View Full Version : Halifax kills Commonwealth Games bid, national organizer furious at decision
Haligonian March 31st, 2007, 03:30 AM Even if they did have funding committments, it seems unlikely that the CWG people would seriously consider it at this point.
The entire handling of this was mind-bogglingly poor.
mr.x March 31st, 2007, 06:21 AM The bid's image has already been tarnished.....there's no point. Look at the NYC 2012 Olympic Bid....they couldn't finalize a Olympic Stadium plan until the final hour, about 2 weeks 'till the IOC decision. It hurt them a bit.
Jim Jones WINS!!!!!! March 31st, 2007, 01:48 PM IT is a dead horse to dismount as barry barnett the provincial Cabinet minister has said.
Mo to a realistic bid I think you have to have set of venues first to mount a bid and that has been the problem with venue development in canada in general .
To get the venues some feel it is the only way to fund it. The commonwealth games is really meaningless and without merit here. 1.7 billion for 165 million in revenues is not a business deal any private company would look to mount.
A commonwealth games is best left to cities like glasgow, abuja ,durban ,london sydney or any of the cities in the commonwealth with sports parks.
with a 60 million dollars a day plus operating expense tab you really have to have everything on the ground when you mount a bid or be in the proceed of constructing. JET SET FRED was going to have construction started in 2010 and that is the same folly montreal had for the games of 1976. It sets you up for surprizes in both materials and labour. starting conruction 4 years in advance just allows different elements in construction to extort money from you as you are against a deadline.
Hey halifax always has Billy Talent to look forward to ROTFLMAO

I dont think its necessary to have all venues in place before bidding, I think if Halifax had used a sensible approach to developing venues as part of the commonwealth games plan and not separately it would have been able to present something decent. Halifax was never going to win, but it could have been successful in gaining valuable funding for much needed sports facilities.
IMO, the only "costly" venue would be the main stadium,
temporary indoor arenas are more than enough, an astral pool and temporary seating is more than enough for the commies..u only need 3,000 or more seats..
an outdoor velodrome is also fine,
the real issue is whether halifax wanted to host a "flasy" "frills and fuss" games or if it was able to keep it simple. I would really love to see a breakdown of the venue costs, I could probably cut a few millions off that budget
isaidso April 5th, 2007, 07:03 PM Steeltown has got it right. If you want the Commonwealth Games, you need to cough up some money. 2014 is done, but in the future a bid is feasible.
Halifax is fooling itself if it thinks it can win a bid using high school gyms for basketball, and a 30,000 seat main stadium. Multi-sport events are getting bigger and bigger in a hurry. The Commonwealth Games are not going to award it to a city with infrastructure that is so small. It might have worked in Victoria in the 90's, but times have changed.
Beijing is spending $50 Billion. I realize that is a massive city, and alot of that is subway lines, and it's the Olympics, but $1.7 Billion is not considered much to work with. Halifax may be small, but these athletes are still going to want to get around on subways and compete in proper facilities...not make shift stadium that is 60% temporary.
Melbourne spent many billions. It's stadium seats closer to 100,000. Delhi will be much the same. The Commonwealth might consider 60,000. 30,000? No way!

I agree and disagree with you. Each city needs to produce a plan that fits their budget, a 40,000 seat stadium is fine for a CWG, Halifax might have had a limited budget, but again I believe its failure was more to do with its lack of creativity in using this budget and producing something presentable than its lack of money.

The main stadium is 50,000 seats, and would be downsized to 30,000 after the Games. Kuala Lumpur, Manchester, and Melbourne spent billions on their Commonwealth Games purely to satisfy their failed attempts to bid for the Summer Olympics.
The Hamilton 2010 bid also had high schools as venues in its bid.

But now 1998,2002 and 2006 are all the standards to be met and it is not going to downgrade for Halifax purposes with city like Abuja and Glasgow biding.
Halifax would not win anyways and would have been a spoiler to any chance Glasgow would have against Abuja. Abuja has a very strong technical standard that they constructed their venues.
New Delhi 2010 is not going to be a downsizing either as they are trying to demonstrate sport festival largess to try to forward the city towards a future Olympic bid. Much can be said for Abuja as well.

isaidso April 9th, 2007, 02:48 AM The point is that the CWG has gotten used to a certain standard of size and prestige. Halifax needs to recognize that. What's the point of investing money and effort into a bid that will probably lose? It's a basic business rule: know what your customer wants! The customer here being the CWG.
mr.x: ok, 50,000 does sound more reasonable, but high school gyms? Just because Hamilton proposes the same thing doesn't make it wise in either instance. Perhaps plans like that led to Hamilton's failed bid.

high school gyms wont work..the answer : temporary arena's, build dismantle relocate.
