GlasgowMan September 5th, 2006, 05:48 PM Looks really impressive and big! Will all traffic from Berlin Tegel and Schunefield operate from this new airport? How many passengers is it expected to handle in its first year of operations etc?
Rachmaninov September 5th, 2006, 06:53 PM Forgive me for my ignorance. I've never heard of this project!
Could anybody tell me about the airport and its facilities?

Schönefeld is being expanded to become Airport Berlin Brandenburg International. Tegel and Tempelhof will be closed when BBI is finished.
2005: Schönefeld, Tegel, Tempelhof: 17.2 million passengers
2011: BBI approx. 22 million passengers
GNU September 6th, 2006, 12:32 PM ^^ Well its not sure if Tegel is going to be closed is it?

Basically its just a new airport that will be built on the site of the old Schoenefeld airport (one of 3 airports in Berlin)
It is necessary to built the BBI because Berlin hasnt go a real international airport so far.
Schoenefeld itself is tiny and rather outdated.
The city needs a new airport to catch up with the growing tourist market and to remain interesting for investors.
Nephasto September 7th, 2006, 01:05 AM ^How will that terminal in the middle of the aircraft parking slots will be connected to the main terminal?
From what I've heard, that fancy bridge won't be build.
el tico September 7th, 2006, 01:40 AM A new airport for Berlin? The rendering with the bridge over the planes looks pretty futuristic. Looks cool!
Mr. Fusion September 7th, 2006, 02:19 AM ^^ The bridge walkway has been cut from the final plans. :(
A lot of the information about BBI is in the threads hkskyline posted. It appears his airport is one of those topics that generates interest every two months or so and then...

Manu84 September 9th, 2006, 03:33 PM a really nice proyect
staff September 9th, 2006, 08:16 PM Frightening, since it will be a competitor to CPH! :)
Novak September 9th, 2006, 08:34 PM Oh my! It looks _very_ impressive. :)
Skoulikimou September 9th, 2006, 08:45 PM smart layout
Tomesh September 9th, 2006, 09:47 PM Frightening, since it will be a competitor to CPH! :)
Well not really since afaik LH is not interested in making BBI a hub. I guess regarding LH and longhaul its just going to be feeder traffic to FRA or MUC.
staff September 10th, 2006, 09:57 AM Tomesh,
But I'm guessing that BBI will get a lot more long-haul routes from foreign carries than the three current airports get today, right?
Although I'm aware of the fact that it won't get the hub status that FRA, MUC or even CPH enjoys.
Tomesh September 11th, 2006, 07:54 PM ^^ I really wonder if many different carriers are going to start opening BBI routes... its gonna be interesting and I guess only time will tell. Berlin and the surrounding areas are not particularly rich, nor are there many business travellers atm so i wonder how it is going to grow....
RSG September 12th, 2006, 03:10 PM Looks good. If this is supposed to be the international airport, will two runways be enough?? I guess it will depend on flight paths and restriction hours.
