CMC stands for Cooperativa Muratori e Cementisti - di Ravenna. It is an Italian construction company that was contracted by the derg to build a residential complex in that area for expatriates in Ethiopia. The complex still stands, but the residents are mostly Ethiopians now. CMC also built the newer conference hall at the UNECA. They used to have a big presence in Ethiopia, but not any more I guess ...

Some are complete, most are not. There are a ton of them at different stages of construction, so I'll be surprised if the entire area is free of construction before 2015. There are still plenty of lots that haven't even started building.

I'm sure the owner will not just shut down such a profitable enterprise. And the ethio govt has a stake in Sheraton being open for business as well ... where else will all those African leaders stay at? Also, the city is in the process of clearing 40ha of land (yeah, that's 40x10000sq.mt. it's huge) to give to Sheraton, so I'm sure they won't just close it on a whim with all this expansion going on, for a minor misunderstanding with labor.

I don't think there's any new hotel opening up in Addis that is in Sheraton's 'weight class'. There's a Radisson, a Marriott, and two Accor hotels opening up soon, maybe others as well? These are mid range hotels, which are lacking in Addis. You have the two big hotels (Sheraton and Hilton), and then the rif raf. There wasn't anything in between. Now that's changing.

Well I was saying at Addis' rate of development there will probably be a hotel that rivals the Sheraton and the Hilton by maybe 2016 or 2020 :)

AU Grand Hotel is supposed to be bigger than both Sheraton and Hilton. It is already under construction anjacent to the new AU tower and slated to be completed by 2014. Unfortunately, the company undertaking the construction---MIDROC---has developed a reputation for being among the slowest construction companies in Ethiopia.

I told you on the new Ayat thread, Ayat is a dead case...non of the construction works are continuing as planed...it is all frozen, and I personally know people whose life saving has been swindled by Ayat cos they failed to deliver proprieties up to 5 years over due......Go and ask people around Ayat how many years the skeleton shopping mall has been rotting there with no sign of it coming any time soon....the same with apartment blocks in kasanchise...in fact they are talking of refunding the same amount of Ethiopian Birr they charged 6 or 7 years ago...
I am sorry but people need to be informed, Ayat is not a company worth dealing with.

I wonder where that neighborhood is musiccity. The city is expanding in all directions so for those of us who live abroad, there are a lot of new neighborhoods that didn't exist a few years ago. In fact, even those who live in Addis don't know a lot of these neighborhoods. My mom and I found out about Lebu together and she lives in Ethiopia.

Judging by Google Earth and Wikimapia its a very large development kind of similar to Ayat. Its in the Kolfe Keryano area of Western Addis. Does Hiber Residential Houses Construction Cooperative ring any bells? According to Wikimapia this area is called the Hiber Residential Area but you can never trust anything with "wiki" in it ;)

Intersting conversation. I think neigbhorhood names in Addis usually arise as a result of some major social or investment activities that precededed the names themselves.

For example; CMC, Ayat, and Ropack.

This gives us an idea of some of the older areas got their names as well....

examples;

Goma Kuteba:
Bomb Tera:

P.S. I predict a future villege or town to arise as a result of some huge industrial investments being undertaken as weel. e.g. MIDROC town (near MIRDOC cement factory), HABESHA town (near Habesha cement factory)

According to the Midroc Website, theres a Midroc Institute under construction but its been under construction since 1998! The excuses the Midroc website put as part of theyre slow construction are quite humorous. I think Ill put up a thread in Bunna Bet about it.

I believe it is by the same people but it certainly isnt the same location! The one I posted is near Bole Medhani Alem----an area that has become too urbanized for single family homes. The picture you posted is located on Dessie Road just before Ropack area.

if constructed properly not a lot is required. I think it's their way of curbing speed versus putting in speed bumps my only suggestion would be to paint the edge of the sidewalk so you can tell where the road ends and curb starts without hitting it.

Looks ugly alright....but, it is the only building in Addis with the latest green technology to go with it. Besides, "the project has injected $16 million to the economy and employed ~ 1,200 local workers (with good salary)." - I say, therefore, worth it!

not sure about that. If you are landing from East side, you have to be on the right side of the plane by the window to see the city. If you are on the left, you see nothing. Similarly, if you are landing from Waste side, you have to be on the left side to see the city (down town area) & the right side will be southern suburbs........I think.....

That used to be the case. It is still the case if you're landing from the east side but not from the west side. The reason is because when you land from the west side, you have to fly over the DebreZeyt road and the southern ring road wedge which are spreading south rather fast.

your next argument might be that the city is spreading fast in the westwards direction as well. Therefore I want to point out that the Bole Airport runways are almost exactly parallel to the Ayat road axil which means you can see the development from the right side but not the left side of the plan as you land. But on the other side of the runway, you've got Debrezeyt road and the southern wedge of the ring road which are perpendicular (not parallel) to the flight path. This means you can see the urbanization from both sides of the airplane's window as you land.

That's a nice pic. It's the entirely new residential neighborhood in the CMC/Ayat area. Almost all those buildings are apartments and most are u/c, and the roads are not yet asphalted.

Those houses with the wood finish look like traditional Gurage houses, excellent designs. Gurage architecture reminds me of a mix between Mongolia/Turkic traditional designs and German/northern European designs. Its quality.

(Addis Ababa) -Sheraton Addis announces plan to launch an expansion project estimated to cost 15 billion Birr.

Large-Scale Projects General Manager with MIDROC Ethiopia, Haile Assegide said during the meeting held here on Wednesday to discuss the expansion project that the Hotel has already begun preliminary activities to launch the project.


The Project, which will be launched in March 2011, will be carried out on 42,000 square meters of land here in the capital.


The General Manager said the construction of 2,000 apartments and other service facilities are included in the expansion project.

Modern trade centers and private schools will also be built, according to Haile.


Haile said bringing trained expatriates to the country is one of the preliminary activities which are well underway presently.

Soil test is also included among the activities being carried out by the hotel.


The expansion project is believed to have its contribution for the furtherance of economic, social and image building endeavor.

I have 0 faith in Midroc.

Technically, you’re absolutely right. It has already been like 14 ears since this project along with the Piazza center have been announced. However, I have reasons to believe things are different this time around.
For one thing, MIDROC management has been dissolved (Reporter, February 2011) and replaced by a foreign consultant company (I forget the name). One evidence to this development is the AU grand hotel which was previously stagnant just like the other projects but has recently started constriction at a rapid pace.
As far as the Sheraton expansion, the project management will also be undertaken by a foreign consultant along with Addis Ababa city council representatives (they want to get this done too). So it seems like MIDROC construction will only play a minor role as the junior consultant which I thing is reason to believe things are different.

Well let's hope so. Their reputation has really been badly damaged because of these ridiculous and unreasonable delays.

Oh wow a cemetery, and I thought they'd be some development done already, haha. Can you imaging the building built over that land and you work in it silently at night with no one around, you hear a faint clicking sound everyday from the far dark corner of the hall. You wipe the bead of sweat from your forehead and as you look up you see a being float past and vanish in the dark. Whohohohoho! The twilight zone!

The church started doing that maybe a decade ago. There's been a huge uproar by the public but they don't give a damn. They dig out the graves, then build shopping centers on them to make money for the church. :ohno:

Abesha is right, there was and still is a lot of opposition to it, but the city administration just goes ahead and does it anyways. I approve 100% :) The french did the same thing 200 years ago in Paris. Their cemeteries were a mess, so they dug out all the bones (millions of them) and put them in underground catacombs, and turned the old cemeteries into the beautiful parks and public spaces we see today in Paris.
