I agree with you Mike that it's chaotic, but that's because they are not planned developments.

The picture you quoted is a planned real estate development out of the outskirts of the city so it looks "clean" and organized because there's space there.
The others are from neighborhoods in the congested parts of town.
IMO, eventually, way in the future, those downtown will probably make way for towers.

I agree with Arzaranh too. At least those in the middle of town reflect the personality and taste of the owners. Those in planned suburban developments are just cookie-cutter so nothing unique or interesting about them.

well in that sense you are completely missing the point of designing suburbs. they need to be clean, accessible, organized and family friendly. more importantly also affordable. which is why people leave the city to live in them. the fact that they looks similar means nothing really. imagination should run wild in a city with tall buildings and art centers, libraries and such or in the outskirts of privately built large multimillion dollars houses.

Abesha, I agree. I think the fact that there are large fences (almost as tall as the houses, in some cases) are also a distraction, not to mention the poorly designed narrow streets almost instantly take away the beauty of the house and the entire area. let's just hope more designed and clean suburbs (as in the one in the pic above) will pop up soon.

but I hate these grand fences and walls that people build around their houses. I guess its difficult to seperate a habesh from his sense of "privacy" in Addis. :lol: ......but in all seriousness, these giant walls have got to stop.

all the sarcasm aside, actually that's not a bad idea, considering the fact that Ethiopia's population almost doubled in less than 20 years in an unsustainable economy. it's really nice to see all the development tho. more pics please.
