In this thread I will introduce all the major "smaller" cities of Nigeria´s Southern and Central parts to the forum. I will start with the city of JOS IN PLATEAU STATE. Jos has a temperate climate (over 1500m above sea level) which used to make it a "refuge" for the British during colonial times. Nowadays Jos is a place for tourism because of its nice scenery. :)

THIS IS JOS AND ITS SCENERY

Map for location:

Jos is a city, situated high on the Jos Plateau in Nigeria's middle belt (Lat:9°56' Long:8°53'). It is the administrative capital of Plateau State.

City Facts

Jos has a population of around 1,000,000 people. Jos North, Jos South and Jos East have a combined population density of 391 persons per sq. km making them the most densely populated parts of Plateau State.

With an altitude (over 1500m) above sea level, it enjoys a more temperate climate than much of the rest of Nigeria (average monthly temperatures range from 20° to 25° C). These cooler temperatures have meant that from colonial times until present day, Jos is a favourite holiday location for both tourists and expatriates based in Nigeria. Situated almost at the geographical centre of Nigeria and about 288km. from Abuja, the nation's capital, Jos is linked by road, rail and air to the rest of the country.
[edit]

History

The earliest known Nigerians were the Nok people (around 3000BC), skilled artisans from around the Jos area who mysteriously vanished in the late first millennia.

Jos was established in 1915 at the site of the village Geash. It grew rapidly after the British discovered vast tin deposits in the vicinity. Both tin and columbite were extensively mined in the area up until the 1960s. It was transported by railway to both Port Harcourt and Lagos on the coast where it was exported. Jos is still often referred to as "Tin City". In 1967 it was made capital of Benue-Plateau State, becoming the capital of the new Plateau State in 1975.

Jos has become an important national administrative and commercial centre. Tin mining has led to the influx of migrants, mostly Hausas, Igbos, Yorubas and Europeans who constitute more than half of the population of Jos. This "melting pot" of race, tribe and religion makes Jos one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Nigeria. For this reason, Plateau State is known in Nigeria as the "home of peace and tourism".

Features

The city is home to the University of Jos (founded in 1975), St Luke's cathedral, an airport and railway station. Jos is served by several teaching hospitals including ECWA Evangel Hospital and Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), a Federal Government-funded referral hospital.

The National Museum in Jos was founded in 1952, and is recognised as one of the best in the country. It is well known for its archeology and The Pottery Hall has an exceptional collection of finely crafted pottery from all over Nigeria. The museum boasts some fine specimens of Nok terracotta heads and artifacts dating from between 500 BC to 200 AD. It also incorporates the Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture with life-size replicas of a variety of buildings, from the walls of Kano and the Mosque at Zaria to a Tiv village. Articles of interest from colonial times relating to the railway and tin mining can also be found on display. A School for Museum Technicians is attached to the museum, established with the help of UNESCO. The Jos Museum is also located beside the zoo.

Jos has two golf courses, Rayfield and Plateau, plus a polo club, a stadium and other sports/entertainment offerings. Hillcrest School, an international British school, is also located in Jos. The school has been running for more than fifty years (since 1942) and contains a large international student population.

The Jos Wildlife Park is another attraction. It covers roughly 8 sq. kilometers of savannah bush. Visitors are able to see animals ranging from lions to pythons to pygmy hippopotami.

Other local enterprises include food processing, beer brewing, and the manufacture of cosmetics, soap, rope, jute bags, and furniture. Heavy industry produces cement and asbestos cement, crushed stone, rolled steel, and tire retreads. Jos also is a centre for the construction industry and has several printing and publishing firms. The Jos-Bukuru dam and reservoir on the Shen River provide water for the city's industries.

Jos Airport situated at Heipang and has a long enough runway for the jet airlines. The airport is served at the moment by the scheduled domestic flights of private airlines including Kabo air, EAS, Chanchangi, ALBARKA airlines, Belleview Airlines which operate on daily basis to Abuja, Kano and Lagos. Virgin Nigeria will soon fly to Jos.

Jos is a great base for exploring the beauty of Plateau State. The Shere Hills, seen to the east of Jos, offer a prime view of the city below. Assop Falls is a small waterfall which makes a pleasant picnic spot on a drive from Jos to Abuja. Riyom Rock is a dramatic and photogenic pile of rocks balanced precariously on top of one another, with one resembling a clown's hat, observable from the main Jos-Akwanga road. Kura Falls is a refreshing area for walks and picnics, with scenery reminiscent of the Scottish highlands.

Luham Rock. Luham Rock is located in Tunkus, the capital of Mikang Local Government Area. Luham in the language of the local tribe of Montol means house of water, or simply put, a source of water. The story behind this rock is that back in the dark ages where people had to protect themselves, the local people had to take cover in rocks and mountains. The Montol people were fortunate to have discovered this mountain that not only offered them protection, but it also provided them with the most important source of sustenance, water.

Pandam Game Reserve. This game reserve provides the tourist with what can be expected in a nature preserve of its kind. The park is home to very many types of animals found in the region. In its waters are Hippopotamus, Crocodiles and snakes of all types. Since there's no mass tourism and the park's environment is still pristine, the wildlife are unspoiled by human contact

Located 25 kilometers from Jos along the Jos-Akwanga road is a spectacular rock formation called the Riyom Rock, so called because it is located in the Riyom Town. Na Riyom is also known for many other rock formations

Kwi Conical Hill-Riyom. Kwi Conical Hill is a picturesque sight. The hill is very inviting sight to the daredevils who would love the challenge of heights. On top of this hill is an almost flat land. It is unfortunate that it is not very big land for it would be a wonderful place to locate another hilltop hotel.

Jos wildlife park is located 4 km from the state capital Jos and offers a variety of animal species - buffaloes, lion, leopards, pigmy hippopotami, baboons, monkeys, derby elands, pythons, crocodiles, chimpanzees, jackals and a host of other animals. For lovers of wildlife, you are afforded contact with the animals at close range. A stunning panoramic view of Jos can be seen from the park.

Wase rock located some 216 kilometers South-East of Jos in Wase Town is a beautiful, massive dome-shaped inselberg and stands at a staggering height 450 meters. According to available records, it is one of the only five breeding places for the Rossy (White pelican birds in Africa). The government now protects about 321 acres of land around the rock as a bird sanctuary and for wildlife development.

How was services in the city?
Electricity, Water, etc...?

depends on which part of the city you are talking about? there are shanty towns with little facilities as well as posh areas and business districts with excellent facilities. The rest is in between.

Generally, during the rainy season late apr- aug, electricty may be out during heavy rains and thunderstorms( from 1-2 hrs , but can be upto 1 day if some damage is done).

Water, totally depends on area u are living in.

telephone- landlines OK. mobiles... cant say.

education- a few european and american schools... and may be 4-5 good local schools. rest are average.

climate- ecxellent , one of the most beautiful climates in the world.

sanitation- depends on region... good in posh areas and posh business districts, medium to poor in the rest.

security- few robberies and snatchings but lots of scams.

what else? may you can ask particularly?

NOTE: These figures are quite old( some 9 yrs ago). And things might have changed significantly by now.

Tbite, great photos of Calabar :)

I got some more information on that cable car that was completed a year ago.

Africa´s longest cable car has finally been completed...WATCH VIDEO!!!
Watch the video about Africa´s longest cable car that takes you on the moutain top of a beautifully new resort in Nigeria. The views are stunning, it is already enough when you watch the first two and the last two minutes of the video...but it is well worth it! Don´t miss it

The new cable car has been constructed in Cross Rivers state (near the town of Calabar) where the new Free Trade Zones and the new Business Resort Tinapa City are under construction. The governor Donald Duke is simply great and not a mere chatterbox!

Here is the link to the video (use the broadband version)

Wow Ibadan University, right ?? I know that Ibadan is the 2nd biggest city in Nigeria , after Lagos. But some ppl said Ibadan is the largest because of the metro area. Nigerian traditional dress rocckksss !!!!! Very colourful and gorgeous ! I am a kind of adventure- so if I visit Nigeria, I will stay only 2 or 3 days in big cities like Lagos/Ibadan, then another 4 or 5 days in secondary towns like Kano/Port Harcourt, then at least a week in the countryside !

Now with Emirates , connection to Nigeria is getting very easy-- $ 800 return to Murtala Mohammad Airport via Dubai !

Anyone has pictures of Nigerian food ?
