JAB323 August 18th, 2006, 02:30 AM So what's the dea lately with golf down there. This is pretty much what I know, Gary Player, Retief Goosen, and Ernie Els. I know there are plenty of courses and country clubs, but there hasn't been a major PGA Tourney since the Presidents Cup at Fancourt in George, backin '03 I believe. Are any big tournaments scheduled? What's the latest?
JAB323 August 18th, 2006, 02:33 AM ^^ Oh wait, I can't forget 'ol Papwa Sewgolum, he has a truly inspirational story.
SA BOY August 18th, 2006, 06:20 AM the sunshine tour is part of the european tour so not many americans play it and its mainly the aussies, euros and saffers who play in the SA open and tournies like that.
You muts have heard of the sun city million dollar ?
Durbsboi August 18th, 2006, 08:31 AM ^^Isnt it part of the PGA tour? Tim Clark is another SA golfer thats coming up nicely & Rory Sabatini, we got some good golfers when they are on form, but the main 2 are the Goose & Big Easy.
DCC is upgrading it facilities, not sure whether it would be a PGA grade when complete.
Zimbali is prob the best course in the Durban area, then the rest of the country theres Fancort, & that new one the building in the vaal.
dysan1 August 18th, 2006, 05:20 PM Just for info...After the USA (with 5) South Africa has the second largest number of Golfers in the World's top 20 (4): Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, Tim Clark and Rory Sabatini. Trevor Immelman is in the 30's and Charl Swartzel is one to look at for the future...he's in the 80s.
So not bad for SA...no2 in the world after the USA!

Dude the DCC is the only course in south africa in the worlds top 100 courses...and even though it isnt number one in south africa anymore it is still number one in those rankings for africa. in many people's opinion it is SA's best course.
The other top course in Durban is Beachwood at no.9 in south africa. Zimbali is somewhere in the teens...

2. Are they upgrading the durban country club? it dropped from 70 to 81 in the rankings, upgrades should help the ranking improve if any are planned

Yeah, not bad at all.
JAB323 August 18th, 2006, 08:44 PM Yeah I like Sabbatini, but his PGA profile claims he no longer holds residence in SA. He lives in Texas.
JAB323 August 18th, 2006, 08:46 PM ^^ in fact, Ernie Els is the only one who still lives full time anyways in SA. He's still in Pietersburg.
Rib August 18th, 2006, 09:55 PM Man, you got your facts all messed up... Ernie isn't from Pietersburg, Goosen is. His parents live a few blocks from my family. Ernie lives in Florida I believe, although he has a few houses in SA and in Europe. Same thing with Retief. They all travel all the time. Maybe staying in one place for a few months, but they aren't really 'based' anywhere. All that matters really, is that they have the SA flag behind their names.
But really, Ernie doesn't live here. :) Never did.

Yeah I meant Goosen, but I had another tab open that was about Els. :scouserd:
JAB323 August 19th, 2006, 02:14 AM Although he's not South African (Zimbabwean) Mark McNulty is a great golfer, and should get his recognition here. BTW, what's the 411 on the '06 sunshine tour?
dysan1 August 19th, 2006, 11:30 AM What top professional golfer these days doesnt live in the usa? they all do basically, except for a few on the european tour. All the asians, ozzi's and south africans have to put up base in the usa, for they are there almost all year round.
Sabatini is a prick tho
JAB323 August 19th, 2006, 04:17 PM ^^ That's true I guess.
mike2005 September 1st, 2006, 02:14 PM they all live in the US/UK as they play tournaments there but Retief and Ernie all have houses here and live in SA for part of the year. And SA hosts several major Eurpean PGA tour events each season including the richest golf even in the world at sun city.
dysan1 September 1st, 2006, 03:31 PM ^^ well to be technical, the million dollar (even at $2m now) is no longer the richest evet
mike2005 September 6th, 2006, 06:40 PM oh ok but it must be one of the richest ones?!! I dont like golf that much ( I only play a couple of times a month) but everyone in SA seems to love it
Durbsboi September 7th, 2006, 10:02 AM No the Dubai event is has a bigger prize money
dysan1 September 7th, 2006, 12:31 PM oh ok but it must be one of the richest ones?!! I dont like golf that much ( I only play a couple of times a month) but everyone in SA seems to love it
