Awesome news...another rather high rise for Durban. Good find!

since u put up the small version i thought i should post the large image version...not the most architecturally stimulating development, but will fill the beach skyline more.

reading into this it seems they haver the development rights but want an investor to undertake it. This is more of a very slim possibilty of proceeding . It is added as proposed for now

This is sooo cool. We still have timeshare in this building! Our flat is on the first floor, because mom is afraid of elevators. I was always sooo jealous of those living higher up. Glad to see they are going to spruce up the old lady a bit.

Well i hope they do do it tho, cos more density is always great!

This is great news! I hope this comes through. It will really add to the beachfront skyline. Will also add some density as it's close to the highrise coming up right behind the Holiday Inn (South Beach) and the Wheel.

its being built on top of the existing Durban Spa building

I hope Mt Blanc goes back to being painted white. Looks cleaner and more sophisticated. I'm not a fan of it's current pinkish colour.

dysan1
August 23rd, 2006, 12:31 AM
i agree!! i think it looks terribly tacky! Then again i imagine it is terribly hard to keep those buildings looking crisp and clean if they are painted white, for the sea air must wreck havoc on them!

Jakes1
August 23rd, 2006, 10:40 AM
but how incredibly stupid to name a building white mountain (mont blanc) and then decide to paint it pink? I never liked it. Tall, garish and one gets the eerie feeling that it might tip over.

Sorry, but this building will be butt ugly. Too boxy. Where's the sense of fun?

dysan1
August 23rd, 2006, 01:28 PM
^^ i agree...but from the looks of things it has to match the existing 14F...then again why dont they redo the whole block to be modern and fresh? would leave a far better impression and modernise that end of the beach!

Jakes1
August 23rd, 2006, 01:34 PM
it is an ugly building, but so are those surrounding it. the mont blanc is my least fav high-rise. ah, but I had good times in the spa. Very 80's, you can visit the website and look for yourself. but good times none the less.

dysan1
August 23rd, 2006, 01:39 PM
I actually like mont blanc. i think it has alot style, but the pink at present doesnt show that off...

hmmm...i can only imagine what u did... :)

I remember that my brother always told me mont blanc was leaning over to our side - due to bad construction. I was always wondering when it would just fall over. Guess my impressions of mont blanc was formed by my older brother. To me durban was just the most magical place. The wheel, mini-town, the beach... Christmas lights!

SA BOY
August 23rd, 2006, 04:22 PM
we should show mt blanc the respect she deserves as she has been durbans 2nd tallest and the building with the most floor in durban for over 20 years

romanSA
August 23rd, 2006, 04:39 PM
I agree. It's a Durbs landmark that appears on almost every postcard of the beachfront.

All hail Her Royal Majesty, Mt Blanc!

My only request is that they change it back to white.

I am surprised by the response regarding this development in Durban. This is really a prime site which will be interesting as it will be on top of a timeshare block that was built in the 1980's. I hope the project goes ahead as planned.

romanSA
August 23rd, 2006, 05:31 PM
I hope so too.

I think people generally support the development but would prefer a revised design.

dysan1
August 23rd, 2006, 09:18 PM
yes i do support the development, esp since it is in the dodgy part of the beach, but yeh the style is my only gripe! But then again, its the same as the rest of the building

Hey we had a flat @ Mt Blanc, its the only place in Durbs I could get a head rush by taking the lift from the ground floor till level 34!!!

I agree that it's ugly, but what else will be built in what Dysan accurately called the 'dodgy part of the beach'? Beggars can't be choosers, and (speaking as a former short-term Mont Blanc resident from 1990) that area's definitely a beggar!

I actually don't think it looks too bad. It'll blend in so at least it's not an eyesore. In the pics it looks kinda small for 28F.

dysan1
September 1st, 2006, 03:27 PM
yeh it does...but its next to the 40F mont blanc, so that will make it look small. put it next to something its own size to compare i think. And its not terrible, it blends with its existing structure

Durbsboi
September 4th, 2006, 08:43 AM
yeh, it would look kinda odd if you have this old building @ the bottom with a super cool structure on top of it. Hey the sardines are beaching in this area, lol, can imagine the sale ad's for this one " watch the sardine frenzy from the comfort of your home"

I stayed in durban spa this week, we have had timeshare there since 1989. It is the first time in ten years that I have been there. The entire building is getting a revamp - but I don't think this will mean more floors being added. That part of south beach looks better than I expected. It seems even the grotty wheel is getting a makeover. Mt blanc looks just as intimidating as always. We stay on the first floor - we have a unit here because my mom is terrified of lifts... expected more noise, but we had a great time. Durban Spa is like a late-1980's time warp. But it is clean, everything is immaculate within the building. And we a had a lot of fun watching a new bollywood channel - ZTV.

Lmao, I cancelled Z-tv, my mum hardly watches it & it was pissing me off.

Did you watch that one soapie? They do these insane slow motion sequences. No-one talks for minutes. One character would say: "you are but an ugly whore." For the next five minutes they zoom in and out. replay the statement. they make swoosh sounds as the camera pans over everyone's shocked faces three times. It is so funny!

Z-TV, the only one better is that new nigerian movie channel on dstv. nollywood can also be entertaining.

They deploy security guards every day at sundown. the beach is clean, and the paving was replaced by grass in many areas after the high tide damage. After sundown it is still dodgy - but this is the feeling I get throughout - even at north beach. 3 tourists were mugged on the beachfront while we were there, and they told us not to walk around after sunset. The street running past the wheel and the four seasons, right behind the parade, is extremely dodgy. prostitutes, drug dealers and general grime. but it does look better than october last year.

Gillespie Street has been dodgy for years, if not decades. Hopefully the People Mover route will help change that.

I'm sure you also have a division in Durbs municipality that specifically deals with cleaning and beutifying the CBD, its BEST to lodge a complain with them so that they take action. I must say that Pickitup in Jozi is doing a great Job, we just log calls with them and they phone you back and take action. I once complained about filth at Cnr West and Anderson street and within days they came back to me and up until now the area is being kept clean.

I think you Durbs SSC members need to log calls with your departments as cleanliness makes the city lookable.

Has anything happened on the hotel expansion or is the tower block a "Never Built"?
