i agree. it finally looks like Addis is getting a real skyline.
Ahadu May 2nd, 2010, 12:02 AM That edited landscaping is pretty good Ahadu! I wish people would be more proactive in doing this. I mean, those shops can just hire even a couple of street boys for 3-4 hours and get them to do it. Really cheap to do!
abesha,
I am just venting my anger using the good old photoshop!:)
Very easy & cheap indeed! Our problem is lack of creative minds. Those financially okay people can do so many things to improve by spending with little extra money. Unfortunately, it looks like that they are waiting for Zenawi to do everything. I am not sure whether there it is greed or ignorance that blinded us all.
Wait and see when I moved there!:)

Ahadu May 2nd, 2010, 10:42 PM Ethiopia acts to curb animals in city streets
By Dorcas Ilunga Chileshe
Times of Zambia 16:06 Fri, 30 Apr 2010
ONE of the most striking things about Addis -Ababa, the headquarters of the African Union (AU) is the frequent movement of animals on roads.
In Addis Ababa city, in Ethiopia, it is normal to see animals such as donkeys, goats, sheep and cattle jostling with people on crowded sidewalks.
Driving in this city can be a big challenge as one has to look out for animals that may decide to cross the road suddenly.
The scenario of animals on city roads looks strange to foreigners visiting Ethiopia for the first time and those coming to attend high level meetings at the AU and other international organisations. The scenario also strikes Ethiopians who visit their country after living in other countries for many years.
This trend however, will soon be a thing of the past as the Ethiopian government has now passed a law to curb the movement of animals on city roads.
The new traffic law dictates that animals cannot use the streets and sidewalks but have to be transported to any destination on trucks like in many African countries.
This passing of the law has cheered not only foreigners but also Ethiopians who feel that the movement of animals on city roads is a threat to the health of human beings.
The Ethiopian television and radio has been running some sensitisation programmes to educate the people about the new law.
Chief Traffic Police Public Relations Officer Assesa Mezgeeu recently stated that the people of Ethiopia need massive sensitisation because the law is asking them to do away with a trend they have been practicing for many years.
Mr Mezgeeu said the law which attracts a penalty of 60 Ethiopian Birr (about $5 USD) is in force and that a lot of people who own animals such as goats, cattle or sheep are beginning to change their attitude.
He admitted that the penalty is negligible but added that the idea is not to punish people who own animals but rather to help them develop a better way of looking after their animals so that they do not pose a health risk to human beings.
Prominent business executive in Addis Ababa Ephraim Eshetu commended the Ethiopian government for enacting such a law.
“Being the headquarters of the African Union, one would expect Addis Ababa to be the cleanest city in Africa. The new law to curb the movement of animals on the roads requires urgent implementation,’’ Mr Eshetu said.
But Addis Ababa cattle owner Abraha Hailu says the law will adversely affect the business of many Ethiopians who depend on the sale of animals such as cattle, goats and sheep.
Mr Hailu said Addis Ababa has designated points where animals are sold and that people who own animals have to move them to such places everyday.
He said cattle, sheep and goat owners sell an average of four animals a day and that that hiring a truck in the morning and evening everyday will not be practical.
“Hiring trucks on a daily basis to transport animals to selling points is not practical because it is very costly, most of us will not afford’’, said Mr Hailu.
And a sheep owner Meseret Behailu said that while government’s intention to curb the movement of animals on the roads is good, it should also put in measures to cushion its poor people who depend on the sale of animals for their livelihood.
Ms Behailu said the Ethiopian government should not just copy what is pertaining in other African countries without scrutinising the situation on the ground.
She said other African countries have no animals moving on the roads because people do not depend on animals for their livelihood.
She added that Ethiopia is one of the African countries with a high population of animals and that people depend on these animals to meet their daily needs.
Debate on the law to curb the movement of animals on city roads in Ethiopia will continue but government maintains it is time to keep city roads clean and free from cow dung.

BUTEMBO21 May 3rd, 2010, 07:26 AM Forget about kissing, how about eating? If you urinate, that's fine, you eat, you are a balege.
that is nothing compared to what i saw in some toilets in restaurants and bars, they would rather urinate on the floor than target the toilet provided....too lazy to target...
Exactly, one can piss in public but can't fart in public.
You can't hold the hand of the opposite sex in public, but you can walk with the same sex arm in arm.
You guys are a bunch of comedians.
Urinating in public is better than Eating on the street? what?
Kissing i think thats most of the continent.
You mean i cant walk with my girlfriend or wife in hands? thats a joke.

Why the pedestrians are avoiding the footpath - is that just a bad-habit hard to die.
Now it is time to introduce a penalty for those J-Walkers - don't be shy to use the footpath - It won't Bite !:)
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kBEYkC_xsdw/S81du2-_fdI/AAAAAAAAAYs/XgRQMuLClT8/s912/102_0175.JPG
 That was exactly the first thing I thought of when I saw both of these pictures. I was going to say the same thing until I saw this. I guess here in the West, we've been accustomed to or conditioned to internalize these seemingly simple concepts so much that we forget how oblivious some people can be to it.
Is it so hard though??? I mean come on. There is a sidewalk and the crazy lady is walking in the center island. WTF!! The other Tigrayan looking woman, I have no idea what her deal is..it's a couple strides away lady. She has no excuse. Get off the friggin road! Jebus.
Hersh May 6th, 2010, 02:53 PM I'm just trying to visualise some finishing touch.
Hmmmm..... Very lash green grass a way to go.....I guess!
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/7910/45437228.jpg
Amazing demonstration.
I think one major problem down there is that there is probably no institution that handles turfgrass growing and distribution. What they do out here in the west is that upon completion, they simply deliver the necessary swath of turf to cover the newly designated area.
Additionally, since it's usually private property on which the grass is planted, they have an irrigation system that waters the lawn regularly. Such mechanism is probably nonexistent there.
Hersh May 6th, 2010, 03:00 PM The new traffic laws in Addis say jaywalking carries a fine. But I think there should be a mass sensitisation program on TV and radio to drill it into people's thick skulls.
WTH is so hard about getting your ass on a sidewalk?????????
I'm just as baffled, but I'm trying to understand their complete ignorance for something so conceptually obvious.
This seems to be a matter of reshaping culture and that, I think, will probably take some time, unfortunately.
This of course includes other bad and shameful habits like public defecation, urination and littering.
Hersh May 6th, 2010, 03:05 PM If you have noticed, almost all Addis car drivers do not know the purpose of having white paint on roads. They think lane-divider paints are there to decorate the road.
LOL This is probably one of my biggest pet peeves. It irks me to near madness whenever I see pictures from back home and see what seems like a near universal state of lane changing....or so it seemed. Little did I know at first that they're not in the middle of changing lanes...they're driving that way!:bash:
Here is another thing ..... bad culture or what?.....:)
If you kiss your girlfriend on the street of Addis, you are a dead meat. But, if you urinate on the street, you are a hero. That to me is a mystery!:)
I wonder if they have implemented a rule of law to solve such a mystery??
I plan on visiting in January. Please tell me you're being facetious. lol

yeah, that makes me sick as well. I believe the naming has a lot to do with the Britain's army involvement during the Italian invasion. I'm sure back then considering how naive we were when it comes to our relationships with the ferenjis (we still are) it wasn't surprising that we ended up having to name one of our main street after a pathetic individual ( an ugly frog looking weirdo at that). I think at some point we definitely need to change it to something that relates to our culture/people. but I'm afraid, considering the average Ethiopian's love for everything white some would resist the change and try to keep it as it is.

Winston Churchill Hotel Inaugurated
April 24th, 2010
Posted by: Ezra Alemayehu (ezra@dailyethiopia.com)
A four-star hotel constructed in the metropolis at a cost of 100 million birr was inaugurated here Friday with the presence of senior government officials. The hotel is named after Winston Churchill the former PM of Great Britain.
On the occasion, Owner of the hotel Endale Genemo said the twelve storey hotel has 53 spacious rooms of different levels, conference room, gymnasium, four standard bars and other facilities.
Endale said the hotel created jobs for one hundred employees and will soon add more.
He said the ever increasing international conferences and increment of tourists flow to Addis and most importantly government’s policy are major driving forces for him to engage in the sector.
He said he has envisaged opening more hotels in different parts of the country.
On the occasion, Culture and Tourism Minister Ambassador Mohammed Dirir said Ethiopia is increasingly becoming a tourist destination.
Hence, he said the construction of standardize hotels will contribute for the development of the tourism sector and generate foreign earnings.
He said the ministry will extend all the necessary support for people engaged in the sector.
President Girma Woldegiorgis on his part said the opening of the hotel showed how the private sector is playing key role in the country’s growing economy. -- ENA

I respectfully disagree. it seems that thanks to miseducation and propaganda this is the common misconception held by the average Ethiopian in regards to this topic.
if you actually put it in a much larger context Churchill didn't send troops out of goodwill or to "liberate" Ethiopia, but to defeat Italy (which was part of the axis of evil) from every country it invaded in order to end WWII. yeah, white soldiers killing other white soldiers to liberate blacks. that sounds reasonable. the U.S and its allies (Including Britain) fought their enemies in every corner of the world, including Ethiopia. of course they had to come to Ethiopia to be able to defeat Italy. but also, they went to North Africa, the Pacific, Europe, Asia and wherever the Italian, Germany and Japan's army was present.
after all Haile Selassie's practically had to beg for Europeans involvement to stop the genocide of Ethiopians and they refused until war became inevitable.

lol the British came to Ethiopia by request of a crying so called "emperor"; the same emperor that deserted his people and allowed them to be colonized for 5 years. After Ethiopia was liberated by British soldiers, it became a British protectorate for one year before officially becoming a state and entering the U.N.

ITA, I was about to say that as well.
eliasbeef May 9th, 2010, 11:58 AM lol the British came to Ethiopia by request of a crying so called "emperor"; the same emperor that deserted his people and allowed them to be colonized for 5 years. After Ethiopia was liberated by British soldiers, it became a British protectorate for one year before officially becoming a state and entering the U.N.
'freedom fighter' Trust me, you never fought and won a war and you never will. you are no more than a cold war spillover. don't let it get to your bone head, or else you risk losing what ever you think you have got. you are better off doing some thing to your rotting colonial village Asmara instead of sticking your dirty Shabian nose in our business. cheeers:cheers:
mike7743 May 9th, 2010, 01:20 PM I just find it ironic and beyond pathetic for someone who takes pride in "defeating" his former "colonial masters" (Ethiopians) but yet to stay obsessed with that very nation. isn't that the whole point?
like to stay as far away as possible?
this loser needs to get a life and I'm with Ahadu on this. ban his stupid ass. some people don't know how to have a normal discussion. any other Eritrean brothers who would like to get involved in our forum are more than welcome here but complete moron with different intention need to be handled accordigly.
and also can we not respond to this clown, ever again please?
this is a development thread where we Ethiopians (and our friends) enjoy the accomplishments we have made so far, and dream for a better future for our beautiful and historically amazing nation. if anyone can't handle that all they have to do is to hit the back button and stay away.

Why is ETV always so amedam on the internet?
Anyway, that clip was just amazing. I can't believe how fast the city is changing.
With that said, did you hear the narrative? Apparently Addis has 2.73 million inhabitants LOL. AS IF!
It's crazy that the more time passes, the lower the estimates of the city's population are getting. Completely ridiculous.
Addis has at the very least 4.5 million people. That city is crowded to the max.
yosef May 9th, 2010, 05:42 PM Those photoshops look so awesome Ahadu, its amazing how quickly those areas are transformed with a little bit of work. The thing about it is that those small touches wouldnt even take too much time or money. I think small businesses that do landscaping and asphalting could benefit if they are given these contracts (which by the way would cost less than most any utility or road project that the City Administration is presently working on).
Focusing on the inner CBD or areas that very important to the cities functioning would obviously be the first part. Other parts of the city can probably be done at later times to give planners some time to complete their vision of the city's growth.
This goes for car parking as well, car garages like we have in the west are relatively inexpensive compared to the benefit they provide by helping improve the flow of traffic, free up space for pedestrians, organize space efficiently, provide revenue for building owners/city administration etc.
Maybe you should go ahead and start that photoshop thread...and maybe you can title it "Addis Ababa photoshop Fantasy" :D

not just on the internet, trust me even on the actual TV screen It is just as bad as on the net. CCTV video on London bus is much clearer than ETV. bear in mind most of the camera crews at ETV are used to operating Kalashnikov not a decent camera.

Yosef,
I will have a thread once the forum is re-organized. We may have a photoshop comptetion (on selected shanti street) expressing our virtual wish for the city.
Such a small modification can do so much change - so much so, even the two girls start to look attractive :naughty:(BTW: they look like twins with the same dress:)).
The thing about it is that those small touches wouldn’t even take too much time or money.
^^
Not at all:
Cobblestone / or asphalt (how much?),..... then give me 5 sacks of cement and sand, 2 buckets of paints (yellow and white), probably 1500 tiles, water and a role of grass - I will build the side-walk for free!:) Then, I would hire the two ladies to look after the mini-garden......(2Birr per day of course)
Ahadu May 9th, 2010, 11:07 PM Addis has at the very least 4.5 million people. That city is crowded to the max.
Abesha
The actual population of Addis is 2.7 million. It looks crowded because there is lack of open spaces. Besides - think about it, if you want to walk from Arat Killo to Piazza, for example, how many alternative street do you have - very limited. Addis is not a grid system i.e. a block-by-block city. That's why it looks crowded but not due to it's population. It is a city where you and your relatives, friends, enemies, etc. walk on and use the same road day-in-day out. You do not have a choice except rubbing your shoulders with the other thousands on a single road....:)
abesha May 9th, 2010, 11:20 PM Sorry Ahadu, but I disagree with you.
I currently live in Lusaka, where the population is about 1.5 million. Let me tell you, compared to Addis, it feels like I'm in Awassa or Dire Dawa, however I'm expected to believe that Addis has less than twice this population??
Here there are barely any people anywhere, there is almost no active street life, very little built up space, etc. It's so deserted, it feels like a suburb.
Incomparable.

abesha May 10th, 2010, 10:42 AM The amount of cars in Addis is very low compared to other countries because of low income levels and high import taxes. It's not an accurate measure of the amount of people there. Rather look at how densely populated the slums are, followed by how many slums there are in the city. That tells you there are lot and lots of people.
I still disagree

We wait until the city is choked and start pointing fingers. A study was done on the impact of congestion and it was found that about Dar is losing $3.5 million due to congestion
which is the tallest building in Addis Ababa now? and is the construction started for CBE?
yosef May 14th, 2010, 01:09 PM ^^Hey tanzan, thats an interesting point about Dar, what is the population there currently?
The tallest building in Addis presently is the Nani Building (http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/1584/p2231710.jpg) (22 storey) and then probably Awash Banks building (http://i47.tinypic.com/2wlvjbk.jpg). And now that the govt has funding for its 200 buildings of 25-30 storey size for housing, I think that may drive investors to go even higher.
Add to that, the Chinese cement factory just coming online, and other investors cement factories to soon start operation...I think we may be on the eve of alot of new construction in Addis.

not having sidewalks is not that much of an issue, most of the streets in japan have no sidewalks - take a look at this picture

as long as you mark out where pedestrians should be its enough, for smaller roads such as this one.
infact many asian cities only have sidewalks on the main boulevards
abesha May 15th, 2010, 04:59 PM There is a sidewalk (that needs to be fixed) on the right side of the pic.
The left side has enough space for one in the future as well, (the buildings are far from the road so it seems it's been planned that way).

Well that is very bad my friend. I was walking around in the Shinagawa/Shinjuku side streets in Tokyo and they have no damn side walks, it was annoying to all the westerners with me, I was the only one who did mind it because you know, I am from Ethiopia. Japan is a small Island so the narrow type roads in big cities is ok, Ethiopia and most African countries have no such problem and so need side walks as you find in US cities.

japopian,
That pic is showing you a narrow alleyway - by rule of thumbs, most modern cities with grid system have them. i.e. that, by definition, is a simple an off pedestrian lane.
We are talking about side-walks not alleyways.

I disagree. having sidewalks in a crowded city like Addis (or in any city for that matter) is crucial. most people rely on public transportation or walk to their destination. you'll need to prevent them from using/walking on roads that are designed and built for cars so that both drivers and pedestrians can have a pleasant urban experience.
yosef May 16th, 2010, 03:21 PM Definitely need sidewalks, what bugs me even more are those unsightly fences for construction.

That is an interesting point. Those constructions companies (be it Berta, Sunshine, Midrock.....etc.) do not realise that fence panel on every construction site is a potential billboard - someone please whisper into their ears!! Hopefully though, private temporary fencing companies will soon emerge and things may change for good. Besides, the city Admin should come up with some sort of regulations and regulate those fences – for the sake of safety at least.

The "GE'EZ" language in Ethiopia actually almost always used the name "MISR" instead of Egypt.
In Amharic we use the name "Gbts" ("G" read as in "Glow") not "Egypt" In fact a lot of people in Ethiopia don't know the name "Egypt"
Anyway now that I see "Gbts" and "Egypt" next to each other, the names are actually close.

You make a good point, quality construction site management will help those companies earn more future business. What is needed more than anything tho is a comprehensive set of guidelines and regulations like you say for construction areas especially in these city areas where there is alot of pedestrian foot traffic, and then of course enforcement of them.

Ahadu June 5th, 2010, 12:02 AM The ugliest thing ever built in the city of Addis!
Speaking art and architecturally wise it is a pure junk. Insignificant in terms of history. I do not understand why a priority is given to a four wheels wooden canon while ignoring the actual history maker - the brutal Tewodros? Wouldn't be better to have the image of the King himself (like Minelik or Abuna Petros) rather than some a makeshift canon?
The best monument would be - The King himself, victims of the King like the Oromos and other minorities reflecting and reminding us his brutality, and of course the 20+ innocent European prisoners and their children (some say close to 23 children were jailed together with their parents - one an interesting thing is that Tewodros also jailed two of the half-cast kids belong to John Bell who used to be an advisor and best friend of Tewodros - I wonder why???? Remember, John Bell had an Abesha wife with two kids. After John Bell was killed by a shifta, King Tewodros took his revenge and massacred 2000 innocent civilians. That was well documented in the letter he wrote [bragging of course] to the Queen of England). Later, Bell's children (half white and half black) were rescued by the British army and taken back to England – I wonder if their descendents still exist somewhere in England. That would be a fantastic research topic to Addis Ababa University students to investigate such part of history – unfortunately, today’s students keep regurgitate what ever written for them. For example, how many of you guys know that King Tewodros had five illegitimate children. How come we don’t know about them? I picked up quiet a number of historical books written by Abesha researchers and checked – Nothing. They still chewing what Megistu Hailemariam used to tell them. What a Shame!
The reason that we need a monument is to reflect and remind the generation such a hidden history. So, for me, this four wheels thingy is just an ugly junk, insignificant and irrelevant at best! It doesn’t reflect a true history!

When you think about it, this hideous thing is really funny . What is that pile of cement / rubble junk under the cannon? As far as I know, the canon (i.e. Sebastopol - BTW, an European name:nuts:) was a hand crafted killing machine build by a forced labour. The one in the pic, funny enough, looks designed with the help of a Computer Aided Design software - look at how it is well crafted and casted out.
Who build this grossly offensive to decency and morality anyways?? Where is creativity and honesty for God sake?:ohno:

Ouzo is a national alcohol of Greek. In fact, the origin of the Amharic word Araki is from Greek or Turkish word rakia. Why an Abasha made Katikal is named after a Greek alcohol - any history behind it??????
P.S. Personally, hate alcohol! I wonder why people are investing in such unhealthy area. Even so its up to them to invest their money in any way they want to & help out the unemployed, but it is ironic to notice such an investment gets priority than a basic agriculture.
abesha June 5th, 2010, 12:02 PM Why are you automatically assuming it's Greek or Turkish and Abeshas adopted it? It could be the other way around you know.
We really need to automatically stop assuming that everything in Africa (not just Ethiopia) is a result of foreign influence. It could be, could also not be. Don't assume without any evidence. We are not doing ourselves any favors by doing that.
Keep in mind that women distill alcohol (i.e. areke) in the middle of the countryside, in areas where they've never even heard of Greece or Turkey.

Abesh,
What's your point? Be clear - would you? There is no assumption here. Go and read some facts. Ozou is a national alcohol of Greek for centuries. I'm trying to find why a modern day Ethiopia is adopting the name? Why such question is pushing you to the edge? /or were you intoxicated with Ozou while you were writting? :)
We really need to automatically stop assuming that everything in Africa (not just Ethiopia) is a result of foreign influence.
Who is assuming here - did I? Abesha, what a load of %$#@ you are talking about for God sake? BTW: There is nothing wrong to be positively influenced by foreign culture /or technology - it just part of the dynamics of history. People in Ethiopia, for example, still believe an Indian made silk-umbrella is holly/divine & must exclusively be left for church ceremonies - such myth need to be seen from different perspective (eg. influence of Indians on Ethiopian church) - you can't simply cover up what’s already visible just for sake of denying foreign influence.
Keep in mind that women distill alcohol (i.e. areke) in the middle of the countryside, in areas where they've never even heard of Greece or Turkey.

Would you rather live in the Bronx were everyday day a cop pulls to your door asking questions and what's the point of sidewalks. There just a waste of money. They don't keep people safe. Just paint a white damn line and the side of the road and call it a walkway.
Fences are fences. WTF cares what they look like they're not your fences so don't worry about it.

Ramy H June 6th, 2010, 07:25 AM Beautiful pics! I've always wanted to visit this place... looks so interesting
Also about the ouzo... its history lies with the Mediterranean. Lebanon, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece (and Macedonia) have been producing it for centuries. And Iraq, Iran and Egypt followed suite decades later. Of course each country has its own term for naming it.. Greece is ouzo, egypt is zibib.. lebanon is arak. :)
So the question still is out there, why didn't they change the name to something more.. ethiopian?

what in the world are you talking about? I had to read your post more than twice just wrap my head around it. jeez. for your information, I lived in New York at some point and I'm trying to see the relationship b/n NYPD and sidewalks in Addis. you watch way too many American TV cop shows. either you have no idea what you're sayin or you were typing this half sleep. I hope it's the latter. so let me try to help, if you're trying to imply that crime infested neighborhoods need to have fences in order to protect residents of that area, well you don't know jack about Addis, which in turn makes your point rather dull. because if you do, you would realize that Addis is a city with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. besides how can you have fences in the middle of downtown?
"paint a white line and call it a sidewalk"?.... uhm, what?!? I'm trying not to be rude, but are you somewhat retarded?
seriously, take some time, gather your thoughts and make another post stating your objection to sidewalks. I'd love to heat a different opinion regarding this issue, as long as you're able to make a reasonable and well thought out argument.

Oromo nationals visit Oromo Cultural Center under construction at a cost of over 168.7 million Birr
Addis Ababa, March 13, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Oromo nationals living in Yeka Sub-city of the Addis Ababa City Administration visited on Saturday the Oromo Cultural Center which is under construction here in Kirkos Sub-city of the metropolis.
The new cultural center, which comprises nine building blocks will have a museum, theater room, library, language academy, assembly hall, restaurant, and parking lot with a capacity of serving up to 400 vehicles at a time, is under construction on 41,000 sq. meter area of land.
The main objective of the visitation is to acquaint the Oromo nations with the on-going development activities of the Oromia regional government, EPRDF’s Public Relations Advisor with the Sub-city, Dereje Abera told ENA.
Dereje urged Oromo nationals on the occasion to be organized in associations and play their level best toward ensuring speedy and sustainable development in the region as well as in preserving the language and culture of the Oromo nation.
The Oromo nationals vowed to rally behind the incumbent Ethiopian government in efforts toward making the country become one of the middle income earning nations of the world in the shortest time possible.
About 40 percent of the construction of new cultural center, which is launched in Nov. 2008 at a cost of over 168.7 million Birr, has already been finalized.

Birth certificate? Are you serious?!!? :ohno: It's sad though, the practice of charging ferenji exorbitantly higher prices than Ethiopians. I remember going to Ethiopia in 06'- my mother (I was travelling with her and my grandfather, who lives in Addis) told me to stay quiet when they were booking the room, so they could get the lower price. It's sad, really is, we need a strong anti-corruption culture in Ethiopia.
The Ethiopia Hotel has wonderful architecture however, as do all the Ghion hotels (though I wish the corridors to the rooms were enclosed- we got very wet walking to our room in Gondar). Food was good and cheap (about 100- when it was 8 to the dollar- birr for a large breakfast for the three of us at the Tana), the rooms weren't nearly dated as the reviews on TripAdvisor make them sound, they had a good Ethiopian chic to them, but the bathrooms were sub-par and the televisions were what- 12 inches big?
http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/01/5f/43/90/hotel-exterior.jpg
See what I mean by them being enclosed? Makes the difference between a glorified motel and good hotel. All and all a through 2.5 star setup at all of the Ghion hotels, some 3 and 4 star elements, other 1 and 2 and 0 star. With better management and a couple of improvements, I could see the Ghion hotels be a thorough 3 1/2 star set up by western standards.
Kenguy June 14th, 2010, 07:48 PM Ethiopia Hotel is one shitty Hotel. Stuff have bad attitude, facilities are all worn out, smells like muck. Everyone of these government Hotels are in bad shape, Harambee, Ethiopia, Wabe Shebelle, Ras, Fil wuha. All in extremely terrible shape. In Harambee Hotel the front desk reservation clerk wanted a bribe to let us stay for the normal price. He asked me proof of nationality, when we told him my Bother is a citizen he asked him for birth certificate, although he had his Metawekiya... haha.
You guys have a hotel called harambee? Interesting.
Hersh June 14th, 2010, 10:43 PM You guys have a hotel called harambee? Interesting.
Yeah, I always wondered how the word became so familiar/common in Ethiopia. If I understand correctly, it means "working in unity" in swahili, right?
yosef June 14th, 2010, 10:51 PM In that last pic, the fenced-in area in blue tin next to Ethiopia hotel (left bottom corner of pic) is where the CBE hq is going to go up.
oh is that where they are putting it up? nice location near awash and midroc hq to add to nascent bussiness/financial district.
I could imagine there being some good filling in for that area in the future.
Nice video yoniii. It looks like some of it was maybe filmed from nani building top level.

yeah some of it is definitely from a moving helicopter, others look like still shots from a high location..especially the shots that focus on meskel square
I heard they are supposed to build a tall observation structure (sort of like the space needle in Seattle or CN tower in Toronto) over Gotera.
that will be a pretty good observation area for Addis in the future.

Ooh, do you know of any more projects "they are supposed to build"- the ones you can't find on Google?
yosef June 15th, 2010, 02:01 AM Ooh, do you know of any more projects "they are supposed to build"- the ones you can't find on Google?
They are scattered all through out in random place (the internet, addis ababa publications, etc.) it only takes a little digging to find them.
For example: The observation tower was mentioned during the Gotera junction inauguration, it is on ethiotube during the event.
If I find anymore I'll make sure to post em.
Simfan34 June 15th, 2010, 05:33 AM Ahhhh... here (http://www.addisfortune.com/Vol%2010%20No%20475%20Archive/To%20Compliment%20its%20New%20Look%20Confusion%20Square%20Gets%20a%20Tower.htm)is an article.
To Compliment its New Look Confusion Square Gets a Tower
A tower approximately 57 metres high is going to be erected at the Gotera Interchange, by the Addis Abeba City Roads Authority (AACRA). The tower will give people a birds’ eye view of the interchange and will be used as a downtown recreational centere.
The Gotera Interchange, officially called the Nations, Nationalities Square was officially inaugurated on May 31, 2009.
The estimated cost of the tower is 15 million Br. It is expected to have a recreational centre which the public can use and a tower which will give people the ability to see the design of the interchange which took 22 months to construct.
“The construction of the tower might start by the end of this year,” Fekade Haile (Eng.), general manager of AACRA, told Fortune.
However, officials at the Authority have not yet made up their mind between two possible designs for the tower. One design is being presented from the Shanghai Construction Group of China, a Chinese construction firm that did the construction of the interchange. Another design is being created by the authority’s architects.
The tower will have elevator service, the General Manager said, to be used to go to the top and look down on the design of the interchange with overpasses on an area that formerly consisted of the shambolic road that won it the name “Confusion Square”.
The interchange’s structure was constructed with a cost of 170 million Br covered by the Chinese government except for 35 million Br which the City Government spent on the compensation and resettling the people who used to live around the area. The cost for the design and research for the interchange accounts to 11.5 million Br.
The 8.1kms long road with two over passes was inaugurated last Sunday in the presence of Kuma Demeksa, mayor of the city, and Degefe Bula, speaker of the House of Federation, after it has already been opened for traffic on May 1, 2009.
The Gotera tower will become Addis Abeba’s first and will stand in the middle of one its busiest roads.
The tallest tower in the world is the 553 metres tall CN tower in Toronto, Canada. It is made of concrete and was built in 1976; followed by Ostankino and Oriental Pearl, which are 540 metres and 467 metres tall in that order . These towers, found in Moscow, Russia and Shanghai, China are both made from concrete and were built in 1967 and 1995.
Only 57 M? A 275m tower would be good here (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=9.037058%2C38.810055&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl). Or Downtown. But 57 m is a joke.
teklu June 15th, 2010, 12:51 PM I think it's the Oromo cultural center constructed by Alamoudi.
I think almoudi failed to honor his word and the state government decide to built it using tax payers money with 10 high standard high schools scatterd all over addis which are supposed to offer class in afan oromo.
I read it in reporter news some time ago!

Roha June 17th, 2010, 11:23 PM Abesh,
What's your point? Be clear - would you? There is no assumption here. Go and read some facts. Ozou is a national alcohol of Greek for centuries. I'm trying to find why a modern day Ethiopia is adopting the name? Why such question is pushing you to the edge? /or were you intoxicated with Ozou while you were writting? :)
Funny when you are trying to give out a millennium old intellectual property illegally. Distillation invented in Ethiopia.......give me a break will you? A second millennium Babylonian invention goes directly to Abesha - out of the blue!....Our dear friend Abesha, I think, is one of those Ethiopians who still believe James Bruce is the father of Blue Nile – what else can I say?:)
Taking out Turkey's and Greek's influence from the daily life of Ethiopians Ha......well, sorry to tell you that you do not have a clue what you are talking about – Please do stop reading that yellow book titled “From King Tewodros to King Haile Selasie”. You have the wrong book babe:naughty:
Ahadu I agree with you I think Ozou was brought by the Greeks in Ethiopia
Kenguy June 19th, 2010, 09:21 AM Yeah, I always wondered how the word became so familiar/common in Ethiopia. If I understand correctly, it means "working in unity" in swahili, right?
Right on! It was our national motto in Kenya and was used to drive development in the early years after independence. A huge chunk of schools, hospitals e.t.c. were built through 'harambee' initiatives.
Im guessing for Ethiopia, it had some communist meaning. Then again Haile Selassie and Jomo Kenyatta were close pals and might have popularised the word during their time in power in their respective countries.

No man, we took it from Kenya. Haile Selassie and Kenyatta were very close. The slogan Harambee was used in Ethiopia during the King's reign. Roads and Hotels were named that way. There is a major road called Haile Selassie avenue in Nairobi.

Afriq June 29th, 2010, 03:52 PM Well there is no doubt that modern Ethiopian culture was influenced by other cultures especially by those of the west. Like many non western countries we are influenced by the west but I would argue that the degree of influence is low compared with other countries. If you look at Ethiopian music from the 60’s, its clear to see the influence of Funk, R&B and soul music in Ethiopian music but those who were influenced were creative enough to take the influence and fuse it with our own culture there by making it distinct. Being influenced is not a bad thing, we should be influenced by positive developments.
Abesha, I agree with you. Some idiots are quick to judge without any evidence, I have even heard some Europeans talking about external influence on a few of our architectures, with out giving any reasonable explanation.
They always underestimate the ability of Black Africans. Recent studies indicate that Ethiopian architecture is very unique and different from those whom they assumed might have influenced our building style. So don’t mind these kind of yefrnj amlakiwoch. :wallbash:

agreed. unfortunately, for the most part, there aren't a group of "black" people who love whites as much as Ethiopians do. a white person can do no wrong in an Ethiopian's eyes. such a mindset can attributed to Ethiopia's unique history and relationship with outsiders, so it can be excused in that respect. but in today's day and age one would think this naive view of outsiders held by many almost to a degree of worshiping would be challenged by independent thoughts. so far that hasn't been the case. it's unfortunate, sad and almost pathetic.

We Ethiopians don't worship no race except respect them by their deeds.

I wouldn't call it generalization but more of an observation. I understand the need to get defensive but this is a reality within our culture. it's frustrating to me, to say the least. again, it goes back to our weird relationship with outsiders. the whites to many Ethiopians are the people who bring food aid, clothes and adopt kids, not the people who enslave and exploit others. that distinction/awareness was never there, hence the result of subconsciously accepting of white's superiority. you can't sit there and tell me that is not the case. an Ethiopian woman is encouraged to marry a white person but would be outcasted for doing the same with an African. even though both men can have the same status and financial means. the average Ethiopian feels a bit superior to an African (please tell me if I'm lying), even though Ethiopia is also responsible for destroying the image of Africa. I can go on and on and on... again, not acknowledging these facts doesn't help any of us. being self critical is really important in building a much more sophisticated and balanced society.
abesha June 30th, 2010, 10:46 AM Being self-critical is good, but we shouldn't also go overboard.
I don't recognise that white worship you seem to see. We definitely have a colorism problem though within our own society.
However, in my experience, Habeshas are actually quite derisive of any non-Habesha, including whites. I've heard all sorts of comments towards White that would definitely be classified as racist.
Maybe the reality in your family or community is different, but I grew up in Addis and I haven't seen what you claim.
OTOH, we definitely have a problem with how we see other Africans, and that's quite universal in the country from my experience. The only Africans we "accept" are Somalis, Djiboutians, Sudanese, etc. That has to change for sure.
Anyway, let's not threadjack this thread any further yet again. This discussion belongs in the social issues forum.

Last comment ,
i have to disagree mike7743.
i talk for my self and most of my country men whom i know.
i think we are more relaxed and open toward whites than other african brothers are , this is because we dont carry colonial bagages.
we see our selves more equal even sometimes superior to whites.i see and feel that even now where i live and work.
since 6th grade have been with many diffrent nationalities mostly whites never saw them as superior , my school friends didnt have any problem either
concerning marriage i have to disagree again , my sister is married to an african , her husbund got accepted by the family whereas i got married to a white person had a problem, my wife still isnt fully accepted.
cheers

sorry to hear about your personal issues but you're case is the exception. as for Ethiopian's view of Africans, I don't have to look further, there were comments that were made against Africans in this very thread by this page's contributors using Amharic a few pages back. I won't be rude enough to re-quote just to prove a point but these issues do exist and are ridiculous when out in the larger context.

Simfan34 July 3rd, 2010, 02:56 AM The writer sounds like some opposition type, and you sound like a Woyane hack, Ahadu. You know, the original Woyane from the 1940's were traitors, rebelling while we were still fighting holdover Italian partisans.
abesha July 3rd, 2010, 08:52 AM A lot of foreigners who go to Ethiopia take a couple of pics and then write a lot of BS. The problem is that Ethiopians who go back neither take pics, nor write blogs or whatever on their trip.
This is one part of grassroots branding, and we suck at it.
I've seen a pic of Nani bldg where the foreigner explains that there is a lot of construction in Addis, owned by the Chinese, just like the one in the pic. I was like WTF. They just invent it on the spot. :ohno:

The development has already began. The reason it took so long to start was the issue of moving telephony and water lines which runs in that land and the authorities had a problem addressing this issue for very long time.

Mintali July 7th, 2010, 12:27 PM Think Addis Ababa is a great city. Though it has many poor regions, they remain clean compared to most other cities
Mintali July 7th, 2010, 12:34 PM I wouldn't call it generalization but more of an observation.
Am sorry but......How Can Ethiopians feel superior to Africans yet Ethiopia is poorer than most African states?
Yoniii July 7th, 2010, 12:43 PM Am sorry but......How Can Ethiopians feel superior to Africans yet Ethiopia is poorer than most African states?
As you can see from the replys, his opinion isn't shared with most people here. Some Ethiopians feel superior to anyone, not only Africans. I guess it has more to do with past history than economic development. I dare to claim that No other country in our region reps Africa as hard as Ethiopians, and this is not something new. I guess we got it from our ancestors that died defending this continent, not only Ethiopia.
abesha July 7th, 2010, 02:00 PM Mintali, it has nothing to do with economics. Ethiopia has been poorer than other countries for the past maybe 60-70 years out of our 3000 years. It's not about money.

I don't give a crap if my opinion is shared by you or anyone else. I'm stating facts and what I have observed. since I too am one I should know it as much as you or anyone else. whether or not you're comfortable with that is solely up to you. how can you state on the first part of your post that no one shares my views and then admit that might be the case by the end of it? not to mention reitretating the same point I made earlier about the reasoning for Ethiopians feeling the way they do.
anyways, enough with this. let's get back to enjoying pictures.

We have a Buna Bet (coffee house) main thread - go there vent your feeling as much as you want - Please start a thread there related to Ethiopians' attitude (general) towards fellow Africans. We'll join you!

Point I was trying to make was that your opinon obviously wasn't a common one, since most people didn't agree with you. Not saying your laying. Second part was about some Ethiopian maybe feeling superiority to everyone else and not just SS non-Ethiopian Africans.

Hersh - I am not sure about that. If that is a side-view, still, we should be able to see the curvature. On the redender, you can see they have about 9 layers with different hieght cascaded one behind the other & smoothly bending. I can't see that feature shapping up on the actual building - looks too narrow to accomodate such feature. What we are seeing is just small boxed-side-windows.

Have a look & compare A and B. If B is the side view, What happen the triangular shape of the top? I am trying to rotate it in 3D. It just doesn't make sense.

It is very simple really. What you have highlighted as "B" is actually the curvature of the building not the side profile. Now, once you visualize that you can see the slope from back to front at the top of the structure forms the "triangle".

OKAY...now, that doesn't make sense either - B doesn't add up with known drawing views:
Front view
Back view
Top view
Bottom view
Right side view
Left side view
Isometric
If it is not a side-view, then, what's the point of having B there? i.e. I can see the curvature from front view, if the building is rotated, the curvature can not be hidden totally by the side view. In other words, A is front view. Then rotate that to the right or to the left to get a side view - that gives you B with the dome in the middle now visible but B doesn't give you a complete picture of the main building – but looks rather like a sliced column.

Do people still fight for a mini-bus / or a bus to go from Arat Kilo to Piazza - which is a 10min walk?
Looking back, it makes me laugh me paying for a taxi for those short distances - like from Arat Kilo to Sidist Kilo or from Sidist Kilo to Piazza via Afnicho Ber or going from Piazza to Merkato / Ras Theater or going from Mexico to MesQel square/Stadium.
