Hi all.

To me this seems to have slowed down in the last month or so. How many floors have they added to the core, almost none it seems.

Hi google.

Just before 11 04 08 they added another set of 2 level high columns - the top of those are just above the floor of level 17. They have jumped the core form again as well.

Probably won't be until the end of the year, as you need some good space between new construction of floors and the fragile glass. That's purely speculation though.

Tell me about a few floors between the new floors and the fragile glass, here in the Third Worls there's a building called 600 Brickell and it topped out over a year ago but it's still not done. To this day they're still breaking windows on it while working on the interior. One is spiderwebbed right now and a bunch are plywooded over.

I remembered that when SWFC reached 30-40 floors(the core was around 40th fl.), there were about 10 floors with facade installed. Since Nordschleife mentioned ST would reach its 36th fl by the end of this year, I was wondering if we could see some facade before that. But they are different towers, and ST facade is much more complicated, so I guess it probably will take longer to install.

Some people follow this thread more closely than other people. It is easier and takes less time for us to answer the question than having the person flipping pages through the thread in order to find the answer himself. Having been asked numerous times only shows that people on this forum are genuinely interested in skyscraper constructions :)

clyde the puffy cat
April 23rd, 2011, 08:07 AM
I think there'll be a lot of people on this site getting a "fat" when this ones done...including me:lol:

^^ Seriously though, I think ST will have a fairly thin aspect ratio(height to width ratio)when it's completed.
Looking at the plan Nordscheife just posted, ST proper( not including the shopping area on the first 5 or so levels)
is approx 90 metres wide at the base, tapering to about 60 metres wide at the top, so bout an average of 75 metres wide with a height of 630 metres:nuts:, it 's average height to width ratio is about 9:1 or about 7:1 from the base.
Just as a comparison the Sears Tower in Chicago is 442 m high and a width at base of approx 69 metres, which works out to a ratio of about 6.5:1.

Don't worry, when this thing is up, with its twisting shape and ENORMOUS SIZE, it'll be the envy of many!

I hate how shanghai tower makes swfc look so small and i hate how swfc makes jinmao look so small hahahaha

Will the shanghai tower be that tall? I think when the tower is completed, it will resemble more of the planned cbd that the gov has. At the moment, besides oriental pearl, it doesn't look that resembling lol

^^ very impresive, for the first time i visited shanghai in 2006, jinmao was the tallest and i paid 100 rmb to enjoy the view on top, then in 2010 i found swfc right behind jinmao, couldnt help myself again, i went to a travel agency then i enjoyed the view on 94th 97th and 100th floor, i think next time i will be on shanghai tower, just waiting.........
funny enough, when i was at shanghai peoples square i saw swfc and i thought it was near so i walked towards it, damn, i didnt know it was far away and i had to cross a river, LOL, but i enjoyed a boat ride too, with a spectacular view of skyscrapers, cant forget that experience

I don't think a building taller than Shanghai Tower would be that great in Lujiazui - ST will already dwarf every single building around it without an even taller building; looking at that picture/render above you wouldn't guess that Jinmao was over 400m!

A couple more supertalls between 300-400 would be nice to give the skyline more variation - atm there are loads of 180-250m buildings then the big 3. There's probably no more plots left though!

There can be another tall tower in Shanghai, it is a good place for them, only it is when it will happen. Maybe a stalinist tower would look good + make the country's ideology look good too.

http://pic.gaoloumi.com/attachments/day_110422/1104222026a9ab2aa30e44681b.jpg

Could someone who knows this project well please explain:

How are the 128 storeys counted ?

I counted through the floors on the diagram, and get 120, maybe plus or minus 1 or 2.

I know that some Chinese buildings skip certain numbers that have 4's in them, but with that, I would come up with a different number.

Is it possible that by the time the whole structure is in place, that it may acquire additional floors above 128 ? This has happened with many well-known tall buildings recently. ( I can't quote names on here. )

Next question:

At this early stage, does anyone know what the elevator configuration will be ?

Thank you

I guess they can build another supertall in Puxi, somewhere around Jin'an or Xujiahui. They can somehow sorta achieve the Hong Kong ICC and the 2IFC effect :p

Hi Library - fancy meeting you here ... :)

Looks to me there is no ground level - the count starts at level 1 and doesn't skip any. The other plans I have say 120 levels. The 128 includes the parapet and will not be the official CTBUH count IMO. It's like the count of 205 for the BK, or 163 for India Tower - just an equivalent number if there were levels right to the top - which there aren't.

Elevator info - thanks to Helghast for the find.

This building doesn't look as though it thins out too dramatically as it goes up though, unlike the burj for example. The core must thin out a lot as it gets higher though, so by the time it gets up near the business end the ratio should be a lot more favourable.

Those condos are already the most expensive in the world... somewhere around $25k+ a square meter. I remember one sold a couple years back at well over $30k a square meter. There are quite a few units left vacant in Tomson Riviera, and I remember reading that they are trying to limit sales to 1-2 units a month to try and get more when the market recovers.

I think it's just because the podium/base will be so massive and important to supporting the building, they must take extra care. Also, if I recall correctly, right now, the core is at the sky garden level, which probably also takes lots of care to construct properly. So yeah. After the podium is finished, it'll probably shoot up. But every couple months when they hit the sky garden, it'll slow down a bit again.

Just my thoughts and predictions :)

Hi all.

Wow - lots of work going on.

Here is a drawing of the radial trusses they are installing now.

http://i52.tinypic.com/v7f41y.jpg

As we can see, they extend out to the outer curtainwall - hense they don't form a round shape. The outside edges of the supercolumns are where the round inner curtainwall will be. All of the levels except the first of each zone will be the size of the inner wall. The first level of each zone will extend to the outer wall - these will be the sky garden levels.

The radial trusses are on level 7 forming the floor of level 8 sky garden which is the first level of zone 2.
Here is a shot from January (from Mori I think) I've labelled.

http://i52.tinypic.com/2heaw6f.jpg

The next radial truss level is 21 with level 22 as a sky garden and the first level of zone 3.

Considering the magnitude of wind force on a curtainwall, it is amazing that these days they can construct a curtainwall that is only anchored every 20 floors or so. That curtain of glass must flex almost as much as a real curtain in high winds.

Hi Traynor.

The radial trusses are there to anchor the outer wall and to support the floor of the sky gardens between the inner and outer walls.

The outer wall is also anchored at every level in a number of places around the perimeter.

Wow that is a huge amount of empty space. That must be one of the apexes in the curtain wall. Also pretty optimistic looking occupants if this is to be a public space

Maybe something like this is a little more realistic:

http://www.podiumpundits.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/homeless-bums-tramps41.gif

In architecture there is a HUGE difference between "public" space and what may truly be public space (like a road level park). When a good amount of architects use the word "public space" they simply mean a service area (ie, a kitchen or living room in a house) versus a "private space" that would be a bedroom or separated study. In an office building this could be compared to a lobby and an executive office room or conference room.

Or the render is just designed by an American firm, who use western people standardly.
Like they have those figures in some database, but they just don't have Chinese people in there.
And this is just a detail, it's not about the people, but about the building so who cares if that's not totally right :)

I think there will be a lot of westerners in Shanghai Tower just like in SWFC. Firms that can afford to rent a floor in such buildings are most likely to be multinational.

I was granted a unique opportunity to visit the site of the Shanghai Tower. I was allowed access to the top floor of construction (18th floor). I took a lot of pictures and I will be uploading them shortly.

Your'e correct

Its the real situation that counts, just like ICC in Hong Kong, lots of foreigners in the renders, mainly occupied by Chinese anyways, which makes sense. Renders give a good indication about how the place will look like when built.

Another odd thing about that render: Look at the level they seem to be at. Now look at the Oriental Pearl! It looks 1600M tall! Does the perspective seem correct?

Nothing wrong with the render since Shanghai tower is a lot closer.

Yes, but in real life does it tower over those other buildings like that? I thought the CBD had grown so tall that the Pearl blends in with others.

Pearl tower still dominates the Pudong's skyline from the bund anyway.
But from some other angles, like this one, it's a whole different story.

Forget about the background, its as dodgy as the people in the renders. When was the oriental pearl tower to the 'RIGHT' of bank of china building? Between Shanghai tower and Oriental pearl, there should be Jin Mao and IFC and then the TV tower and then the huangpu river, not the other buildings that below to the other side of century park. Am i right?

The main thing about that render is the interior, the pearl tower and bank of china buildings are there merely to remind us that this building is in Shanghai, ie, they are iconic. Thats all

Hi all.

Great update.

The top down work on the lower levels outside the excavation circle looks to be at least 2 levels deep throughout the site.
Most likely deeper than that but we can't see.
The plans show 5 lower levels almost the size of the entire site.

We need more of the Bund tower... shots of that would be nice. For Lujiazui, get some from the East... its rather rare to see a picture of the cluster from the back side, normally all you get is shots from the Bund and other areas of Puxi, or cheesy shots from the Pearl tower.

I realized the same thing. Perhaps those residential towers can be demolished and be replaced with taller towers of a better design!
