ZOHAR August 23rd, 2006, 12:46 AM great pics!
your pics and thread are always great!
u posting pics of unfamous cities!
StormShadow August 23rd, 2006, 01:08 AM Thanks, Zohar!
I create picture threads of cities in particular regions that I feel if needs some attention on this forum of ours. The cities may be in development and of course some slower than others or a bit weathered, I think it's still worth to post and see. Having variation is great. :okay:

Agreed. The entire country seems to have changed for the better after the genocide. No one would have thought it would ammount to anything after that catastrophe. I guess the main person to thank is their progressive president Paul Kagame.

If Kigali in particular, and African cities in general, had proper sidewalks it would do wonders to improve the aesethics of the place.

Actually, Kigali does have plenty of sidewalks. At least more than most African cities I've been to. I'll try upload some pics of the city's recently constructed roads infrastructure that I took a couple of weeks ago on my last visit.

It's the media.. and always the media !
Cities in sub-Saharan Africa in general are very colourful ( they have the right colour scheme for buildings ) and new buildings in general are huge, well-maintained, and separated by wide streets unlike what we find in cities in some major Far East countries ( the same monotone-coloured structures, and they are built very close to each other etc. ) .
Well everybody has their own taste but I'm a huge fan of the lay-outs and exciting "modern-meets-traditional" feel of cities n towns in sub-Saharan africa and the Gulf states .

Wrong, Most of the money was from western donors and recently from some private investments in Rwanda. But I don't deny that countries around the DRC (especially Uganda and Rwanda) looted the DRC.

Can't say Kigali looks like the most exciting city in Africa, but it's good to see it is developing for the better, especially after the horrific events in the 90s.

Kenguy February 17th, 2008, 01:43 PM ^^
Rwanda's GDP was $11.24 billion in 2005, and Im sure this must have increased over the years. Like all East African countries, its economy relies heavily on agriculture with the exports being mainly tea and coffee. However, tourism has also been a major contributor to the economy and also mining of coltran (a mineral used in satellites, mobile phones etc.) also brings in some revenue.
The driving force IMO is just a hard working population (given the few resources) and a development conscious government. They are focusing now on ways to transform Rwanda into an I.C.T. hub for the continent.

The business opportunities are many. It just depends on which sector you would like to invest in but I'd place my bet in I.T., construction and retail (supermarkets, malls etc.-There is a rapidly expanding consumer base but I haven't seen any large retail establishment yet) in Rwanda. Most Kenyans in Rwanda are employed in the service industry mostly as managers for multinationals or as skilled professionals but many also engage in business especially in Kigali.
As for investing, Rwanda has a new stock exchange though it only has government bonds at the moment. but there are plans to integrate it into the East African Stock Exchange after they bring together the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam stock exchanges and the Uganda securities exchange.

Its proposed. I think TBite had posted renders for the IT and convention centre earlier in the eastern africa construction section. Though I dont know if it will be built near the CBD or the Suburbs of Kimihurura, Nyarutarama where the pics have been taken.

Milimani August 26th, 2008, 05:51 AM Nakumatt goes regional and opens Rwanda branch
Published on 25/08/2008
By Oscar Pilipili In Kigali
Supermarket chain Nakumatt Holdings has crystallised its East Africa expansion plan with the opening of a supermarket branch in the heart of Kigali, Rwanda.
The supermarket chain, which has announced plans to cover the Pan-African market in the coming years, has opened the doors to its first Sh204 million ($3 million) outlet at the Union Trade Centre.
The new outlet, covering a shopping floor space of more than 25,000 square feet, is the first operational Nakumatt outlet outside Kenya.
Speaking during the opening of the branch, Nakumatt Holdings Operations Director Thiagarajan Ramamurthy said the company would invest more than Sh1.3 billion in the East Africa expansion plan, which would see the chain open three branches in Uganda, two in Rwanda, four in Tanzania and raising its Kenyan network to 30 in the next two years.
world class standards
During the event officiated by Rwanda’s Minister for Trade and Industry Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Ramamurthy pledged to maintain the firm’s world class standards in the expansion drive.
"Through this supermarket, we shall also be focusing our energies on the transfer of global retail best practices to Rwanda." The supermarket’s entry to Rwanda is a culmination of an investor programme spearheaded by the Rwanda Investment and Export Promotion Agency (Riepa).
Riepa Director-General Francis Gatare said the move would facilitate further development in the country’s retail sector as envisioned in the Rwanda Vision 2020 development blueprint. He said Nakumatt’s entry into Rwanda was a rich harvest.

Kenguy February 21st, 2009, 05:51 PM Where are most of the middle income/rich communities in Kigali?

I found a personal blog that best describes Kigali's neighbourhoods.
Kigali’s Neighborhoods,
by Morgan in Africa.
Many people have written to me, asking about different neighborhoods in Kigali. I wanted to do a quick summary of the ones I have seen or spent time in (especially for people who are moving here and are thinking about where to rent/buy a home). For travelers wondering where all the action is, this could also give you an idea. I don’t know all the neighborhoods, and welcome input on the ones below, as well as others!
Kiyovu- The center of town. It’s the place where you can find all the different knick-knacks you want and need, including office supplies, automotive supplies, etc. There’s a street peppered with foreign exchange bureaus, and the rate is one of the best you can find (better than the bank rates). Express matatus to the other big towns in Rwanda leave from here (as well as Nyabugogo...but leaving from Kiyovu is generally more convenient). The Belgian School is located here. The supermarkets are here as well: BCK, Patel’s, La Bonne Source, and La Galette (also known as the German Butchery). Union Trade Center (which will soon have a Nakumatt Supermarket—a Kenyan chain) has a Bourbon Coffeeshop. Two of the big hotels are located here—the Serena and the Mille Collines. Most of the houses in this neighborhood are quaint and pre-war. The boulevards are wide and flowery. The President currently lives here (though he has plans to move soon). There are many NGO offices here. Most of the favored restaurants among expatriates are in this neighborhood. Many NGO workers live here.
Kacyiru- The ministry area. This is where the President’s office is located, as well as most of the ministries (the Ministry of Health is in Kiyovu). They line one long road called the Avenue de la Gendarmerie. Generally speaking, water and power are dependable here, because of the proximity to the ministries. A lot of NGOs have offices here. The homes vary widely, from pre-war to brand-new mega-mansions. Novotel is located here, as are some temporary executive furnished apartments. The U.S. Embassy is located at the end of the Avenue de la Gendarmerie.
Kimihurura- The place where the ministers live. In fact, the central road in Kimihurura is called Minister’s Road, or la Rue des Ministres, which is a wide boulevard. There is a beautiful stone paved road in Kimihurura, and several NGOs have offices there. Papyrus, La Fiesta, Comme Chez Moi, and the Restaurant Hellenique are located here. The homes here vary as well; along Minister’s Road, the houses are large and stunning. Off the road, the houses are not as flamboyant but are generally post-war and are still quite spacious. Some of the roads are unpaved. Many NGO workers live here.
Nyarutarama- The ritzy neighborhood. Everything here reeks of new wealth. The houses are unbelievably large (though frankly, their interior layouts are sometimes a bit awkward and illogical) with columns, marble, and the works. Some even have swimming pools. There was a building boom in this area that has petered off...as a result, many houses are unfinished until someone wants to take them. A lot of wealthy expatriates live here (i.e. not the poor ones who work for small NGOs). The MTN center is located here, which is a growing mall (most of its space is still vacant). There are several restaurants on the top floor, as well as a Bourbon Coffee, and the ground floor boasts another branch of the German Butchery (also known as La Galette). This area looks like California, with tall white houses, sparkling windows, red tiled roofs, and perfectly manicured gardens.
Kagugu- Ritzy neighborhood, rather empty. Most of the McMansions are vacant. There are subdivisions here that eerily resemble the U.S. It’s located past Nyarutarama.
Nyabugogo- The main bus station. The most chaotic area of Kigali! Services such as power and water are largely undependable. Houses tend to be off the beaten path, and are much simpler here. There is a large market in this area, and the international bus services leave from here. The domestic ones do, as well, but I have always found it easier to navigate the bus area in Kiyovu instead.
Remera- Near the stadium. There are a couple little supermarkets here, like Ndoli’s. Chez Lando and the Auberge Beausejour are here, as is the O Sole Luna restaurant. The houses here are nice but not extravagant—many will have 3 bedrooms, a sitting room, and an outdoor kitchen, or a kitchen housed separately, a more traditional setup. There is a buzzing nightlife here—lots of little buvettes. And it’s chaos when the Rwandan team plays!
Safety
Safety and security are really outstanding in Kigali. The police and army take their jobs seriously, and are trustworthy. In terms of walking at night, there are generally few dangers. The most common I have heard is of people whose cell phones have been stolen because they were walking and talking on them at night...and even that isn’t common.
Houses and office compounds usually have a guard—otherwise, there is usually razor wire or broken glass cemented onto the tops of the walls.
I feel perfectly safe walking around by myself at night. Nyarutarama, Kimihurura, Kiyovu, and Kagugu are particularly safe; keep your wits about you in Nyabugogo and Remera (at night). It’s not to say that anything will happen, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Rents
Generally, rent in Kiyovu and Remera (not sure about Nyabugogo) range from $500-1500 a month. For the wealthy neighborhoods of Kimihurura, Nyarutarama, and Kagugu, the range tends to be from $1500-2000. When realtors propose a price, always negotiate.
Input on these and other neighborhoods is welcomed!
Kenguy February 21st, 2009, 05:55 PM The homes look rather large, are they a tri-quad or multi family residential structures or single family ? Quite large for a single family, are the estates for the upper/high/top classes ?
^^
Its an East African thing. The wealthier you get, the bigger the house you want to live in even if you only live 3 people in that house.
The pic above is probably Nyarutarama.
Kenguy February 21st, 2009, 06:00 PM Are it liek Port-su-Prince where the upscale housing in in the hills?
^^
In both Uganda and Rwanda, the higher up a hill you go, the wealthier the neighbourhoods. I guess its something to do with the lowlying areas having swamps and wetlands. Its just my observation.

Please no politics. Like him or hate him, Kagame overall has done a good job in Rwanda.
I didn't wanna get political but my brother you are wrong when it comes to Kagame. By the way, I am not saying that he is good only to the Tutsis because there are many Tutsis who are suffering because he doesn't care about them. I am speaking as a Rwandan who thought Kagame was going to let people be free but I was wrong. He is one of the biggest dictators in the world, please don't be fooled. By the way, he owns all major businesses in Rwanda and other Rwandans who try to challenge his businesses are kicked out of the country. as for the politicians, he either kills them, or puts them in jail for a long time. I am speaking as a Rwandan who wants to see real progress, without democracy, we are not going anywhere. Thanks.
Mulopwe July 14th, 2009, 05:46 PM Kenguy,
A dictator , Criminal , he will pay for suffering and killing , raping etc... That's all I can say.
By the way , so far I don't see anything extra ordinaire ... few buildings here there ... few houses ... nothing big ... looks like little home town ... small people ... small mind.
Kenguy ,there will not be long lasting peace without true dialogue between Hutu and Tutsi .... Kagame is an handicap.

Kenguy July 15th, 2009, 04:26 PM Erwin5Rw and Mulopwe,
I only want to highlight the progress Rwanda has achieved in the past few years. That said, Its no use defending African leaders since most seem to read from the same script. I guess I have largely given up on them.
Thanx for sharing your thoughts.

Jeeper767 July 16th, 2009, 05:04 PM What a wonderful thread. As I stated in another thread, I'm going to be moving to Kigali in October to work at an orphanage. It's nice to see all these images so I can have a better idea of what the city looks like.

oshon July 27th, 2009, 03:17 AM Kigali City as Rwanda’s capital is set to be transformed into one of the most modern metropolitan locations in Africa in tandem with the country’s ambition to be a hub of the region. City planners are upbeat that retaining the city’s attractive attributes such as concern for environment will seamlessly dovetail with future aspirations of the country.
As such the city has developed a master plan which is currently one of the most elaborate city and or urban planning endeavour by any local authority within the East African Community. The Kigali City master plan is thus a brilliant response of providing Rwanda’s capital city with its future dispensation.
Consequently the master plan is now considered a road map for actualizing the planned and aspired transformation. The Kigali Conceptual Master Plan is based on research and analysis of a wide range of background conditions and technical aspects outlined in the existing conditions report.
The report considered environmental, land use, infrastructural, cultural, and socioeconomic factors as well as economic and demographic projections, opportunities and constraints for the urban development.
Cleanliness of the City
Kigali city is now more famous for its remarkable cleanliness and social discipline order than anything else. Many visitors who have a chance to visit and stay in Kigali are impressed by the progress the city has achieved in such a short period of time given the devastation it endured during the 1994 Genocide.
The cleanliness of Kigali is being attributed to two good reasons. One is the prohibition on the use of polythene bags which have proved to be a nuisance in many cities especially within the EAC.
The other is the regular countrywide communal cleaning exercises that are held every last Saturday of every month.
Opportunities in real estate development
The housing industry in Kigali is still very fragmented. This in itself presents investors with unlimited opportunities within real estate.Planned settlement comprises a meager 7%, whereas the remaining 93% is catered to by spontaneous settlements.
Consequently the city master plan approved by the cabinet in 2008 has developed detailed plans for investors to come up with projects in planned settlement within lower Muhima, Nyarugenge, and Kimihurura gateway, Kimicanga and Kinyinya and Akamunigo covering a total area of 288ha.
Another crucial element of the city planning is that in Kigali city, district land commissions are already in place to ensure prompt and efficient service delivery in terms of providing land and building permits to those who need them.
A technical commission to approve the architectural designs for big building projects in the city has been established.
Infrastructure Development
Kigali City has its target of being a state of the art and aesthetically appealing city having sustainable infrastructure that includes roads, street lighting, good and reliable drainage systems as well as green spaces and city parks.
1. Roads
The responsibility for road construction and design lies with the Public Infrastructure Unit in the City of Kigali and road standards lies within the Directorate of Roads in MININFRA.
While there are a number of internationally acceptable standards for roads, bridges, and pathways that could be adopted, there is also a need to provide protocol for modifying provisions to incorporate native materials acceptable Rwandan road construction practices, e.g. stone pavements.
For this reason, a minimum set of design and maintenance standards for paved, gravel, and unpaved roads, bridges, viaducts, and culverts should not be quickly adopted.
2. Drainage systems
The drainage system in Kigali has a total distance of 102.800 km and this comprises of 96.193km that is not constructed and the remaining being constructed but still has a lot to be desired.
3. Street lights
Generally the priority areas for street lighting (Airport area, administrative areas, and commercial areas) in the city are well lit up. Many of the new constructed roads do not have street lighting. Traffic lights are still being repaired but needs periodic maintenance.
4. Green Spaces and City Parks
As far as green spaces are concerned Kigali City having a concept which suggests we are custodians of our important Green Spaces and valued areas so that they can be enjoyed by future generations. Whilst doing so it is vital that we provide the framework to satisfy the needs of the current generation, if Kigali is to continue to thrive as a City.
Social Services
Social facilities such as schools, hospitals, shelter and recreational centres are being stretched by the ever increasing city population, these calls for a proportionate increase of these amenities. In 2008, 118 primary classrooms were constructed bringing down pupil class ration to 56 from 59 in 2007.
In secondary schools 17 class rooms were constructed reducing the student classroom ratio by one from 46 in 2007 to45 in 2008.
4,134 primary school pupils and teachers accessed computers under one laptop per child program in 2008.
Health
In health sector, the city’s 854,485 people out of 1,024,423 residents of Kigali have access to health insurance of one form or other. Recently 96,360 houses out of 103,532 were sprayed with mosquito killing spray.
Kigali city management understands social services as going beyond schools and hospitals and addressing needs of marginal groups such as orphans and street children. During the course of 2008, 359 houses for needy people were constructed superseding the set target of 300.
386 child headed families were connected to guardians and 280 street children were taken off the streets and integrated into children centres.
Good Governance and Security
As far as security is concerned, Kigali is actually a much safer and stable place than most African cities.
In 2008 out of 18,560 Gacaca cases, 20, 613, judgements were passed equivalent which represents an achievement of 99%. Elections for members of parliament, the chamber of deputies were organised and 54, 0585 eligible voters cast their votes ranking Kigali a leader across the country with highest turn up rate of 99.2%

oshon July 27th, 2009, 09:41 PM Kigali — Kigali City is in the final stages of issuing municipal bonds for raising money to implement its ambitious city master plan.
The city management is about to receive and approve the final business plan, the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), and the information memorandum of the bonds.
The city has come up with a temporary value of the bonds amounting to Rwf300 billion ($526.3 million), to be raised in eight years, with annual coupon interest between 11% and 12%.
The date for the issuance is not yet confirmed but it's expected to be announced in the first two weeks of August, according to information from the city council.
The availability of the money in the economy will determine when these bonds will be issued but they will not be issued at one go.
The Kigali city master plan has identified six development projects that will be funded by the money to be raised from the bonds.
The master plan focuses on broad guidelines toward planning for the city for the next 50 to 100 years in order to accommodate the expected population growth of three million.
The document highlights the basic needs and livability of the city for its citizens: adequate housing, education and workplace opportunities, infrastructure and transport, healthcare and services, and quality of life.
The city publicist Bruno Rangira said the role of the city is to put basic infrastructure like water, electricity, roads and sewage systems in zoned areas to be sold to the investors.
