A few of Virginia Beach from my last business trip. Didn't have much time. Can anybody tell me the history of the Cavalier?

I used to go there alot as a kid, but I don't recognize it now.
Typically, the term "Cavalier" referred to the high-born supporters of King Charles, who were fond of fashionable, extravagant clothing. Many cavaliers served in the cavalry under Prince Rupert, an archetypical cavalier. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalier)

Not sure exactly when The Cavalier Hotel opened, but it was there in the 1940's and was the premier hotel in the resort city for decades. In fact, it ranked up there with Hotel Roanoke, the Homestead in Hot Springs and The Chamberlin at Old Point Comfort (Hampton) among Virginia's finest hotels.
Big bands played for dancing in The Cavalier Beach Club across Atlantic Avenue on the Beach. At one time, Interurban rail cars from Norfolk terminated there.
Thanks for the great fotos of Virginia Beach. Did you visit VB Town Center 10 miles or so inland from the Beach? It is similar in layout and style to Reston in Nova and wil be home to the tallest building in Virginia when the Westin Hotel is completed next year. Richmond holds that title until then with the Monroe state office building at about 450 feet.

Thanks guys!
Thanks Burt for the info on the Cavalier! Great hotel! I did make it to the Town Center as I had business near there. Have some photos somewhere here I should post. Just amazing that VB is building an entire "city center" where none existed. Cool development! The whole VB/Norfolk/Newport News area is one of my favorites on the East Coast. Hope to make it back in the next couple of months. :)

Virginia Beach looks great. I have relatives down there but have never had the chance to visit them at their home or see Virginia Beach.
Virginia Beach looks a lot like the beach towns in Delaware. The difference is that the beach towns in Delware function as separate towns, whereas Virginia Beach is one big city. It's like combining all of the Delaware beaches inot one big city. None of the Delaware beach towns have highrises quite as high as Virginia Beach's highrises along the beach.

Virginia Beach has always stood out among beach communities because the boardwalk lacks boards... has it always been like that?

The first Va. Beach boardwalk was constructed in 1888 and was made of wood. The 1920's is when they made it concrete.

Nice...
I never went to VA beach myself, but my father did, for a business trip a few years back, he loved it...
