Mwafrika August 31st, 2006, 12:22 AM Kisumu is a port city in western Kenya at 1,131 m (3,710 ft), with a population of 355,024 (1999 census). It is the third largest city in Kenya, the principal city of western Kenya, the capital of Nyanza Province and the headquarters of Kisumu District. It has no municipal charter. It is the largest city in Nyanza Province and second most important city after Kampala in the greater Lake Victoria basin.

Kenguy May 28th, 2007, 08:04 PM Great pics of an upcoming city. Though I feel something should be done to improve the skyline (same goes for Mombasa).
I'll try and find pictures for the new 15 storey provincial headquarters building in the city.
Other recent major projects:
1.) Nakumatt city mall:- Has a Nakumatt superstore (one of kenyas largest stores), bowling alley, and a big movie theatre as the main tenants. Though the pics arent easy to get.
2.) United Mall: Has the Uchumi Hypermarket as the main tenant, Also has a cinema hall and other stores.

ernestombayo7 May 29th, 2007, 09:44 AM Thanks for this thread Mwafrika.I think too much development was focused on Nairobi and the smaller cities were left behind.Kisumu is also rising fast having only being declared a city less than 7 yrs ago.It has a long way to go ut atleast major developments are slated for the city eg Upgrading the Kisumu Airport to and International Airport.
But my opinion is,once the City has reached acceptable levels, the Bicycle taxis should be be removed from the Town center. They are always a danger to passengers and atleast one person gets hit by a vehicle everyday. They are also not efficient, rather have a large matatu carry 18 passengers than 18 bicycles carry one passnger each.Plus i think they are an eye sore.not a mark of a Metroplitan city.
Needless to say i love Kisumu, good smooth roads and fresh food.
acreed79 May 29th, 2007, 05:35 PM hey earnestombayo you are right about the bicycle taxis, they are the most inefficient form of transport. Unfortunately the NGOs and most donor organizations push for their existence as a form of poverty eradication. The city council is experimenting with bicycle only tracks, but this is not the answer. I think an organized transit authority is the answer to the traffic problems in Kenyan cities and towns.

I also feel the same way about almost everything gravitating around Nairobi. But its only a matter of time before this changes.
The cost of living and doing business in Nairobi is rising and this will make companies look for alternative locations for their businesses. So far, Kisumu was identified as the principal city for the lake victoria region (the most densely populated region in East Africa). This means all administrative and business activities regarding the lake basin in Kenya, uganda and Tanzania will have their headquarters in Kisumu.(and I hope this translates to more office space requirements and therefore more office towers, not to mention housing.
Parliament is about to pass legislation making the city of Mombasa into a free port. when you add this to the fact that it is the busiest and fastest growing port on the eastern coast of Africa north of Durban, it will make more business (cost) sense to establish business headquarters in Mombasa compared to Nairobi...and by extention more towers and other developments.
ernestombayo7 May 30th, 2007, 02:08 PM nice foresight Kenguy,a free port would definately do it for Mombasa.I am studying in malaysia and Langkawi Islands on the west coast of Malaysia is a free port island. It receives tonnes of tourists every year coz of its cheap non taxed goods. The main sort after commodity obviously being Alcohol(a can of beer:carlsber, heinekn etc go for only 20kshs each 1 US dollar = 67 kshs so do the maths in dollars you will see why tourists flock to this place!).
What happened to the Arabian Investor who wanted to do a 1 Trillion kshs project in Lamu?Building an international airport, new highways, building a harbour free port etc?Last time i checked the government was reviewing the proposal.

The Lamu project is still being considered, though I haven't heard about plans to start construction any time soon. There just too many issues to consider. Lamu is a world heritage site and thus cannot be interfered with in any way so as to maintain its historical relevance.
The second issue is that it was to serve as a port for landlocked Ethiopia and southern sudan. The logistics of building new highways and railways makes the idea of connecting existing Railways and roads to the new ones more economical than building separate new networks leading to Lamu. That means the Imports/ exports from this countries will have to use Mombasa first before they consider Lamu.
The Lamu project will come when the need for a totally new port comes about to handle the congestion at Mombasa. Right now the government wants to start building a new highway from Isiolo to Ethiopia starting next year.

Kenya: New Firm to Run Kisumu Ethanol Plant
The East African (Nairobi)
22 May 2007
Posted to the web 22 May 2007
Nairobi
The Kisumu Ethanol Plant is now to be run by a new subsidiary of its majority owner Canada's Energem Resources Inc. The subsidiary, Energem Biofuels, will be charged with boosting production.
Energem Resources holds a 55 per cent stake in the Kisumu Ethanol Plant.Previously, the plant fell under Energem's logistics and supply division. Placing of the Kisumu facility under the new subsidiary is part of a reorientation, Energem says, that will see the Canadian firm focus its business on the midstream oil and gas infrastructure and biofuels sectors.
The reorganisation will also optimise the firm's business outlook and help raise its market value. Currently, the company's shares at the Toronto Stock Exchange are undervalued.
"The review examined the options available to the company for a restructuring, repackaging and relaunch of Energem in a form that would be more functionally effective, with respect to unlocking value in the equity markets," Energem said in a statement last week.
"The company believes that its core sectors have enormous potential and scalability across Africa," it added.
Two months ago, Energem announced that the Kisumu plant had resumed full capacity production following a closure in December 2006. Energem had shut down the plant to carry out modifications and maintenance in light of the limited availability of molasses feedstock at the time.
Production was restarted in the third week of January, picking up to the full capacity - 60,000 litres of potable alcohol per day - by February.
The bulk of the alcohol is sold to secondary manufacturers in the Kenyan market, although Kep has started exporting to Uganda and Rwanda.
According to Energem, the prices of potable alcohol recorded this year are better than last year's, while molasses feedstock availability may improve following good rains in western Kenya's sugar growing region.
Last week, Energem said the enhanced performance of its Kisumu facility had confirmed projections that the plant could serve as the linchpin of its bio-products line on the continent.
The imminent positioning of the Kisumu plant as a major biofuels producer in the region comes at a time when interest in clean fuels has risen globally.
Proponents of biofuels say that their increased usage would lead to a lower rate of global warming, as they release lower quantities of greenhouse gases. This argument has seen the European Union set a target of using biofuels in 10 per cent of its cars by 2020, creating a large potential market for the fuels.
However, some experts have cautioned that widespread adoption of biofuels could have far-reaching effects on global food security as agricultural areas are turned into fuel sources. Adoption of biofuels could also speed up global warming as rainforests, especially in regions such as South America and Central Africa, are cleared to make way for fuel crops. Rainforests mop up greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide...

Kisumu Millennium City Project (UN-HABITAT 1st Millenium City)
UN-HABITAT officials present outlined the broad five-year development strategy for Kisumu. The outline took note of the fact that the challenge was to translate the vision into a reality adding that an MDG- based plan would provide the focus to achieve this and that the major hurdles in Kisumu include water and sanitation.
The agency said that Kisumu would be an ideal location to launch the Millennium Cities initiative because the start-up process has been ongoing with the many initiatives in the region. They noted that the Commission for Africa formed by British Prime Minister Tony Blair had identified rapid urbanization as the greatest challenge for African countries after the HIV/AIDS pandemic. As such, there was need for the Millennium team to try and achieve the MDGs both in the villages and the cities.
The UN Millennium Project is a three-year initiative conceived of by the United Nations to analyze policy options and develop a plan of implementation for achieving the MDGs. The goals provide a set of clear targets for reducing poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women by 2015. They were adopted by world leaders at the United Nations Millennium Summit in September 2000.
The meeting addressed by Professor Sachs coincided with a conference of experts organized by UN-HABITAT to discuss ways of financing action plans identified by local communities in the area.
The city was founded in 1901 with the coming of the Uganda Railway. Its population has since grown to over half a million people, some 60 percent of whom live below poverty line. Professor Sachs emphasized that the challenge on Kisumu was to move from the planning stage to mobilizing resources for investments to meet the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Initiative will work with the people of Kisumu to identify and prioritize existing problems/issues and create a comprehensive, MDG-based economic development strategy to improve the standard of living of city residents.
The Mayor, Ms. Prisca Auma said Kisumu had embraced the MDGs because of increased poverty in the city. She identified the critical need to develop a comprehensive urban strategy for Kisumu to respond to the rapid urbanization and environmental degradation as a key challenge for the city.
She thanked UN HABITAT for its support in helping develop the Kisumu City Development Strategy (2004-2009), which she said represented the priorities ordinary people faced with a growing population and new urban development problems.
Kisumu Ndogo June 1st, 2007, 10:29 PM A world away, Kenyan village rallies for favorite U.S. son
By Rob Crilly Special for, USA TODAY
NYANGOMA KOGALA, Kenya — If Barack Obama, Democratic contender for the Illinois Senate seat, had grown up in his father's village in rural west Kenya he would have attended Kogalo Secondary School. Like the other village children, he would have run across its playgrounds and squinted at his books in the unlit classrooms.
http://obama.senate.gov/img/pic_obama_bio.jpg
Next year, the school will become the Barack Obama Secondary. It's just one example of how the U.S. Senate race has electrified a country where politics, torn apart by tribal rivalries and corruption, has become a dirty word. Pastor Jared Waloga, the school's deputy principal, explains the plans for the name change. "It is a matter of pride that one of our own has got into such a position," he says. (Related story: Obama extends reach beyond Illinois race)
As the children head home for lunch, they follow a path that cuts through the Obama compound, a collection of brick huts set among mango trees.
Said Hussein Obama, the uncle of the young state senator, has a radio tuned in to Voice of America for election news.
He has become the family spokesman since his nephew spoke in July at the Democratic convention in Boston. Since then, visitors from the media have made their way to the family home after Obama described how he grew up the son of a Kenyan goat herder.
His father, also called Barack Obama, left the village after winning a scholarship to study in Hawaii. There he met and married Obama Jr.'s mother, who was originally from Kansas. The elder Obama went to Harvard, left his wife when his son was still a toddler and later returned to Kenya.
While the young Barack Obama grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia, after his mother remarried, his father earned a reputation as an economist and a place in the ruling elite. The elder Obama died in a car accident in 1982. He was buried near the hut where he grew up.
The family compound sits among the hills of Nyanza Province, in the village of Nyangoma Kogala. The Obama land covers about 30 acres. Sweet potatoes and beans thrive in the fertile soil. But this year's corn crop has been hit hard by drought.
Inside the hut, Sarah Hussein Obama, 83, speaks proudly of Barry, as she has nicknamed her stepgrandson. "When he came for the first time, it was to see the grave of his father. ... It was impressive to see him identify so much with this place," she says.
He brought his wife, Michelle, on a second visit in 1992. "He was the sort of person who wanted to know everything. He wanted to know why things were the way they were," Sarah says, speaking in the language of her Luo tribe.
With the pride in Obama, there is a growing sense of expectation. Kenya has been let down by generations of politicians. Now they have a new hero, untainted by tribal rivalries or party infighting.
The wave of optimism that spread through the East African country two years ago, when Daniel arap Moi's corrupt reign as president ended, has largely disappeared.
Big things were expected of the president, Mwai Kibaki, but he has assumed a low profile after being injured in a car crash. His coalition has been the subject of demonstrations. Allegations of government corruption have emerged since he took office.
All of this makes Obama's appeal nearly universal.
His uncle says, "In order to develop, we need aid from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The U.S. Senate carries a huge amount of weight, so it is important that one of our own will be there."
In Kisumu, 40 miles from Nyangoma Kogala, people agree Obama could help Kenya.
"He's the Luo who wants to be a senator, the only black African," says Frederick Otieno, leaning against his bicycle on Oginga Odinga Street. "We will get support from America, as Africans, as Kenyans and particularly as Luo."

A new airliner has launched direct flights on the Nairobi-Kisumu route.
Jetlink Express, a Kenyan-owned low cost carrier established three years ago, becomes the fourth carrier to enter the route after Fly 540, East African Airlines and Kenya Airways.
The carrier, which is expected to fly at least 5,000 passengers per month, will have two return flights daily to the lake-side town, one in the morning and another in the evening.
Managing director Elly Aluvale, said the entry of the airline will establish a competitive environment, which is healthy for customers.
"Customers have been complaining that the cost of flights to the Kisumu was too high. We hope our entry will reduce these costs to manageable levels," he said.
Mr Aluvale said there was growth in the number of passengers plying the route and hoped that the company will receive the lion's share of the cake.
"Six months ago, the total market share for the Kisumu route averaged 9,000 per month, but with the increased capacity on the route the market has grown to some 15,000 passengers per month."
Said Mr Aluvale: "The number is set to rise as we head towards the elections. That's why we need to reposition ourselves to benefit from this market."
Speaking during the opening of their Kisumu office at the weekend, Mr Aluvale said the company had launched an expansion and modernisation programme aimed at enhancing their operations and consolidating its position in the industry.
The carrier is in the process of acquiring two seater Canadian regional jets on a three-year leasehold at a cost of 500,000 US dollars (Sh35 million) to increase its airlines fleet

As one settles into Kisumu's hustle and bustle, the sound of luo songs against modernised musical instruments fill the air. Occasionally, it is contemporary Kenyan music or any other Kadongo Kamu version of luo music. The sound of Suzanna Owiyo's hit Kisumu 100 in praise of the city conveniently plays in a nearby stall.
Along one of the busiest streets, traders sell their items. The busy part of the city is very colourful and congested - what with shoes, bags, hardware displayed on the pavements. Sheets, towels, blanket and duvets on sale are hung against the street walls or on strings.
These items come in different colours and patterns against the blazing heat and the incessant sound of bicycle bells, car horns and noisy touts who only make the city even more alive than it actually is. When you think Kisumu City, think a city on the edge of Lake Victoria, think fish, think boda boda bicycles and some of the oldest cars in the region especially Peugeots.
With a lake in the vicinity, fish is a delicacy and has a fish market of it's own. Yet this market seems small because on the streets, you will easily find people selling fish especially along the streets near the municipal market and the second hand market- called Kibuye. The Western Kenya regional Capital is in a way very similar to any town in Uganda. Like Entebbe, Jinja and parts of Kampala, Kisumu rests at the shores of lake Victoria and one can easily view the lake.
Like Entebbe, it has an airport and fisheries organs, which also makes it similar to Jinja. Like Kampala, it has a museum and the British Council. It connects the coast to Uganda through the Uganda Railways. Like Gulu, Lira, Apac and most luo speaking towns, the people speak a lot of dholuo, a luo dialect which is slightly similar to those in Uganda.
Shopping pot
Kisumu compared to Kampala has mordern shopping malls like Swan Centre, United, Mega City, Mega Plaza among others. It also has numerous supermarkets with unique items and affordable prices compared to Kampala. Nakumatt Nyanza in Mega Plaza with another branch in Mega City creates a big impression of the city.
These supermarkets seem to come with everything from perishables, household items and books to clothes, travel accessories and jewellery. Meanwhile at Nyanza Apparels, one can access numerous items personalised and branded apparel. Kisumu also has a crafts market, where unique African jewels, shoes, carvings in wood and soapstone, bags and utensils among others can be found. Kisumu is the third largest city in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa.
According to history, it was founded in 1901 as Port Florence, the main in-land terminal of the Uganda railway which was only recently sold to investors.
Kisumu is host to numerous regional offices of various businesses and organisations. For instance, the least one could expect would be the British Council Office, thinking that there is only one in Nairobi. Prices are affordable and depending on where one is, there is a chance to bargain. Food compared to Uganda seems very expensive and of a limited scope. Your delicacy will mainly be fish, beef (of all kinds), chips, Ugali (posho) and chappati and vegetables on a daily basis.
Finding all the variety in Uganda there would be a miracle. The town has fair and affordable accommodation facilities dominated by guesthouses and just a few hotels. There were no clear forms of entertainment in the town, although the people seemed to have an active social life.
The city, which is far smaller than Kampala is obviously better planned especially for the housing, which is more organised, compared to the latter's randomly sprouting and spread houses.
Kisumu which is rather slower in motion than Nairobi and Kampala is at least six hours from Kampala by road at a realistic fee. It is a good destination or stop over for anyone.

Kenguy June 30th, 2007, 01:23 PM Cool pics. Thanks Kisumu Ndogo! I would like to know, which of the two (Kisumu and Kisii) is growing faster? I hear that kisii is becoming a major business hub in western kenya.
Kisumu Ndogo July 2nd, 2007, 04:44 AM Actually Kisii is a very fast growing urban centre with large population that is by far Agro based on the other hand Kisumu is the logistics and transportation hub of western Kenya. note that the Kisii - Kisumu route attracts a very large business oriented individuals. hope things will continue that way
africanman July 2nd, 2007, 11:21 PM Kenya's smaller cities have suffered years of neglect and major work needs to be done to make them viable enough to compete in what is now a global economy. Kisumu, Mombasa and Nakuru are disapointing in my opinion because they have location and enough brain power to be international cities.
Kisumu Ndogo July 3rd, 2007, 03:10 AM I agree with u Africanman I think this decline can be reversed by decentralizing important institutions not neccessarily the capital like equiping largest hospitals in these towns with the best facilities to rival KNH same to universities, also expand or build international size airports to encourage direct links from worldover, give incentives to companies relocating and opening branches outside Nairobi. empower council authorities in Kisumu, Mombasa and Nakuru to compete effectively with Nairobi in bring in investments i.e international conferences and investments from abroad and finally the government makes sure that their is a properly functional wide highway linking these imporatant cities of the future.

Kisumu Ndogo July 4th, 2007, 03:15 PM Uganda: Adapt Kenya's Sugar Industry System
The Monitor (Kampala)
OPINION
11 April 2007
Posted to the web 12 April 2007
Kavuma Kaggwa
I am so glad that the article I wrote in the Daily Monitor on March 19 has sparked off a rational debate to save Mabira Forest. In the article "What Mabira means to the Baganda". I thanked President Museveni for stopping the giving away of Mabira to Mehta, as the Daily Monitor had reported in the previous few weeks.
What surprised me were the banner headlines that appeared in the media the following day March 20, stating " the cabinet has given away Mabira forest to Mehta". That sparked off the current debate, which I see that the public is winning.
I am so happy that the whole county is united in the fight against the giving away part of Mabira Forest Central reserve to Mehta for growing sugar cane, which can be grown somewhere else in Uganda.
I last saw this thing of national unity in 1950s and early 1960s, when the struggle for "Independence was at its height. I took part in this struggle when I was a member of Uganda National congress with the late I.K. Musaazi, Abu Mayanja, J.W. Kiwanuka, Milton Obote, Baraki Kirya, Y.S Baamutta, Yekosofati, Engur and Otema Alimadi. Later on the late Ben Kiwanuka of Democratic Party joined us in the struggle.
I see a formidable challenge facing the present government and parliament whose members are highly educated Makerere University products with several degrees. Will they ignore and brush aside this huge national outcry against the destruction of Mabira forest?
Remember this is not a government of "the past leaders" whom president Museveni at one time referred to as "swine" or "beasts". This is a government of "men with a vision" and America at one time was referring to them as a " breed of newAfrican leaders" and the "beacon of hope for Africa".
Men who understand what it means to preserve nature and natural forests like Mabira and Kalangala forests. One of them boasts of having more that six degrees in his bed!
This is now the time for Uganda to adopt the Kenyan system of sugar cane growing. I lived in Kenya for 33 years and I saw their sugar industry starting and growing up to now.
Right from the time of the late president Jomo Kinyatta, the government allowed Kenyans to grow sugarcane as out growers and sell that cane to factories.
The Indian factory owners at Chemical, Mihoroni and Miwani did not object to this policy. Later on Kenya developed two more sugar factories at Mumias and Awendo. These two are not Indian owned but all the five are in Nyanza and Western Kenya.
During the last two weeks of March this year I went to Kenya purposely to see this system of sugarcane out growers. It is working wonderfully well.
The stakeholders, the farmers, the factory owners and the government are happy with the arrangement.
This is what I observed. All the area from Busia to Kisumu and the area from Kisumu to Kericho, Kenyans grow sugarcane on their farms, plots and bibanja as we call them here in Uganda. All that area from Kisumu down to Awendo, Isebania and to the border, people grow sugarcane and sell it to the factories.
The area I am talking about is what we used to call south Nyanza and North Nyanza, but to many it is called "Luo land".
The whole of western Kenya from Eldoret to Mumias and Kakamega and the whole area to Malaba border and the whole area up North to Kitale, the ordinary people grow sugar cane on their plots and farms and they sell it to the factories.
I spoke to some farmers in Kisumu and Eldoret and they told me that a good system of collecting the cane was worked out in such a way that factory lorries collect the sugarcane and then the money is recovered when the farmers are being paid.
It is said the Kenya government adopted the system of sugar cane out growers for two reasons:
First, the government could not chase away people from their land to give it to Indians sugar factory owners, therefore the answer was to allow the Kenyan Africans themselves grow sugar cane and sell it to the Indian factory owners.
The second reason was that; the Kenya government could not allow one person, Indian or African, to get so rich in area where the indigenous Africans would perpetually be economically and socially slaves to one person, whereas they can very well utilise their land and grow sugarcane and fed the factories.
All Ugandans remember that before the 1986 the coffee industry was booming and there was no abject poverty in the villages as it is now. Coffee industry in Buganda was mysteriously killed, followed by the vanilla industry as well.
What is the solution now? The solution now is that the government of President Museveni and NRM should enact a law through parliament as quickly as possible allowing Ugandans to become "sugar cane growers" and sell it to the factory owners at a price favourable to both.

Kisumu Ndogo July 4th, 2007, 05:08 PM Hopes high as town tipped for millennium city status
Story by MAUREEN ONGWAE
Publication Date: 6/26/2007
Kisumu Town is still grappling with a housing crisis, water shortage, and poor infrastructure despite having been declared by the United Nations as a Millennium City slightly over a year ago.
However, the town residents, authorities and external assessors are still optimistic that very soon, the fortunes will change for the better to reflect the international positioning.
But locally, the status of Kisumu as a city was cast in doubt recently when Local Government minister Musikari Kombo said formal procedures were never followed in bestowing the town formal status solely enjoyed by Nairobi.
The town was selected by the UN among other six towns in Africa to be awarded the city status.
Conceived under the African Millennium Cities Initiative, the overall goal is to assist Kisumu, through research and policy analysis, to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). To fully fit the bill, its areas of primary focus should include formulating policies relating to foreign direct investment (FDI) with a view to creating employment, stimulating domestic enterprise development and fostering economic growth.
Kisumu, the third largest town in Kenya, is one of the fastest growing urban centres in the country.
Its unique positioning on the shores of Lake Victoria and close to
countries in the East African Community presents the town with the potential to be the leading commercial, communication and administrative centre in the Lake basin, serving as a transportation hub with rail, road, water and air links.
Rapid urbanisation trends in Kisumu particularly in the last decade coupled with low investment in infrastructure and basic service expansion has resulted in enormous pressure on the urban environment.
Quick changes
Abject poverty, deplorable road network and proliferation of slums characterise Kisumu but quick changes are bound to take place as the Millennium City Initiative (MCI) takes shape.
But even the excited few cast doubts as to whether the lakeside town would ably rise to the occasion of the new status, which would be mainly to address fundamental developmental issues to match its new image if the Government does not fully engage itself in the activities meant to uplift the town’s standards.
A millennium city, according to MCI, should be at an appropriate location and not have a huge population as these could make it cumbersome in reviving infrastructure and putting in place appropriate measures to alleviate poverty.
Ms Ashley Hufft, the representative for MCI in Kenya, says a preliminary survey done revealed that the town was well endowed with resources that could attract investors.
The deputy mayor of Kisumu, Mr Ben Odondi, said the council was itself committed to see the town rise to standards that could attract foreign investors.
By this, the abject poverty inherent in the town should be reduced considerably and its economic growth enhanced.
Economic growth
Currently, the annual economic growth stands at 2.8 per cent with up to 60 per cent of the town’s 800,000 population living in abject poverty.
The town has greater potential in attracting foreign investors due to its potential in agriculture and ecotourism sector, experts have revealed.
Among the most fascinating areas foreign investors can venture into include agriculture, fisheries, livestock production and horticulture where investors could set up industries for processing products.
A major setbacks is that although the town sits on the world’s second largest fresh water body, the taps still run dry as the residents are forced to walk long distances and dig deep into their pockets for the precious commodity.
The authorities would also be grappling with the huge amounts of solid waste whose disposal is fast becoming a nightmare for the residents.
Unlike other major towns, Kisumu does not have a designated dumping site.
In the effort to make Kisumu a millennium

Kisumu Ndogo July 6th, 2007, 09:31 PM Kenyan Cities and towns have partnered with sister cities in the west in order to exchange ideas and experties for developmental reasons apart from Roanoke, Virginia Kisumu is also a sister city to Cheltam in UK, Other Kenyan partnerships include Seattle with Mombasa and Denver with Nairobi others are Newyork with Johannesburg RSA both Cities in US. KISUMU – East Africa’s oil giant Shell Ltd has unveiled ambitious expansion plans that could see its retail outlets more than double.
Shell managing director Mr. Patrick Obath told Business Week in an interview last week that the one year programme was in response to the growing demand for Shell products in the region.
This, he said, had been catalysed by high quality products and consumer confidence, making Shell brands the most-sought-after in the market.
“Our expansion is partly guided by consumer confidence on our quality products and the drive to change for better. Our products, mainly diesel extra, lead extra and the high quality lubricant Shell Rimula remains the leading market share leader in the region, so you can only expect this to improve,” he said.
http://as.wn.com/i/1a/e719e855022679.jpg
Obath was officiating at the opening of Shell’s only retail outlet in Western Kenya called Phoenix in Kisumu last week.
The ceremony marked the return of the multi-national oil company in Western Kenya following its unceremonious exit in 2003 over what the company termed unconducive business environment.
Obath said Shell considers the Western Kenya market as lucrative and also important due to its easy link and access to landlocked Uganda, Rwanda and the larger economy of the DR Congo where Shell enjoys top consumer indices.
“We only wound our operations in Western Kenya temporarily due to the influx of unscrupulous oil dealers who had then flooded this market with oil meant for export. This made their pump prices much cheaper because they evaded paying duty,” he said.
But with the prevailing tax regime, Obath said, Shell is now back to stay. This, according to Obath, has been made possible with the assistance of Kenya Revenue Authority that has created a level playing field for all.
He said the expansion would partly see all the BP retail sites recently acquired by Shell re-branded in line with the current ongoing re-branding by Shell globally, a move he said would not only give the company a new face value, but also bring in added value to customer service.
“Customer service remains our core value in doing business. We want to give the best to our consumers who have remained loyal to enable us reach this far, and that is why our product remains on top of others in the market,” he said.

KISUMU, KENYA:
Kisumu is about to be abuzz with MCI-related activity in anticipation of the July 17-18 Investment Roundtable to be held in Nairobi in association with the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Earth Institute Director Jeffrey D. Sachs will be keynote speakers at the Investment Roundtable, which will have a special focus on regional development in general and Kisumu in particular. After the Roundtable, interested investors have been invited to come to Kisumu to look for themselves at possible investment opportunities.
To prepare for this event the MCI is currently carrying out an enterprise infrastructure survey, and graduate students from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) have already completed a preliminary scoping of investment opportunities and constraints [http://www.sipa.columbia.edu/]. The MCI's pro bono partners have contributed tremendously to this effort: the New York-based law firm Cravath Swain & Moore LLP is completing a review of the regulatory and legal environment for business and investment; the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is helping small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to profile their companies and define their technical and financial needs, and the international accounting firm KPMG is carrying out commercial analysis on some of the more promising investment opportunities and promising sectors for investment. Under the leadership of MCI Consultant Vishwas Govitrikar, MCI Project Manager Ashley Hufft, the Kenya Investment Authority and the City of Kisumu, the MCI will also host a mid-June workshop in Kisumu, results of which, along with the results of these other studies, will appear in a City Investment Guide for Kisumu.
Kisumu Ndogo July 16th, 2007, 03:16 PM Kenya is a coastal state with a marine coastline of 536 Kilometres and a well-developed
marine fishing industry. In spite of this, Lake Victoria continues to dominate Kenya's
fishing output source. The lake currently accounts for over 90% of the tonnes of fish
caught while marine fishing accounts for only 4% of the total output. Kenya claims 6% of
Lake Victoria's total surface area, with 43% being owned by Uganda and 51% by
Tanzania. Lake wide fish production is estimated at between 400 – 500 metric tons with
Tanzania landing 40%, Kenya 35% and Uganda 25%. The landed value of this catch is
between USD 300 – 400 million annually.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40924000/jpg/_40924781_boat203.jpg
The fisheries sub-sector provides employment and income to over 500,000 Kenyans
engaged in fish production and related enterprises. In terms of contribution to the gross
domestic product (GDP), Kenya's fishing industry has accounted for 0.3% of GDP for the
period 1999-2003. Kenya’s annual average production for the period 1999-2003 was
171,000 metric tonnes with a value of approximately KShs 8 billion in 2003. About 30% of
the fish is exported to countries in Europe and other non-European countries.
Fishing in Kenya is mostly carried out by artisanal fishermen operating small fishing
boats in inland lakes and marine waters. A small proportion of fish in Kenya is obtained
from fish farming (aquaculture). The inland lakes are Lake Victoria, Lake Turkana, Lake
Baringo, Lake Naivasha and smaller Lakes including Chala and Jipe. About 92% of fish
comes from Lake Victoria and the rest from the Indian Ocean (4%), inland lakes and
rivers (3%) and aquatic culture (1%).

Kibaki promises Nyanza Sh12b development kitty
By John Oywa
President Kibaki has promised the Opposition stronghold, Nyanza, a Sh12 billion development kitty that includes plans to upgrade Kisumu to become the headquarters of the East African Community.
The president said the Government was set to spend Sh8.8 billion to improve the region’s infrastructure, announcing that the long awaited Sh2.6 billion expansion of Kisumu Airport would finally start in November. In a move to prove his Government’s development record in Nyanza, President Kibaki gave a long list of major roads, agricultural and electrification projects to be undertaken.
http://www.kbc.co.ke/images/pictures/Kisumu_airport.jpg
He said the Government was injecting more funds to strengthen sugar, cotton and fisheries sub-sectors, which are the economic mainstays of the region.
He said the recent decision to move the Lake Victoria Basin Commission to Kisumu was just a sign of better things to come, hinting that the lakeside town could eventually host the East African Community, currently seated in Arusha, Tanzania."All activities pertaining to Lake Victoria will now be managed from Kisumu. We have talked to the East African Governments and they have agreed that Kisumu becomes the hub of East Africa.
Speaking at the Kisumu showground, where he opened this year’s ASK show, Kibaki said tenders for the reconstruction work that would upgrade Kisumu Airport to international status would be advertised next month. But as he dangled the goodies, Kibaki cautioned Nyanza politicians against being hypnotised by election campaigns.
"Don’t over-indulge in political campaigns. You should instead work hard to produce more food because election is only a one-day affair and will come to pass," he said.

Kisumu has a population of 504, 000 inhabitants. As the global population rises United Nations expects that between 1995 and 2025 the number of people living in urban centers will increase from 2.8 to 5.3 billion, and that 90% of the growth will occur in developing countries. In July 1899, the first skeleton development plan for Kisumu was done for the township.
This development plan included landing places and wharves along the northern lakeshore of the gulf. Another plan was drawn in May 1900 when plots were allocated to a few European firms as well as Indian traders who had traveled to Kisumu on contracts to construct the Kenya Uganda railway and had decided to settle at the expanding terminus. The plan included a flying boat jetty (now used by the fisheries department). In 1903, the township boundaries were gazetted and some 12,000 acres including water set aside for the town’s development.
The change was affected in 1902 when the basic layout of the town was done and construction of a number of buildings commenced. These included the old railway headquarters (now state lodge) and the old prison (now administrative police lines). The new township retained the name Kisumu, in substitution for port Florence, earlier given by the settlers. At this time there was the old Kisumu, two rows of “dukas” along Mumias road north of the gulf. These were later demolished in the late twenties when new plots became available on Odera and Ogada streets in the present Kisumu. This new area acquired the name the “New Bazaar”.
The Region
http://www.lvrlac.net/stories/images/cdscities.jpg
Kisumu today serves as the district as well as the provincial headquarters for Nyanza, and is the largest city in the entire Lake Victoria basin, a region forming about 6% of Kenya’s land area. The City has developed progressively from a railway terminus and internal port in 1901, to become the leading regional commercial/trading, industrial, communication and administrative center in the Great Lakes region - Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. The City growth rate is currently estimated at 2.8% p.a (CDS, 2004).

Kisumu Ndogo October 24th, 2007, 01:31 AM Kisumu Airport expansion begins
Published on October 24, 2007, 12:00 am
By John Oywa and Mangoamosota
THE long awaited Sh2.6 billion expansion of the Kisumu airport to international status has begun.
International consultants and senior Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) officials on Tuesday met engineers from 15 firms eyeing the contract.
The meeting paves the way for the bidding and eventual awarding of tenders for the expansion to start in March next year.
KAA projects Manager, Mr Philemon Chamwada, said it would take about 22 months to complete the work.
"The long delay was caused by detailed feasibility studies and Environmental impact assessments but we are finally ready to take off," he said.
The rehabilitation and expansion work will involve lengthening of the 1.7 km run way to three km, and widening it to accommodate bigger planes.
It will also have a new lounge to handle up to 280 passengers per hour, a new spacious packing bay, a terminal building, an apron and taxiway.
"Currently, the airport can only accommodate up to 500 passengers at any given time, 12 scheduled flights a day besides chartered flights, with the largest being the 85-seater capacity DC-90," said the airport manager, Mr Joseph Okumu.
The engineers said that once completed, the airport would handle the Boeing 737 planes to fly from Kisumu to other international destinations.
Dr Tinus Vermeuklen, a consultant engineer with the Netherlands Aviation and Stewart Scott International companies, said the new-look Kisumu airport would be bigger than Wilson Airport and capable of taking in four Boeings, and up to seven smaller planes at once.
"International flights directly to and from Kisumu will be without any problems," he said.
However, local contractors cried foul saying the qualifying conditions were tough and would lock out local firms.
http://www.kbc.co.ke/images/pictures/Kisumu_airport.jpg
Mr Singh Hayer, a local contractor, said the requirement to have $40 million turnover per year was unfair to small firms.
"These rules are meant to favour international firms and lock out the indigenous ones that employ locals. We want it reviewed," he said.
Chamwada said KAA would receive the bids by November 20 and the winner announced in mid December.
President Kibaki in August announced that the money for the airport’s expansion had been set a side and denounced sceptics who claimed he project had been shelved.
The upgraded airport is expected to open up Western Kenya to international fish and flower markets, as well as tourism. Airlines currently plying the route include, East African Safari, Air Express, Fly 540, Kenya Airways and Jetlink.

I think it would make a good resort Island if somone decided to develop it. Marinas the lot.

Kisumu Ndogo March 21st, 2008, 04:32 AM Kisumu is still optimistic, despite the destruction
Written by Laila Macharia
Man walks past a burnt shop in KisumuFebruary 27, 2008: Media footage of looting and burning left the impression of large scale destruction downtown, but a trip to Kisumu three weeks ago showed that with the exception of one supermarket and a few other spread-out shops, the city is largely intact. Hawkers are out doing their thing and the number of boda bodas and tuk tuks are overwhelming as usual.
Still, political tension is perceptibly high. The gentleman driving us from the airport remarks that people have been very annoyed . They say Raila deserved to be president since he won the election. However, he concedes, the second-best option would be a rerun. Failing that a power-sharing where Raila is prime minister, but accountable only to the Parliament.
Any news bulletin provokes city-wide attention. Otherwise illiterate people seem to understand the nuances of international relations, reciting the day’s agenda for the mediation team and the ongoings at the African Union as if they had been there in person.
http://www.wfrchurch.org/relief/photogallery/Africa/Kisumu/ELECTION%20KISUMU%20023.jpg
There are some signs that things are not quite right. Remnants of burnt tyres remain on some roads. At the hospital, the nurses are relieved that blood supplies are finally being flown in from Nairobi. A visit to IDPs, ironically located at Haki House, reveals that 35 people, including children, desperately need funds for transport “at least as far as Nakuru”. One woman explained that she would stay. “I was married in Bondo in 1989.
These are my people. Once the problems end, I’ll go back home.” In back streets, the mood is less pragmatic. One hotel is closed, its owner having fled and left it under constant armed police guard. But there is another under-current. Asked whether he thinks the ethnic animosity runs deep, a businessman shakes his head. If the political stalemate is settled, he predicts, things will go back to normal.
Different people seem eager to emphasise that no Kikuyu was killed even at the height of the clashes. Someone else points out that the IDPs driven out of Naivasha were not turned on by their neighbours, but by militia “brought in from elsewhere.”
The weather is exceptionally crisp and bright and a trip to the lakeside yields exceptional views and sumptuous fried fish. For both tourism and real estate development, this year was going to be a bustling one, with large housing estates planned in Eldoret and upscale resorts both on Lake Victoria and bordering Kakamega Forest. After the visit, it’s clear that these projects are not cancelled, but merely postponed.
Dr Macharia runs Scion Real, a property investment firm. She is also a member of the Citizens Pathway Group.

Kisumu Ndogo June 19th, 2008, 05:48 AM Kisumu Airport tackles jam as more airlines land
Written by Maureen Ongwae
May 1, 2008: The Kisumu Airport has expanded over the years to attract eight airlines up from two three years ago.
This has seen revenues collected at the facility go up by 150 per cent during the period.
Kenya Airways, East African and Eagle Aviation were the first airlines to fly the route but the latter has since stopped.
Others to join of late are Jet Link, Aero Kenya, Executive Turbine, Fly 540, Imatogo Airlines and Lakevik Aviation.
http://www.bdafrica.com/images/stories/cargo%20and%20freight/bd-540.jpg
Growth of air transport to the region has led to an increase in revenue at the facility from Sh40 million per year in 2005 to Sh100 million.
“Increase of activities at the airport has impacted positively on the revenue. The figure has increased by 150 per cent,” airport manager, Joseph Okumu, said yesterday.
Passenger numbers have gone up from 70,000 in 2005 to 240,000 in 2007. Authorities are upbeat and predict these figures would hit 300,000 yearly upon the completion of the expansion programme, expected to take off soon. The recent launch of flights on the Kisumu-Entebbe route will also boost traffic by attracting international airlines.
Among the reasons that have been mentioned as major boosts for air transport to the western Kenya region include the poor road network. Motorists have resorted to occasional use of the tattered road, fearing the skyrocketing maintenance costs, heavy fuel costs, and lost time.
“Majority of air travellers are avoiding the bad roads connecting western Kenya to Nairobi,” added Mr Okumu.
The opening up of the region to the tourism industry has been seen as another reason for the growth of air transport since most tourists connecting to various sites in Nyanza fly. “We even have chartered planes from the airport to various destinations and after the airport expansion, we expect them to be more than the current two in a day,” said Mr Okumu.
Among the places the chartered planes operate include Mwanza, Masai Mara, Kakamega National Reserve, Ruma National Park, Rusinga and Mfang’ano islands in Lake Victoria.
The facility supports sectors like hospitality, health, transport and education, stretching it near congestion at the passenger terminal.
“The passenger terminal is so small that we have been forced to put up temporary tents just to make the customers a little more comfortable.”
When the Sh2.6 billion upgrade starts, the runway will be one of the parts to be redone, besides renovating most of the old facilities at the airport.

May 28, 2008: The inability of Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) to pump oil at a faster rate from Mombasa has not only led to outstripping of the commodity’s supply by demand in the western region, but is also hindering shipping of the product into the country.
And experts are warning that the problem might persist following fears that the company’s expansion projects that were expected to be commissioned by August would not beat the deadline.
Kenya exports refined oil products to 11 countries in the Great Lakes region, but KPC’s inability to pump more fuel from Mombasa — which hosts the country’s single crude oil refinery from where the transporters take it further inland into the region — is posing a major problem to the economy.
The country imports its oil products from the Middle East and efforts to import oil from Southern Sudan in the past have been fruitless because of East African nations’ inability to refine the heavy crude oil from Southern Sudan’s oil fields.
Pumping rate
KPC’s enhancement programmes are meant to up KPC’s pumping rate from Mombasa up by 100 per cent — that is from 440 to 880 cubic meters per hour — is being undertaken by China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Corporation in conjunction with two local firms.
“If we were able to pump more oil to other regions, then we would be able to create space at Kipevu oil storage facility and more ships could discharge, but as we talk there is always one or two ships waiting,” said KPC’s coast regional manager, Mr Evans Nyang’aye.
Though the KPC management is tight-lipped over the anticipated delay in the commissioning of the project, it is believed that contractual disagreement between the international contractor and two local firms could be the reason behind the dragging of the project.
The Mombasa-Nairobi line project is the first ambitious expansion programme that KPC has ever undertaken on the line since its construction by a Japanese firm 30 years ago.
The line has apparently become overwhelmed by demand, which has exceeded the initial operations estimates that stood at 350 cubic meters per hour.
New stations
To push the pump rate high, KPC announced plans to erect new pump stations at Samburu (PS1), Manyani (PS4), Makindu (PS6) and Konza (PS8), which would have supplemented the Mombasa, Maungu, Mtito Andei and Sultan pump stations.
This would have enabled KPC to pump more oil from Mombasa to other regions at an increased rate hence create space at the Kipevu oil storage facility tanks to enable ships off load consignments at a reduced turn around times.
Earlier this year, the company commissioned a spur line from Kipevu to the Shimanzi oil terminal, which was also expected to bring down oil import costs.
Experts have been pointing out that fuel prices in most African countries would increase even if the international market prices stabilised due to cost implications of shipping and refining. Such costs are normally borne by the consumers.
East Africa consumes about 3.5 million tonnes of petroleum products.
The importation of these products on average costs the regional economy one billion dollars, which is 25 per cent of all international import costs.
Being a gateway to most landlocked nations in the region; KPC has been announcing the roll out of various projects, which include an oil pipeline to six countries in Eastern Africa to offset high demands for petroleum products in the region.
Other projects include the building of an oil extension pipeline to act as a new alternative to the Sudanese oil pipeline and extending its reach to Rwanda.
A separate line to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi and Uganda has also been mooted. For the projects to realise their goal, fast turn around times of ships off loading oil in Mombasa would be key.
And it is in line with this that KPC announced its focus on measures to increase the product flow rate on line 1, which is Mombasa –Nairobi pipeline and subsequently the Nairobi-Eldoret line all the way to Kisumu.
In 2006, KPC signed a Sh2.9 billion contract with China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Corporation, which was to sublet 30 per cent to local firms to expand line 1.
And such expansion would have helped in creating space at the oil storage facilities in Mombasa which could have translated to shipping in more oil.
http://www.bdafrica.com/images/stories/Industry/bd-Mombasa-Refinery.jpg
But currently off loading of the commodity by ships calling at Kipevu are under a strict schedule from KPC, which states that if a ship arrives earlier it bears the cost.
Mr Nyanga’ya is optimistic that the enhancement project could be able to beat the deadline, but also expressed fear that the commissioning might stretch to a longer period than was anticipated.
“The completion of the expansion project would not only be able to satisfy the western demands but also decrease ships turn around times, ” he said.

Journey to Change Lakeside Town's Face Begins

Nairobi
An ambitious multi-million-shilling investment initiative intended to turn Kisumu into a western Kenya business and tourism hub will be rolled out on Tuesday.
The initiative is part of the Government's Vision 2030. An artist's impression of what the Kisumu town will look like after it is converted into a regional business and tourism hub. In what is expected to be the biggest investment in a single town in the country in recent times, Kisumu is set to have a five-star hotel with 400 rooms, two three-star hotels with 300 rooms each, and an international conference centre with facilities to accommodate more than 2,000 people.
In addition, the lakeside town will have a metropolitan railway system, an ultra-modern office park consisting of multi-storey commercial buildings, a car-parking to accommodate 2,000 cars, a shopping mall, a business process outsourcing (BPO) park, a floating restaurant and facilities for recreation.
The Lake View Resort City initiative, being modelled like the Sun City of South Africa, is the brainchild of the Kenya Railways Corporation, which is set to jointly implement the project with a consortium of foreign and local investors.
Feasibility study
KR chairman Jonathan Mturi confirmed that the Lake View Resort City was underway and a feasibility study had already been undertaken.
Mr Mturi said once the initiative had been presented to stakeholders and they are sensitised about its viability and benefits, KR would go ahead and start working on plans on how to implement it.
However, a KR official who talked to the Nation on condition that he is not named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, said the development and financing of the Lake View Resort City was expected to be a joint venture between KR and other investors, while the metropolitan railway system would be developed by KR and other stakeholders through franchising - build operate and transfer (BOT), joint venture or long term franchise.
"The proposed Lake View Resort City will be located on the Kenya Railways land measuring 20 acres, on the shores of Lake Victoria. It will be situated between Jomo Kenyatta Highway, Bank Street, the Railway Station and the State Lodge. The site is sandwiched between Kisumu Port and Nyanza provincial headquarters," he said.
He said the initiative was in line with KR's mandate and the Government's Vision 2030.
Following the Rift Valley Railways taking over the operation of train services, KR has remained with the responsibility of managing the concession, management of non-conceded assets and promotion, facilitation and participation in metropolitan mass transit systems.
The corporation also has the mandate to develop the national railway network, develop and manage the inland waterways and manage the Railway Training Institute.
"As part of the corporation's mandate, KR has developed a strategy to create exciting and innovative property developments. One of the key developments is Lake View Resort City on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kisumu City," he said.
The KR manager said the Lake View Resort City was expected to not only transform Kisumu as a destination of choice for both leisure and conference tourism but also provide commercial and business opportunities for the residents of the town.
He added that the project was implemented would lead to the creation and stimulation of value adding activities in the region, creation of job opportunities in construction, hospitality, travel, marine sectors and other related fields.
Business centre
The official said the provision of high quality office space in the town will not only attract government, private sector and NGOs but also provide high quality business and trading premises for local businesses. "The BPO park will transform Kisumu into an international business centre," he said. Kisumu is an attractive city on the shores of Lake Victoria that was established as Port Florence, the terminal of Uganda Railways, over a century ago. The town has over the years grown into a trade and transport hub. Kisumu's prosperity gained momentum after the formation of East African Community but its fortunes declined soon after the collapse of the community in 1977.
The town is poised to regain its former status, especially after being named one of seven Africa Millennium Cities under The Millennium Cities Initiative. The ambitious plan has elicited excitement in both the business, tourism and political circles, with key players in the sectors welcoming it. They say the plan would create businesses and job opportunities. Among those who have given a nod to the project is the secretary of Kisumu City Business District Association, Dr Carey Onyango, and the manager of Lake Victoria Tourism Forum, Mr Francis Omondi. Dr Onyango said KCBDA would support any initiative that has the potential of creating business and jobs, but said such developments should ensure the local residents had a stake in them.
"In principle, we welcome anybody who wants to invest in Kisumu and create business and job opportunities, but such investments should deepen the local level of ownership," he said. Mr Omondi said the planned five-star hotel, two three-star hotels and an international conference centre would open up conference tourism in western Kenya.
"You know, Kisumu has been very popular with conference tourism, but has been lacking adequate accommodation and conference facilities. But this initiative is likely to address this shortcoming," he said. The envisaged developments are also expected to be a major boost to Government plans to reopen the western Kenya tourism circuit.
The Western Kenya Tourism Circuit comprises Nyanza and Western provinces and parts of Rift Valley. The major tourist attractions in the region include Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lake in the world, and the source of River Nile. Others are Mt Elgon National Park, Kakamega Forest National Park, Ndere Island National Park, National Museums of Kenya, Impala National Park, Saiwa Swamp National Park and Ruma National Park. The western Kenya tourism circuit received a major boost recently when the Kenya Airports Authority announced that it was set to modernise and expand the airport at a cost of Sh3 billion.
KAA managing director George Muhoho said a Chinese company had been awarded the tender to expand the airport's two-kilometre runway and also expand and modernise the passenger terminus

muhana August 28th, 2008, 10:11 PM Kisumu has so much potential. The government needs to work with the people of Kisumu to harness the potential of the lake.
Kisumu Ndogo August 29th, 2008, 09:52 AM Your observations are right Muhana Kisumu's strategic central location in Africa's great lakes region encompassing Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi is its greatest asset. I believe the Airport ugrading project to international standards will enhance trade and tourism network and help open up the greater Western Kenya region. The main problem facing Kisumu at this moment however is that its destiny is so much tied to the political dynamics which is not a very good thing. Having said that projects like Sondu Miriu hydroelectric project should be able to help Kisumu expand and its industrial base, the roads are in dire need of repair but the diverse business community that encampasses both locals and asian community is a promising asset too.

Obama factor brings hope to tourism sector
Published on 09/11/2008
By Benson Kathuri
Tourists from the United States (US) are set to increase as more Americans seek to explore the heritage of President-elect Barack Obama.
The Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) Managing Director Ongong’a Achieng is upbeat that the US market is likely to surpass all other market sources by early next year.
"The Obama factor means a lot to this country and the economy. Its image has totally changed," Dr Achieng told the Standard in an exclusive interview.
Achieng said tourism almost collapsed due to the impact of post-election violence early in the year, but the board and other stakeholders had since engaged in aggressive marketing.
Highest number
He said the United Kingdom produced the highest number of tourists (42,763 arrivals) between July and September, followed by the US (25,315) and Italy (13,105).
However, this trend, he said, is likely to change as more tour operators, locally and abroad, introduce the Obama factor to market Kenya as the preferred tourism destination. The MD revealed that one American tour operator has organised a tour to the country, purposely to visit Kogelo village, where President Obama’s father was born.
The New York based tour firm announced shortly after President Obama was elected last week that it had introduced a 11-day presidential heritage safari in its global tours. Achieng said the planned safari also targets Mt Kenya forest, Lake Nakuru Park, and the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The safari would then head North West to Kisumu.
"An additional two nights will be spent in Kisumu, during which time travellers will visit the village of Kogelo, the final resting place of Obama Sr," said a dispatch from the company made available to the Standard.
"The travellers will then drive to the shore of Lake Victoria, visit the Kisumu Museum and the city and meet Luo ethnic groups to learn first hand, more of the culture of the United States’ first African-American President."
inadequate facilities
Though the move would open up the Western circuit to more visitors, Achieng expressed concern over inadequate facilities within the region. "I appeal to investors to take advantage of the situation and invest in the tourism industry," said Achieng.
Besides the American visitors, Achieng predicted a sharp increase in visitors from other regions, who would also be interested in Obama’s ancestry. The industry is expected to record full recovery by the end of next year, although there are indications this might come sooner than expected owing to the Obama factor.

I think the image link of Kisumu Ndogo's post #67 (EABS (East African Building Society)) on page 4 has changed. That certainly does not look like EABS to me
