,and the picture with hotel is NOT hotel but taken in a residential area, you should learn to read properly!

and if you continue with your political debate and I will ruin the threads that you created in a matter of a few minutes!

So back off!!! This is my last warning!

THIS IS MERELY SHOWING NEW PICTURES AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT!!

Tres belle ville, tres beau pays!
Libreville is wonderful, capital of an extreemily beautiful country. They should market more Gabon, bacause it has almost all the potentials to be one of Africa's top touritic destination.
No seriously, I knew Gabon was quit prosperous but I didn't expect those sights.

Very famous French singer called "Jenifer" gave a big concert in Libreville. People like her in Gabon.... Moreover, she has lived for several years in Gabon and has family members who live in Gabon.

How many buildings in the Gulf bear the names of kings or sultans or look at Asian countries?

How many buildings in France bear the name of General de Gaulles? He is still the most cherished political post-war figure by French people...look at Sarkozy who was democratically elected, his ratings are at an all time low. (just a mere two years after election!)

The most important is that hospitals, universities, schools and the like get built and if they all bear the name of a person, really I couldn´t care less as long as they provide good service.

Can we please keep this thread apolitical, once and for all, PLEASE!!! It is a picture thread. Thank you:master::master:

it is not irrelavant for a dveloping country, why should Africa only always receive shit? trash car that the west doesn´t use, are we sub-humans or what?

I also highly applaud all the mega towers that are built in asia and I hope they even get more and higher, "smile with the West" (if you know what I mean) is the best weapon to defeat them, in the long term! Asians have perfectly undertsood the game, Africans not, unfortunately.

No, I was just saying that some of the more inland parts of the city of Libreville are less well off then what was shown in the pictures.

I have been to Gabon, hence my interest for the country.

Yes, you are right that people on the outskirts are less well-off but still Gabonese squatters are way better than what you find in Lagos, Nairobi, Jo´Burg etc.

Gabonese poor people get free electricity, and medicine is entirely paid by the government.

Between 35-40% (depending on the sources) of entire Gabonese population consists of foreigners. That´s a huge amount for any society to bear. Real Gabonese people don´t make up more than 800 000 people.

Moreover, there are thoudsands of new social housing u/c...joint ventures between India - Gabon, Italy - Gabon and Canada - Gabon. You should have read the news that I upload every once in a while.:)

And whoever takes up Bongo´s reign, you will witness a new era dawning.

The model that Bongo installed (every second Gabonese worked for the government which led to Africa´s most bloated public sector!!), is not sustainable and has been scaled down the past years. The younger Gabonese people are different from "Papa Bongo´s" generation! More willing to create their own business and less government-dependent...there are a couple of good internet journals where you will see it.

Some on Libreville´s restaurants

Libreville has a broad array of good to very good restaurants, some have won international prizes (due to Jeune afrique magazine)

you get everything from French haute cuisine, French wine cellars with area for "dégustation", Lebanese restaurants from cheap to luxurious, piano bar with tea and biscuits, Japanese sushi, Chinese, Korean, various African restaurants from cheap to stylish, road side maquis area. Many are beautifully decorated with a lot of attention to detail.

I have collected a few but the list is not extensive, of course!!

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181497600-Balibar1.jpg

L'Endroit

café and bar

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181512361-lendroit.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181488281-Deauville.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181488086-Chasse_Spleen.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181487362-Phare_du_Large.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181487137-Bateau_Ivre.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181486994-Marquisat.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181486852-Epicurien.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181484620-Ikasa.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181484207-Flibustier.jpg

Cuisine traditionnelle française “de terroir”

© Camille Monville

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181482905-Voilier.jpg

!

Restaurant japonais au décor très moderne. Un must à Libreville !

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181483308-Sakura.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181392834-Nautilus.jpg

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1181511875-Birdisbar.jpg

On s’y croirait vraiment.

a place for snobs:ohno:

Restaurant only for Gabonese cusine:cheers:

very nice restaurant:cheers:

Le Petit Chalut

http://gaboneco.com/Pics/Actualite/1183950307-Petit-Chalut.jpg

That is a lie because Le Gabon is a black country with less than 1% of the population being foreigners and are mostly expatriates.

Go there , you will see the difference. Senegalese, Malians, are easier to tell by looking at their physical apparence, clothing, food, and how they talk(accent.)

But Gabonese are the same as Equatorial Guinee, South Cameroun, Congos (Same culture, ethnic, apparence , clothing etc...)

I loved the pics, beautiful city. It seems that while the rest of the world is in a slump, Africa is rapidly on the rise! Much evidence in Nigeria, Angola, Tanzania, Botswana, and here in the Central African country of Gabon!
