Looking at the rendering you can see why Vdara is arguably the dictionary definition of sleek.

Updated - the new gifs have the sun in around the same place, much better to see.

The first photo is in march 2007, and 2nd is today so that's 5 months about.

Cool, first I heard that. I knew that "Sobella" was a working title that was actually used for the entire project at the very start and then used for just the mall after they came up with the "CityCenter" name. "Sobella" means "south of Bellagio".

Yeah, they don't mess around with construction around here. Before some of the glass was installed, it looked like some giant moonbase- I counted at least 9 cranes just driving by one day. The slowest construction by far was Trump's first tower. That thing took forever.

Yeah, here it is a couple days after being imploded. It was really small compared to the gigantic one they are building in its place that will be used by both CityCenter and MC. But yeah, right now MC only has surface parking.

No, not from me. It's been too hot all summer to spend much time out shooting down there and tomorrow I'm moving my office to Summerlin and won't be going to the strip as often as I did the past year. Maybe twice a month I'll go down there.

Stay away from Monte Carlo if you could.

I was there about 2 weeks and the parking was quite horrible. Valet parking too the longest of all the hotels on the strip, and if you come back @ night, they got no parking NOR VALET! They actually make you park across the alley on the surface lot, which obviously is always full, and you have to find your way round to the NYNY parking garage, which doesn't even have a way for you to go up by elevators! Not to mention to steaming hot weather! Ugh

No wonder their rooms are so cheap.

However you CAN get really good pix of the CityCenter if you request the right room. Mine was on the 31st facing the pool, which means full view of the construction site.

These is a reaction against Macao growing?

mdiederi
November 29th, 2007, 04:29 AM
No, this is a reaction to Las Vegas growing. Macau has less than 9,000 hotel rooms but is now starting to grow bigger. Las Vegas, on the other hand, has over 145,000 hotel rooms and still needs a lot more. Two completely different types of tourist markets. Macau makes money from lots of people who mostly gamble for just one day and then go home. Las Vegas makes money from people who stay for several days and they spend money on a lot more than just gambling.

I can't believe they still built parking like this. it should be below surface.

underground parking takes too long and ends up being way more costly.

if city center had decided on underground parking, this project would take an extra 18-24 months to complete (having to drain out all the underground water etc) and thats a hell of a lot of lost money right there.

underground parking will become more prevalent in the future i suspect now that free land on the strip is becoming scarce

Herzarsen
December 19th, 2007, 07:06 PM
I think above ground parking is terrible as well. The city should make developers go undeground. This talk about costs I dont buy. Estetics is what should matter. Plus more land can be developed into useful structures rather then have it used up by pointless multi story ugly looking parking garage.

Vegas could be such an amazing place if they did things a little better. I also cant believe there are electrical wires above ground in the middle of the strip.

But I guess it all makes sense. Vegas is all about illusion of beauty rather then creating it. The key is what things look like inside so that you will not leave until you loose all your money! :D Plus they dont really want to build expensive well designed all thought out structures, because they know people will come anyways. Kinda sad but its true.

In addition, I also wonder what are they planning to do with traffic. These huge developments will add more cars. The traffic is already terrible now.

mdiederi

That argument doesn't hold water because this project happens to be the single most expensive privately funded construction project in U.S. history and will be LEED certified. There are several other projects here that are also some of the most expensive construction projects in history.

As for putting stuff underground, the ground here is really rock-hard caliche. Sullivan Square is using dynamite to remove it for their underground parking. Plus, down at the Strip the water table is very near the surface. And the amount of parking needed for these resorts is much, much, much larger than for regular condo or office towers in other cities. Imagine how big a hole you would need for 12,000 parking spaces, it would take a couple years just to dig it here. Now imagine all the toxic exhaust fumes down there from that many cars. Yuk.

mdiederi put it perfectly but let me add this car park will not be visible from the strip or I15 due to the power plant in front. The issue of how sturdy the ground under las vegas is should also be questioned after years of possibly thousands of underground nuclear tests less than 60 miles away, vegas is also near a major fault line and the risks of underground car parking should not be ignored after what happened in moscow last year http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article1578729.ece

Plus they dont really want to build expensive well designed all thought out structures, because they know people will come anyways. Kinda sad but its true.
yeah tell that to steve Wynn who spent $1.8 billion on Bellagio 10 years, $2.8 billion on building Wynn in 2005, Elad who are spending $7.8 billion on Plaza Las Vegas, Boyd who are spending $5 billion on Echelon and MGM who are spending $7.5 billion on this project, in comparison the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai seen by many as the worlds top hotel cost just $600 million and that included building a man-made island.

continuing on the parking theme, palazzo took over 18 months to dig a hole big enough for 4,500 car parking spaces and still that wasn't enough as they went ahead and built a multi-story surface car-park after that, it would take probably the best part of 3-4 years i assume to build an underground car-park capable of holding 12,000 cars

Maybe they haven't put in the main rail yet. just a suggestion. I mean if the rest of the city is already using a monorail and this is connecting to it, then you figure it would be a monorail and they just haven't put in the huge center rail yet.

February 12th, 2008, 01:31 PM
WTF!? Why?

well for one they are owned by two different companies and one is located behind LV Blvd

MGM already have a monorail that runs from Excalibur to Mandalay Bay and another form of transport that runs from TI to Mirage, in essence it wouldn't be that difficult to extend the system from TI to Mandalay Bay (the problem of course is Caesars Palace owned by Harrahs which sits in the middle of all the MGM owned properties.

rossie1977
February 14th, 2008, 02:26 PM
so all the owners are to full of themselves to come together to make a unified city tram system?

well its a little more complicated than that. Politics i.e the taxi drivers and limo drivers are the reason the monorail doesn't extend to the airport.

MGM want to keep their customers at MGM resorts so connecting up their system with the LV monorail would make little sense as only one of their resorts sit on that corridor, the MGM grand and most of the rest belong to their main rival Harrahs ie. paris, ballys, flamingo, imperial palace and harrahs itself

this map is about 3 years old and some of the hotels like boardwalk, frontier, stardust are now gone

http://i29.tinypic.com/cm3qs.jpg

The green line i drew is where the monte carlo/bellagio train will run, the purple lines show where mgm could link up the train with the their two other trains running mirage/TI and excalibur to mandalay. If they desire they could link up with the LV monorail between excalibur and mgm, that would mean crossing LV blvd which would be a huge task and not really worth it unless they are allowed extend the system to the airport (which MGM are currently in the process of trying to do but yet with no success :ohno:)

For the main tower, ~ 20 more floors since 40/60 floors are complete. Same for Vdara, but Veer, Harmon, and Mandarin Oriental are just off the ground and will take some time till they top out (mostly around 10/40 floors).

^^ Nope it is not in downtown Las Vegas. I think City Center is around 2 or 3 miles south of downtown Las Vegas area. I think they named this project, City Center because it has almost everything into one huge complex on one block. That made much sense to name it "City Center".

Dunes Hotel Golf Course? Are you sure? I remember that site was huge parking lot with small hotel complex with few small rides at the front. It was extremely unattractive complex.

It was a golf course many, many years ago... It went from the Dunes all the way down to Tropicana... It was torn up (and turned into a parking lot) when the Dunes was imploded to make way for the Bellagio...

Interesting. I didn't know that was golf course way before it became parking lots. I did know that Bellagio is on old Dunes resort site but didn't know that Dunes had a golf course too.

thats the old boardwalk hotel, legendary buffet, legendary for all the wrong reasons  http://www.inetours.com/Las_Vegas/images/Casinos/Boardwalk_1071.jpg

the boardwalk only sat on a tiny part of the city-center site, where the Mandarin Oriental high-rise sits today

the golf course is not gone that long this is a shot from 1990, you can see the dunes golf course just north of excalibur. Also notice across the road the site where MGM grand now sits was also a country club

WOW!!! I didn't see that before!!! I must admit that Las Vegas was much greener and little beautiful. It is sad that Las Vegas of today doesn't have much green spaces compared back in 1990. :( By the way, I'm glad that they got rid of this crappy Boardwalk resort.
