LAHORE: For the first time, a Pakistani girl has participated in an international beauty pageant, reports website DesPardes.com.

Houston-based Pakistani-American Mariyah Moten, 22, represented Pakistan at the “Miss Bikini of the Universe” pageant held in Beihai, a summer resort city in south China, on August 28.

Moten won the “Best in Media” title (trophy plus sash), as being the most photographed and interviewed girl in the entire pageant. Since the pageant, she has been on Zee News, Khaleej Times, China Daily, Hangzhou Newspaper and various other newspapers in China and elsewhere.

She was born and brought up in Karachi, Pakistan, and moved to the United States with her family eight years ago. She is currently studying hotel management at the University of Houston in Texas, where she did her high schooling.

“It’s the first time that Pakistan is participating in the bikini pageant, as we’re an Islamic country,” Moten was quoted as saying by China Daily. “Now there’s less reproach in Pakistan on women’s participation in such beauty contests. All my family support me and I’m excited to have the chance to participate in the event.”

Competing with 44 delegates, Moten was given the award on the final night. This is the second award she has received in her pageant career. She won “Miss Charity” at the Miss Tourism Queen International pageant in July 2006.

The winner was crowned “Queen Pearl” and received $5,000 in prize money; second and third place earned the title “Miss Pearl,” and received $3,000 and $2,000 respectively, according to the pageant’s organising committee. Moten is presently in Mumbai on a “special interview” assignment with the Times of India, her manager told DesPardes.com over the phone.

Well, I have to admit... this bikini contest is not appropriate. For a civilization that has historically pride itself on modesty and tradition, this is not at all appropriate.

An analogy for me (personally) is that if a terrorist from FATA comes and say, "I represent Pakistan in this terror competition."... i have to ask him, "Who gave you the mandate to represent Pakistan"?

Apparently, the government reserves the "intellectual property right" on the word "representing Pakistan". Moreover, I think we should be principled in our approach.... Vulgarity should not be accepted, in the name of "moderation". This image is a little too "soft".

Type in something like "xxx" or "naked" or "nude" or "call girl" and you will see most of the traffic for such keywords on google is from Pakistan or India :P (Under the region tab , not the city tab)

whats interesting though is even for "bollywood" or bollywood celebrities , pakistan is right there at top !

I am very well aware of what happens in the Pakistani internetcafe's. The Pakistani men make great abuse of the wonderful world of internet by watching porn and other vulgarity. But that doesn't mean Pakistan isn't an Islamic country. There are lots of men and women who behave correctly. Not every men or women has fallen. We need to step up and condemn this kind of vulgarity because one it is not our culture and two we are an Islamic state.

Lately there is a big problem rising in the muslimworld. Men and women get frustrated by all the beautiful men and women appearing in the media. It has come to a point that they cannot control themselves. I think we need to discuss this. At one side Pakistanis watch every new hollywood/bollywood movie, but on the other side we strongly divide the line between men and women.

If somebody doesnt like this bikini clad girl then why cant you just look away? It is her life and her body and she also just so happens to be Pakistani, I believe thats the only prerequisite to represent your country on an International forum. So if this girl wants to wear a bikini and prance around then it is her decision to make. She isnt telling your wives or daughters to do the same, is she? Just calm down . Google trends ranks the regions for a given keyword based on the proportion of internet surfers , looking for such keywords . Thus , its likely that a higher proportion of internet surfers in pakistan look for such words than the proportion of indian or chinese surfers . Chinese also use mandarin etc to surf the net, which could have excluded them from using english keywords . Arab countries filter out such words too .

Anyways , sex being a taboo in south asia , the internet gives them a escapist way to channelise their fantasies .
