The building u/c was having the foundation dug when I left. Nice to see some progress.

Actually, all those houses were built by people who live there. A few of them house the architects of some of the renders in the East Africa thread.

There's definitely a middle class that's emerging, it just isn't as widespread as it should be.

These next two pics are from the same area apparantly. Look at that density! This is the type of urban development you see alot in Japan, which is what I was talking about earlier. I want to turn all inner city kebeles into something like these areas.

In Meskel Square,

The three buildings u/c will be hotels. The one on the right will be the Marriott (I'm pretty sure). The other two are Accor hotels (Novotel and Ibis).

You can find the renders hidden somewhere in the East Africa thread.

Japopian

Many building facades especially in downtown addis becomes darker because of the pollution. The building could be one year old but look like a 50 year old building just because of the pollution and to get that dark coulered facade to it's originally color you have to paint it and owners are not that interested in paying for a new paint all the time so buildings in addis downtown could look really :ohno:.
Well you could build apartments in such a way that they are easy to maintain but in downtown you have fancy office buildings. Here in sweden the downtown is composed of century old buildings which are maintained continuously....so i guess that it's all about money.

btw welcome to the forum:banana:! We need more Ethio forumers!

yes but i think they need to still aim at getting other things done like a)100% tarmac coverage on all roads even the smallest alleyways b)roadside paving on all main streets c)sort out the sewage system d)waste management

baby steps my friend, baby steps. remember this is still one of the poorest nation on earth.

sorry but this one pisses me off!

yeah (as soon as I saw the pic..I was demolishing and building stuff in my head to change how it looks...lol) and that's one of the major centers in the city. as much as I love Addis so many things on here piss me off as well. the fact that side walks are not fully covered (so easy to do) and don't even get me started on the ugly fences people build that would just take away the beauty of the city... it's the little things that make the difference but somehow the city planners seem to not be aware of that. other than that the city is showing an amazing progress and those responsible for it's growth deserve all the credit. maybe in the future attention to detail will be part of the construction world. thank you guy also for the pictures.

Hi Mike,
I agree with you -"little things that make the difference"

I am new for this site i.e. as a member - glad to see a non-political Forum though!

Addis is changing for good....Good to see such Devp.

However, the city admin needs to do a lot inexpensive but simple things:

1) Iron - Sheet -Roof: The city, no matter how, gets disfigured because of the rusty roofs - It has to be banned for good / or force the owners to paint it green or red (handout free roof paint).

2) Lack of Pavement / side-walk - GOD, I feel like going there and build it for free. (Why is it so difficult for them?)

3) Fences: Need to be banned for good - at least for some section of the city.

4) "Yellow paint" for street/road marking rather than that uggly looking "black & white" - I hate the Zebra paint - it is every where!

Yosef - Thank you for your effort!

Mike,
You are my man!
Let me tell you, I've got a friend - we spent hours & hours talking (over the phone of course) about the city of Addis. We've already demolished and re-build that city from ground up - particularly the side-walks & fences.

It is so good to see such a rare ABESHA like you.

Yosef,
Do you have any pics showing 70 dereja black pavement?

oh wow, I thought I was the only one. welcome to SCC. I really really really hate those "black and white/Zebra" paints as well. I don't know who came up with it but that person needs to be arrested..lol.. I've noticed that's how they paint in Dubai as well. it's just sad. I've always felt like maybe I was just being a bit harsh and at times a perfectionist but when you really think about it it doesn't take much to make Addis one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. people just need a diversity of opinions and also a different perspective.

I agree Tarrex. if this is the best Addis city planners can do then it's sad. what is more frustrating is such things don't cost much to build and preserve. people just need to have the willingness and the cultural awareness. still Addis is doing way better than it has in recent years, and that should count for something.

CBE Set to Put up Skyscrapers

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) is set to construct two seven-storey buildings to house its branches in Megenagna and Merkato areas in Addis Abeba.

The two buildings are part of CBE’s plan to construct a total of 17 buildings in various areas across the capital.

The tender CBE floated last week to select contractors for the construction of the buildings indicates that the Megenagna Branch would have two basements, one semi-basement, and a G+7 building, while that of the Pawlos Branch in Merkato would have two basements and a G+7 structure.

Pawlos Branch, which is now operating in another building in Merkato area, will continue with its operations, while the new branch in a different location would be given the same name as the new building in which it is to be housed. CBE’s new building would be built on a plot near Merkato, Amede Gebeya.

The site for the Megenagna Branch is on the way from Megenagna Ring Road Roundabout to Gergi, inside the taxi station in the Bole District of Kebele 24.

The design work for the two buildings has already been completed after the draft technical designs for the buildings were finalized by the recently established Construction Coordination Project Office of the bank.

Addis Mebratu Consulting Architects and Engineers (AMCAE), a private firm established in 2004, did the design work of the two buildings.

AMCAE won the tender CBE floated for the development of the designs after competing with Bet Consulting and National Engineers, according to sources.

AMCAE also developed the architectural design for Dire International Hotel in Adama town of the Oromia Regional State, and Chilalo Building in Beklo-Bet area of Addis Abeba, according to Addis Mebratu, chief architect of AMCAE.

CBE plans to undertake construction of 17 buildings to house its branches in different parts of Addis, which includes the new Lideta branch, which is also planned to be built near the present Lideta Branch of the bank in Helen Building. But CBE has secured plots for only three of the branches and its future headquarters in central Kirkos District, along Yohannes Street.

The Megenagna and Pawlos Branches would be erected on plots that range between 1,600-2,000Sqm, construction of which is expected to begin soon.

The bank has already established a construction coordination project office of its own to monitor the construction works.

The 65-year old CBE has 205 branches all over the country, and is in the process of opening its 206th branch in Juba; southern Sudan. CBE has 46 branches in the Capital, of which 17 are located in facilities rented from private establishments and individuals.

Flower industry. It's now very easy to find really pretty flowers in Addis. It's become very common to take big bouquets of roses to various events, from graduations to births, or just because.
A lot of the flowers sold in Addis, from what I've been told, are those that didn't meet the export quality. Personally though, I thought they were GORGEOUS.

Is the naming of buildings, businesses and shops. I think it should be made illegal to use names that are meaningless but also that are clearly foreign.
DH Geda Tower, Sunshine Gold smith, give me a break.
Also they should force people to use ADs in Ge'ez letters and then use Latin in smaller letters. I was disgusted on what I saw in Oromian cities, to do the same in Addis is inexcusable.

problem is there are very limited number of people who think Addis as their common home or Kitir Gibi. People think Addis a place to make money and then live in their homes, the city is anyone's place they are not concerned about that much. This attitude needs to change. If people think like you in Addis, (Although its easier for us in diaspora to think that way) the change would have been immense.

I completely agree with you.

DH Geda however is indigenous, it stands for Duguma Hunde Geda (the late CEO of the company).

Arzaranh, it's not an inferiority complex. If anything, Ethiopians have a superiority complex.

However, English is seen as the modern, "cool" thing to do, mostly an influence of the fact that there's tons of Ethiopians in the diaspora.

That's true, but to be honest there are only a few mosques in addis compared to churches. If you look at Addis ababa today you see that Addis mostly consists of churches. But recently many big mosques are being built across addis. I'll try to find some pics from mosques in addis.

Using Ge'ez for signs is the norm. At most businesses and buildings you see Ge'ez and English; I think they're usually the same size, but usually with Ge'ez on top or to the left. The main exceptions are foreign businesses, like some of the airlines that have large Latin signs.

But Oromia is a very different situation since they use the Latin alphabet for writing in Oromo.

i think some of the building names are quite funny. i think its ok to name apartment complexes with those kind of names like "Diana Heights" (that was one building according to my brother)! but i agree that office buildings should have ethiopian-origin names.

and yeah ge`ez should be standard. its ok for clothes shop names and bars that wanna seem modern, but basic signs etc...in japan and korea everything is in the native language, it just looks....nicer i think!! english looks tacky when up on huge signs etc, amharic looks beautiful on the other hand, just kinda like having kanji or hiragana!
