With many of Britain's estuary & coastal cities expected to be under many feet of water in 100 years time, what is the view of Londoners of London losing it's status as capital city by 2090, with major Government departments moving to the regions, notably Birmingham?

Do you think we will have a system like South Africa, whereby we could have 2 or 3 capital cities (in England), covering different aspects of governing England?

I'm not sure this is the right thread for this...

Besides it will never happen for Brum as Manchester is far more desirable as an alternative capital

Is it? Warwick or York are far more desirable places than Manchester, presently, but we are talking in 80 years time, not today. Birmingham is a far more desirable place than it was 25 years ago, and has imporved it's image in that time far more than Manchester has ..... Birmingham HAD to!

What do you mean by "desirable" anyway??

I think we will have a bloody good go at preserving London's status by trying to prevent flooding of Central London in the first place. Hopefully by reducing global warming and climate change and by also opening up the flood plains in the Thames Estuary and building a second Thames barrier further down river if necessary.

Ultimately though London is a goner, what with post glacial rebound and rising sea levels.

The barrier is due to be replaced in 40 years time and would have a life expectancy of another 50 years under the most pessimisitic circumstances.

By then, I would image much of east london will be stilted and barraged and the chances of any need to move will never come....just as Holland has been for hundreds of years.

Will Manchester see an influx of scousers evading the rising torrents? No talk of a Mersey barrage yet? ( I am aware the southeast is sinking) If sea-levels are rising so fast then what future Blackpool, Warrington, Chester.....

See it and believe it..

otherwise... box it off under the "I need a research grant for my University Department" section of hog-wash and piffle.

On a global catastrophe scale the following will (on statistical averages) have happened before London floods... nothing!

It's fine so long as there is a working economy. If for some reason the world economy collapsed then building the barries could be tricky. I'm an optimist though.

By the time London is underwater many other cities like New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and others will be partly underwater

Islington's on a hill... We're sorted here

^^ We can demolish everything on Muswell Hill and build hundreds of 1000m towers to house all the Londoners ;)

Its very unlikely that London will suffer terrible flooding in 50 or so years... and it won't be underwater in another 100.

For this to happen, there needs to be a substancial rise in sea-level, and London needs to be mostly below sea-level. Even if London were mostly below sea-level, like New Orleans, adequate flood defences should protect the city against all but the most fierce storms (like Katrina)

Just waterproof the first 20ms or so of all the tall buildings in London and build bridges between them all to connect them all up.

Add jetties and piers to them and viola - London becomes Venice! Imagine Canary Wharf with all the towers rising out directly from the river...

I don't think the capital is moving anywhere. Who know, I'll over 100!

It would be cool if they built a huge glass bubble around London and made it an undersea city

TheFly

That would be daft because bubbles float and you would end up with London floating off into the North Sea before bursting on a Norweigan rock and everyone drowning.

London has survived several disasters. We will simply rebuild a modern style atlantis :D

No, because most of Manchester will be gone too. :)
