Overview.
Glasgow is Scotland's air hub, handling around 11.5million passengers per year. Glasgow offers flights to roughly 200 worldwide destinations, with direct flight on offer to 4 different continents, North America, Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Over 50 diffrent airlines fly to and from Glasgow, with around 300 movements per day.
Facts.
# Scotland’s busiest airport.
# 11.5 Million passengers per year.
# Around 200 worldwide destinations served.
# Over 50 airlines flying to Glasgow.
# 14 airlines have bases at Glasgow Airport.
# 4 airlines have their main hub at Glasgow International.
# Glasgow is the 3rd Gateway to the United Kingdom.
# 3rd after London and Manchester.
Glasgow has just under 30 long haul services which reach as far as the United States, Canada, Mexico the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle east and Pakistan. The majority of these flights are scheduled flights and operate all year round.
All three off Scotland’s home grown airlines are all based at Glasgow Airport. That’s Loganair who are a franchise of British Airways, Air Scotland and Scotland’s largest airline FlyGlobespan.
FlyGlobespan became the UK’s first budget airline to operate long haul flights, with a new daily service on a Boeing 767-300 from Glasgow to Orlando. In 2007 the airline will launch a daily service from Glasgow to Boston and a twice weekly service to Las Vegas and Barbados.
Expansion of Glasgow International.
In May a huge expansion of international departures and arrivals opened up, included in this is are new baggage facilities, shops, bars and two private lounges. More expansion work on international departures will be carried out during winter 2006/2007.
Just last week an expansion of the airfield with 4 new remote parking stands opened up and was in use.
In the last few years a lot of money has been spend on expanding the terminal and airfield facilities and this will continue over the next few year.
Aircraft using Glasgow Airport.
The largest aircraft that uses Glasgow Airport is the Boeing 777-300ER. Emirates Airlines use this aircraft on their hugely successful Glasgow to Dubai route. This route is expected to go twice daily from April.
The Boeing 747-400 also uses Glasgow on a frequent bases with Air Atlanta/Excel Airways, Travel City Direct and Virgin Atlantic.
Glasgow is the UK’s 3rd largest holiday airline airport, after London Gatwick and Manchester. The following holiday airlines are all operating from Glasgow. Most major UK holiday airlines have at least two aircraft based here, the smallest being a Airbus A321 and the largest a Airbus A330-200.
Connections.
In recent years many Americans and Canadians have been using Glasgow Airport as a gateway to Europe. These passengers will arrive into Glasgow on cheap flights from North America, largely offered by Air Transat, FlyGlobespan, US Airways and Zoom Airlines. Once in Glasgow they will use Easyjet or FlyGlobespan for onward flights to the UK and Europe. People from the UK and Europe are also doing this for cheap access to North America.
Glasgow Airport Hotels.
There are 5 hotels at Glasgow International. The Holiday Inn, Express by Holiday Inn, Ramada, Travelogue and a Premier Travel Inn.
Terrorism at Glasgow Airport
On the 10th of August 2006, American Airlines flight AA53 from Glasgow to Chicago was just one of many UK-USA flights targeted in the foiled liquid airliner bombings.
On the 30th of June 2007, two suicide bombers attempted to rap a jeep into the check-in hall of Terminal 1, security bollards prevented the car from entering the terminal, although the car did explode causing more damage to Terminal 1.
The two bombers were fought-off and beaten by members off the public, a baggage handler on his break, an airport taxi driver and two airline passengers.
Since the attack, the four members of the public have all won awards for there bravery, including the “Pride of Britain” Award.

I saw Thomas Gravesen being interviewed on tele there it looked quite modern but how does it compare with other British Airports (Manchester,Newcastle, Liverpool and Belfast etc)? Glasgow airport is far bigger than EDI. The pictures I have included are only off two different areas of the terminal, the main check-in hall and the international pier. I cant find pictures from other parts of the airport.

Skyhub to deliver ‘faster security, increased capacity and better customer service’
# Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to be merged together
# New purpose built security screening area
# Wider choice of shops, bars and restaurants
# Delivering a better customer service today and into the future
# A multi-million pound plan to expand Glasgow Airport – the biggest single investment by airport operator BAA Glasgow for a generation – is underway.
The £250 million project – known as skyhub – aims to reduce security waiting times, increase capacity in the terminal and offer passengers a wider choice of shops, bars and restaurants.
Work has already started on the 4,000sq metre skyhub development, which is expected to take 18 months to complete.
The two storey development will provide additional seating capacity on the ground floor, as well as new retail and catering facilities, and a new purpose built security search area on the first floor, through which all departing passengers will pass.
This will replace the existing three security zones (international, domestic and east pier) which will later be converted for use as retail, lounge and other passenger facilities.
The new search area will have capacity for up to 14 x-ray machines, four more than at present.
The development will also include a flagship World Duty Free store open to all departing passengers.
Gordon Dewar, managing director of Glasgow Airport said: “This expansion will allow us to concentrate our security search areas in one location, freeing up a huge amount of additional capacity within the terminal. This is particularly important during the busy summer months when Glasgow Airport can expect to handle over one million passengers in a single month.
“Security, for any airport, is of paramount importance and as passenger numbers increase, it’s important that we are able to screen passengers quickly and safely. We have already announced a major investment in additional staff and x-ray technology. skyhub takes that investment a step further and will give us the flexibility and the extra capacity that we need to provide a fast, efficient security screening service.
“Our aim, ultimately, will be to reduce the amount of time passengers wait in security lines and, in the process, deliver a better customer experience for our growing number of passengers.”
Glasgow Airport’s domestic and international search areas have recently been refurbished - and rebranded skyscreen - as part of a trial for the planned single search area.
Customer service director Derek Provan said: “We see skyscreen as the launch pad for a new type of airport security at Glasgow. The security and safety of our passengers is something we take extremely seriously, but airport security doesn’t have to be an ordeal. skyscreen is designed to create a more relaxing security environment that puts passengers at ease.”
The new layout will also bring retail benefits for passengers. Under BAA’s plans, the existing airside/landside boundary will switch, so that most of the shops currently landside (before security) will be located airside (beyond security). Once through security, passengers can shop, eat and relax anywhere in the terminal.
“Glasgow is quite unusual in that the majority of shops are currently landside. By switching the boundary, and moving the majority of our retail offer airside, it means passengers will enjoy bigger savings and more choice,” explained Mr Provan. “Once through security, passengers will have access to the full range of bars, restaurants and lounges on offer at Glasgow Airport.”
Mr Dewar added: “skyhub is the biggest single investment by BAA in Glasgow Airport for a generation and underlines BAA’s long term commitment to the airport. It is an exciting, ambitious project which puts the interests of passengers first. We want to make the journey through Glasgow Airport as safe, smooth and enjoyable as we can for all our passengers, delivering better service not just for today, but for the next generation of travellers. skyhub is the new way to travel at Glasgow Airport, our gateway to the future.”
FM 2258 July 16th, 2007, 10:14 PM I flew into this airport back in the summer of 2006 on American Airlines. Had my first real English Breakfast there and felt very comfortable at that airport. GlasgowMan July 31st, 2007, 02:29 PM Warning to terrorists: John Smeaton is back on duty!
Scottish travellers can breathe a sigh of relief today and terrorists should beware. Four weeks after an eventful cigarette break propelled him into a worldwide star, including features on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, praise in the House of Commons, and appearances on news channels worldwide, John Smeaton will return to work at Glasgow Airport.
At 14:00 today, Mr. Smeaton will return to his position as a senior ramp assistant at the airport, with CNN - the US-based news channel - sending a crew to document his return to Airway Handling Ltd.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, Mr. Smeaton's uncompromising recount of his actions won him a worldwide fan base. His blunt remarks rang true with viewers, particularly when he stated: 'This is Glasgow - we'll just set aboot ye,' and chided one alleged bomber thus: 'You're nae hitting the polis mate, there's nae chance.'
A website set up in his honor was visited by 500,000 people in its first 48 hours. Visitors to the site even raised enough money to buy him 1400 pints of beer at an airport hotel (although he will donated half the money to a charity which cares for injured military veterans, and will use the rest to fund a night out for other people involved in thwarting the bombing attempt).
As things begin to return to normal, Mr. Smeaton, who lives with his parents near the airport, can still expect a few high profile events. He will be invited to an official reception in Glasgow hosted by the First Minister, Alex Salmond, and is even tipped for a place on the New Year's Honours List.

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau also invested in the campaign, bringing the Glasgow: Scotland with style message to potential US visitors.
VisitScotland is the organisation responsible for attracting leisure tourism to Glasgow. Tom McWilliam, VisitScotland’s area director for Glasgow, said:
“I see these great results as a direct outcome of that partnership and our wider tourism industry, which is completely committed to making a success of routes into Glasgow,” he said.
Philadelphia is a fantastic city in its own right, very like Glasgow in many respects, and an important hub for onward travel connections. Despite the strong pound, it continues to draw American visitors to Scotland, and for US-bound travellers it’s an affordable and convenient way to travel direct to the States.

GlasgowMan February 19th, 2008, 07:27 PM Wizz Air Name Glasgow Prestwick as Their "Best Airport"
Glasgow Prestwick Airport’s relationship with Wizz Air continues to go from strength to strength.
As Wizz launched their latest new route from the airport, the inaugural flight to Poznan coincided with the news that Glasgow Prestwick was named the airline’s Best Overall Airport for the month of December.
This follows on from a second place finish in November and is based on performance criteria such as aircraft turnaround time and baggage processing.
Poznan is the fifth largest city in Poland and the fourth destination in that country to be served by Wizz flights from Glasgow Prestwick, along with Warsaw, Gdansk and Katowice.
Wizz operates at more than 40 airports around Europe and recently handled its 10 millionth passenger.
The Best Overall Airport accolade clearly shows not only the ability, but also the dedication and teamwork of the Prestwick Handling department, which is made up of Passenger Handling, Aircraft Dispatch, Ground Services, Motor Transport and Passenger Services.
Two Glasgow Prestwick staff members, Scott Plain and Barbara McMaster, received free flights from Wizz as a reward for the effort put in across all the departments.
Mark Rodwell, Chief Executive of Glasgow Prestwick Airport, said: “Wizz have shown they are serious about growing their customer base and route network at Glasgow Prestwick in the two years they have been here.
“The new route to Poznan is yet another indication of this commitment. Poland is a very strong market for us at the present time and we are keen to capitalise by offering new services.”
He added: “To finish second and then first in the Wizz league table in consecutive months is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates even further the strong working relationship between the two companies.”
Jules Matteoni, Manager of Prestwick Handling, was delighted that his team helped the airport to seal top spot in December’s league table.
He said: “This shows our commitment to ensuring that airlines and their passengers have a brilliant experience here, with a focus on ensuring that delays are minimised and that passengers’ journeys are totally stress-free.
“Successful low cost airlines like Wizz have very high standards when it comes to on-time performance and I’m proud of my team for demonstrating how well we look after our airline customers here.”
In addition to handling aircraft for Wizz, Glasgow Prestwick has recently adopted a trial whereby Wizz passengers will be able to check-in four hours before departure, which it is hoped will lead to less queuing and congestion in the terminal during peak periods.

GlasgowMan February 20th, 2008, 06:00 PM £31m Vision for future
LONG queues, delays and claustrophobic hallways most holidaymakers can relax only when they finally pass through security at Glasgow Airport.
Skyhub, the airport's new £31million extension, aims to transform the experience for passengers and reduce waiting times for security checks to five minutes for 95% of all travellers.
The futuristic building, which is due to open on October 21, is taking shape on the site of the walkway between the main terminal and T2.
It will be the most advanced security zone in the UK and is the biggest single investment at the airport since the international pier opened in 1994.
All passengers will be channelled through the two-storey hub, which will have bars, shops and restaurants.
The 4000sq ft area - the size of a football pitch - will be bathed in natural light as the entire front of the building will be covered in translucent cladding.
The revolutionary system, called Kalwall, has been used at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, Orlando Sanford Airport in Florida and Nasa's base at Cape Canaveral. The material is energy efficient, allows daylight to flood into the interior of the building and retains heat.
More than £3m of the total build cost has been spent on a bomb-proof steel cage, which is wrapped under the structure.
A total of 88 pillars have been sunk 120ft into the ground to ensure Skyhub's foundations can withstand any terrorist attack.
Fiona Doherty, head of airport security, said: "It will bring all of our security staff under one roof and ensure all passengers have the same experience.
"The new scanning machines give a far sharper resolution and provide 3D images by taking shots of a bag at two different angles.
"Laptops can be kept in their cases because the image is a lot sharper and items can be identified clearly on screen without rummaging through cases.
"Our staff have a reputation for being warm and personable and extremely professional. Glasgow is the benchmark for UK airport security because we do it so well."
Thousands of passengers will be channelled through the five security points every day. Skyhub will house 10 hi-tech Sky Screen' machines initially and will have capacity for another four.
Marks & Spencer Simply Food, a JD Wetherspoon pub and a New York-style bar and restaurant, Frankie and Benny's, will be based on the ground floor, with the security zone and a new World Duty Free store upstairs, leading to the remodelled main terminal.
THE second phase will start in the autumn and is due to be completed by the end of next year.
The existing three security areas, at international, domestic and the east pier, will be converted into shop space, lounge and leisure facilities.
Mike MacSorley, lead project manager for contractors Balfour Beatty, said: "There will be nothing like this anywhere in the UK.
"Skyhub will have a completely different look from other airports. The site looks fairly small from the road but the floor space is massive.
"Around 300 people will have worked on the project, through its separate phases, by the end of September and we are on target."
Plasma information screens will greet travellers arriving at Skyhub, detailing information on baggage restrictions and banned items.
Figures show there is still confusion among passengers about what can be carried on to planes, with 51% of Scots not aware of liquid restrictions, which have been in force, in some form, since August 2006.
Skips of confiscated bottles of liquids are collected by waste contractors every week.
Gordon Dewar, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "People want to get through security first and relax and do a bit of shopping. That's what happened at Gatwick and it works really well. By freeing up additional space within the terminal we can put the passengers' needs first.
"The safety and security of passengers is extremely important but it doesn't have to be an ordeal."
Reid Architecture, which designed the extension, has blended Skyhub into Sir Basil Spence's barrel-vaulted roof of the main terminal.
The top of the building has been designed to allow commercial office space to be added at a later date.
The Callwall canvas blocks on the front of the building can display projected messages. Airport bosses are considering showcasing a countdown to the Commonwealth Games.

State-of-the-art bid to ensure our safety
A PETROL-driven chainsaw, a samurai sword and a holdall full of live fish.
These are just some of the items that passengers have tried to breeze past security and carry on to flights at Glasgow over the years.
The new £31million Skyhub extension will use Atix scanners which take two images of every bag or item, from the side and above.
Staff are only permitted to study the images for 20 minutes at a time, to ensure maximum concentration levels, before being switched to other duties.
Waiting times are closely monitored on an hourly basis by identifying individuals in queues and timing how long it takes them to pass through security.
Fiona Doherty, head of security, said: "Some of the technology that is being trialled now is futuristic stuff.
"Our staff have been down to Heathrow and Gatwick to train people down there because we are ahead of the game. Everything we do is geared towards making passengers as comfortable as possible."
GlasgowMan March 2nd, 2008, 04:43 PM FlyGlasgow.net Welcomes Decision on M74 Expansion
FlyGlasgow.net has welcomed today's decision to give the final go-ahead to the M74 motorway expansion.
The completion of the M74s missing link between Rutherglen in South East Glasgow and the Kingston Bridge in the Centre of Glasgow will not only ease congestion on the M8 north of the city, it will also cut driving times from South Glasgow, the South of Scotland and England to Glasgow International Airport by as much as 40 minutes.
Work on completing Glasgow's Motorway network will commence in May of this year and should be completed by 2011, in plenty of time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Completing the M74 will come at a cost of £445m.
Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell said the scheme was tremendous news for Glasgow while Business Leaders said the motorway would bring "significant economical benefits to Glasgow".

GlasgowMan March 19th, 2008, 05:07 PM Terminal 1 Forecourt Re-opens after Terror Attack
Passengers will be able to be picked up and dropped off outside the Glasgow Airport terminal building from tomorrow for the first time since last summer's terror attack.
A new £150,000 pick-up and drop-off zone will end the long walk, often with luggage, that passengers currently face from St Andrew's Drive.
Passengers will be able to wait in the new barrier zone, directly opposite the terminal building, for up to 10 minutes without charge.
The zone will be able to accommodate up to 60 cars at one time, said airport operator BAA.
A total of 160 parking bays in the ground floor of the airport's multi-storey car park have been stripped out to make way for the facility.
It is part of a £2million plan to improve passenger access to and from the airport.
This includes a £500,000 refurbishment of the St Andrew's Drive site, which took over as the main drop-off area after the June 30 attack.
A BAA spokesman said St Andrew's Drive would remain as a secondary drop-off point, to be used at peak times.
But he warned people waiting longer than 10 minutes should still use the airport's short-stay car parks.
Parking wardens would hand out £20 fines to anyone caught abusing the new zone, he said.
Gordon Dewar, managing director of Glasgow International Airport, said: "The drop-off zone on St Andrew's Drive has served us well since the attack, and we have invested heavily to improve passenger facilities along this route.
"However, we fully understand passengers want to pick up and drop off as close to the terminal as security constraints allow.
"Obviously, following the events of 30 June, we are not in a position to allow private vehicles on the forecourt, because of security concerns and capacity constraints.
"However, we have listened carefully to feedback from our passengers over the last few weeks and months, and have taken their views into account in our re-design of our vehicle access arrangements."
The new pick-up and drop-off zone has four designated spaces for people with reduced mobility, and special help points have also been set up.
The facility will be open from 4.30am tomorrow.
Meanwhile, a £1.5m project to enhance airport security and redesign the airport forecourt is also under way.
The entire forecourt will be resurfaced, with separate lanes created for buses and taxis, as well as wider pavements.
Around £16m has been committed this year to the Skyhub project, which will see all passengers flying from the same terminal, tighter security and new bars, shops and restaurants.

GlasgowMan March 24th, 2008, 05:16 PM Plans lodged for airport train station

TRANSPORT bosses have submitted plans to create a train station at Glasgow Airport ahead of a £210million rail link.
An application to build two platforms yards from the main terminal has now been lodged with Renfrewshire Council.
It's understood BAA Scotland have agreed to pay for a walkway to take passengers from the station into the heart of the airport.
Four trains an hour will run between Glasgow Airport and Glasgow Central stations once the long-awaited link is completed in 2011.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport have applied for prior approval for the station to ensure the project can be delivered on time.
The station is expected to be built after a viaduct linking the proposed route over the M8 motorway is finished.
The journey from Glasgow city centre will take 16 minutes, making one brief stop at Paisley Gilmour Street.
Councillor Alistair Watson, chairman of SPT, said: "Once the M74 extension, Glasgow Airport Rail Link and the Crossrail projects are built, the airport will have the best surface access of any in the UK.
"Every major international city has an airport rail link and Glasgow should be no different."
The viaduct will run over the M8, across the St James' playing fields in Paisley and the Murray Business Area and join the main line to the east of St James' Station.
The rail link will result in 5.4miles of existing track being upgraded between Shields Junction and Paisley Gilmour Street station, as well as 1.2miles of track being laid between Paisley St James Station and the airport.
Studies show around 95% of passengers travel to the airport by road.
Industry experts estimate the route will create around 650 new jobs in Glasgow and Renfrewshire in the next 10 years, and 700 jobs in Paisley town centre by 2015.

FlyGlasgow Welcome Competition Commission Report on BAA’s Monopoly
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x281/flyglasgow/logoflyglasgow.gif
BAA’s ownership of Glasgow International Airport could at long last be brought to an end by the Competition Commission.
BAA currently own seven airports in the United Kingdom, a monopoly on British aviation. It is expected the Competition Commission will force BAA to sell two airports; with Glasgow International and London Gatwick favoured to be sold.
For years now BAA have allows passenger growth at Scotland’s busiest international airport to stagnate and have held Glasgow International Airport back from reaching its full potential as a major European Airport.
Paul Charles, of Virgin Atlantic Airways, said: "It seems the Competition Commission has seen the light. It supports the views of every airline and every passenger, that there is no competition at our major airports."
Andy Harrison, easyjet’s Chief Executive said: “We welcome the Competition Commission’s initial report as a major step in the right direction. It raises the right questions and the UK’s air passengers deserve answers which put their interests first. The combination of awful service, massive price increases and antiquated infrastructure makes it obvious to millions of passengers that the UK’s major airports are a shameful mess. This is due to a combination of poor airport regulation, an airport operator that is unresponsive to the needs of its major customers, poor long-term planning of infrastructure requirements, and BAA’s monopoly control of London and Scottish airports.”
Rick Green, chief executive of Glasgow based airline flyglobespan said: “Should the commission come to the conclusion that one of them should be under independent ownership, it would be hard to argue how that could be anything but a benefit to the Scottish traveller."
Ryanair’s Peter Sherrard commented “Ryanair welcomes the Competition Commission’s report into its emerging thinking. We fully support the Competition Commission’s view that BAA’s monopoly ownership of Glasgow International and Edinburgh airports has adversely affected competition.
Mike Rutter, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer said: “Over the last year, Flybe have flown more than 75,000 flights from BAA/Ferrovial owned airports, so we are in a very good position to be able to comment on their lack of performance. It’s high time the sell-off began and in a spirit of cooperation, can we suggest they begin by disposing of Southampton, London Gatwick and Glasgow”.
EasyJet Launches New Portuguese Route from Glasgow
http://www.flyglasgow.net/Quickstart/ImageLib/logo_ezy.gif
Low-fares airline easyJet has launched its latest new route from Glasgow International Airport, this time to the city of Faro in the South of Portugal, the gateway to the Algarve.
Flights from Glasgow to Faro will operate thrice-weekly with flights departing Glasgow International every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
EasyJet expects that it will carry 16,000 passengers between Glasgow and Faro in the route's first year.
David Osborne, the airline's UK commercial manager, said: "This direct route to Faro has already proven a popular choice and will offer all Scots the opportunity to experience the glorious Algarve from their local airport.
"Forward bookings for the route have been very strong, which further proves the demand for direct low-cost flights from Glasgow to the sun."
Flights from Glasgow International to Alicante, Belfast, Berlin, Bristol, Faro, Geneva, Ibiza, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, Malaga, Palma and Paris Charles de Gaul can be booked online now at www.easyjet.com.

GlasgowMan July 16th, 2008, 06:59 PM 100 days till Skyhub opens for business
The latest phase of Glasgow International Airports expansion plan, Skyhub, is just 100 days away from opening to passengers for the first time. The development will open on October 21 and will double the size of Terminal 1.
The new extension to Terminal 1, located to the east of the existing terminal is also bomb proof. The building has 88 giant pillars sank 120 feet into the ground to secure the foundations against any future terrorist attacks. The building is also encased in a steel case which will protect passengers and staff in the event of a bomb or explosion.
Once complete, Glasgow International Airport will be home to the UK's most advanced security screening area. Skyhub security will house 10 x-ray screening channels for checking passengers and their luggage.
There will also be a huge number of new shops and bars opening including the UK's largest Duty Free store and high-street brands such as Starbucks, Sunglass Hut, Hugh Boss, JD Wetherspoon and Frankie and Bennys.
On the ground floor of the new development will be a new and much larger arrivals hall for domestic passengers.
Managing director Gordon Dewar said: The opening of Skyhub, now less than 100 days away, promises a better airport experience for passengers at Glasgow International Airport, with fast, efficient security screening, more space to relax and a wider choice of bars, restaurants and shops.
Skyhub is the first of many major investments planned at Glasgow International Airport, including the new rail link and a new western pier. By 2014, when Glasgow hosts the Commonwealth Games, the airport will be substantially transformed, boasting world class surface access links and a modern, welcoming environment.

GlasgowMan August 10th, 2008, 06:09 PM BAA likely to be forced into sale of Glasgow International Airport
The Competition Commission is set to recommend the break-up of the airports group BAA this month. The company is likely to be forced into selling two of their seven UK airports, with Glasgow International and London Gatwick being the most likely to be sold.
Airlines such as Easyjet, Emirates, FlyBe, FlyGlobespan, Ryanair, ThomsonFly and Virgin Atlantic have all been pushing for a break-up of BAA. They complain that it operates a monopoly in Scotland, resulting in poor service and unfair charges at Glasgow International Airport.
The airlines also claim that, by squeezing airport capacity, BAA can drive up charges and has little incentive to invest in new infrastructure; this is evident at Glasgow International Airport were passenger numbers are exceeding terminal capacity.
:banana::banana::cheers:
GlasgowMan August 13th, 2008, 03:53 PM Glasgow International Airport set for new owners and huge bost in flights
Reports say Spanish infrastructure giant Ferrovial is looking at plans to put the airport on the market this month in a bid to avoid a full-scale break-up of the company being imposed by UK watchdogs.
Any sale would effectively smash Ferrovial's near monopoly in Scotland: the company's subsidiary BAA, the former British Airports Authority, owns Glasgow International, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports and controls more than three-quarters of the Scottish market.
Airlines argue competition between Glasgow International and Edinburgh airports could bring down fares and have urged competition authorities to force BAA to sell one or the other.
Earlier this year, the Competition Commission warned the BAA monopoly in both Scotland and the south-east of England may be hurting passengers.
Yesterday, media reports suggested the commission was now sure BAA's control of seven British airports, including London's Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow, was harmful to the market.
Unnamed legal sources have been cited saying the next round of findings would be an important step towards an order for BAA to sell an airport in Scotland and an airport in England.
Rival airport operators are said to be have been consulted by the commission on what wider ownership would do for the industry.
The commission, however, is not expected to make its full findings public until later this month.
Charlie Gordon, a Glasgow Labour MSP, has been calling for BAA to be broken up in Scotland for years. He said: "I'd love to see some divestment in Scotland."
A spokesman for BAA said it would only make a statement after the commission made its announcement.
Budget airlines easyjet, FlyGlobespan, Ryanair and FlyBe have all stated that if charges at Glasgow International, currently one of the most expensive airports in the United Kingdom, were lowered they would be in a position to offer significantly more cheap flights from the airport to Europe.

http://images.newsquest.co.uk/image.php?id=1061791&type=full http://images.newsquest.co.uk/image.php?id=1061790&type=full
GLASGOW International Airport could have a price tag of more than £1billion if it is sold off.
BAA bosses were left furious today after the Competition Commission signalled the break up of its UK empire and recommended it lose control of Glasgow International and a London airport.
Airport bosses said it was "business as usual" at the airports today but made plain their intention to fight the ruling during the consultation period.
The Competition Commission also said Spanish-owned BAA should give up two of its three of its London airports - Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

I would guess maybe the CC have a say with that as its them who have decided BAA must be broken up, and rightly so, IMO.
Do you know if the CC will have a say in who buys the airport or will it be a case of highest bidder?

I'm not sure how it would all work - perhasp it is the DoT and the CAA that would have to oversea any tender for sales process.

I would imagine all would have some say in what goes on.
For example, the CC couldn’t allow the Manchester Airport Group to buy both Glasgow International and London Gatwick. That would simply breakup BAA’s monopoly but give MAG a monopoly.
Only time will tell but I’m sure the airports that get sold, London Gatwick, Glasgow International and possibly even Stansted will have a much better future without BAA in charge.

MAG said today that they could buy either of the Scotish airports through their own means (based on MAGs estimates of the value of the two airports) but that they would most likely need to go into partnership to cover the cost of one of the London airports.

I suspect MAG’s valuation of the airports is much lower than what BAA will be looking for...
I also seen that MAG said they have no interest in buying Edinburgh if that airport becomes available. Although, in Scotland it’s pretty much guaranteed that Glasgow International will be the airport to be sold. BAA will keep Edinburgh.
The only question marks left as to what airport might, or might not, be sold is with Stansted. I think it’s a certainty Gatwick will be sold.

That would be of BAA's own choosing if it happened; the CC will not deliver it's final report (this is an interim statement for review and comment by the industry) until early in 2009. The Government (DoT) would then have to come to a decision as to how to proceed. It would probably be in the 2010/2011 timeframe before any change of ownership was completed.

Glasgow Prestwick is much smaller than Glasgow International but it still handles a good number of international traffic, around 2.5million passengers each year. Glasgow Prestwick has direct flights to 42 destinations, 37 of them are international.
The airport also handles a huge number of freight, I believe Prestwick gets more 747 cargo flights than any other UK airport.

British Airways increase flights to London City Airport
23 September 2008
British Airways will increase their flights between Glasgow International and London City from late October.
Currently, British Airways offer up to four departures a day on their Glasgow International to London City route, but from the 28th of October, this will be increased to five daily flights.

The first phase of a £31million extension to Glasgow Airport's terminal opened to passengers today.
A major new ground floor arrivals hall for UK domestic flights was the first part of the project to be unveiled.
Renfrewshire Council Leader Derek Mackay greeted the first arriving domestic passengers through the new terminal extension, arriving from Belfast at 7.20am.
A bar and restaurant was also opened and other retail outlets will open soon in the new sky hub terminal.
The second phase of the development, a £12m security area, will come into operation next week, replacing the three existing search areas.
From next Tuesday all departing passengers will be routed through the central search area on the terminal's first floor.
The first passenger to arrive in a gleaming new arrivals hall was David Gordon, 30, from Belfast.
The procurement manager who travels to Glasgow every week on business was greeted by airport officials and Councillor Mackay who presented him with a bottle of champagne.
He said: "It's beautiful. I think a facelift for the airport is long overdue for such a big city. Glasgow needs an airport to match this cosmopolitan city."
Another passenger from the first flight to arrive from Belfast, Marguerite Gibney, 41, from Belfast said: "It's bigger, brighter than before and the new pub is very nice."
Passengers using Terminal 2 at the airport will also benefit as they will not have to go outside to get to their check-in area. Roy McCubbin 46, from Carluke, who was flying to Paris, said: "It's great to be able to stay within the airport terminal to get to T2."
Russ Harris, 43, was waiting for a customer to arrive for a meeting. He said: "It's a lot more welcoming, a lot less cluttered and it feels fresh. It's also more secure for the baggage area as before there weren't any doors there."
Derek Mackay, leader of Renfrewshire Council said: "The last time I was here I was cutting the soil. "The airport is a key part of Scotland's economy. It's fantastic to see it developing in this way. "I hope it symbolises a very bright future for the airport."
Managing director of Glasgow airport Amanda McMillan said: "The airport has been growing and this is a natural progression. "It gives us a great new space for arriving passengers and gives us all the opportunity to meet and greet and move more freely through the building. "I think it's fantastic. It's crisp, clean and airy. It's just a different class and when we open the new security area next week that will be the icing on the cake."
A third phase, due to start this month, will see the existing terminal upgraded and refurbished to provide additional seating, new fashion stores and catering facilities.

Perfectly safe. The runway at Prestwick is very long. The photo makes it look shorter than it is so exaggerates it looking uneven. Also very few airports in the world have completely flat, even runways. The runway at Edinburgh, for example, goes up a slight hill.
GlasgowMan October 30th, 2008, 06:48 PM Glasgow Prestwick reveal plans for major airport expansion
30 October 2008
Glasgow Prestwick Airport is set for huge expansion as it bids for a bold future.
Bosses plan to build a new terminal, launch transatlantic flights and more than double passenger numbers.
The radical growth is outlined in a draft master plan for the airport’s future, which FlyGlasgow can reveal.
Airport bosses plan to create over 2000 new jobs and predict Glasgow Prestwick will be handling 12 million passengers per year in the near future.
Chief Executive Mark Rodwell admitted: “There is no doubt that the aviation industry is currently facing a challenging time with volatile fuel prices and unfavorable economic conditions.
“But the unique thing about this industry is that it always bounces back stronger than before.
“We’ve seen it with SARS and September 11 and it will happen again here.
“Our growth predictions are based on the greater of three possible scenarios and it assumes that a number of business opportunities come to fruition, as well as new developments in the domestic, European and long haul markets.”
Mr Rodwell revealed flights across the Atlantic could be leaving Glasgow Prestwick “within a few years”.
And work has already begun on a £1.7 million development of the existing departure lounge, which should be finished by April 2009.
Mr Rodwell added: “We’re not in a position yet to build a new terminal but at some stage we will.
“Our growth will be taken in steps and we have to be flexible but we’re already studying designs for a terminal.”
Bosses at Glasgow Prestwick are also expecting a boom in freight traffic – rising at an average of 4 per cent each year.
The bold master plan comes hot on the heels of Ryanair launching another three routes from Glasgow Prestwick to Tenerife, Malaga and Faro as well as Aer Arann who have launched a new daily flight to Cork.

GlasgowMan December 29th, 2009, 12:35 AM Glasgow International Airport plans expansion
28 December 2009
Glasgow airport has announced a £25m expansion plan to improve facilities for passengers and traffic access to the site over the next two years.
Planned developments include improving the airport road system, a new food court, a new runway lighting system and upgrades to the airfield taxiway.
The airport will invest £12m in 2010, followed by a further £13m in 2011.
By 2014, when Glasgow hosts the Commonwealth Games, the airport expects to spend between £85m and £100m.
The airport's main passenger lounge, skylounge, will also be refurbished along with improvements to the internal layouts of the main terminal building in an effort to create "a more seamless passenger journey through the airport".
The airport is also contributing £1m towards the cost of the M74 extension which, it is hoped, will reduce journey times to and from the transport hub.
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: "These improvements will deliver a better passenger experience, provide enhanced terminal facilities, and improve the efficiency of our taxiway and runway infrastructure, which are essential for the smooth operation of the airport.
"This is a significant investment in the future of Glasgow Airport, and underlines our commitment to grow the airport and deliver a better customer experience for our passengers."
This is the latest in a series of high profile investments at Glasgow Airport.
Last year, it opened a £31m terminal extension - the biggest single investment for more than a decade.
The skyhub extension includes a new security search area, arrivals hall, additional seating capacity, and a wider choice of bars, shops and restaurants.
'Significant investment'
Councillor Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council said: "The importance of the airport to the local economy cannot be overestimated.
"Investment in improving Glasgow Airport is an investment in jobs in Glasgow and the West of Scotland."
Renfrewshire Council Leader Derek Mackay said: "This programme of work will enhance access and the customer experience and we welcome such a significant investment particularly in the current economic circumstances."
Ms McMillan also confirmed that the airport was in discussion with new and existing airlines in a bid to secure several new routes for 2010, and was working to fill the capacity lost by the collapse of Globespan.
More than a third of the capacity has been replaced by existing carriers at Glasgow, including easyJet, Thomas Cook, Thomson and Virgin Atlantic.
A major announcement on further additional capacity is expected in the next few days.

Aer Arann switch Donegal flights from Glasgow Prestwick to Glasgow International
23 February 2010
Aer Arann has revealed it will switch its Donegal flight from Glasgow Prestwick Airport to Glasgow International Airport.
The airline launched flights from Glasgow Prestwick to Donegal in 2006, with three flights per week to the Irish destination. Since its launch the route has continued to perform well and in 2007 Aer Arann increased flights to four weekly.
From 28 March 2010 the service will operate four days per week, direct from Glasgow International Airport, replacing the current Glasgow Prestwick route. Flights are on sale now with fares starting from £37 one way including taxes.
Donegal Airport opens up the North-West of Ireland for the leisure and business traveler. Located at Carrickfinn, Kincasslagh, the airport is approximately 15 minutes drive from Dungloe and Gweedore, 45 minutes from Letterkenny and 1 hour from Donegal Town.
Welcoming the new route Aer Arann Corporate Affairs Director Andrew Kelly said: “Donegal and Glasgow have a strong connection and we are responding to popular customer demand by introducing this new link. The Donegal service will further enhance our presence at the airport following the announcement of our Cork-Glasgow International route under the Aer Lingus Regional franchise. We look forward to welcoming both existing and new passengers on board all of our services in the coming weeks and months”.
Scott Taylor, Chief Executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, added: "The new service from Donegal has a clear fit with friends and family hopping between Donegal and Glasgow, and with events like the World Irish Dancing championships taking place in the city this year, it’s a perfect opportunity to bring the whole family to experience a major event celebrating the cultural links between the Celts.

Ryanair to build new maintenance hangar at Glasgow Prestwick
10 February 2010
Ryanair, Glasgow’s largest airline, today (10 February 2010) announced that it will build a second maintenance hangar at Glasgow Prestwick Airport at a cost of £8 million, which will create 200 new engineering jobs, increasing the total jobs sustained by Ryanair in Glasgow to over 2,400.
The facility, which is due to open in October 2010, was announced at Glasgow Prestwick Airport by Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond and Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary.

Labour vows to put Glasgow International Airport Rail Link back on track
28 March 2010
Labour will revive the Glasgow International Airport Rail Link (GARL) project if it wins next year’s Scottish election.
The plan, which will be included in the party’s manifesto for the Holyrood election, is one of a series of populist measures designed to wrest power from Alex Salmond.
The SNP’s decision to drop the £170m GARL scheme linking the airport to Glasgow and Paisley was a factor in the party’s defeat by Labour in last year’s Glasgow North East by-election.
While the SNP has said the rail link would provide minimal benefit to the Scottish economy and have virtually no impact on cutting traffic or greenhouse gas emissions, senior Labour figures accused the SNP of having an “anti-Glasgow agenda”.
Labour strategists believe resurrecting the scheme would be a vote winner in its traditional west of Scotland heartland.
“This will mean better connectivity for the business community. Getting people on to trains rather than buses also makes sense from an environmental point of view,” said Johann Lamont, Scottish Labour’s deputy leader.
“It’s also about creating jobs and the community regeneration that goes alongside it.
“In tough times abandoning a key project which would offer so many opportunities would be a loss.”
The move has been welcomed by business leaders, who said they were astonished by the SNP’s decision to withdraw support for the project.
“We believe this scheme should not have been abandoned by the Scottish government and very much welcome Labour’s commitment to restore the rail link to Glasgow airport,” said Iain McMillan, director of CBI Scotland.
“It’s a ridiculous position that we do not have a rail link into Glasgow International Airport. The Glasgow rail link would provide a significant boost to Scotland’s economy.”
