Chi-town May 7th, 2003, 08:47 PM Very impressive for such a small city (382,618 city, 2,968,806 metro)
BG918 May 8th, 2003, 01:10 AM Minneapolis is one of my top 10 skylines in the United States. I love the designs of the tallest buildings and beneath those giants there are some great older buildings as well. My aunt and uncle used to live in a condo tower in downtown Minneapolis and when I visited them I got to explore the downtown. I remember a great British restaurant down there, which was unusual to see but very good! Awesome skyline and cool city, not done justice by these pictures. 9.5/10

Well, obviously i am biased, but others agree with me! :) I don'y know why I didn't start this thread long ago, thank you Patrick for doing it! I'm gonna add a few pictures.

I've lived here for two years now, and I can't get enough of the skyline. The "Big Three" are some of my favorite skyscrapers in the country. I wish Minneapolis would get maybe two or three 800-900 footers and a nice 1,000 footer. However, I still love the skyline and it is very dense.

Thunderflip February 4th, 2004, 06:32 PM Wow,those buildings of the first skyline pic are so colorful, they remind me of Berlin's Potzdamer Platz only way taller and bigger.

shibbie June 6th, 2004, 02:37 AM Nice skyline, I'm alittle biased though since i used to live there. I will post a pic i took in 1979 when the only thing of interest was the IDS, Foshay and the old Northwestern National Bank sign and weatherball. Anyone out there remember that Minneapolis icon. I know that bank became Wells Fargo but did they ever salvage that sign. It was so cool. Cannot remember what the colors meant as far as forecasting the weather though. 9.5/10 needs one tall focal point

Mortar & Pestle June 25th, 2004, 09:01 PM I don't wish to taint and tarnish this beautiful thread with non-picture related matters, but I am wondering if Toggie, ArchMadness and the others who live/haved lived in the Twin Cities can offer me some information on city life: culture, entertainment, recreation, weather, attractions to visit if I have a week free before law school begins. What are some practical pointers, sales tax (none on clothing, I hear!), reasonable one- or two-bedroom rents around the campus? Do you know of any good bars, restaurants, discotheques. What is the infrastructure and public transit like? And how expensive are the buses or trains? What big cities are within weekend travel distance??
Any help would be very greatly appreciated!
P.S. - and if there's anything you'd like to know about the Bay Area, I'd be happy to help you. I've been here now for 6 years!

Entertainment? The warehouse district in downtown mpls is pretty fun. There are a bunch of bars and clubs in the mall of america in bloomington too. In December, you'll be able to take the light rail train from the warehouse district in downtown all the way to the mall of america. Dinkytown by the U of M is where a lot of the college kids hang out.
The bus system is actually pretty good. The rush hour fares are $1.75 local and $2.50 express, all other times are $1.25 local and $1.75 express. It's the same for the light rail. If you stay in downtown mpls, it's 50 cents. Right now, the light rail only goes from downtown to fort snelling, but in december, you'll be able to take it to the airport and the mall of america.
Don't know much about rents. Sorry.
A big city weekend trip? About the only places I think worth driving to would be Chicago or Duluth. Chicago is about 5-6 hours away and Duluth is about 3 hours. Duluth isn't really a big city, but it's cool because it's on Lake Superior. It's like the ocean in the middle of Minnesota.

No problem. I live in Hopkins, which is a western suburb of Minneapolis. I happen to live on the eastern side of Hopkins, so I'm not far at all from Minneapolis city limits. I can ride my bike there in 15 minutes. I can also see the skyline out of my apartment window.
Jules July 20th, 2004, 01:57 AM Very nice. I love the skyline. 9.0.
Mortar & Pestle July 21st, 2004, 01:37 AM Perhaps we could arrange for an SCITY meet-up when I'm out there in early September. We can perhaps take a tour of the downtown and admire the beautiful skyscrapers.

Yes they did salvage the old sign and weatherball. They stood at the State Fair for a few years. I do not know what its final fate ever was. I probably don't want to know either. But I do know the old jingle.
"When the Weatherball is glowing red
warmer weather is just ahead.
When the Weatherball is shining white
colder weather is in sight.
When the Weatherball is wearing green
no weather changes are forseen.
Colors blinking by night and day
say precipitation's on the way."
I love the skyline but it needs a 900-1000 footer and it also needs a tall tower or two that has a spire to help break up the flat roofs.

The anti-cheesehead August 5th, 2004, 12:19 AM Geez, I haven't even voted for my own city.
I'd have to give it an 8.5.
I know it's no New York or Chicago, but I'm surprised by the amount of votes for 3 or less and the amount of votes for 10. Minneapolis's skyline seems to be quite polarizing. I wouldn't give Minneapolis a 10, but at the same time, I wouldn't be giving it a 3 or less either. I wouldn't even give Des Moines a 3 or less.
Toggie August 8th, 2004, 04:53 AM people vote 3 or less to bring down other cities on the rankings.

EdinaGuy September 5th, 2004, 08:38 PM For a city of under 400,000 has a pretty impressive skyline. I like how the downtown is compact, within walking distance. A few more talls and it'll be a 10. For now, 9.5.

Mortar & Pestle September 12th, 2004, 05:36 AM ArchMadness...thanks for the welcome. This city is amazing!! A beautiful skyline, but also one of the best downtowns I've ever walked around in...clean, quaint, accessible and quite pleasant. A downtown that is warm and welcoming, rather than cold, boxy and artificial. Where the buildings, structures, streets and skyways lend meaning and energy to the cityscape, rather than a sense of urban loneliness, lack of humanity or unfettered capitalism. I am truly impressed by this place, and am very glad to call it home.
Law school is intense, so I will not be here often, but I will get around to posting some pictures of the city as soon as possible.

Did you know where those new houses in the pic used to be public housing projects that Minneapolis tore down?
twincities03 December 23rd, 2004, 01:27 AM LOL!! 41 people have given the skyline 3 or less?
Let me guess who these people might be. Chances are they fit into one or a combination of the following categories:
The person(s)
a) is/are extremely jealous of MPLS.
b) know(s) very little about architecture (MPLS. has been voted as one of the most admired cities in N.A. for its architecture)
c) reside(s) in the southeast part of the U.S.
d) has registered under numerous usernames
d) is/are really stupid.

That's the IDS tower, it's pretty old. It was built in the early 70s believe it or not.

MVBergy24 June 18th, 2005, 07:27 PM very nice skyline. The second best in the midwest. The IDS is one of the best glass towers in the US. The wells fargo center and the 225 south sixth are some of the best modern skyscrappers in the country. The Caryle and the Nicollet should look great when completed :)

jevinmke July 3rd, 2005, 08:25 PM For me, the most impressive thing about Mpls is the skywalks, not the skyline. Generally, it's ok...not too dense and not too spread out. But except for the circular building that looks like it has a catwalk around the roof, none of the buildings have any distinction. The tall brown one looks like it was plucked right out of Manhattan. IDS looked cutting edge at the time it was built, now it just looks oppressive.
Mpls has the worst winter climate of any large American city. Spend any amount of time there in winter and you'll be eternally grateful for those skywalks.
6 out of 10.

Well, for me, the most impressive thing about Mpls is both skywalks and skyline there. Absolutely, it's awesome... not too dense and not too sparse... The tall brown one looks amazing... I love it!
Those skywalks? yeah I love those skywalks, you can see snows on the street while your body is warm. I am from Winnipeg, and I see how those skywalks work in cold winter and also in beautifull springtime. They are much impressive than NYC. Mpls is underrated!
Worst climate? That means we can enjoy snow during the winter, anyway I do love the snow in winter and the warm in summer here in Mpls.

MplsTodd August 25th, 2005, 11:51 PM 9 OUT OF 10
I work in dwtn Mpls and enjoy the skyline from a wide variety of angles. The only thing limiting our skyline (and why I don't give it a 9.5 or 10) is due to the plain-ness of the Int. Multifoods Tower (now called 33 S. 6th)--a very plain 52 story bldg (4th tallest in the city), and the backside of the Thrivent Building -- a 17-story building on the east edge of dwtn with a virtual blank windowless wall running up its east side. It looks ok on the west side however.
It'll be interesting to see the impact of the Carlyle and other proposed condo towers on the skyline

Avian001 August 30th, 2005, 07:32 PM If Minneapolis is a 9.5 or 10 of 10 then what are Chicago and NY?
Lets be honest people.
10/10 for both. But skylines can be admired "relative" to the city, it's attitude and it's population. To me, Minneapolis is 9.5 or 10 relative to the spirit of the city itself. It is actually a somewhat planned skyline. The city works to keep it dense and vertical, having learned the lessons of disastrous urban renewal in the 1960's.
AMJ September 12th, 2005, 10:04 PM In my opinion the skyline will get even better with the addition of The Nicollet.
When viewed from the South and East it will balance out the left side of the view and also bring the Target building more into promenance (with it's awesome lighting effects on top).
Also, it's going to be a great looking building.
Also, The Carlyle will help frame the North and West side, and maybe take some attention away from 33 South Sixth, which I really don't like.

Köbtke October 23rd, 2005, 11:55 AM Minneapolis is the city (along with Seattle) in the US, that I most want to go to, of the ones I haven't been to.
Its skyline show why the US own at skylines. Asia builds really tall buildings, but bar huge cities like HK, their skylines are never - in my opinion - as beautiful as for instance Minneapolis and Seattles.
9.5 - perfectly balanced, beautiful buildings, great city.

9/10
UMD December 30th, 2005, 12:32 PM The problem with Minneapolis is that the skyline has not changed for the last 14 years since the First Bank Tower was built (now I believe the name has changed). The skyline, especially viewed from Washington Ave at the UofM, has always been spectacular. I used to sit on the plaza of Coffman Union just to enjoy the skyline at dusk. I would have given it 10 but I have to settle for 8.5 now due to lack of new addition to the overall skyline - the IDS and the old Norwest Bank Tower (now I believe the name has changed) have always been so classic to look at. By the way, what is this new Nicollet building?
UMD December 30th, 2005, 12:43 PM http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a197/MVBergy24/MINNEAPOLIS.jpg
Thank you so much for this picture, MVBergy24.... I can see the University Hospital that I used to work in and possibly the roof of Territorial Hall that I used to live during my last year as a student there at the UofM. I guess this picture must have been taken from one of the new row of student apartments at the end of Washington Ave. I just never know that Metrodome can look so close from this angle.
By the way, can anyone post the Weisman Museum on this thread as well? I have to tell you that I have been back to Minneapolis for the last 5 years and I have been impressed with the way the University is changing itself now. There are now a lot of nice new buildings on campus.
:)
Somnifor December 30th, 2005, 12:47 PM There is a picture on the last page of the Minneapolis developement thread in the Midwest subforum. It is a condo tower that will be the 5th tallest building in the city. Consruction is supposed to start next year. It has an arc through the whole of the building that will be lit up and should be pretty kick ass. It looks very Minneapolis.
It is planned for the lower Nicollet Mall at 9th or 10th st or so, next to WCCO.
Somnifor December 30th, 2005, 12:57 PM Also the sea of parking lots on the edges of downtown are quickly being converted into neighborhoods of 4-8 story condos with retail on the ground floors. Downtown Minneapolis is beginning a paradigm shift.
Sinjin P. December 31st, 2005, 09:48 AM 7.5/10 Quite impressive.

Happy New Year to you all.
Somnifor January 3rd, 2006, 10:31 AM Cool.....Let's get those built. Will they eventually remove the dome as well?
Happy New Year to you all.Removing the dome would require building new homes for the Twins, Vikings and U of M football. There are plenty of proposals as per usual but none of them have passed. I am not a big fan of spending public money for professional sport franchises but it has gotten to the point where the redevelopement potential of the dome site and it's surrounding neighborhoods may outweigh the costs of building new stadiums. The dome is a cancer for that side of downtown. I think we are getting to the point where the sooner the dome is torn down and replaced by a vibrant downtown neighborhood the better off everyone will be. The redevelopement of the Metrodome site may be the best and only good reason for the public to help build new stadia for the Twins and Vikings. The property tax revenues from turning that into the new side of downtown may actually be the best reason to make the stadium thing happen.

Actually the photo was taken from the Witch's Hat water tower in Prospect Park. I know because I took it.

MrTLH January 22nd, 2006, 06:45 PM I can't possibly understand the numerous low score votes for this City's skyline. It is very nice and well put together.

UMD February 19th, 2006, 12:14 PM I don't know why UMD thinks no buildings have been built in 14 years. We've had 4 30 story buildings built in the past 4 years.
Maybe they don't stand out compared to the few tallests in the city. I could be wrong. When I was back there a year and a half ago, I believe I did notice a Le Meridien Hotel or some sort on Hennepin Ave or just behind the Target Center. Could that be one of the 4? Anyway, I have to tell you how I like the city has tidied up the downtown area around the Hennepin Ave.
Mplsuptown February 19th, 2006, 04:47 PM The Le Meridien (which is now called something else) actually wasn't one of the 4. Though it also is new I don't think it really added anything to the skyline. It's barely noticeable. The 4 I'm referring to are the Target HQ, Ameriprise HQ, US Bank HQ and what I refer to as the Lawyer Bldg, can't think of the name off hand. You might as well add the hotel and Grant condo bldg. You could also add the Ameriprise Customer Service Bldg which is something like 15 stories and the Metro apartment building and you could say that there has been quite a lot of growth to the skyline.
Taller, Better February 19th, 2006, 05:10 PM The skyline is coming along nicely!
Thanks for the pix...

That's OK, don't know of any skylines that are 'perfect'. Who know's maybe even Toronto might be perfect someday.

Yea, it's called the Sculpture Garden at the renowned Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
Æsahættr April 24th, 2006, 05:02 AM Those ghetto apartments that look like they are too tall for their own structural integrity bother me. (The brown ones with the wierd multi-colored panels)
(I'm not sure if they're actually ghetto or not, but w/e)

These? The Crack Stacks? LMAO have you been to Minneapolis? I went to the U of MN and we always joke around about those buildings. They were supposed to be really nice back in the 1970's but now have turned into something of a joke.

Yes, those ones. :) When I go on 35W or 94... wow it bothers me. It ruins the backdrop of the anti-septic glassy skyscrapers further into Minneapolis. Do ghetto people live in them? "Crack stacks", heh.
Oh, and I go to Minneapolis just about once every two weeks.
