Very near the towers they are preparing this obelisk by Calatrava.

Pictures by Aalto.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/851/90190162nw3.jpg

We madrileños obviously know it, but let's keep clear that you see in those pics is just the "squeleton" of the obelisk; it will supposely have movable parts that will shine in addition with the sun.

Santiago Calatrava.

The obelisk of Plaza de Castilla has been designed by the valencian architect Santiago Calatrava, author of buildings like the Turning Torso and the Chicago Spire. It is being installed on Plaza de Castilla (where the leaning towers of Puerta de Europa are placed) Yesterday the last piece of the obelisc was installed reaching the height of 92 meters. The obelisk will be covered with 504 bars made of ormolu, which will give the monument a golden appearence. Each bar will have a hidraulic mechanism that will make a soft movement wich will be transmited to the next bar. The objective is to feel that a wave is ascend along its surface.
It will be finished on september of this year.

el meco, Foster tower is not a copy of your tower in Mty, it just look a little similar in some aspects, but it is not at all a copy: is doesn't get thiner on top, is has no painting covering it (is has metal instead), and colours are way different (both in windows and covers).

Saying that Foster's tower is a copy of this Mexican tower is like saying that any box shaped skyscraper is a copy of any skyscraper on the 6th avenue in NYC...

i know what you mean, but anyway, i want people to know how things are, not how some people think that things are: i don't see Foster copying this Mexican tower to bring it to spain. In fact, i see himself like thinking about his project in frankfurt (Deutsche Bank tower) and changing it to make it fresher and with a new style to create a new design... that's nearer to reality.

That area almost in the outskirts (in fact, it was the outskirts merely a few decades ago and back then there was next to nothing built there). There are several other skyscrapers in the AZCA area lying about two miles towards the south (i.e., to the right in the picture) from the CTBA and almost none of it is visible in that shot. There are also half a dozen other notable highrises and a TV tower in areas not far from the city centre but many miles away from the CTBA area. One would need to collage many shots together into a wide panoramic view to capture the full north-to-south skyline. And anyway, some of the existing highrises don't look very prominent from the distance because Madrid stands on a very hilly area and lowrises standing on top of hills can obstruct the view and disguise the real height of the highrises from many angles.

Im from Madrid and the city is better and better with the time..

The mayor and the regional government are doing a good work, cos the national administration is doing nothing for Madrid.

We have more (and better) public transport, especially underground, we are developing a nice web of cicling lines, the city is becoming greener (with new huge parks but also planting trees in every corner of the city..

These new towers are a good symbol of this change, but are just a little part of it...

When the new Convention Center the place will be amazing!!!

And the small buildings in front of CTBA too.

Yes, that does seem unusual. Perhaps BMW was doing a promotion related to the opening of these new towers?

it's funny how one's taste changes constantly... at the beginning of the construction i didn't like torre repsol that much while now it's definetely my favourite. im wondering what does it depend on and does it have anything to do generally with the my other opinions that also change during the years...

Anyways 4 torres look stunning, i can't take my eyes of them anytime i see some new great shots...

Yes, there is a plan to build lots of highscrapers in some years, but now it´s stopped for lack of money.

Apart from that, in the middle of the four towers there will be a building for company meetings of 100 meters high.

Hola a todos!
Estuve en Madrid el 14 y 15 de Agosto! Y me encanto!

Their loneliness is their beauty. They wouldn't be the same if they add more buildings around them

That looks like the highly disputed Operacion Chamartin ? If that plan goes ahead it would certainly move Madrid into becoming a great architectural reference world wide concerning skyscrapers .

Operación Chamartín (next to CTBA) will be a big skyscrapers area with 15-20 tall towers, some tallers than CTBA, and the amazing CICCM (125m) will be near CTBA too.
There are at least 4 +100m towers in the area under construction or approved but not near CTBA.

I don´t know if there is a thread for this obelisk, but as they´re near the four towers I´ll show these pictures here. The author is Calatrava and it moves. These days they´re testing the movement and next December it´ll be inaugurated by the Spanish king.

They were made by Jorge and Aalto.

And more pictures by m3c.

Pictures don't make it any justice, is a moving mechanical obelisc. Here is a nice video of it while in the testing stages. If anyone notice the chicago spire had one of these in its renders.

I do agree the location is not the best it takes some away from the kio towers in my opinion. Still i think is cool.

Exactly, and we´re in a forum about architecture, so somebody answered him talking about architecture, which is purpose of SSC, not football. Plus the buildings are something permanent, not like a football match. I prefer to have 4 real skyscrapers and that Real Madrid have lost the match against Barça, hahaha.

Like Buho said, it´s a good reason to come back. Madrid has changed so mucho during the last decade. New tube (300 kms. of lines), new skyscrapers, new museums of Nouvel, Herzog and others, new theaters, new obelisk, new heaquarters of Telefónica and others, new public dwellings, the biggest gay pride of Europe (2.000.000 people on the street), etc. Come to enjoy it!
