Just try the host file thing?
My "secret" was using the SSC server as a proxy server which is incredibly fast, but I think the host file thing is just as fast.

Effer,just go to http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?p=2274004&posted=1#post2274004

Why SSC WAS inaccessible

SSP posts:

Recieved this e-mail from Jan:

Hi guys,

Just letting you know the forums are offline because we've been moved to another network, which requires some parts within the servers network to be updated. Also this weekend work on the new database has started, so even if it eventually turns back online, expect some outages and bumpy service. But is should all be for the good. Thanks for the patience!

Cheers,
- Jan

I got this messege from Jan

Yeah, no worries we've been moved to another network which requires the dns servers to update their data. Plus we're also upgrading hardware at this moment. But were on it. Eventually a improved version should return, so just enjoy the break :)

Cheers,
-Jan

Why SSC is inaccessible

SSP posts:

------------------------------------------------------

How to access the SSC domain for the meantime while the server is down

*Start Menu-> Run ->
*Then in the box labelled "Open:", paste this (depends on what version you are using)

Windows 95/98/Me: notepad c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro: notepad c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home: notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

*and press Enter or click OK
*and when the file is opened, add this to the
bottommost:

66.249.139.179 www.skyscrapercity.com
66.249.139.179 skyscrapercity.com

It should look similar to this:
http://www.arrakis.es/~aokromes/2.jpg

*Save and Exit
*Restart your browser and voila

BUT HERE'S A REMINDER: Remember to erase what
you've pasted in the hosts file when SSC goes back
to normal or otherwise SSC will stop working for you
if the IP does change again, and by then most people
would've forgotten what they did in the first place,
locking them out of the site.

Please be guided. Thank You.

Hey, yes SSC is back but some people are sending me messages in YM that they couldn't access SSC (and they didn't edit their host files at all). So what's wrong with theirs?

August 28th, 2006, 08:39 AM
SSC is super fast now. I thought initially that it was my broadband connection that was slow but everything is so fast now I FINALLY realized its because hardly any users are online now....................

Whats happening to SSC nowadays??? Its becoming more unreliable...but one realized one's dependence on it onces its gone...

It works! Thankyou very much for telling us. I have missed SSC over the past few days that I didn't know about the secret. Thankyou so much.

They prob have to wait for thier ISPs DNS Cache to catch up.

Sorry for all these troubles guys. There's a couple of things going on at the same time hardwarewise, which isn't always withing our control. Naturally we're on it to get thing back to normal asap.

Yeh I haven't been on in 5 days because it brings me to the google search for skyscrapercity when i type in ssc in the address bar. When I click on SSC it says the server is down. I thought it was something wrong with my comp because we had bad storms the other day. I was scared I could never get on again. :(

If you're on Linux or using an Apple Mac it's a bit more complex but if youre using Linux you'll be used to that.

This is FUD!!

The only thing that had to be done to make things work was paste the following lines in a root-terminal:

echo "66.249.139.178 skyscrapercity.com" >> /etc/hosts
echo "66.249.139.178 www.skyscrapercity.com" >> /etc/hosts

and that's all there is to it. (And much less work than the Windows method)
