"Several months ago, Derwent Valley Central struck a deal with Mean Fiddler to 're-develop' the complex on Tottenham Court Road housing the Astoria venue.

The plan seems to be to knock down the complex to make way for extra shops, flats and offices in time for the Olympics in 2012.

We're not letting the Astoria go without a fight. An outlet for the arts is being destroyed in favour of something the surrounding area doesn't really lack in. England is at an all-time high as far as developing new music is concerned - why stunt that by taking away the premier music venue of its size in London? The Astoria marks the point at which a band is just about to hit the big time - the loss of this place may take away the rise of the next big breakthrough in London's music scene.

The only other venues of similar size are in North London - not the best place to be caught after dark when you're a bit worse for wear. As the sale has already taken place and there's no reversing that we may as well try for a new complex of shops to be built around the venue, like the Islington Academy"

Sign the petition! I doubt very much that the enlightened lights of humanity in Westminster Council have anything in their masterplan to help in anyway shape or form.

mean fiddler dont actually own the building they simply lease it and the real reason it is going to be redeveloped is that it is the planned location for the crossrail station for tottenham court road

They are also trying to demolish the lightbar in Shoreditch (the site next to northgate- so I would assume its Hammerson possibly trying to incorporate the site.

Granted its not an iconic music venue as the Astoria but a very cool club & building

Please no!! Why do these culture theives keep rearing there ugly heads, only to make money...WE ARE LONDON AND WE SAY NO! STOP RUINING THIS LEGENDARY CITY, this is our culture and we wont let it go..like we need more shops, there are are fair few empty shops in this area there's a massive decaying empty building next to the dominion theatre..so why destroy this rock and roll church? Its packed throughout the year and used by people from all of London's diversities... LEAVE US ALONE!!!!!...Any protests let me know and I'll be there.

I agree with saving the light Bar, but I'll only support the Astoria being saved if the people behind saving it are willing to stump up the cash to refurbish the building and bring it into line with modern requirements. The place is a falling apart death trap, and on the weekends when it is taken over by G-A-Y flangrantly goes against health and safety laws by allowing more people in than it legally can hold.

To be honest saving the Astoria is a lost cause, the Crossrail station when it is finally built will replace this building and a lot more Londoners would prefer a 21 st century transport project which benefits the whole of London than saving a theatre hall with no particular historical redeeming features.

Same thing's happening over in Bradford. A 3,318 seater cinema/concert venue is planned for demolision to make way for some generic multi-use piece of rubbish. Absolutely ludicrous.
