Its very impressive considering they had to do alot of rebuilding after the wars ended in 1986. Kampala's skyline literally sprouted in the late nineties when the country was (and still is) experiencing robust economic growth. But I guess it will see phenominal growth in its skyline in the coming months. About four new hotels are under construction in the city centre with some being more than 20 storeys high. This is to cater for the coming commonwealth heads of government meeting (CHOGM) this year.

The city is also currently undergoing a major road upgrade with a new by-pass highway being built.

Uganda has been hailed as one of Africas success stories. They were among the continents poorest people a few decades ago but have risen up from the ashes of war. Now that the country has discovered oil deposits, its only a matter of time before it gives some African powerhouses a run for their money.

Yep! its a pedestrian tunnel. Though Ive never actually seen anyone use it.
The Stanbic tower's real name is the Crested Towers- It was built to resemble the crested crane bird (Uganda's national symbol).

I have to agree. Kampala is one of the best cities to live in E.Africa. I just love the city, especially the community feel it has and lots of entertainment venues.

oh... nice city... liking a lot the blue tall builing... and also it's quite interesting how diverse Kampala is regarding religious issues...so a mosque, a statue of catholic virgin Mary and an hindouist temple in the same city is not that common in catholic Latin America... liking a lot the skyline, not that tall but dense... don't liking at all crowded bus station... (i guess)... the hotel at the end is just terrific.

Kampala is quite diverse. Plans are underway to build a multistorey central station in kampala for inner city transport and revamp the railway system. Lets just hope its not just talk.:)

Yep! they come in a wide variety of colours which helps to brighten up the occasion. Though this particular dress is most common among the Baganda. Some kingdoms have other varieties of dressing. Ugandans tend to follow their traditional cultures more than most other East Africans (IMO) apart from some like the Maasai.

Theres one thing Kampala is famous for in East Africa. Its where you can find the largest variety of clothes and fashion accessories at very reasonable prices. Kampala has an abundance of strip mini malls lining its streets. They are usually 3-4 storeys with about 40 stalls mostly selling clothes and phones.

Kampala is growing quite fast. but Nairobi is waaay bigger than Kampala. Though some parts do feel like Nairobi especially to the east and the downtown area where there are many towers. Nairobi also has more highways and wider streets and is alot colder than KLA. (Coming to think of it Nairobi weather feels like winter compared to Kampala).

I lived in neighbouring Bukoto near the school for like a year. Tomiwalker, I guess you would like to know the Lincoln school changed its name to Kabira International school and then to its current name-International School of Uganda (If im not mistaken) and they are about to expand it (check the Eastern Africa construction thread).:)

I think you got that wrong Kenguy, Kabira is based in Bukoto and Lincoln is based in Lubowa. If I am correct, the photo refers to the Lubowa site i.e Lincoln. (Of-course I stand to be corrected).

Always good to know these projects make such good memories for the new generation - roll on the times indeed!

I think it is fair to say that there is a new push to have swimming as part of a new sports curicula in all the newly sprouting international schools in Uganda, they all seem to have swimming pools, which was never the case with the old establishement schools that preffered football, basketball and netball (for the fairer sex).

I am looking foward to the next "Eric" the fish at the olympics, this time for the correct reasons!

The flats are in Bugolobi. Bukoto is in the far background where you can spot the club with the green roof.

I thought the government would transfer ownership to speke resort after CHOGM. Anyway, I guess its a profitable venture for them. Thanx.
