Northern Vietnam to build $1.2 bln port complex
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said he supports the ongoing study of a US$1.2 billion deep-water port in northern Quang Ninh province while touring industrial sites in the province Sunday.
Dung said during his visit that Quang Ninh should develop a system of deep water ports, industry, urbanization and services as the northern ports of Hai Phong and Cai Lan are already operating at capacity.
The new deep-water port system is planned to be located at hon Mieu (Mieu Island) in Hai Ha district, as the site provides excellent shelter, and has a mean water depth of about 20 meters.
The future port complex, designed to host 100,000 ton vessels, will include a special-purpose port and a container port to support nearby shipyards, steel rolling factories, a thermal-power plant and a petrochemical refinery.
It is also near the two border gates Mong Cai and Bac Phong Sinh, where trade with neighbor China has been flourishing.
The Vietnamese Government intends to extend the annual capacity of ports in the north to 100 million tons while the key hubs of Hai Phong and Cai Lan could harbor only around 23 million tons.
This project is built to be attached to Mong Cai border Economic Zone,
(Hon Mieu and Hai ha shall become one part of Mongcai City(Mongcai shall be updated to become a city in 2007 or 2008) )
I'm a mongcainese and i'm proud of this project,hehe
