JFK is a huge airport with 9 terminals. I decided to tour all of them (except one that is closed). I think I made it to most terminals.

Terminal 1 is fairly nice. It's very spacious.

Now off to the next terminal!

http://www.globalphotos.org/newyork/20060818/IMG_0498.jpg

The Delta terminal is quite crappy. There is a long walk along the side to get to the entrance. I gave up after a little bit of it because that 'sidewalk' was very narrow and full of people.

Terminal 4 is by far the nicest terminal. It's even more spacious than Terminal 1 and quite new.

Terminal 5 is under renovation and reconstruction. It is the old TWA terminal.

Terminal 7 is fairly small, yet it looks fairly decent as well. JFK is not a very old airport it seems. They've done a lot of work restoring the terminals.

Just think how much better it could be. All that would be required is to blow up the existing terminals and build something along the lines of Hong Kong or Beijing for a terminal.
I see JFK slowly losing ground to larger/newer airports unless a real renovation/upgrade can be accomplished.
No offense to what is currently existing, I just think it could be so much better.

In case you havent notice they just completely renovated the entire airport.JFK is not losing its ground to larger airports. What airports is it losing ground to? I know people from as far away as Pennsilvania that fly out of this airport and they have no complaints.Everyone in the NYC area can agree for a New York airport that its the best.LaGuardia is a mess as well as Newark.

Great picture, I did also one time the tour of the 9 terminals. Terminal 4 is by far the nicest, then terminal 1. The Delta terminal looks crappy but s after the security check it is nicer and larger.

JFK has a really bizarre layout. I prefer Newark, more simpler and convient.

Beautiful pictures from an excellent and highly functional airport.

I know a lot of people love to hate JFK. I cannot understand why. It has got to be one of the most functional and user friendly airports. When you are driving there you can easily find the terminal that you have to use by searching on the billboards and each terminal is medium sized and not too chaotic despite the sheer numbers of people using the airport.

I flew from Terminal 1 from NYC to Istanbul - courtesy Turkish Airlines and the entire experience was smooth and seamless - I think JFK is the class act - at least Terminal 1

So if it is renovated why does it look like they threw a buch of smaller terminals together with no rhyme or reason?
What I was trying to say was maybe with a little more planning/continuity it wouldn't be way down on the list of world airports. If this is the best of the three maybe start with one of the others but please blow them up and start over!

Very nice pictures. How many passengers does JFK handle a year and where is it in the league table of busiest world airports?

What airline(s) will use the old TWT terminal when its back in operation.

I visited it a while ago and I didn't like it, it seemed a bit grubby and cramped and there was no transportation. Though one thing I did like at the time was it was halloween and all the staff were wearing costumes! that was quite a friendly touch.
looking at these pics after renovation seems like a different airport! :okay:

So, I see they only plan to finish half the check in area. Quite stupid indeed. Are there any plans in the future for some one else to perhaps finish it?

Jusy wondering how many runways does JFK have?

Thanks!Runways - The runway system consists of two pairs of parallel runways: 4L-22R, 4R-22L, 13L-31R and 13R-31L aligned at right angles. Total runway length is nearly nine miles. All runways have high intensity runway edge lighting, centerline and taxiway exit lighting, and are grooved to enhance safety.

Runway 4R-22L is 8,400 feet long and was recently widened to 200 feet wide and is equipped at both ends with Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Approach Lighting Systems (ALS) with sequenced flashers, and touchdown zone (TDZ) lighting.

Runway 4R is, and Runway 22L will soon be, commissioned as Category III A/L ILS runways, permitting landings with a visibility of 600 feet or more by qualified aircrews. Runway 22L ILS, recently upgraded to CAT III, will allow landings down to a visibility less than 1200 ft. RVR when commissioned in October 2003. Takeoffs can be made with visibility of one-eighth of a mile.

Runway 4L-22R is 11,351 feet long by 150 feet wide and is also equipped with ILS at both ends allowing landings down to three-quarters of a mile visibility. Takeoffs can be conducted with one-eighth of a mile visibility.

Runway 13L-31R is 10,000 feet long by 150 feet wide and is equipped at both ends with ILS and ALS systems. Runway 13L has two additional visual aids for landing aircraft, a Visual Approach Slope Indicator System (VASI) and a Lead-In Lighting System (LDIN). The ILS on 13L has Category II capability, and along with TDZ lighting, allows landings down to half a mile visibility. Takeoffs can be made with visibility of one-eighth of a mile.

Runway 13R-31L is 14,572 feet long by 150 feet wide, and is the second longest commercial runway in North America. Visual landing aids on 13R, including VASI and LDIN lighting systems, allow visibility conditions down to three-quarters of a mile. Takeoffs on Runways 13R and 31L can be made with visibility of one-eighth of a mile.

JFK has always had a unique look and feel due to the different architectural styles of the terminals. The photographer captures this nicely.

I am curious about Terminal 5 (The old TWA terminal). It looks like they are preserving the original curved terminal building and adding a new concourse beyond. Will this be JetBlue's space? I had the fortune of flying into this terminal at the end of the TWA days. I thought it was impressive, but somewhat small.

EDIT: I see another post on this. Glad to see the old TWA "futuristic" terminal preserved.

Even with this new renovation I find this airport along with most other US airport(except San Francisco) to be quite boring and dated compared with European and Asian airports. It seems that their ideas and design just stalled while the rest of the world kept moving forward.

^^ You make a good point.

But, some observations...

New York/New Jersey has three major airports, and the traffic is somewhat dispersed.

The Port Authority (they run JFK), has had their hands full the past five years since 9/11.

The improvements at JFK have been many. I give them credit for rebuilding essential componets of this airport despite the pressures outside the airport boundary. JFK will be just fine.

I agree to an extent, but look at the worlds' major cities and their airports:

New York - JFK
Los Angeles - LAX
London - Heathrow
Paris - Charles De Gaulle
Tokyo - Narita

All of these airports are neglected to an extent and built in small pieces that do not make a lot of sense from an organizational standpoint. It is just the way things are, and replacing them will take huge amounts of :2cents:
