well it's that time....time to show if we really want our own subforum. Ashok, Suncity and few other MODs recently contacted me and asked me to start a thread like the one they have for Sri Lanka. Here is a chance for us Bangladeshis to show if we really want our own subforum. Go ahead and leave comments, suggestions, etc.

It would be great to have a Bangladeshi Subforum.I will continue to actively participate/post in order to keep it running.Hope all our Bangladeshi friends share a similar view,so that we finally have a sub forum of our own.

I think a sub-forum would be good because we could have all the threads under one roof so to speak. Also, the old threads won't get lost.

The only thing I am worried about is that we will lose some traffic as people will not see us right on top of the page, just one click away. Still, people who are actually interested should still continue to come, I know I will. I'd say let's go for it. :)

My two cents on this is that we would lose a lot of exposure. Currently, many non-Bangladeshis visit the general forum and end up seeing a lot about how our country is developing. Once you move to a Bangladesh only forum, the only people who visit would be those who have deep interest in Bangladesh, i.e. mostly Bangladeshis. How many of you Bangladeshis, for example, visit other country forums? On the other hand, the general forum draws a much larger crowd and you thus get much more exposure. I would prefer keeping things as they are.

ya i am bangladeshi and i am all for a bangladeshi sub forum. Just because there would be a bangladeshi sub forum doesnt mean there wouldnt still be threads about bangladesh in the general asian forum and a bangladeshi sub forum would allow us to discuss topics related to bangladesh which probably will not be suitable for the general asian forum so ya i am for it.

Hello everyone I believe that the time has arrived for our own section. I would like to thank all those who have contributed to the forum especially the most valiant efforts of Tmac, mirzaheen and others. By having our section it will show the rest of the world that how important Bangladesh is to to have its own forum and indeed Dhaka can take its right place in the league of mega cities of which I am so proud of. We still have a lot to achieve but I have no doubt in my mind that we will reach there god willing.

A subforum would be great idea. Most of the threads on Bangladesh are of little interest to the general population of this site, but are very to welcome to people like me since they help me keep abreast of developments there while living abroad. The threads of general interest, could still be on the general forums. We are a sufficiently populous country, with enough developments and forumers, to warrant our own thread.

Calm down....geez why do pakis always get so worked up and defensive. I don't think they meant any harm. Stop being so insecure. The person was merely stating that other countries, such as pakistan, vietnam, and (sri) lanka have their own sub-forums and it's a shame that bangladesh does not. It's the person's opinion. but Please keep off comments like that of 'dopekhor', in the first post of this page. Bangladesh should have its own forum, because they deserve it and not because others have it and certainly avoid such language as used above.

No decision has been taken about a separate Bangladesh subforum in this round of expansion.

The Asian mods are observing the activity and participation in the Bangladesh threads.

A separate subforum may be considered in the near future, based on the above criteria.

So boost up the activity and good work!

I was out of the forum for a month so didn't get the chance to voice my opinion. Bangladesh surely deserves a subforum. With a population of over 150 million(7th largest in the world) I am sure it will get many hits..

Right now there are so many threads regarding Bangladesh, sometimes I get lost. Having them organized under one section would be a great thing.

I vote for Bangladesh sub-forum.

If Sri Lanka can have one, Bangladesh should definitely have one too. Having a sub-forum will give visitors greater information about projects in Bangladesh. As you can see, there are lots of projects being undertaken in Bangladesh and there will be lots more in the coming future. So, Bangladesh deserves a sub-forum, I would say, immediately.

looks like this issue has not been resolved yet..is there still an active interest for a sub-forum ?

can I give a few suggestions..I think there are many threads about Bangladesh but mostly its photos and news. ( having said that thats how the India/Sri Lanka threads started aswell lol ) Perhaps you need more discussions and views ?? After all this is a forum and not a gallery. Another point, the creation of the Bangladesh forum must be based on its own merit and not on comparision to neighbours or who got a forum and who hasnt. That perhaps is not the right attitude and might not go down well in all quarters. I hope you take my criticism in good spirit. :)

all the best !

I think Bangladesh deserves a sub forum based on it's own merit. The comparison comes from the fact that there are no established standards or guidelines for having a sub forum. So, if it becomes evident that some countries have gotten a sub forum even after having lot less contents than others then the comparison becomes a reality, and I think rightfully so.

my personal view..

you might have a point, statistics is considered, but its not all about it. But I still don't think comparing helps if you look at it objectively. Comparison, confrontation etc perhaps is not the right attitude and that counts too. It just helps bring each other down.

Still it doesn't take away what you claim, that Bangladesh has the potential to have a sub-forum on its own merit. I made my suggestions more as a helpful hint as to what might be causing delays rather than an obstacle or a put down. Hope that helps in your cause and good luck :)

You may be right in that the mods don't see Bangladesh positively but can we really blame them? We haven't projected the best image abroad in the past. What has been projected is the poverty, corruption, natural disasters, political unrest, etc. Only now are we slowly emerging from all that and have a reason to hope for a better future, thanks largely to the current caretaker government. My hope is that we are able to continue to project a better image of ourselves so we have a better image abroad. If, even after that, people are biased against us then leave it, let it go. The truth is, it's not really stopping us.

Well, I don't think its about our image, we have a lot of threads but not enough forumers so I think the mods are just afraid that a Bangladesh subforum won't be that active. But, I think it will be very active if we have one. We need a subforum because

1. We are already doing a quite regular job, but still room for improvement.
2. A own subforum would mean more Bangladeshis joining in, most people I know do not care to join because they see BD has no place of its own.
3. Bangladeshi and international visitors will increase. The General Asian Discussion is seldomly visited but the other forums always have 3 or more visitors viewing them at any time of the day.
4.We can post in our own language since it will be a Bangladeshi forum, not a General one.
5. For the greater good of the General Asian Discussion forum, otherwise the invasion will continue

Plus i really don't think its the activity thing since cities like seattle and washington which hardly get any activity have their own subforum, while we don't. :-) my intention was not to start spamming zaki. what i meant was to take the the full liberty of this oppertunity to post/discuss even a simple matter in general asian discussion. we shouldnt just limit our posting within some certain catagories rather we could spread them as each individual topic, and discuss about it instead of copying and pasting from other news websites. this way general asian discussion section will be always full of bangladeshi news and topics.

Announcement

Secondly I would like to thank Suncity, Fusionist and Ashok for all their support. Without you guys there would be no Bangladeshi sub forum. Hi everyone

Yes, the Bangladeshi community here has certainly evolved and from the keen enthusiasm shown by the members, there are no better grounds for a Bangladeshi forum!

I'd like to get some feedback before the physical creation of the forum as the threads here will have to be moved over.

How many subsections are necessary and what should they be called?

tanzirian
April 20th, 2007, 05:11 AM
Hi RafflesCity, I think we should keep it fairly simple. Here are my suggestions:

1. Cityscapes & Urban Development. For threads like "Metro Dhaka", "Dhaka Projects", "Chittagong", "Sylhet", "Dhaka Hotels", "Dhaka Flyovers & Roads", "Dhaka Restaurants", and "Dhaka Apartments".
2. Heritage & General Development. For threads like "Bangladesh Tourism", "Bangladesh Culture", "Historic Dhaka", "Dhaka Landmarks", "Bangladesh Bridges & Highways", and "Bangladesh Airports & Aviation".
3. Skybar (Miscellaneous Discussion). For threads like "Bangladesh Caretaker Government", "Bangladesh Foreign Investments", and "Bangladesh Sports".

I think pretty much everyone here would like Tmac to be the moderator, though he has not said "yes" yet. Please communicate with him on these matters. I am of course happy to help in anyway I can, though I will be out of town Mon - Fri next week and may or may not have internet access during that time.

Great idea for sections tanzirian.

I personally would to see the following sections:
1. Dhaka City (Discussion of buildings, infrastructure, and other urban issues related to Dhaka)
2. Cityscapes (Pictures of cities, buildings, already constructed other than Dhaka)
3. Construction and Development News (all cities)
4. Adda (Skybar)

And also have a open forum to post general Banglaesh related topics kind of like how Asia has it at the bottom. If you need any help, just contac me, i will be free on the weekend.

^^ I was also thinking that "Adda" would be a good name for our Skybar section. (for benefit of any non-Bangla speakers, "Adda" basically means "informal group chat" :) ).

First of all we need two mods- Tmac and Mirza I suggest because they deserve their reward for being one of the first few Bangladeshis up here.

Secondly- lets set a rules and guideline for the forum.

Third- We need to make a thread asking Bangladeshi guests to join

Fourth- We need a heritage section along with what Zaki has mentioned, and oh yeah, would love the name "adda" for Skybar, and the forum should be named "Shonar Bangladesh" :)

Tmac
April 20th, 2007, 06:40 AM
I like the way Tanzirian divided the sections. We should definitely call skybar "adda" and also name the sub forum "Sonar Bangladesh". I would change "Dhaka - Hotels and Resorts" to "Bangladesh - Hotels and Resorts" and move it to Heritage and General development next to Tourism, etc.

Rafflescity, please give me a little time and I will present to you our suggestions. Meanwhile all the Bangladeshi forumers can post their opinions/suggestions here.

Awesome news :). Also great post Tmac regarding the subforum. My only input will be for point 2 "Heritage and general development" maybe we can put it as "Tourism and Heritage".. the reason being, as a foreigner the word "tourism" is catchy, someone would go to that thread first to get an idea of all the places to visit.

I mean when I visit through other country's section, I looke for words like "Tourism", "scenic beauties" etc to quickly know about that nation..

"Shonar Bangladesh" or "Golden Bangladesh" is a catchy name, we should make the word "Golden" synonymous to Bangladesh just like India has used the campaign "Shining India" quite successfuly in the west..

Infact, I think the Pakistan forum is named "Pak Mehfil" which is not English either.

I haven't read the article, but perhaps it was talking about Bengalis and not Bangladeshis. After all, there are about a 100 million Bengalis in West Bengal. But of course it could be a typo. I am not sure how many Bangladeshis there are here in the US but the total is not that great. Some years ago I read that in New York City there were about 150,000. However, outside New York the numbers are much smaller.

There are millions in the middle east and hundreds of thousands in europe, North America, and South east Asia each. And the rest of the 10 million comes from Bangladeshi's living in India.

^^ That's right, we've done quite well compared to the other populous South Asian countries, which is especially good since we have been truly independent only half as long.
