Add a little more trees, and whitewash all the buildings, and you can trick someone into thinking that this is Mogadishu. ;)

Again, great pictures, Nouakchott looks like a very "home-like" place to me.

StormShadow

Judging my the aerial view the city seems to have a small number of 3 story buildings made of cement.

It's quite different than Khartoum geographically. Khartoum lies on the fertile Nile strip and Nouakchott lies on a flat sand desert along the coast with low fertility.

There seems to be a few "new" whitewashed residential buildings judging by a photo above, also some clay brick types too.

The minarets of the mosque seems to be the tallest structure in the city but I could be wrong. ;)

What an interesting country and such a unique capital ! The architecture o Nouakchott resembles to the ones in Muscat and the topography is almost similar to Salalah. Is Mauritania considered as an Arab country ? Does anyone have the pics of the 2nd largest town, Nouadibou ?

This is the African country that im really interested in, a colorful mixture of nomadic and modern life, Arabic and local traditions, nice food ( the fish with fries looks tastyyy ) with great beaches and superb settings.

also i m sure that in the future noukchot will be very beautifull , specialy that now they have the money to do it and also the democracy

This city will be very attractive if they just raise their road funding and plant some greenery to the side of the road. I''m not talking about the grass you see in North America or Europe, I'm talking about some greenery that is appropriate for a desert setting and something that is easy to maintain.

^^ Wow!! The place looks surreal, even for an African city. Looks cool, would love to experience it one day, but must be honest, the place seems very intimidating and out-of-this-world compared to even African cities places like Dakar, Lagos, Lusaka or Mombasa. But, that is what makes it appealing in a very exotic way.

But, could never live there, I think the summer temperatures would melt me and sublimate me right where I stood. :)

Certainly, a copse of palms placed at intervals along the median strip dividing each road could add some much-needed shade for pedestrians.

You are right.
The government knows this and is trying to work on it.

This article is about de restructaration of what we call Gazras(shantytowns).
The areas in blue are getting refurbished as we speak.

(i) une composante " marchés et stations de transport " comprenant la construction d'un grand marché dans la Kebba, 2 marchés de quartier (dont 1 dans la kebba et 1 dans la zone de recasement) et 3 aires de stationnement destinées aux véhicules de transport public;

(ii) une composante "éducation et santé " comprenant la construction de 5 écoles primaires, 3 nouveaux collèges, 6 salles de classes comme extension d'un collège existant et d'un centre de santé de type B ;

(i) d'une composante voirie consistant à ouvrir un réseau de voies primaires et secondaires dans le quartier en suivant une trame conçue pour être cohérente avec celle des quartiers lotis voisins. Elle comportera l'ouverture de plusieurs axes devant comprendre des routes bitumées (6.8 Km) et d'autres stabilisées (8.8 Km) ;

The centre of Nouakchott will not be forgotten:

-la localisation des équipements publics et collectifs ;
-les périmètres et limites des réserves foncières en vue notamment de réaliser des objectifs économiques et sociaux ;
-Les périmètres délimitant les secteurs de projets opérationnels tels ZAC, PIF ou autres;
-les servitudes d'utilité publique, notamment, les servitudes de protection des bâtiments anciens ou des réalisations architecturales à préserver ;
-les secteurs dont l'aménagement fait l'objet d'un régime juridique particulier ou de modalités de mise en œuvre particulières ;

Merci encore:),

Hello, everyone:

I lived in Mauritania for 6 years-- 80 to 86. Happiest years of my life. I know most people in the Western world will have a hard time understanding that by looking at these pictures-- but it was a country frozen in time (I imagine it still is to some degree), unique, authentic and unpolluted in every sense. Wonderful people.

When I look at these pics, I see that, in some ways, it has not changed at all. But looking at Google Earth it is amazing how much Nouakchott has grown. And I'm sure the Mauritania (and Nouakchott) I once knew are very changed.

I do have a very special request. If anyone is local there and can take some pics of a certain spot in Nouakchott that is (still) very dear to me, I would really appreciate it if you could send me a Private Message.

It's the biggest city in the Sahara + it's located at the sea so it can get windy spreading the sand everywhere.

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad238/Oumar9/Nktt/3170369-4532940.jpg

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Nouakchott, and had a great time meeting very hospitable people and wandering around the city. I liked it there; hopefully, one day, I will be able to return. I enjoyed looking at all the pictures on this thread.
