WOW, great collection! Bratislava looks both pleasant and dynamic city on your photos. I've always admire that Jewish house near St.Martin church.
BTW, I'm sure that highway going from SNP bridge to the Old Town (beside St.Martin church) will be covered in tunnel in near future, I even saw some project about it some time ago. Guys from Slovakia could tell us more about it.

It's not highway, it's Staromestská street and I haven't heard about the tunnel there however it sounds very interresting. What's your source of information? There is already one tunnel near this place for trams under the Castle hill. I've made small research using Google maps and this is where the tunnel could be (between the pink lines):

Yes, that's the place. I've read it in some magazine, most probably Construction Journal for central europe some year ago. It was just study but that shows that intentions to hide that busy street under ground exists. There were even some houses planned to build on it, of course respecting height of neighbouring houses.

It's very good idea and I think it could be realised quite cheaply because Staromestská street is under the ground level so they should place there the concrete sections of the tunnel, build there some small buildings and make a park or a boulevard there. They cannot build there some massive structures because there would be the tunnel under it. Maybe it will be realised during revitalisation of area under the castle on riverbank.

yes, this tunnel project exist. but there are some deal problems between investor and city council, because above tunnel, investor want to build many buildings and city council wants more free space such as squares.

Very good thread, btw, what I don´t like in Bratislava Old City is the Čumil statues, I think old center deserves something more representative. In old city has almost every historical building a bit different style, you can find hardly some, which is the same. For modern Bratislava is probably the most important part the downtown in the near of tower115, where Eurovea is built. ST building, Orange, Apollo Business center, Bratislava business centers I-V, Spp building and others together with Eurovea, new National Theater /opening ceremony is planned to take place in April/ and tower 115 and other projects and constructions will form a nice and modern part of the city.

Great City, again I stress how its very similar to Tallinn (although it seems Bratislava had it better off in the beginning of the 20th cent). Although it seems Bratislava has many faces, as seen from this thread and the people saying it looks like this or that ;)

While Tallinn generated in the 1900s alot of wealth, had many industries, the owners of the factories didnt really care alot about Tallinn and all the wealth went to St.Petersburg, Helsinki or Riga, so we didnt get Art Noveau city blocks/quarters like you see in Helsinki or Riga... Bratislava also didnt get that many big art noveau quarters, as i see, but still more then Tallinn ...

Well, don´t forget that Bratislava was between 1531-1783(or 1830 - the end of coronations in BA) capital of Hungarian empire. But its best period was between 1713 - 1780 development of trade, new buldings and palaces were built and it was also important cultural place...So if this would last to early 20th century Bratislava will be more like Vienna or Budapest today.

I´ve never been to Tallinn (but I´d like to go this year) so it´s hard to compare it with BA for me. If you´re saying that not many buildings were built or destroyed by communists I guess you´ve never been to Bratislava too...;)

Bratislava had a 80 000 inhabitants at the begining of the 20th century. It fact, it was small city. After 2WW 150 000, 1976 - 250 000 and now 425 000. So practically commie blocks for almost 200 000 people had to be built.
Bratislava survived a lot of wars, but the worst part of history city experienced during communist regime. Around 1/3 of historical center was demolished. Commie blocks were built by lego system. For instance, Petrzalka(district with 120 000 inhabitants) has only 4 types of commie blocks. Schools and kindergardes are all the same. Now the city has so many negative legacies, which will take a lot of decades to fix them at least partially.
