completion is in Ginbot. I am not even sure if they will complete the parks in and around it by then. The park Idea is good if kept nice.

They say they are building pedestrian way so fools will not be waking on it, although I bet ya my word people will be walking all over it even then.

I hate the name they are giving it.

This is the such a huge waste of money. A simple working trafic light could have solved the congestion problem, the amount of cars that cross through this junction is not even close to the amount of cars that travel on Uhuru highway in Nairobi. The money could have been used in much better way by expanding rural roads or better city roads. This junction does not add a value to the country.

Rural roads are expanding alright and the city roads are getting even better. The construction of the juntion didnt prevent that. The junction is not a waste of money at all...the number of vehicles that go through this junction might not be even close to those that go through Uhuru highway and it shouldn't be cause Uhuru highway is a mess during rush hour. And I know that in the near future the volume of traffic that goes through the junction is going to be huge and it is a good thing the government didnt wait till it became like Uhuru highway. Plus it adds aesthetic value to the city. Besides, you shouldn't worry about waste of money cause this is funded mostly by the chineses.

People are using the junction as a walkway, just as any road in Addisaba. check this.. before that pic is removed from this site http://www.addisfortune.com/

Funny to watch our people having a time of their life on that junction. Education would have been key. Communicate to the people, its not a walk way.

exactly, seeing this is so disappointing, to say the least. whoever is responsible for educating the public has failed doing his/her job. why not do a 30 second spot to air just before the biggest soccer game or have flyers or even signs to let people know that a highway is not a walkway. isn't there any department responsible for public awareness? there's no point in building it if people don't know what to do with it.

as the city grows so will the traffic and atleast the government wanted to be ready for traffic growth instead of having the traffic mess that has engulfed nairobi although now they are trying to fix it.

i understand the need for better city and rural roads but i hope u also understand that rome was not built in one day, one step at a time.

the people chilling on the interchange are a clear sign of the lack of management in africa. they spend millions of dollars building that magnificent interchange and they cant spend afew thousand dollars to educate the public on the do's and dont's.:nuts:

Believe it or not, there aren't people who are responsible or think like you and me. That is why we should take what we discuss here and send something to the responsible authority. Why not invite someone from the Ethiopian city authority to join us on this forum. We can bug him/her whenever necessary.

Actually, I will send them email on my side. If someone responds I will post it here. If you can do something on your side that will be cool.

lamrof, I sense a touch of complex in your comment, I think you have problem with Ethiopia, perhaps you should take your problems to the right thread. this thread is purely for development related news, not for dirty politics which I am sure you know hasn't got you no where. sorry if I am being too direct but it is one of your comments I bumped in to on the Eritrean/Asmra thread that led me to believe you are a typical dirty minded Eritrean pretending to be ethiopian.

Whats wrong with that comment. Addis is a dirty city that needs cleaning up.

I did specifically mention his comment I saw on Asmara thread, in which he insulted the people, not just the city. here is the link.
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=382923&page=4

"Asmarinos have a good culture of cleanliness. Sorry to say, my city Addis abeba is a big pile of garbage full of smelly and dirty people. I was there last September after 23 years in exile, I was disappointed. I love to visit Asmara if they government allow me".

But I can understand if you are defending your other self.
let's not drift off the subject. let's concentrate on new African developments. not just some old Italian cemetery. This not Italian thread, this is an african thread.

trust me, you are right in saying Addis is an amazing city, cos it is a city of contrast. As you can see on this thread it is a fast growing city with it's old problems still around, but given the speed it's growing, those problems will soon be history. Ignore the pessimist and stay positive. seeing is believing.

Eucalyptus Scaffolding - Addis Style

Note: Scaffolding is a temporary frame used to support people and material in the construction or repair of buildings and other large structures. It is usually a modular system of metal pipes.

I'm just wondering.... Is there any Metal Scaffolding Manufacturing company in Ethiopia? / or Renting Scaffolding?

:bash::bash::bash::bash: Some thing has to be done about tree chopping, this is definitely not sustainable, ethiopia will soon turn in to a desert, if the government doesn't act and this trend continues. surely, metal scaffolding is not that difficult to obtain, but people just don't seem to be bothered cos they think there is abundant natural resource to abuse. I am thinking of writing a letter to a concerned authority (if there is any) to make metal scaffolding compulsory. any suggestion?

Dear eliasbeef,
Absolutely agree with you....however, we should and must stop seeing eucalyptus tree (BTW, credit to king Minelik II for ignorantly introducing it to Ethiopia) as an abundant natural resource and solution for everything. The truth is that the tree is a cursed weed which needs to be eradicated from Ethiopia. It is not a native / indigenous plant. It competes with native flora/& fona and destroys everything.....I say, Hell to eucalyptus Tree! Bring Back YeHagger Zaff!

.... I am thinking of writing a letter to a concerned authority (if there is any) to make metal scaffolding compulsory. any suggestion?

Don't bother!!!
Sadly enough, the current Mayor of Addis Abba either he is in comma or third stage deep sleep! They can't even run a decent website advertising their own work and achievement - which I strongly admit that they have done a lot! By now, however, we should have a 3D version of the Addis's Master Plan, photo/pic & info data base etc. up and running on the web attracting investors - how unlucky we are!

I agree with you, mayors of Addis as well as Bahir dar have achieved quit a lot, but just like in most things, even when we do well, we tent to fail on minor things such as what you mentioned .
the other thing that bugs my head every time i visit home is, people's lack of imagination in regards to choosing the right tree for the right place. as you rightly said there is an obsession with eucalyptus and "thsid" sorry I do NOT know the English term for it. Ironically both trees are economically worthless as you can't use them as timbers or any other valuable purpose other than firewood. I do understand the ordinary citizens lack of knowledge but why don't the authorities create awareness about planting more economically valuable trees? plus, how about encouraging people to plant the many colorfulness indigenous trees you would find mainly in south west ethiopia? I think we have got long way to go in terms of good imagination, perhaps because of our history of isolation and lack of exposure, but it's about time we open our eyes and learn from others.

eliasbeef,
We are outrageously poor in everything - poor imagination, poor attention to details, poor creativity, greed i.e. it is not my property attitude..etc. .......Remember, - we are still using the same shape for our Ye Buna Jebena for the last hundreds of years without making it flat-bottom for stability - it is still round bottom & we are still making extra cushion for it......We are STUCK.

The current development in ethiopia reminds me of a travel blog I once read where by an English woman said " all Ethiopia needs is one 'war free generation', the potential is just mind blowing "
she wasn't only impressed by Ethiopia's potential to grow but understood the country's troubled past. not many foreigners do that.

They have got a restaurant, several workshops and some greenhouses for plants and flowers.
Most of the work in this commercial part of Selam is done by adults.

yeah curls were pretty big in the U.S. for a while among the diaspora in the early 2000's. They are not really "in" anymore but alot of habesha still like them  . I think they may make a comeback sooner or later like most fads/trends/fashion styles.

Say No to Bajajs... I really hate them!!!

The three-wheeler motor vehicles, popularly known as Bajajs, do not flock in downtown Adama (Nazreth) like they used to. They have been banned from operating on the main streets of the town.

While Adama is working to decrease the number of Bajajs, the three wheelers are beginning to appear in Addis Abeba. Currently, 37 Bajajs are licensed by the Addis Abeba Branch Office (This is really BAD)

some interesting comments made on addis by some guy on a website

ddis Ababa being the socio, economic and political capital of Ethiopia,as is the whole nation, is facing all kinds of challenges. The ever growing number of its residents, lack of Transportation system,Sanitation and Waste disposal, environmental pollution,Housing ,modern communication and information system infrastructures but most importantly lack of visionary leadership has exacerbated its problems. a brief look into some of the above stated challenges, will give us a hint up to how much we should be worried in the future of our beloved city.

* it is unthinkable to satisfy public transport by just few thousand taxis and public buses for a city of millions as Addis Ababa. There must be other means of transportation as subway train system ,other electric driven city buses etc.At present the city may not afford to built all these infrastructures but we should be able to see the city is going in to the right directions.
* I am not mistaken when i say there are no sanitation and waste disposal system in the capital.Off course, there are few sewerage systems that drain into the nearest river crossing the city or to streams within the city.It is also common to see sewer flowing right by your door step in the middle of the day.It is not a matter of spending billions to make it right that is needed, it is a change in peoples attitude that must be changed too.
* Housing is the other big problem. If you are a college graduate or even have five or ten years of experience ,you can’t still afford to rent a dissent home let alone owning it.These problem can only addressed only if the private sector is actively involved. The government can make deal with private investors in real estate business so that they can provide affordable services to the public. At present, you have to invest millions if you try to purchase a house from one of private real estate developers. It is very frustrating to note that the government is trying to control every aspect of our lives. Why is everything have to be done by the government? which results, time and again, total mess in both quality and quantity.
* although, the road density in the city is the smallest even when compared to neighboring countries capitals,Addis Ababa leads in the number of traffic accidents.Officially, the city roads are owned by Addis Ababa Roads Authority ,however in practice the roads doesn’t seem to have owner, one can simply see roads which are constructed just a few years back are highly damaged including the ring road which suffers from faulty design, construction work and miss management.Roads of such type, flexible pavements with butmen surfacing and selected material fill as sub base are basically designed with great protection from storm water . Routine maintenance works which may involve single person with normal hand tool should have been enough in most cases to save most common road damages in the city.Unfortunately, during rain season sometimes it is very difficult to differentiate between the road and storm water drainage.why is these happening?somebody must be responsible for all these basic in tolerable mistakes.Another sad fact is the general public attitude and usage of the roads by both the pedestrians and drivers…….why don’t people use the crossing bridges over the ring road instead risk their life and try to cross an 80km/hr freeway? more on addis soon….

Debre Zeit, Ethiopia - For more than 20 years, Feseha Gebreab's life has revolved around one animal: the donkey. Each day, in his modestly sized office decorated with donkey illustrations and photos, he thinks about how to make their lives better. It's appropriate to his job title: Dr. Gebreab is director of The Donkey Health and Welfare Project, based at Addis Ababa University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia.

The location isn't as random as it may seem. More than 5 million donkeys live in Ethiopia – more than in any other African nation, and second in the world only to China. Drive throughout the country and donkeys – in their gray and brown hues – are a frequent sight along the arid roads. The animal is indigenous to the country and well equipped for the climate and rugged landscape. It's therefore one of the main sources of transportation. Farmers and peasants rely on donkeys to carry just about everything, including grain, fuel, dung, sandstone, and water.

Despite the reliance people have on donkeys for their livelihoods – Gebreab stresses the animal is vital to the country's economy – Ethiopians on the whole hold an exceptionally low regard for the animal. As a result, many are neglected and have health problems. Some succumb to treatable parasites. Many have back sores, the result of poor saddling and the fact that they frequently must carry up to twice their body weight. Sometimes they fall prey to hyenas, because – unlike the more-valued sheep or goat – donkeys aren't put into protective quarters at night.

Gebreab wants all this to stop. By offering free medical attention for donkeys as well as educational programs on how to take better care of them, he hopes to change Ethiopians' views of the animal.

Such a shift in thinking could bear tangible results. In countries where donkeys are well cared for, they can live on average 27 years, according to The Donkey Sanctuary, a Britain-based charity that provides partial funding to Gebreab's project. In Ethiopia, the average donkey lives between nine and 13 years. When an Ethiopian family loses a donkey, it can be a perilous moment. "For some families," Gebreab says soberly, "a donkey means life or death."

A message to Mayor Kuma Demeksa

Dear Mr. Mayor,

The color Red represents blood and anger!

For God sake - remove this uggly color commbination (Red + White / White + Black)
from the city of Addis. Why not Amber/Yellow / Gold + Silver!
Try to be Creative without being EXPENSIVE!

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/213/481339625_03cf468a45_o.jpg

Here is an Example! You do not need to invent a million dollar wheel.
Look at the side-walk, The Silver Fence & the Yellow Line.
Is it really difficult to have that??????
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3396/3642676781_1ecff23a8c_b.jpg

Here is another Example:
1) Foot Path / Side Walk: Simple and clean.

2) Observe how the Yellow Zebra Crossing makes a huge difference with appearance.

3) Check out the Fences. Light Color and attractive not repulsive - not Heavy Handed!

4) Look how the city police uniform is cheap but clean and attractive. Makes the cops look smart.

Holland Car, an Ethiopian company founded in 2005, recently introduced Abay (Blue Nile), a localized version of the LiFan 510.
All parts are imported from China and assembled by Ethiopian workers, supervised by LiFan technicians.
This is one of Africa's few (count 'em on one hand) automobile assembly enterprises.

Yes that Zebra paint must go...PERIOD.
& yes....a construction madness to the core!
Right now, a construction Rule of Law doesn't exist.
.... i.e. looks to me destruction and construction are going on at the same rate.
(See example below - Sidewalk is abused & trust me, will never recover!).

Beauty in Japan is different than in Ethiopia. Honestly I did not see as many beautiful women as I am used in Addis Ababa. However the few beautiful ones I saw in Tokyo are actually breathtaking. I don't know if there is a minority tribe in Japan, some of the women are different, tall, delicate and extremely beautiful. How is that possible? How could some women look so different than the rest?

I don't know if there is a minority tribe in Japan, some of the women are different, tall, delicate and extremely beautiful. How is that possible? the thing about japan is that i find that there are not many extremes, the women are all GENERALLY good looking. like a 7 out of 10. but then when they stand out (as in, they are either beautiful or ugly) then they are the extreme. extremely beautiful or ugly.

but japanese girls REALLY know how to work with clothes, makeup and hair dye to make themselves beatiful. they can get away looking (what people would call in the west) "slutty" because firstly there isnt a culture here to call a woman a slut based on her clothes - people just see it as her fashion and she likes wearing it. japan is very open about what you can wear, a guy can wear high heel shoes, a girl can wear mini shorts and stripper shoes, a maid outfit, even middle aged men can dress as a school girl and nobody will say ANYTHING, its not their POSITION to judge someone because of the clothes they like to wear. also japanese girls are tiny, and dont really have hips or a behind, or breasts (which they ALWAYS cover up) so alot ofthe time you see them in hot pants and heels during the day whilst they shop/work etc. and in the japanese language, people dont say "HOT" or "SEXY" they say "CUTE" when referring to a girl when she looks hot/beautiful. i think this has something to do with the way they can get away with looking like they are about to go to a nightclub in the middle of the day..haha

i dont think the standard of beauty is that different. japanese appreciate large almond eyes with thick long lashes, and like straight "tall" noses. this IS NOT because they want to look white, its because throughout history there has always been people in japan who have had these features and because they were RARE it because considered beautiful. JUST HOW IN ETHIOPIA straight hair/silky hair is considered beautiful. it has nothing to do with wanting to be white. In fact the beauty IDEAL at the moment for 60% of japanese girls is BEYONCE. they try and makethemselves look like a half black woman. lol
and many succeed and look amazingly beautiful!

are you serious? how can the term "japopian" be offensive?

it's an obvious wordplay with no malicious intent and at worst just amusing. there are many things that are offending. like how the country still can't provide the basic necessity for the people, things like electricity, clean water e.t.c. we can start getting offended at a later time.

anyways, that girl is cute and has no trace of any Ethiopian blood. Ethiopians when mixed with others show no trace of their Ethiopian side. I have a friend who's half Korean and Half Ethiopian but there is no way to tell he's even mixed. he looks 100% Korean.

Very true statements... If you see a woman in the US and she is dressed like she is about to go to a nightclub, in the day time, she is labeled as a try hard sleaze. Even showing feet in high heels is getting frowns now a days. In Addis wearing these in day time could get the girl physically attacked. So much for western individuality. Japan actually surprised me in how personal space is respected to the extreme there. Its even impolite to have eye contact with someone you don't know.

Most of the salary women I saw in Tokyo are ok looking. Clean, fashionable and usually tired looking and serious. I will give these ladies 5-7. However once in a blue moon there comes rare, stunning tall and graceful bird, turning heads of all the Gaijin around her. One thing about Japanese women, I find them very articulate and friendly. If you can break the ice and find one that can communicate in English, usually she is responsive, knowledgeable and smart. I did not have the luck of dating any of them but I like their attitude.

In Addis, where I was last Sep, every second you see beauty the can make your heart leap out of its cage. Conversely to the Japanese girls though in Addis the girls are soft spoken but a bit backward as well. It was hard for me to engage them in conversation, ending up feeling like an older brother or something. Not cool.

Addis Ababa Exhibition Center
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Completion: 2011
Area: 750,000 sf

The design for the Addis Ababa Exhibition Centre Site creates a fully integrated and pedestrian centered mixed-use development of over 70,000 square meters built on nearly 4.5 acres in north east Africa. Providing dynamic retail, food and beverage amenities, office space, cultural and entertainment facilities, and a business hotel, the design of this development incorporates the existing adjacent Addis Ababa Museum, providing an iconic destination retail, entertainment and cultural environment. Serving both local inhabitants and visitors alike, the design solution seeks to create a lively and informal ground level experience tied to the natural landscape coupled with a more formal and structured experience that rises from the lower level as a series of well sculpted towers.

I notice how Ethiopian features really aren't that strong because when a person of Western/Central African descent mixes with somebody of a different race then you can obviously see the mixture and their features are very evident on the mixed race person but with a half Ethiopian/half another race you may encounter some difficulty.

Sooner or later the City administration will have to deal with solid and liquid waste management and proper flood drainage matters. I think its better done now than later. You don't keep building with septic tanks with no long term waste management plan.
Addisaba's sewage system is second to none existent, with most of the population relying on septic tanks and just bare dug holes, which are relieved using dump trucks. These trucks are few, usually in need of lengthy repair. The system is corrupt that favors those who bribe for better scheduling rights. Most of the poor use dug holes which when full are simply abandoned without any consideration of proper elimination of possible hazards.

The few sewer lines are not buried properly and so are exposed to human and natural damage. In some case heavy loaded trucks will crack the pipes resulting in sewage spilling on the surface. You can see in some parts of the city that the 9 to 5 crowd coming to and fro just covers their noses, some simply run as fast as they can until they are safely away. This can happen for weeks or even Months before the authorities respond.
There are no proper waste processing plants for the waste with the sewage simply dumped into the surrounding rivers, exposing poor families unfortunate enough to live in the river banks to disease.

In most cases people use storm drains as dumping places for all kinds of solid waste and kitchen garbage, including remains of animals which are slaughtered at the home. This is exasperated by the fact that many neighborhoods have drainage as a simple tunnel dug on the surface. Usually these are covered with slit, clothing, garbage, etc.. In the winter, the usual heavy rains turn the city into a shallow pool. When the the water dries off it leaves a layer of mud washed off by the floods from the surrounding mountains. When the mud dries it turns into dust.
In some part of town, next to the ring road there is a very large garbage dumping ground, not sure who maintains it. One afternoon after a very heavy downpour, the floods washed off a good chunk of this pile of slithering garbage onto the ring road. You could see miles of garbage laying. covering the road. You would not want to drive your car on that but have no option. The stench was to die for. It was a messy affair.
Some neighborhoods joined their efforts and buried these drains, but the authorities and some individuals kept digging and breaking the pipes to lay electric, telephone and other things and then leave the damage with no repair. Poor planning, poor regulation and poor enforcement.

Most of the toilets, in the older part of town, such as Piassa and Merkato are flooded or full, with people dropping excrement everywhere. It seems Addisabans have accepted this as their fate, no one seems to mind it.

With overworked and mostly unimaginative work force I don't think the city is capable of making any changes. We need someone like Eleni G/Medhin from the diaspora, trained in these matters to make a stand and make change.

What is the point of the large half moon covered with Asphalt, next to the stands. I saw kids playing futbol on it. Why not turn it into an open but well regulated play grown with a nicely maintained grass. Make it a playground for youngsters, mostly futbol lovers. They city is starved of playgrounds as it is.

i think meskel square should be completely redeveloped. it should be the site of the main terminus of ethiopias new railway. theres enough space to build a station there and make it the centre of youth culture in addis, with lots of tv screens, advertising, shopping, restaurants, bars and clubs.

I like what Japopian said. I hope they will redevelop the land south of Meskel Sq, up on the hill. It would be perfect for a convention center or some other public venue.

Anything other than this waste land on the picture. In any case, convention center is a good option. The city needs a location for large rallies. Every capital city has it. Unless you tell me they can use Jan Meda, which is flat and out of the way, I can't think of anything else. My point was instead of wasting a land as big as the large halfmoon, why not just cover it with grass and let kids play on it for now. You can think of "the Mall" as an example in Washington DC/US. It will be used as an assembly ground when needed.
Addis could become like any big city, crammed with high rises. That is why I could not stand Tokyo, its a jungle of concrete and glass towers. I was emotionally suffocated there. Cities need large openings of flat lawns, at least Tokyo has its beaches.

I think a main terminal is a good Idea. Specially since its found in the lower part of town. I envision something like the Grand Central Station in New York, Frankfurt central Station or something like Shinjuku. Probably not as big but...Anyway what they need is people who can think outside the box, ask questions and propose possibilities. If you can envision it, that will be a start.

meskel square should look like this - with the signs in amharic of course. to the left is the station (at the moment where the concrete semi circle and steps are). the tv screen on the right is where i believe the old ethiopian airlines building is now/

try imagining it - announcements and adverts blaring out in amharic and english, lights, tvs displaying ethiopian adverts, music videos playing on tvs, music playing from lamposts on the streets -

Thanks for the pictures guys, they're awesome.

Japopian, I definitely agree with you. The Meskel Square area should be the Times Square of Addis. It's central location and wide amount of space is ideal. There's potential for lots of foot traffic and would be a great place to go hang out.

I have to tell you I have issues with Tokyo and generally the look is as you put it here. Tokyo would have been so much better with some large open spaces in b/n. I think space is of a major issue there, just as I saw in Kingston/Jamaica, London/England and Tokyo, the cities of smaller Island nations are always crammed. Tokyo is really a humongous city with the worlds best structures and excellent designs but the city feels crammed. What I missed in Tokyo was just flat open lawns. San Francisco is a high rise city like Tokyo but SF is very tiny and surrounded with water in all directions, with the bay on the north and east, the ocean on the west, you always get a sense of break in the action. Besides SF is not flat so you can go the hilly sides and enjoy nice views. The driving and walking in SF is always interesting.
Addisabans should take that into consideration. The way its done now, with everyone coming to the city as of now, this city could be crammed beyond belief with buildings and what not.
