1 Churchill Place
Canary Wharf, London

Height: 156m
Floors: 32
Built: 2002-2004
Architect: HOK International
Developer: Canary Wharf Group

Notes:

- This was the most recent skyscraper to be built in the Docklands.

- Global headquarters of Barclays Bank, one of the Top 20 corporations in the world according to Forbes 2000. Barclays moved their operations from 54 Lombard Street (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=370536) in the City.

- First tower in the UK to have been built following September the 11th with redesigns to increase strength, featuring such security measures as extra cores to withstand an aircraft strike, plus additional air conditioning intakes on the roof to make it resistant to chemical weapons.

- This building was built with slip forms by P C Harrington, who set a British record of 156 metres in 14 weeks.

- The building contains more floorspace than Tower 42 and SwissRe combined.

- During the early stages of the tower's construction, it was rumoured to be getting a height increase up to around 200m.

- The building features a roof that is friendly to wildlife with grass and plants on the top to encourage bird life in particular around Canary Wharf.

^^ It is looking very possible that city airport will be closed in 10 years time, so don't worry my friend!

I like this tower, would've been great if it was just a few floors taller to balance the way it appears. Nice cladding:: 8/10

The sheer volume of this building is impressive to me - the fact that you could fit both Tower 42 and SwissRe inside it, and still have room to spare. Some nice engineering/structural features too, such as the anti-terrorist measures, the multiple cores, and the large atrium. The speed of its construction was also pretty cool to watch (some construction pics here (http://www.emporis.com/en/il/pc/?id=134307&aid=19&sro=1&yr=2003&mt=3)...).

Aesthetically it is rather bland though. But then, what do you expect from Canary Wharf?

It might not be the most amazing building in the world on the outside but it's beautiful on the inside.

NB Home to Barclays, BGC (Formerly Cantor Fitzgerald), London 2012 (LOCOG and ODA) plus limited spare space.

This building has got great cladding. however, its hard to believe that it is 156 metres!! It is far too fat, completely ruling out any soar, which means it just doesnt look tall. It is in fact taller than BT Tower in Birmingham, but it doesnt look it. I also feel it makes the buildings around it look less tall, as it ruins the sense of perspective. A thiner officer tower here would have helped to highlight the three main towers awesome height. As it is, it reduces their impact, and many a photo of Canary Wharf dissapoints me because despite having decent sized towers they just dont look very tall in photos sometimes!

Does Barclay's bank not have a very big corporate ego then? Surely they'd have preferred something taller than the HSBC / Citigroup buildings?

Saw it in the flest a few months ago when I was in London. Now, as a Canary Wharf building, I say 6/10. If it were anywhere else, it would be an 8.

So. I give 7/10. :)

5/10 Now I realise why they put their logos on the outside

If it was built outside Canary Wharf everyone would hate it. Imagine this behind St Paul's Cathedral  She's a wide one. And only looks good from the air. Hasn't it got a grass roof now?

Points for having a grassy roof, being tall, wide, yet not particularly ugly. 4/10

I gave it 4/10 too, just cos it adds density and its got nice cladding.

Not the nicest looking building in the Canary Wharf cluster but it does have some innovative features which raises the score for me. 7/10.

Its to wide & bulky which makes it look squat. Cladding a little dull as well. The atrium looks alright though.

I like it but I would have made it twice as tall...

I am thinking the same way. If he was higher, he would be more beautiful.
