Show the urban road systems running thru your towns!

I've seen some good'uns such as Bangkok with its eleveated roads and Hong Kong where they run thru builings!
Anyone got any pics?

Also Madrid - some massive construction going on there at the moment, infact Spain is motorway mad!

When I was in England 2 years ago, I took a bus from Oxford to London (one of those 6 pound bus rides) and I distinctly remember the bus going on some highway then transferring to another highway in London's suburbs. Instead of the normal North American 'spaghetti junction', this was actually an elevated traffic circle (I believe it was sandwiched between the two highways). It was nighttime so I didn't get that great a look.

Any idea where that may be, and have any pics?

There are plenty like that in London, but I'm guessing your bus took you on the A40 then M40 to Oxford? The traffic circle you speak of may have been Hanger Lane?

Many other big British cities also have the whole 'spaghetti' thing going on too, especially in Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham (Birmingham has the famous Spaghetti Junction).

Oooo yes I googled it and it was where the A40 meets the A320 I believe, right near Hyde Park... the traffic circle was elevated (squashed between two elevated highways) and I thought that was just really awesome... And space saving too!

^ It is a rendering, i forgot to mark that. They're right in the middle of the reconstruction right now - but that's the final project that will be finished in a year or two.

Stockholm's newest expressway - Södra Länken (the Southern Link) - runs mainly through tunnels, and opened October 2004. It's a part of the as of yet incomplete Stockholm Ring Road.

Essingeleden (the Essinge Link) is an island hopping expressway west of the downtown area. It was the first part of the proposed ring road, and opened in the 1960's

Amazing yes... and also expensive!

Any idea of how much it'll cost and where the funding is comming from (municipal/federal/tolls etc)?

Big Dig, anyone? ^^

yako

Yes, Södra Länken was ridiculously expensive, but nowhere near 'the Big Dig', appr. 1 billion USD vs 14.6 billion. We had the advantage of drilling thru bedrock.

I can't find any exact figures for Norra Länken but it seems to be pretty much the same. Funding is something like 30% municipal, 70% federal...

NOTE: Only one of these images is actually mine.

Interstate 15 - runs north-to-south to the west of downtown and straight south through many of the suburbs. These are going northbound.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-151.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-152.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-153.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-154.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-155.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-156.jpg

Interstate 80 - runs west-to-east from the desert, past the airport, briefly merges with I-15 west of downtown, and heads east through the residential eastern neighborhoods into the Wasatch Mountains. These are going westbound. A badly-needed reconstruction for the eastern section is set to begin in 2008, I believe. Over the past year, chunks of concrete have fallen out of 2 bridges, and the road is in horrible condition.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-801.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-80from1700East.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-805.jpg

And as we're leaving the city and entering the desert...
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-806.jpg

Interstate 215 - forms a 3/4 loop through the western neighborhoods into the western surburbs, turning east through the central suburbs, and paralleling the mountains in the eastern suburbs. This is going counter-clockwise.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-2151.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-2152.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-2155.jpg

And as it merges back into I-80:
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e141/bobrulz600/I-2156.jpg

There's also State Route 201, which lies along the border between Salt Lake City and West Valley City on the west side of the city. Very busy, very congested, just got a widening. Can't find any good pictures, though.

I can't find any pics (gotta take some soon), but the Yan'An Expressway in Shanghai is argubly the one that offers the coolest views of any urban expressway on the planet.

Inre Ringvagen is the most famous urban expressway in Malmo, however I don't have any pics of that one either.

The next photo's are from Zwolle, The Netherlands (NL).
This 113.000 inhabitants, middle-sized city is the entrance to the north of the country.
There is only 1 motorway, the A28, which is only 2x2 lanes wide, but handles over 120.000 vehicles a day. Every day, over 100.000 persons commute into the city.

1. The bridge over the river "IJssel". This is just after the interchange with the A50/N50 motorway/National Road. Note the first real "skyscraper" of Zwolle (100m) in the background.
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/7739/ringzwolle2060bl4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

2. Exit Zwolle-Zuid, the first exit from the south.
http://www.roadpics.net/A28/A28N/29.jpg

3. Exit Zwolle-Centrum, the exit to downtown. This 4lane motorway still handles over 110.000 vehicles a day.
http://www.roadpics.net/A28/A28N/30.jpg

4. Now from the North: Exit Zwolle-Noord. (Zwolle-North). The N35 is one of the most congested road in Zwolle. It will be widened from 2x2 to 2x3 lanes, and the speed limit will raise from 50 to 70 by 2010.
That red sign says the extra lane is not opened for traffic. Now, the limit is 100km/h, when the lane is opened the limit is 80km/h, because that lane is not wide enough to support higher speeds.
http://www.roadpics.net/A28/A28Z/29.jpg

5. Exit Zwolle-Centrum (Downtown). From the ONLY 3 exits in Zwolle, this is the less congested one. The sign says Utrecht 89km. For Dutch standards, that's quite far. (only 50 miles).
http://www.roadpics.net/A28/A28Z/30.jpg

6. Exit Zwolle-Zuid (South). This is the last exit in Zwolle. The entire A28 near Zwolle is heavily congested at most times, because its way not wide enough.

I could not find any updated map of traffic, the last official one, is dated in 2004 and says that M-30 carried 311.156 cars/day between Puente Ramon y Cajal and Puente de America (15 lanes now a days between these points), km 4 (this was the part with more cars/day of M-30 in 2004).

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/2412/imaxe037amr5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This camera is located in the A-2 (Puente de America), just over this part of the M-30, sometimes shows A-2 and other times shows M-30:

I found something about the "IMD,intensidad media diaria" (dont know how to call this in english), this means the number of cars a day (24hours) which go through the most crowded point in a freeway or road. So I found that the IMD in 2006 for the M-30 never has been under 400.000 cars/day for the East Side, 200.000 for the West Side and 150.000 for the North Side in a work day.

400.000 vehicles/day? That is extremely much, even more than the busiest stretch of road in LA's I-405 (390.000). :runaway:

torke

I know it is extremely much, in that area M-30 has between 14 and 17 lanes, and I know traffic is completely stopped during rush hours and most part of the working days but 400.000 I think is pretty much, I mean I am sure sometimes has reached that number of cars/day but "never under"... ¿?
I will be searching for this info very seriously, I'll ask for official statistics in the city hall, I really would like to know about it, so I promise more info will be coming soon.

14 lanes - 3 exit lanes = thru 11 lanes.

But the widest part of road, without parallelroads is in Buenos Aires i think.

Mexico City

Mexican expressways are not very special, but because of the traffic, some in Mexico City are double-decker freeways. This is the Periferico expressway. The film "En el hoyo" is about its construction.

Those broad expressways cutting through the cities are ugly! They should transform them into tunnels and place greenery onto them.

Bad idea.

Because, in most countries, trucks with dangerous loads like chemicals, fuel, and other non-healthy products aren't allowed in every tunnel.

So when you tunnel most expressways, that traffic has to drive right trough the city, which is much more dangerous. (relatively, non-motorways have a much higher accident-rate).

Think of what would happen if a chemical-loaded truck get's an accident near a school!

DiggerD21
October 14th, 2006, 01:30 AM
I think that shouldn't be such a problem if the tunnels are cut&cover-style and therefore close under the surface (with more possibilities for ventilation).
There are plans to transform a long stretch of the expressway north of the Elbtunnel into a cut&cover-style tunnel in order to raise the living quality of the neighbourhoods directly affected by the expressway. And the Elbtunnel is one of the heaviest-used tunnels in Germany, with 150.000 vehicles per day, among them a lot of trucks transporting various goods.

ChrisZwolle
October 14th, 2006, 02:03 AM
I don't know how they qualify in Germany to tunnels, but with a certain distance, cut&cover tunnels are qualified as tunnels in The Netherlands, so trucks with dangerous goods are not allowed to use them, and have to take a ferry or bridge to cross a river or waterway. We have various tunnels like that here.

And besides that, it is extremely expensive to reconstruct or widen such a tunnel. So you have to build the right capacity for, say, the next 40 years.
They didn't did that near Amsterdam, with the Coentunnel. They have to construct a second tube, which costs more than a billlion euro's.

But in areas with very large ships (like Rotterdam, Antwerp or Hamburg), you just have to use tunnels, because you don't want a "viaduc de Millau" in flat landscape ;)

So next, the busiest motorway in The Netherlands: The A16 on the eastside of Rotterdam. With over 230.000 vehicles a day, the road is busier than any country near NL.

1. Some miles south of Rotterdam
http://www.roadpics.net/A16/A16N/17.jpg

2. Here starts the road with the most lanes: 18 in total
http://www.roadpics.net/A16/A16N/19.jpg

3. Near Rotterdam-Feijenoord. The lane on the right is a truck-lane.
http://www.roadpics.net/A16/A16N/21.jpg

4. The Van Brienenoordbridge; this is the busiest stretch.
http://www.roadpics.net/A16/A16N/22.jpg

5. Near Rotterdam-Centrum; 14 lanes across

6. End (or better: start) of the A16 which run from Rotterdam to the Belgium border near Breda.

The stacks at the Tollway and Central Expressway are impressive... but sorry, the Central Expressway is in another league altogether and beats it like an unloved stepchild. GBT is just a big new road. The Central Expressway is a bigger, badder mother-of-all-urban-freeways road :-)

Be honest... do you get more of a thrill driving through Plano on GBT, or speeding through the Central Expressway's canyon downtown as it approaches the mixmaster... ~8+ lanes, air columns, cantilevered service road, neatly compartmentalized vegetation, and all?

The Central Expressway is absolutely one of the 5 best stretches of urban freeway in America, and easily one of the 10 best stretches of urban freeway in the world. It's the kind of road people from other states and countries look at, and say, "Damn... why can't we have cool roads like that?" :-)

at most we have one strip that has 3 lanes in each way but most are just 2 lanes each way

some pics anyway

here is an over all look at the major routes

the red ones are ones that are freeways the orange ones are just streets as they do have intersections and traffic lights and can be a pain in the ass to get anywhere

highway 99 - the main route between Vancouver and Seattle - please note this freeway turns into a street once it crosses into Vancouver from Richmond - abruptly too - its like whoah

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d3/Bc-99-rmd.jpg/800px-Bc-99-rmd.jpg

the East-West connector - gets you from Richmond to Delta/south surrey basically - it does have traffic lights on it as there are no freeway interchanges in parts :(

this is the same freeway - on the left - on the right is the lougheed highway - its got traffic lights etc. so its not anything to get you somewhere like an express route

http://www.globalairphotos.com/images/bc/coquitlam/2006/cqh2006_009.jpg

looks like it might be a freeway - but its just an overpass over the "freeway", the one - this is a new interchange recently completed creating much better flow

That is nice...why does Texas have freeways that kick my state's freeway's ass?

Partly, because when the car-hating lefty-greenie types show up in Texas whining lies about the alleged impossibility of building your way out of congestion, Texans laugh at them and make the new road twice as wide as originally planned just to really piss them off and enjoy watching them turn red and sputter with rage. To a large extent, it's worked brilliantly. Texas is the only state in the country where congestion has meaningfully decreased over the past 10 years, despite double-digit population growth. And, to the horror of those same car-hating lefty-greenie types, other states (Florida, for one) have noticed Texas' success.

You know, I actually agree with you in a few points there...

Connecticut has to take some of Texas' ideas on this front...the traffic here is terrible, and is getting worse. And they are saying it could be twice as bad in 2020...

I like that the state is investing in public transport, but they should not neglect their highways in the process.

You're right. Freeways have been resisted in Vancouver because the taxpayers there don't want to pay the high costs of freeway construction, and because they realize that real estate prices for those holding properties close to the centre will be maximized if transportation is made more difficult than in comparable cities. It's really very clever of them. They save money on their property taxes by not building freeways, and then sit back and watch as those properties become ever more expensive. Nice game if you can get it!

And they are able to keep this kind of thing going because they are rich and therefore control the media and the provincial government. In recent years, however, the provincial government has been pressured by other businesses in the transport and manufacturing sectors to expand this very limited freeway system, not by linking any of it's parts into a whole, but just by widening Hwy 1, putting in more crossing capacity at the Port Mann Bridge, and buidling two more semi-freeway arterials, the North and South Fraser Perimeter Road. This project is encountering some opposition from fake environmental groups who are really just propaganda fronts, and are financed by the rich property owners who don't want their racket spoiled.

See this website:

http://www.livableregion.ca/

especially the "Blog" portion:

http://www.livableregion.ca/blog/blogs/index.php

It's a hoot! It's amazing how people who are determined to protect their property prices can hide behind the skirts of the environmental movement and concerns about GHGs and global warning, and get away with!

Katowice is a commieblock heaven, isn't it? The commieblock heaven that has very nice road network :okay:

It's a popular opinion, but it is false. We've got commieblock, but Warsaw, Cracow, Kielce or Wroclaw has got many more. In Katowice is really good commieblock - for example Tauzen District (Osiedle Tysiąclecia). But we have got motherfuckers too - for example Superjednostka in the downtown.

Some photos of the North Circular Road (A406) in London :)

Briefly - it's an expressway, running through the London's northern suburbs. Usually, it has 2 or 3 lanes in each direction, mostly without hard shoulders, but there are few bottlenecks, where it returns to a single carriageway (1x2 / 1x3) road with traffic lights, going through residential areas :bash:

^^ Nice. :) I know Warsaw has no motorways, but it has expressways. Do you know some sites containing pictures of them (as many as possible)? I know there's much stuff in the Polish section, but threads are often without pictures, and there's so many of them.

Yes, in 2007 Warsaw still don't have any kilometer of real motorway (politics, wrong tender documents...). It's sad. We were close to start building the first section of S8 (part of Warsaw Ring), but probably we have to wait few months. :ohno:

I just took those pics from google :)

I agree, 800x600 is enough.

sorry dont know how to do that
Just open Your picture in MS Paint, press ctrl+w, insert new size (as a percentage of old size) into menu, press ok, save the picture.

Then upload picture at imageshack or panoramio or whatever.
And i think imageshack has also tools for resizing pictures.

I'm pretty sure you guys drive on the right hand side of the road because at the time of the decision, you guys saw driving on the right as a 'rebellion tactic' against Great Britain. At that time in your history, you were also siding up to France (Britain's oldest enemy) - who happen to drive on the right. You chose the right hand side to piss off the British :)

A lot of countries drive on the left though, mostly former Commonwealth colonies (Aust, NZ, UK, Ireland, maybe even India) - I'm sure you'll get the chance to experience it sometime in your life :)

A new highway will be built between Transylvania Highway and the town of Dej, crossing through Nokia plant in Jucu. It will have 75 Km, and will cost ~8 milion euros for each Km. I will begin in Gilau, will be linked with Transylvania Highway at Luna Interchange, will saround Cluj-Napoca by South, will pass near Cluj International Airport, and will continue towards Jucu and finaly Dej. The construction will start in April.

Thanks!
GREEN SIGNS mean, highway & highway passing through city urban area and after toll plazas these highways are called expressway (Çevreyolu) Green signed highways in Istanbul are part of TEM (Trans European Motorway) and in Ankara, Izmir and Bursa (cities which located in Asia), I think green signed highways will be connected to TEM in the future.
Ankara - Istanbul highway (Anatolian Highway) has already been connected with TEM.
BLUE SIGNS mean, to show intercity roads / connections which do not have highway standards.
WHITE SIGNS mean, to show urban / metropolitan areas in the city (the city center or suburb for example)

^^ Thanks, but what about the sign for the beginning or the end of motorway? Why is the first one green and the second one blue?

Istanbul is a traffic horrorscene. It's almost always jammed because the metropolitan area of 11 million have only 2 through motorways.

If it's firstly green and second blue; it's the end of highway to national road or exit from highway into national road.
If it's firstly blue and second green; it's the beginnig of highway or entrance to highway from national road.

Unfortunately you're right :(
The higways and expressways in Istanbul are not adequate. Everyday tens of new cars are attending to traffic but we still have 2 transit highways which are connected with Bosphorus bridges.
But I think the goverment is planning 3rd Bosphorus bridge and new expressway now for the north part of city but most of people (including me)
do not support this project because of the risk of pillage of environment.

By the way, our metropolitan cities have population;
Istanbul : 12 573 836 est. 2007
Ankara : 4 466 756 est. 2007
Izmir : 3 739 353 est. 2007
Bursa : 2 439 876 est. 2007

Traffic jams are bad for the environment too, but Istanbul needs more of a world mass transit rather than cover the whole city with LA style motorway network.

Istanbul has a very small metronetwork for it's size. Only one real subway line, the rest is light rail or suburban rail.
