I recently bought a Canon Powershot A430 and the Aperture Range is f/2.8 (W) - f/5.8 (T). There must be some way to adjust the range when your shooting, but I don't know how to right now. I know what Aperture is and what it does, I just need to know how to control it.

You can change it in A - aperture mode or M - manual mode.Read manual mate :)

I don't see those modes....

It's not even in the index, i've checked many times.

I don't know if this helps, but this is my camera.

If your camera has a manual setting ("M"), you can change the aperture setting, it would appear on the bottom of the screen when the camera is on "manual", and then you can change it while in picture taking mode. If your camera has no manual mode, you probably can't change it.

It probably is just an automatic aperture.

F2.8-F5.8 refers to the max aperture only. Since your camera has no A (or M) mode, you can't adjust aperture.

Time to upgrade? I just bought it. :P It's not that big of a deal anyway, just wondered if it was possible. It's still a great camera.

You don't need an SLR for aperture control.....

I'm almost totally clueless in photography, but maybe that (W) means wideangle, and that (T) - telephoto (that is, zoom) and the aperture is minimum when the zoom is at the max (conversely, no zoom gives maximum aperture). I own a compact camera similar to yours and I don't have found a way either to modify the aperture indipendent of the level of zoom (that's why it is called a 'compact' camera and not a full-fledged camera, I guess). Anyway I have to thank you, I took a chance to document myself on this topic...
So for anyone interested,

I believe that the mode that shows a M with a half a camera is basically the manual mode on that and other Canon digicams. Turn to that mode and see what your alternatives are. You may not be able to chose the exact f/stop, but it may have a low light setting or something like that, which would probably use the F/2.8 aperture setting.

Basically, you want to read the manual and see what you can alter in the Manual mode. :)
