Most of the points foccus in the film i can link with my city (Luanda) situation right now, although we still have 2 or 3 times more work to do. Great to city Africa growing.

I think Luanda may turn into one of the finest cities in the world considering

I think they are also but what I actually meant to say was EEPCO not Telecom.
It looks like about that size also:EEPCO HQ (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=9382941&postcount=70)

but I did read somewhere else that Telecom has started a new hq also.

I agree Skipperbill, it may not look bad but the fact that sidewalks are clean adds to the beauty of the city, I just read an article this morning that claims according to Forbes Addis is the 6th dirtiest city in the world. I just think a lot can be done with little when it comes to being able to clean up the city, and in my opinion clean sidewalks are as important as tall buildings.

great pics by the way

It seems an interesting city. Specially knowing the Ethiopian history, different of any African country in many aspects. I bet many monuments, churches and some buildings that we see in the pictures have lots of historical value.

Great pics!

There are some great buildings! And we can see poverty and wealth side by side.. I'm used to see that in my coutry as well :-P ...

It seems an interesting city. Specially knowing the Ethiopian history, different of any African country in many aspects. I bet many monuments, churches and some buildings that we see in the pictures have lots of historical value.
Abcolutley! Yes. Ethiopia is also taking lessons from Brazil in ethanol production which will probably help finally reduce oil import dependence. Thanks for your kind words mate.

Thank you Mike :)

It's sooooo hard to find pictures, I wish I'd taken pictures when I was there.

Here's a very recent video I found. Watch starting from 1:30-2:35.
When they are driving up the hill at around 1:32, you can spot about 4 new buildings under construction. It's hard to see the ones on the right.
I was there in early August, and at that point, for all 4 buildings, they were just starting to dig for their foundations. They are already several floors up.

That last picture is really interesting. I've never seen Addis from that angle before.

About that mansion I posted, here is a newspaper announcement about it:

Mansion Inaugurated by Sunshine Construction Owner

A modern villa constructed by Samuel Tafesse, owner and general manager of Sunshine Construction Plc, was inaugurated on January 13, 2008. The event was held on the birthday of the investor and his daughter’s wedding. Though the mansions, located across from Bole Medhanialem Church, were appreciated by many, the disturbing sound the fireworks created that day has annoyed many.

Those last pictures are of this Sunshine Construction building:

http://www.sunshinecon.com/images/Constraction10.jpg

This render is really ugly. The one they have by the construction is GREAT and the building will be really awesome when done.

Right in front, by the Bole side, is where the Accor Hotels are getting built. Right next to them, there is a render of a nice building to be built there too. Across the street from the Accor hotels, another building is getting built too. There is a render on the fenced site and it's a really nice looking building. So that's a total of like 5 buildings right there.

Yeah, that's looking towards the NW at Lex Plaza. I stayed in that dinky pinkish-yellowish building to the left for 2 to 3 weeks.

While I was there I got to see them installing a new (fully submerged) sewer system running down Haile Gebresalassie Rd. Some small shops had to be disassembled for it.

On the right hand side, you can see the blue "fence". That thing was not there when I was there last. I'm so glad they're building something on it. It was just an eyesore, not too mention a health hazard, what with free running sewage and crumbling houses.

You can also see construction right on the next block, further down. The render said it was a shopping mall (small one) with a cafe on the rooftop. The view should be amazing.

I'm not sure what they're building on the right side, but that's also a new addition.

Yes, that's true. Churchill road has been pretty much ignored. But just on this stretch until Tikur Anbessa high school, there are from what I can see 4 bldgs u/c on the left side and 2 on the right side.

Another section of Addis that is dormant is Beklo Bet road (or Debre Zeit Rd). It's dead, but there are now plans to double the size of that street. It runs from Meskel square to the Gotera Interchange. That area will have a huge facelift when that's done, and you can bet that construction will just take off at that point.

Beautiful photos from capital city of coffee's cradle country. Is it cold? Because I've read that it's located in a high location over sea level.
The weather is really the best I've seen anywhere.

During the rainy season (June to Early September) - the temperatures drop at night; sometimes below freezing (less than 0 C/32F).
They then rise during the day and usually stabilize around 55-60F or 12-17C I think.

During the dry season (Mid-September to February then May to mid-June), it's warmer.
At night it's around 45-55F (7-12C) and during the day it can hit 75F/25C.

I've never seen it hotter than 26 C and there is no humidity (very little in May). The coldest I've ever experienced was October 2006 when it dropped to 2 C during my commute around 8 am.
The year before that, a record low of around -7 C was recorded.

So there you go, more information than you bargained for

Excellent pictures! The black/white building in the first pic is home to the second branch of the Zebra Grill. It has an awesome décor and views of Addis. Not too fond of the food though.

In the second picture, the area in the right side, by the pavement, is boarded up and ready for construction. I'm not sure what's going up there. There was a legal dispute between the people who live and work there and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (i think it's the right bank).
The area was giving to the CBE for their new headquarters (something like 30 floors) but the people/businesses in that spot complained because according to the law, they have to first be given the chance to build before anyone else is allowed.
I believe the courts ruled for the CBE but I know the businesses were appealing. I guess they lost their appeal.

Addis Abeba may be a poor city, but its low crime rate is something that you must be proud of!. Where I live is not as safe as Addis Abeba or Ouagadougou, low crime rates are sth to be really proud of, congratulations!.

I'd heard it was a residential tower but I don't think the developers are sure themselves. My father wanted to buy a condo in Addis so he went to check them out and they were not sure. :ohno:
It has been in this state for a while now with no construction so I don't know what's holding it up.

On the first picture you posted, the road on the upper right hand side is the EU road I believe. The future plan of that road is to build a tunnel that goes under Bole Rd to connect it with the Bole Michael Road.
Let me get a screen shot to show it to you.

Here it is:

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/4358/eupt3.th.jpg (http://img292.imageshack.us/my.php?image=eupt3.jpg)

Construction is supposed to start sometime this year.

Here is the Olympia junction in front of Dembel. This road is also getting a makeover with an overpass/underpass system (not sure if there's a name for that).

Bole Rd (in red) is supposed to go under the Meskel Flower Rd (in blue). This is also supposed to be started this year.

These developments are really in need bearing in mind that Bole road is the only way to get to Meskel Square from the Airport.

Driving on Bole road is currently a nightmare, so every proposed improvement is welcome.

Indeed, Addis Ababa is changing it's face rather quickly, progressively and it's keeping it's positive pace it seems. Quite underrated also, no ? Not much people mention or are aware of this city's development and pace. Other cities on the continent of Africa or eslewhere appears to be much more mentioned for example.

angcammoc

I think the reason it is so underrated is beacause it hs had a history of violence and still has in some part...so people wouldn't think there may be development going on in Addis ababa...It is very underrated and i won't mind if shehas her own section, because i see lots of construction everywhere....

Just a question, who is fuelling all the rapid urban development? Ethiopians (in the diaspora)?
Kenyan investors? Gulf Arabs?

abesha

Matthias, the construction is just Ethiopians, both local and from the diaspora. Foreigners are not allowed to own land in Ethiopia (even Ethiopians are not allowed although I believe Addis is a special case).

Land is for the government, the people only can lease the land for the state. It's a relic from the Marxist times and the current government still believes in a lot of communist ideology. This is also one of the reasons for rural poverty/ backward agriculture. :ohno: :bash:
Ethiopia is still more a communist state than a capitalist society.

^^ Ok, now that I know that I consider Ethiopia as the best country in Africa. Communism, coffee, highglands and low crime rate. I'd prefer to live in a country like that, safe and not in a capitalist country like South Africa (with the highest crime rate in the world). It's not a critic, It's my opinion. It just need some good government and I'm sure it will grow up with no need of help from the outside or capitalism.

By the way... Has always Ethiopia been a land-locked country (with no sea)?. It's something I've been asking myself. The most of all african countries have always had the same borders?.

Not always offically landlocked....its really a long story but in the modern era, Ethiopia
regained Eritrea (http://www.state.gov/cms_images/map_eritrea.jpg) after WWII. Ethiopia was then no longer landlocked..

Eritrea gained indepence in 1993 though, so Ethiopia has been lanlocked
again for about a decade and a half now.

complex, yeah I know lol.

Rezidor Arrives in Ethiopia: New Radisson Hotel in Addis Ababa

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Regulatory News:

The Rezidor Hotel Group (STO:REZT) arrives in Ethiopia and announces a brand new Radisson hotel in the capital city Addis Ababa – the property will feature 209 rooms and open in Q4 2009. “With this signing we are adding a new country to our portfolio and are now present in 52 countries across EMEA”, comments Kurt Ritter, President & CEO of Rezidor. “In the Middle East and Africa we are now having 47 hotels with almost 11,500 rooms in operation and under development.”

ha ha, actually you are correct in asking that question because there have been shortages of construction materials while all this building was going on, and cement prices have shot up.

AS a follow up:

NO CEMENT!

By Tedla Yeneakal

A severe cement shortage has hit the country and forced a halt to major construction in the city, after a major foreign exchange reserve shortfall faced by banks in the country.
The shortage was first witnessed a couple of months ago, when the government banned those allegedly importing cement with black market foreign currency.
According to some small scale contractors who buy cement from the market, with the price inflated slightly as compared to previous times, it is hard for them to find cement for their construction needs.
Cement retail shops have been closed after they were found escalating prices some weeks ago and that move by the government has led to the stabilization of the price.
Mugher Cement Enterprise, the biggest player of the five cement factories in the country, could only meet five percent of the total demand.
According to a survey done by Mugher during the last Ethiopian fiscal year, the country’s demand for cement is 17.8 million tons annually, whereas the country’s total production is only limited to 1.9 million tons per annum.
Mugher cement factory accounts for the lion’s share of the cement market in Ethiopia with a production capacity of 900,000tn along with Dire Dawa cement factory with 72,000tn production per annum, Messebo cement factory with a capacity of producing 700,000tn annually (an endowment firm of the ruling party) and the new entrant Abyssinia Cement, a subsidiary of Abyssinia Steel. http://www.capitalethiopia.com/archive/2008/june/week2/local_news.htm#6
