Nice update, there are many buildings which I've never seen before.

Most sidewalks in the city looks like that. They should renovate the sidewalks when the electric company is ready to bury the lines underground.

They've done that in some areas, the question is just when that will happen in the rest of the city.

The city will probably look like a construction site in the following 10-15 years.

yeah, i think some tourists will get a real shock when they land down.

development is a funny thing- ive just been looking at Addis and Dar Es Salaam and no one would guess that they were cities in nations poorer than Ghana. Accra resembles a massive spread-out provinicial town.

But it annoys me why all this development gets little attention in the international news- its imperative so that it changes peoples outdated views of Africa :bash:

^^ I see two buildings u/c that weren't there just in August. The one in the foreground (in front of the one with orange covering) and the one in the background. The one with orange covering is in the middle and has been u/c for a while.



Also that building around Mexico Square (by the Federal Police HQ). What is it? Is it the EEPCO tower? I know it was supposed to be somewhere around there. I don't think it's the AU (wrong location for that I think) but at the same time, there is no building in that pic that looks like the AU bldg so maybe that is the one :crazy:

And that bldg near Mexico sq is definetely not EEPCO hq bldg, since the EEPCO bldg was supposed to be built right behind the Total gas station near the square. I don't think they've started bldg that one yet.
And what on earth is that huge bldg next to the National Theatre ??

the building is most likely the AU bldg....the picture was taken from the Wabe Shebelli & that's the view you'd get if you train your camera in that direction...

It can be so confusing though, because of the perception that the Africa Andnet compound is much further from Mexico Sq....there was a similar discussion (in an earlier thread) about the same AU bldg shown on a picture taken from the Sheraton...

I'm really bad with senses of direction so I'm probably way off, but I thought Old Airport was around where my arrow is. I'm pretty sure after you go round the traffic circle, you take the road contiguous to the Police HQ (on left of the bldg from our angle) and go down the hill where you see the AU bldg on your left. Correct me if I'm way off.

It just seems so close, and on much higher ground than the old bldg. My question is, if the bldg u/c is the new AU tower, where did the old one go??? Why isn't it in this pic?

you are right, that arrow is at the Old Airport area (closer to the Victory store/ ICS area & the tail end of the actual land-strip; which is visible on the right of the FedPolice bldg). You can also see on the other end the famous "Temama Foq" at a seemingly improbable location on the left of the new AU bldg.

As far as where the old OAU bldg is; my guess is that, relative to the new bldg, it's so tiny that at this distance it can barely be seen. I remember it as a skinny 7-story structure; perhaps it is among that cluster between the new structure & the Ras-Grill bldg.

The old AU building would be unlikely to be seen, it's short ~3 floors.

Don't know the name, not sure if they've decided on one. The hotel is within the AU compound, right next to the new HQ building. Here's an old fortune article about the project:
"AU Waits One More Year for New HQ, Hotel
Construction for AU’s new headquarters and hotel are delayed.

The targeted completion of the construction of the new African Union (AU) headquarters and conference hall and the five star hotel at a plot beside the African Union premises has been postponed by one year to 2012.

The headquarters is to be a 25-storey building that is under construction by China State Construction and Engineering Corporation, the full cost of 150 million dollars covered by the Chinese government. These two buildings are designed by Shanghai Condai University.

The hotel was initially intended to be owned by the AU, which had invited tenders from interested contractors. MIDROC Ethiopia, however, contacted the Union with a proposal to transfer the 90,000sqm plot of land to MIDROC, where it would construct a five-star hotel at a cost of 1.5 billion Br. AU accepted this offer and the cornerstone was laid on February 2, 2008.

The headquarters and conference hall construction was delayed because of new issues that emerged that were not considered when the agreement was signed between the AU and the government of China.

“We have asked the Chinese government to furnish the offices and the hall,” Yemeserach Hailu, Building and Equipment Division head of the AU, told Fortune.

The AU has also asked for landscaping work once the construction is completed.

The 11.3ht of land, where the AU buildings are being constructed, was given free of lease by the government, according to Yemeserach, which is estimated at 40 million dollars. Compensations to relocated residents and clearing the site had cost the city administration 10 million Br.

The AU had wanted to construct the five-star hotel to accommodate AU guests who come to Addis Abeba for conferences. When it was transferred to MIDROC Ethiopia, it was targeted that the hotel would be completed by the end of 2010.

However, construction has not yet began because the original design did not suit the land, according to Haile Assegdie, director general of Derba MIDROC. The company has now started preparing the land for construction.

The construction for the headquarters has gone up four storeys so far, while the conference hall is at the foundation level. When the Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming visited Addis Abeba, during the first week of January 2010, he approved 14.6 million dollars from the construction budget, which is to be released in phases"

Not really, you see some trees in Addis and other large towns, part of the westernization of the culture I guess. The tree you see here is at the Addis Sheraton, which mostly caters to outsiders (westerners and the like).

^^ Just trying to make a point that, if properly done, scaffoldings don't have to be steel (although preferrable). The wood scaffoldings in Addis are a real hazard though, proven by the dozens of laborers that die every year. Mainland China has actually banned bamboo scaffoldings for buildings higher than 6 or 7stories, it's HK that still uses it for skyscrapers.

Except they don't build classy neighborhood roads with no walkway. A child would see the issue here but no one cares as of now in Ethiopia. If you are a on foot tough luck walk with the cars.

In which part of Addis is this positive destruction...:)....what a construction mess!

If I'm not mistaken, that area looks around Imperial hotel. There's a brand new road currently u/c that goes from the Summit area straight through to downtown. I think this is the section across from Imperial Hotel.
I caught a glimpse of it a few months ago.

I just got back from one of the best trips in my life. Only thing I can say is that my future will probably (hopefully) be in Ethiopia.

I've got plenty of pics to share, but don't expect any quality stuff. Most pictures were taken from a bumpy car with a lousy compact camera.

What I've noticed is that the construction boom isn't only restricted to central parts of Addis, but around the city and along main roads (like the one leading to Awassa). You basically can't drive at any direction for longer than 5min without seeing at least one construction site.
