Morocco is inhabited mostly by Arabs along with Berbers and other minorities. Its music is predominantly Arab, but Andalusian and other imported influences have had a major effect on the country's musical character. Rock-influenced chaabi bands are widespread, as is trance music with historical origins in Muslim music.

In the Middle Ages, The Rif was the home of the Kingdom of Nekor. In the 20th century, under the leadership of Abd el-Krim El-Khattabi, the Moroccan guerrilla leader, it struggled against Spanish rule and aimed to free Morocco from French colonization too.

Al Ala Music
A Living remnant of the brilliant Spanish-Maghreban civilisation, the Andalusi music of Morocco perpetuates the âla, a broad repertory of songs and instrumental music which Moroccans have jealously preserved thanks to a strong oral tradition.

Gnawa Music
They are generally the descendants of former slaves originating from Black Africa. Gnaoua, who constituted themselves as brotherhoods through Morocco, are Masters musicians, players of crotales, conspicuous women, mediums and followers. They practise a syncretic rite of possession, where interfere at the same time African and arabo-Berber contributions, during which followers devote themselves to the practice of the dances of possession and trance. This rite of possession, that they indicate by the term of " derdeba ", proceeds during the night. It is animated by a Master musician accompanied by his troop, by a conspicuous affiliated with the brotherhood of the gnaoua and her assistants. This night ceremony comprises a profane part intended for the entertainment during which there is no trance and a sacred part during which saints and supernatural entities are called upon (mlouk). The instruments used during these ritual ceremonies are a lute drum with low register (guembri) and crotales (qraqech). The drums are used, at Gnaoua townsmen, only during the procession which precedes the rite of possession. The Gnaoua term is a generic term which includes the stimulating members of the brotherhood like the Masters musicians (maâlem), the players of crotales (qraqeb), the conspicuous-therapeutists (tallaâte and chouwafate) and the followers affiliated to the brotherhood.

Soufi Music
Sufi brotherhoods (tarikas) are common in Morocco, and music is an integral part of their spiritual tradition, in contrast to most other forms of Islam, which do not use music. This music is an attempt at reaching a trance state which inspires mystical ecstasy. The brothers hold hands in a circle and chant or dance. Sufi music is usually without rhythm.

I live in Los Angeles, and although I'm not Moroccan, I'm a big fan of Moroccan music. I don't understand the lyrics but I still like the music.
I lived in Agadir for a year, where I listened to classical Arabic, Andalousi, chaâbi, raï, pop.
There's great music on this thread and good music tips. I really enjoyed the Nass el-Ghiwane clip, good one!
I hope it's OK for me to post some of the Moroccan music I've found and like:
zBdZRaCkXXg
Hajja Hamdaouia: Mline Ana (1970): what a voice, what a life.
niekQY7WByw
Said Oughassal: This is some nice gnaoua.
WH714_0kNeI
Hamid Bouchnak and Cheba Maria: It doesn't get much better than that!
BvBBtLpqZ7E
Kamel El Âbdi: Chaâbi raksaa, great dancing!
OXcQYBTZNwI
Samira Said: Kollena Ensan, the anthem of lthe Coupe d'Afrique, 2006.
Sl595v_8me8
Marhabahia: The best percussionists from Essaouira and Bahia (Brasil) playing together in Morocco.
TkobUqrUniU
Fnaïre: Yed El Henna, this is my favorite so far by Fnaïre.
K3hWnwjaIMA
Cheb Rayan and Rima: Dana Dana, two great voices together.
91bgD36sKpk
Marstyle: Rap du Bled, I know not everyone likes rap, but this guy is good, I just wish I knew what he was saying!
Hope you guys like some of these clips.
I'll definitely be back on this thread to get some more music tips...

Thank you very much GatoNegro!
What's your background if you don't mind me asking? (you said you lived in LA but I don't know whether you're American.) And how did you decide to live in Agadir? And how was your experience?
It's just interesting to know what Morocco looks like from a foreigner's perspective.
GatoNegro

MoroccanChica: I'm Californian, but my family is from Peru. I had been living in Spain, working as a teacher, and every time I had a chance I would go to Morocco (I've been everywhere from Oujda to Laayoune, except Tangiers!) until finally some Moroccan friends of mine in Agadir told me I should just move there since I liked Morocco so much. It was one of the best years of my life. I've forgotten much of my Darija, but Maroc was where I was able to really improve my French. Because of my dark looks, most Moroccans thought I was Soussi (especially when I wore my djellabas) and sometimes they wouldn't even believe me when I told them I wasn't Moroccan! I still have some good friends in Morocco and try to be constantly reading about what is going on the country, although I haven't been there in a while. Maybe it's time for a visit?

GatoNegro
November 6th, 2007, 04:14 AM
Uhmmm...my darija was just OK, I lived with some Moroccan friends who seemed to have a nightly party, so I picked up a bit but not enough to consider myself fluent, although I threw in a little classical Arabic now and then. Mostly it was French.
But, what I want to know is where's the other great Moroccan music on this thread ehhh? :)

Marocboy has translate some of the song :
come to my my darling, dont let me wait so lang, i want your love, my hart is burning......
hob nam= your love
Your love is nice my heart and your heart.
The woman sings about the love of the man for her and the man sings about the love of the woman for her how beautiful and
nice it is. And that the man has a good heart. And that their hart are one...

^^ it's just an amateur song & video from a singer without a label.
The singer also is more of a violinist than a singer. & the song is not represnting its self as the CAN "official" song  it's just an amateur tryout within an amateur framework.
I think such initiatives should be encouraged rather than ridiculed. :P

For those of us who are not Moroccan, who don't speak or understand much darija or less arbiyaa, we tend to be attracted to the rich rhythms and powerful vocals of chaâbi, yet because we don't understand the lyrics, we're a bit clueless. OK. I understand that so far.
But, what I have read in this thread is that chaâbi is really disliked by most Moroccans on this forum.
So my question is: is chaâbi really that bad? What makes it bad? Why do people, like the ones on this forum, find it so offensive?
I know it has to do with the lyrics.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

the first song is one of the best of Dahman Elharachi, the master of Chaabi Algerio. many of his songs have been singed by many singers in many languages like Ya Rayeh.
]dHLalGaQiSs[/
The Same for Dada Hyani by mazagane it is for Dahaman with some changes to lyrics>
http://www.douniamusic.com/Artiste/Dahmane-el-harrachi.php
The Video (Ya labas) is from Cheb hasni (I like the original one first) coz this Moroccan group adds to it an intro from one of Amazigh Kateb's songs.
This is Cheb Hasni one original and nice:
