torke September 7th, 2006, 10:16 PM It depends on what statistics are you talking about, if you post the ones for 2006, Madrid has overpassed Amsterdam.
Madrid Barajas January-July 2006: 25.710.627 passengers.
Amsterdam Schipol January-July: passengers.
(I dont know exactly the number of passengers from January-July 2006 in Schipol, I am searching for them, I'll post it later, but I am sure there are less in Amsterdam than in Madrid between those dates)
picassoborseli October 1st, 2006, 10:27 PM A nice promo movie of 3 minutes of the new Barajas Airport Terminal 4 @ Madrid:

Although Madrid is growing fast and it is doing very well, it has not overtaken Amsterdam in the list yet:

Madrid Barajas International Airport
By Richard Rogers Partnership

In this dramatic new airport terminal, the ceiling—rolling sine waves of bamboo-clad steel—is held up by brightly painted columns, and there's sunlight everywhere. Rogers's design is "reminiscent of a sailboat or a classic ship," the jury remarked. "There's a lightness to it—a buoyancy." From arrival halls to check-in, from security to departure, spaces are clearly organized and easy to navigate, unified by the soaring central corridor.

The building presents a straightforward linear diagram, in the form of a clear sequence of spectacular spaces for both departing and arriving passengers. The parallel linear floor planes are separated from each other by dramatic, light-filled canyons across which bridges span.
A restrained and functional approach is consistently applied to great effect, resulting in a visually clean, remarkably uncluttered and soothing environment.

Mr. Fusion October 15th, 2006, 12:26 AM Terminal 4 is INCREDIBLE!!!
However it is only one part of the airport. The majority of airlines that serve Barajas are still operating out of this:

It will take more than "cosmetic" updates to help the old terminals. :toilet:
The thread title says that the airport is "expanding" and there is no mention of expansion here. Are there plans to replace T1 T2 T3 with a new terminal that have not been mentioned?
:grouphug:
ROM999 October 15th, 2006, 03:25 AM They are going to be completely remodeled, so each one of them can handle international flights. Interiors and exteriors are going to have major cosmetic work, using new materials so they look like they were just built.
torke October 15th, 2006, 11:05 AM T4 is used by (AERLINGUS, AEROFLOT, AIR ALGERIE, AIR NOSTRUM, AIR SENEGAL, AMERICAN AIRLINES, AIR CAIRO, AVIANCA, BRITISH AIRWAYS, CATHAY PACIFIC, CSA CZECH AIRLINES, EGYPT AIR, EL AL, FINNAIR, IBERIA, IBERWORLD, JAPAN AIRLINES, LAN CHILE, LAN ECUADOR, LUXAIR, MAERSK AIR, MALEV HUNGARIAN AIRLINES, OLYMPIC AIRLINES, QATAR AIRWAYS, ROYAL AIR MAROC, ROYAL JORDANIAN AIRLINES, SN BRUSSELS AIRLINES, STERLING, SYRIAN ARAB AIRLINES, TAROM, TRANPORTES AEREOS DE CABO VERDE, TURKISH AIRLINES, UKRANIE INTERNATIONAL, VIRGIN EXPRESS and VUELING) a few less airlines than T1, T2 or T3 but it moves more than 60% of passengers in Barajas because the main airline of the Airport (IBERIA) flights to it.

Madrid's Barajas Airport has won the UK's most prestigious architecture award, the £20,000 Stirling Prize.
The colourful 1.2km-long Spanish airport building was designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership.
It is the first time the firm has won the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) prize.
The prize is awarded to architects for the building that has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.
'Spectacular spaces'
The judges said of the design: "Whatever the means of approach, by air or by land, the sheer scale and complexity of what has been tackled and achieved here cannot be overestimated.
