I think they are installing the covering on the dome- notice the panels at the top. I'm not sure whether it's supposed to be glass or metal, if it's glass the metal there must be protective- it does look rather cheap. The renderings are fairly ambiguous.

progress is progress and I applaud every effort but I think it's time to move the capital out of Addis. Addis is now officially an urban designer's worst nightmare. in comparison with other cities like Bahir Dar or Awassa it's amazing how disorganized everything is.

Your statement is quite a stretch. Sub-Sahara Africa has very many well planned big and small cities such as Abidjan, Nairobi, Harare, Dakar ...However, Addis Ababa is still among the best cities to live in Africa. It has good services such as air connection, hotels etc. it’s affordable, but haphazard building, overcrowding, grinding poverty and stench makes it much worse that it could be.

I'm not kidding you... hit me with a good, wide, descent sidewalk/s, any kind of open space or Boulevard in Addis. There exist NONE! As far as I know, sidewalk in Addis is a prohibited infrastructure. I can bet that there is an Article in the Constitution (just below Art. 39) which says..."death by planking if citizens think or dream about sidewalk".

Ahadu, and Skyliner123

I agree with both of you. I think we need better sidewalk, as well as presentable billboards (not design wise, but space wise), but lets not forget about the blue mini buses. What makes the city chaotic is the fact people are forced to walk on the street along side with cars because of lack of side walks, or side walks being used as parking space by cars. This even further pushes cars to jam up against each other, running over dividing lanes. The billboards are getting better, but still there is a crowding of billboards, and the placement of billboards one right on top of the other with no consideration of presentation is another issue. But, I think the biggest cause of chaos is the blue mini bus, and the way they operate. Just look at this picture and see how the taxis are creating the traffic pattern..

^^^^ I'm asuming that pic is from Sunshine! That Construction company is rapppping, violating & defacing Addis (you know what I mean)!! The owner of Sunshine should be left to rot @ Qaliti jail. Honestly, how many wild Zebras that he had to kill to cover the curb - WTF is that black and white paint. That construction company doesn't give a shittt about parking, sidewalks, open space etc..... How on earth a fire engine can reach if there is fire in that neighbourhood - look at the narrow street chocked with this unknown grass park.....so obvious and so local - no creativity at all......I'm telling you, Sunshine Construction is the father of the future Slum... that company need to be stoped ASAP!!!

I said this before and I'll say it again. Addis is a complete mess beyond repair. yeah, it's nice to see construction and progress and all of that but in a few generations people will regret these ugly messes that look like they were designed by high school kids all over the city. I guess for now progress at all cost is the priority and I understand that but at what cost I don't know. this isn't exclusive to one company, it's across the board. the whole culture needs to change and those responsible for designing and implementing of such designs need to get a better education/perspective.

I can only hope this level of incompetence as far as city planning and construction doesn't spread to other cities that have the potential to become great places in the near future.

There are many buildings that looked ugly at first, but eventually grew on the population and became beloved parts of the landscape. Those "ugly messes" may well become part of the character of the city.

indeed.

There are many buildings that looked ugly at first, but eventually grew on the population and became beloved parts of the landscape. Those "ugly messes" may well become part of the character of the city.

that argument makes no sense just for the simple fact that we're not dealing with just few buildings but with a complete collapse in city planning that includes streets, clean spaces, sidewalks among other essential elements of a city.

but yeah I don't want to bring down the mood of progress by any means here. one can say it's easy for you to criticize but I love the city (obviously) and it just pains me to see why we don't posses the creativity or intelligence to make the most out of this construction explosion.

well it's definately not a lack of intelligence. i would say it's poor creativity combined with an affinity for the european over the african.

^^ yeah, whatever the case it maybe the results on the ground so far have been disastrous. usually you can blame it on being poor or not having enough money to build anything. once you start to build there's no excuse to not do it properly. the ancient Egyptians and Greece had a better planned city than current Addis. how people go to school for engineering/city planning and still come up with such unsustainable way of doing things is beyond me.

-sigh-

I swear, I'm done.

Does Addis have a clearly defined skyline? Or is it just one of those cities that's sprouting up everywhere (like lagos for example)? I only ask because most city's skylines leave an impression in my head of the city so that I can recognize it..but with Addis, I don't get that.

Definitely the latter. I say whatever works, works. Forcing regulations on where people should build to have some sort of aesthetic flair just shows that commerce is government-regulated and that's bad.

Zoning is appropriate though. Per type of buildings, per trade, shopping, Art, entertainment, night life, etc... kind of like Tokyo. Tokyo is an ugly metropolis but its the most efficient city in the world. The shinjuku (one of the city in the Tokyo metropolis) train station serves a million passengers every day. A 45 mile oval shaped train line called "The Yanamote line" serves the 10 or so cities that make up central tokyo. Each city has a more or less narrow focus, e.g electronics, high class shopping, business, entertainment, Red light district, etc... Other train lines that go to the outer reaches of the city take from the yanamote line. E.g the Shinkansen (the high speed train) take off from the Shinjuku station and zip you out to hinterland Japan.

Addisaba is already showing some characteristics like that, Piassa, Merkato, Bole, sidist Kilo, Legehar, etc... all feed you a different vibe. Development should follow that trend.

No, not really. You have the Nat'l Theatre/Churchill Ave/Legehar as one cluster, and Bole Ave as another, and both are so long you really don't have a coherent skyline. (BTW, Legehar is the train station, corrupted version of Le Gare)

But the Nat'l Theatre area seems to be pulling ahead. (my comp. background)

Bole

Then you have the AU HQ doing it's own thing.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3408/5820984232_e80af58e29_b.jpg

Depending on who you ask, that is.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5302/5616044475_c1476bc38b_b.jpg

I would actually prefer zoning, would like to see more wall-to-wall, multistory developments.

required info
- name of the source of the image
- link to the source
- info on what we are seeing.

Wow, that has changed a lot since I have been there in February 2009. At that time there was not even construction going on. Churchill Ave is awesome - because it is so steep...I dont know many other innercity avenues that are so wide and steep.

It had a good view of the wide city. Now they are busy messing that up. Shouldn't have touched that area beyond 1 story bldgs if they could afford it. Can't believe ppl can't see this, so busy ruining one of the best features of the city. Look at the before and after photos.

Do you have the article?

It's such a mess though, but it seems somewhat nicer than earlier stuff. Still using that concrete though.

Simfan,

I believe your question was for me. The article from Bloomburg-Businessweek and it is titled: "World's Cheapest Expensive Cities". It looks like Addis Ababa ranks no. 4 as the world's 'cheapest most expensive city'. Strange but interesting....here is the link;

^^ Good clip. At the 2:50 minutes mark, all those buildings you see are built by mahber; about 16 apartments per building. It was amazing to see quite how many were being built; it stretches as far as the eye can see.

woow, just imagine what they would look like today. I think Addis is going places with all the developments undertaking and it almost seem as if it's even growing at a faster pace than I am.
I guess congrats and goodluck with the future my friends
