The SECOND tier of English football is called the championship, its is a bitterly competative league because of the prize of reaching the premiership! I would say it would rival most other european FIRST tier leagues in terms of stadia size! Check them out!

BRIGHTON

Brighton are currently homeless, they play at a converted athletics stadium that is very small while they go through legal wrangles to build a 25,000 seat stadium.

The lower leagues (ie third division, fourth, etc) can get pretty crazy as well. Milton Keynes Don's are currently building...and wait get this: a 30,000 all-seater, all-covered stadium - they are in the 3rd division (ie ranked from the end of all football seasons as 64th.....)!!!!!

Brighton's planned new 25,000 stadium aint to bad looking either!

Nor is Coventry's new 32,000 stadium - quite an interesting design that incorporates a hypermarket and a leisure centre (nearly finished).

This thread makes me sad. I see how far the Greek league lags behind even Britans second division in terms of stadia. Besides Karaiskaki Stadium, The Athens Olympic Stadium, Kaftanzoglio(Thessaloniki), stadiums in Patras, Volos, Crete most of these stadia are better than the stadia of any teams in the Greek league. Sad to see if you ask me.

The North and South bank will have an extra tier added although it wont be seperated from whats thier already, so literally it will be how it is now, but twice the height.

http://www.duesselhopper.de/Wolves20033.jpg

The Steve Bull stand will also get an extra tier aswell as new corporate boxes. this is the long sided top stand. The corners will also be filled in. upping the capacity by 17,750 seats. This picture shows it best, just imagine the 2 side tiers being twice as high and with the same seating gradient - be almost American like.

St Marys is also great...and Hull Citys.

Top German Sides Bayer Leverkusens stadium has a capacity of 22K...many lower leage team stadiums in the UK beat that.

We may not have the biggest biggest, but we have the biggest smallest...by far

They've asked for the first 3 games of the season to be played away as it wont be completed.

P.S its not silver in real life, its actually white and doesnt look quite as good.

Definately one of the best though, ... However, even if I was a neutral my favourite stadium would still be molineux "The Custard Bowl" just because its different and the proposals look stunning. Where else would you find a pure golden stadium, its so bright and fun. huge TV's in either corner and wolves heads on the mounds, just cant beat it. Whenever I go its like going to an amusement park ;)

How many know of the Greek league and how many know of the English leagues?

Greeces Stadiums are superior for a small nation and small following. And Greek soccer will only get better.
Problem with Greek soccer is that theres no competition. AEK Olympiakos and PAO Get all the attention. How many people here out of greece know of another greek club?

I'v always had the impression that English football has more strenght in depth than most other nations due to its history. Since it developed here rather than being introduced many of the dominant early teams were not nesserarly from the larger cities.

You only have to look at the attendance figures for English football by comparison to the rest of Europe (and probably the world) to see that that is true. Germany is the only nation than can match England's top league attendances, but only because Germany currently has far bigger stadia.

But in every division below the top flight, English football's attendances are so much bigger, they hardly bear comparison with other countries. In fact, attendances in the second tier of English football are higher than top flight attendances in all but four or five other countries.

Even the third tier of English football is better attended than the majority of countries' top tier football.

Incidentally, in addition to the stadia already shown in this thread, think of the stadia that have just left the Championship: City Ground, Nottingham (about 30,000); Stadium of Light, Sunderland (about 48,000); Upton Park, West Ham (about 36,000); and JJB stadium, Wigan (about 25,000).

Olympiastadion is still the 2nd largest stadium in Germany then (and will remain so for the forseeable future then?) at around 76,000 and the Westfalenstadion at around 82,000 then yes?? I took a few pictures of the Olympiastadion when I was in Berlin - quite a nice mix of stone and refurbish interior

Germany doesn't have a 3rd division. There are 2 Bundesliga leagues then after that you have regional leagues made up of mainly amatuer teams like Hamburger SV-2, FC Köln-2, SV Werder Bremen-2, TSV Bayer 04 Leverkussen-2, FC Bayern München-2 etc.

"Below the level of the 2.Bundesliga, leagues are most often subdivided on a regional basis. For example, the Regionaliga is currently made up of a Nord (North) and Sud (South) division, and the Oberliga is comprised of divisions representing states, or large urban and geographical areas. League structure has shifted frequently and typically reflects the degree of participation in the sport in various parts of the country. In the early 90's, changes were driven by the reunification of Germany and the subsequent intregration of the national leagues of East and West Germany.

Every team in the Bundesliga must have a license to play in the league, or else they get relegated into the regional leagues. To obtain a license teams must be financially healthy and meet certain standards of conduct as organizations."

At the moment the list reads -

Bundesliga - 39717, Premiership - 33647

Bundesliga 2 - 13122, Championship - 17382

The DFB predicts averages will end up around the 41000 mark at the end of the season, as crowds will get bigger as the winter months come to an end. Crowds are always a bit lower in Germany in the Dec-Feb months.

I await the wrath of the English 'fanboys'!!

I'm convinced Germany will break the 40,000 barrier. Well done to them, the policy of constructing larger stadia than required to allow for fan number growth and cheap tickets is really paying off in the Bundesliga.

That info might be right this info is wrong very very wrong

Steve Edwards informs me; 'Haringey Council have now approved plans for the redevelopment of the East Stand at White Hart Lane. When completed this will increase the capacity of White Hart Lane to 50,000. However, the Club will not go ahead with the re-development until the Government improve transport links around the stadium. The Club have even mooted that if the transport situation is not adequately resolved, they would leave the Lane and possibly move to the new Wembley Stadium that is currently being built'.

I don't how Spurs could add 14,000 seats to the East stand. That info has been there for years at the time that info came out (2001) Spurs actually had plans to make WHL 44,000 by re-building the East stand so I don't know about that site whether to beleave it or not.

Your being misleading with Leipzig. The boyfriend of a friend of mine, plays for their team, and has he tells me the club has to pay a crippling amount of rent to use the stadium from its owner. Additionally Leipzig was built because the previous stadia was one of the largest in the Eastern Bloc, and it was thought to be appropiate to replace it, after unification with a fitting modern stadium appropiate to the city's former legacy.

All the English 2nd League Stadia are owned by their clubs, and by and large most of them reach near capacity.

It is though, a very fine stadium, for a very nice city.

The German Bundesliga has higher average attendances at the moment becasue of various factors:

a) There has been a fairly recent construction of lots of high capacity, high quality stadiums which fans are attracted to, meaning average attendances are bound to be higher with higher capacity, quality stadiums.

b) With the World Cup approacing in Germany, football has been given even greater scope in recent years for German club football.

c) Ticket prices are extraordinarily cheap, with the average price being €18 compared to the English avergae €44.

d) Germany's population of over 80m far outstrips that of the English 50m

e) Recent success in football for German club teams has gained more interest from fans.

But, through all of this, the English Premiership is still probably the most respected, world renown, passionate and exciting league in the world at the moment, with the Spanish La Liga very close behind.

Plus, with Arsenal's new 60,000 stadium, Liverpool's probable new 60,000 stadium some time in the future, Man United's expansion of Old Trafford to 76,000 and other clubs thinking about or currently updadting their own stadiums, I think the Premiership will see higher everage attendances then ever in coming years.

German games have amazing atmosphere due to passionate fans who sing all game, arrange great fan displays and give it their all for 90 minutes. They also have large standing terraces at nearly all German stadiums which helps the atmosphere. There is no comparison, German games have amazing atmosphere!!

I've stopped watching the Premiership because it's so rubbish. On most games on Sky you can hear a pin drop and the league is pointless as Chelsea have won it before a ball is kicked.

The Premiership has been 'self-declared' the best league in the world by English fans, but in reality it is utter mince!! It was good about 4 years ago, but it has been going downhill ever since. Most game are terrible!! You would have to pay me to watch the likes of Aston Villa, Sunderland, Birmingham City, Charlton Athletic, West Bromwich Albion, Portsmouth, Everton. Most games on Sky could send you to sleep!!

At English games, all you see is punters sitting around looking drab in drab clothes, sitting on their arses doing nothing. Lots of them don't even wear team colours!! I hope the Premiership improves as right now it's terrible with absolutely no passion or excitement!! All the English guys at my work even admit they don't watch nearly as many games on Sky as they used to, as they find it boring and Chelsea have won it before the season starts!!

You have obviously never been to a German league game! It's amazing, truly passionate fans who sing, chant and give it their all for 90 minutes. It's like nothing you have ever seen in the UK!! They really love their football!! I'm afraid the days of UK fans being passionate at games has well and truly ended!!

Look at these photos from German league games - these are just ordinary league games - no comparison i'm afraid!!

BuBomb, don't overload the thread with pictures you idiot, you should post no more then 5 pics really if you wanna respect the presence pf other users...but then again, judging from what I have seen of you on thses forums, I'm talkin to a brick wall aint I?

I never said football in Germany wasn't passionate, I'm well aware that the fans are well up for the games. But this isn't the case in EVERY game as you seem to suggest. And what the hell are you talking about the Premiership being 'bloody awful'....this all relates back to one thing, the massive amounts of pictures, the criticism etc etc, it all comes back to your blatent dislike and/or bitterness towards England. The Premiership is just as passionate and intense as it has ever been. And I should know, I watch every game possible on t.v. or at Old Trafford, so don't give me this crap about fans just sitting around and not creating an atmosphere, cus quite frankly, ure talkin shit. Even in games where there is no real rivalry, there is still a decent atmosphere and you can more often then not hear fans singing and chanting. All right, maybe not 100% of time, every second of every single match, but I don't think I'd be wrong in saying that the English are probably the most passionate nation about football in the world. Sometimes this isn't a good thing, as the fans go too far with their desire to see England or thier club team do well. But still, games in the premiership are as intense and exciting as ever they were. It may not be up to the Scottish league's standard, where you have only two big teams, with only one real rivalry, where games are dull as hell, there are no legendary players, no world status, no....anything. It's no wonder Celtic and Rangers are always begging to be allowed to join the Premiership...dream on guys, dream on!

This thread is about Championship football and its stadia in England, so all this german league nonsense doesn't belong here, and neither do you BuBomb, as you seem to have a canny ability to ruin even the most obscure threads with your blatent anti-english comments. A lot of the time it isn't direct critiscm, it is done sneakily so you can claim later that you never said anything wrong, but it is more the general fact that you never ever say anything good about anyhing English, and every time someone else says soemthing good about england, you point out all the bad areas and give facts that say other countries are better then what England have got.. Give it a rest BuBomb, you're a bitter Scot, we get it, don't keep going on about it!

You don't have a clue!! I have been to many English games and the atmosphere is the same as it is in Scotland - utter shite. Fans just sit and watch the game and do nothing to create an atmosphere. I have been to see Man United and Liverpool numerous times and the atmosphere was shocking. Same goes for nearly all Rangers and celtic home games (apart from European games). At Old Trafford there was 67500 fans at the game I went to, and the place was so quiet with not a single fan display - it was terrible!!

Ticket prices doesn't explain why German games have an atmosphere that is literally hundreds of times better than UK games. A 50000 crowd in Germany will be have an amazing atmosphere with amazing displays and fans going nuts for 90 minutes - a 50000 crowd in the UK will have nearly 50000 fans sitting doing nothing except playing with their mobile phones!!

As for being anti-English, I am talking about Scotland as well. Most honest UK fans will admit the atmosphere at most games in the UK is shockingly bad!! You have simply shown yourself as being anti-Scottish by having a go at Scotland simply because that is where I live!! Don't dish it out if you cry when you get it back!!

Just look at the German pics!! You never see anything like that in the UK!! Admit it - you have never been to a German game, because if you had you would know that UK crowds create rubbish atmospheres compared to German league games!!

As for the The Premiership being just as passionate and intense......grow up!! I doubt even the English people on this board will back you up with that one!! It's no longer the 'FA Barclaycard Premiership', it's the 'Who will come 2nd FA Barclaycard Premiership'!!

Why are you such a 'fanboy'?

This thread is about Championship football and its stadia in ENGLAND

This might come as a shock to you, but countries other than England have 2nd divisions and 2nd tier stadiums :eek2:

If I went off-topic by talking about top German division stadiums, then you also went off-topic by talking about top English division stadiums. To be honest though, I doubt you will understand or see this!!

Do you realise this is an international board and not an English stadium board? This thread is called 'Second Tier Stadia', not 'English only Second Tier Stadia'!!

I think the cap is about 30.000 (and yeah I am Dutch, and we don't have any, I am thinking about Rotterdam but I'll show that one later and let you guys deside, but first..... Standaard Liege (I like this stadium bye the way, it's steep!, and about 75 % 3 tires

Croke Park - Dublin (82,000)

3/4 of the sides at least. Pity about Hill 16, but I still don't think there's room outside the stadium to build and I'm not sure if the GAA have the money / even want to redevelop it anyway.

New Lansdowne Road - Dublin - (55,000)

Given that they're spending something like 300m Euro on this, the North End is fucking awful. Damn those rich people and their house owning! Hopefully before building starts, they'll have a brain wave that the bus-shelter at that end will acts as an atmosphere leak and do the thing properly.

Maybe 66% so we can still get some nice baseball stadiums in this thread, sometimes these go very high...

The Mestalla is immense and the small upper tier scares the shite out of you.

Wezza, the modern stadia in Europe is developed with safety right at the top of the list, the number of exits, access to the playing surface, under stand circulation, gangways etc., I'd be suprised if you couldn't empty the Westfalen Kop in 2/3 minutes or less.

Because Italy was so much better. No matter how imposing, no crowd could have changed that.

Oh, you're talking about the Italian diving team, yeah they're so talented. They can dive, they can fake, they can act, pity they can't play football.

I'd like to know how quickly that stand at Dortmund could be evacuated in an emergency!!

A stadium that I would be worried about in an emergency is Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. It takes 15 minutes to get out and that's on the bottom tier. The problem is that there aren't any exits on the Eastern or Western sides of the stadium, so you run into a massive crowd moving through the corridor as you come out of your aisle and then the crowds from the two corridors, plus the crowd coming up from the end aisles plus the crowds coming down from the upper tiers all converge at the ends, causing chaos. Serious issues there i think.

I'm talking about single tiers. Bristol is clearly not one big 167,000 single tier. You can see that the end stand is seperate and there is also a second tier. CBS Sportsline lists the grandstand(a single tier that covers 3/4 of the bowl) as 147,000. The grandstand at Daytona is actually listed over 200,000 as is Indianapolis, but they have two tiers. The total capacity for Texas Motor Speedway is well over 200,000, but the main grandstand is listed by CBS Sportsline at 154,861. There's also a huge grandstand on the backstretch. As for which is taller, just look at the pics. TMS is likely taller too. Bristol looks taller because its compact, but look at the pic and how small the cars look in comparison to the TMS stand.

Yes, I've been there, and Kansas and Kentucky and Texas. Hope to get to Talladega soon. That end is seperate and is raised a bit from the rest of the bowl. The rest of the stand is what seats 147,000. Even it is a piecemeal. That end totally has its own entrances.

After looking at the origination of the thread, the answer would be confusing. Stand on one side that includes all tiers? Single tier? I'm confused. Daytona's front tri-oval stand seats 167,000. I didn't include it because it has 3 tiers.

How on earth can the Südtribüne be the biggest tier when it's only one end of a stadium, and stadia like the Rose Bowl, Michigan Stadium etc. have a tier that wraps all the way around the pitch?!

If the question was about the deepest tier, then the Südtribüne might be in with a shout, though I'd throw in the big shallow end stand (East Stand) at Eden Park in Auckland, which seems to go back forever...

An example of how not to do this is at Stamford Bridge, where

And stadia like the K.C. Stadium in Hull also do a pretty good job of having an extra tier on one side that blends in well. It could be done to be unnoticable, but not so in Hull's case, as they've chosen to keep about 8 rows at the ends of the second tier.

I disagree. Thats actually the best example of what I was talking about. The two stands are joined as seamlessly as possible I think. Many other examples have got an extra tier here and there, but Murrayfield has 2 stands with 2 tiers of differing heights, but manages to join them. Doesnt look great, but it is as seamless as could be imo.

Cheers for that Neil F, I hadn't thought of Murrayfield.

I think you're the mad one. Compare the joins at Murrayfield with the joins in other stadia where two stands of different sizes join;

Riverside Stadium, Middlesborough, England;

Westfalenstadion, Dortmund, Germany;

The Valley, Charlton, England;

http://home.skysports.com/images/stadia/45.jpg

In actual fact, while not perfect, given that there is a pretty large size difference in the bottom tier at Murrayfield, the lower bowl is pretty much seemless, and the upper tier is only noticable because of the step, which, to be fair, is only there to maximise capacity. In fact, given the relative complexities of Murrayfield, including a different slope angle on the upper West Stand to the rest of the upper tier, I think it is a rather impressive job. They've managed it with a step, as opposed to the walls that are so familiar elsewhere.

It's also important to remember the evolution of Murrayfield in general. If you look at the picture below, you can see that what is currently the smaller stand was originally built without corners (you can see working being done on the corners in this picture). As such, it would easily have been possible to step the corners around into the smaller stand at the bottom of the upper tier, as it does the top of the upper tier. This would have lost out on about 1000+ seats, however. Honestly, I think Murrayfield does a fantastic job and, in like a lot of other stadia, has the excuse that it's evolved and wasn't built for purpose, like the Millenium Stadium, for example.

I take it all back - when I said "awkward-looking" I really meant "ugly". Yes, I agree that they have joined the East Stand to the two ends without any abrupt transitions, but I really can't stand the way the roof curves round and the sudden drop at the front of the upper tier.

In the ideal world in my head, the SRU should remove the sprint track, move the pitch west, and then replace the East Stand with a copy of the West, giving a uniform upper tier all the way round and a capacity of 75-80,000...

See, I actually get the feeling that this was what the original plan was, which is why the spring track is there in the first place, but also because of where the pitch access roads have been built into the stadium at the corner. More than that, it is the larger of the two stands (honestly, I forget which) that has most of the corporate entertainment etc. in it. I think the long-term goal was to build a uniform stadium

At the same time, even with the relative success of Scottish rugby over the past season or so, Murrayfield is just about the right size just now, and an increase of 10 - 15,000 is very likely to be wasted much of the time, except maybe in England games. Rebuilding not only one stand, but also the corners, the roof a lot of readjustment work on the North and South stands in those corners is a lot of time and money to spend and a significant drop in capacity while the work is completed, for a relatively small gain in capacity that wouldn't often be used.

I actually really like the way Murrayfield looks, even with the drop in the corners to the smaller stand. "Character" is a much overused word on this forum, especially since Murrayfield was mostly a newbuild that opened in 1994, but at the same time, as I've said, I feel the way it's been done at Murrayfield is some of the best work around (and of a design that could easily have been replicated at Old Trafford by dropping the ends of the third tier of the North Stand) and, especially since I am past the stadium on a regular basis and in it a few times a year. There's something about that lack of uniformity that I like.

The only real beef I have with it is that the floodlights mounted on the roof of the smaller stand shine right into the middle of the larger stand and it's impossible to watch the game without getting a bloody headache.

For what it's worth, I had interpreted the thread as the deepest tier. Why? Because if you just look at overall capacity, it would inevitably favour continuous, single-tiered structures and hey presto, the likes of the Rose Bowl/Michgan/Muich Olympiastadion/various NASCAR venues all come out on top.

So, who are my nominations? Well most of the usual suspects have all had a mention so far, with the possible exception of the old Wembley, the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

To keep this interesting, I have some suggestions that are all upper decks of a 2+ tier stadium, where as far as I can tell, only the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City has already been mentioned.

First up, I give you the West Stand at DKR Stadium, UT, Austin is particularly deep, but I accept its height may exaggerate its depth somewhat. Looking at the picture below, the lower tier is a contender as well:

http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.com/wp/Football/Stadium/Stadium_800x600.jpg

No longer with us, but the temporary second end tiers at the Sydney Olympic (now Telstra) Stadium were pretty deep:

http://www.globalholidays.co.uk/holiday_guides_images/sydney_aerial_olympic_stadium_l.jpg

Finally (for now), a potentially controversial one. I'm thinking of the Estadio Giuseppe Meazza at San Siro, Milan. I'm sure there is a faction who believe that the pre-1990 extensions on three sides constitute a separate (third) tier, as they were built at a later date than the structure below. I would argue that the angle of the tribune is maintained and the lack of an overhang makes it a very stong case to call it an enlarged second tier:

http://www.cechianerazzurra.com/img/san_siro/02.jpg

Unfortunately, I have no numbers relating to row depths for any of these three nominations, but if you know these numbers, then let me know...

I've always been fascinated by the engineering that allows seating decks to be cantilevered over the lower decks in stadiums. The bigger the cantilever, the more I like it--it seems.

Anyway, I was very curious if it's known what the largest cantilevered seating deck is in any stadium. The largest one that I'm familiar with is the upper deck at Yankee Stadium. It's about 22 rows from the front row to the first row that isn't on the cantilever (not counting the walkway):

http://coralrae.mlblogs.com/photos/yankee_stadium/dsc00300.JPG

^^ The white part of the end section clearly shows the cantilever, roughly 3/4 of the entire tier.

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee98/citi_field/Yankee%20Stadiums/a8253776.jpg

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee98/citi_field/Yankee%20Stadiums/40b71b7f.jpg

It's actually a cable-reinforced cantilever, with a steel cable "pulling" on the back of the deck to counterbalance the enormous weight:

If anybody has any examples of a larger cantilevered seating deck I'd love to see them!
